I see RH0 as a very useful feature for troubleshooting in a network, but
I really can't see why a non-routing system should every need or want
it. It looks to me like it should be non-existent when routing is not
enabled and off by default when it is enabled.

That said, in these days of MPLS and wide-area VLANs, the usefulness of
this option is far less than it was in the earlier days of the net and I
can't remember the last time I used the loose-source route capability of
IPv4. I have never used it in IPv6.

If it does live on (in any form), it is important that IPFW2 be able to
filter it properly (ala Bjoren's patches) so it can be limited to
desired connections, typically internal connections.

  Modified files:
sys/dev/acpica acpi.c
  Log:
Use a tighter check to see if a resource allocation request is for a
specific request and thus should first try to be allocated from the
sys_resource pool. This avoids using the sys_resource pool for wildcard
requests that have bounded ranges coming from cbb(4) and Host-PCI pcib(4)
  drivers.

I think I'll test this to see if it helps my via 8235 ata survive boot.

I wonder if in fact the algorithm shouldn't be changed to always try to alloc
the resource from the parent first, and only fall back to the sys_resource
rmans if that fails? In theory any resource requests that should be done via
sys_resource will fail the request in the parent, yes?

Could you be a bit more verbose what changed here and why it
was done?

I agree. I would really like to know what the modification accomplishes.

Alas, we don't live in an ideal world. If we did, our commit
messages would always follow the well-known guideline:

0. Tell the essence of the change.
1. Give the reason for the change.
2. Explain the change unless it's trivial.

In the ideal world there are no NDAs :-)
As planned I forced a commit with a better comment once I was able to.
Thanks for your patients,

Yay, my laptop now boots with this change. Thanks!

BTW, I've been thinking about sysres issues in general. One is that
sometimes ACPI tables define regions that are actually split with nexus.
Would it make sense to change rman to have a split model where if a
request can be partially satisfied by this pool and a parent pool, we
can split the request while returning a struct resource *? struct
resource would probably have to be changed to allow a linked list of
internal storage with pointers to parent pools.

What do you think?

I wonder if in fact the algorithm shouldn't be changed to always try to alloc
the resource from the parent first, and only fall back to the sys_resource
rmans if that fails? In theory any resource requests that should be done via
sys_resource will fail the request in the parent, yes?

Yes, that should be ok but why not do local first and then push up tree
if it fails? Semantically, a child of your bus requested the resource
so most of the time you should be able to handle it.

I guess we could make it optional. a patch is welcome until I get

I apologize, due to some ages old filter (leftover from the time when I
was on portmgr) the messages went into the wrong folder, which I don't
check. Now I see them.

Regarding the commits in question: are there any technical problems with
my changes? If my memory serves in the past there were general agreement
that maintainer's approval is good, but is not strictly required for the
cases when the change is obvious. Unfortunately I don't have much spare
time in my hands nowadays so that need to send e-mail for each of those
small fixes could be a showstopper for me and result in them staying in
my private tree. That being said, I don't ask to make an exception for
me based on that and if you say that the policy now is that maintainer
approval is strictly required I will adhere.

Another generic note from my experience with other open source projects,
is that usually ones with not-so-strict approval rules tend to make much
faster progress.

Is it expected to fix some Turion laptops out there, that were

As far as I know that has never been the policy. If you are worried
that you will not have time later to follow up, you can just send a PR
and let the system work as designed: this method seems to work well
enough for all our non-committers out there ;-)

  Log:
The Enhanced TightVNC Viewer package started as a project to add some patches
to the long neglected Unix TightVNC Viewer. However, now the front-end GUI and
wrapper scripts features dwarf the Unix TightVNC Viewer patches (see the lists
  below).

It adds a GUI for Windows, Mac OS X, and Unix that automatically starts up
STUNNEL SSL tunnel for SSL or SSH connections to x11vnc, and then launches the
TightVNC Viewer to use the tunnel. It also enables SSL encrypted VNC
connections to any other VNC Server running an SSL tunnel, such as STUNNEL, at
their end. It can be used to perform SSH tunnelled connections to any VNC
Server as well. The tool has many additional features (see below for a list).

The short name for this project is "ssvnc" for SSL/SSH VNC Viewer.

Was the change based on a document under NDA? Then this case raises
an interesting question: to what extent an open source developer
is allowed to explain his code that was based on a document under
NDA? Of course, it should depend on the NDA, but I suspect that a
typical NDA requires a lawyer to interpret it unambiguously (I've
never signed one by myself), and an overcautious lawyer would say
that the open source code itself violates the NDA because anybody
can RTFS. :-)

In account management, verify whether the account has been locked
with `pw lock', so that it's impossible to log into a locked account
using an alternative authentication mechanism, such as an ssh key.
This change affects only accounts locked with pw(8), i.e., having a

use a different pattern to disable password authentication only.

I agree. I would really like to know what the modification accomplishes.

Alas, we don't live in an ideal world. If we did, our commit

is allowed to explain his code that was based on a document under
NDA? Of course, it should depend on the NDA, but I suspect that a
typical NDA requires a lawyer to interpret it unambiguously (I've
never signed one by myself), and an overcautious lawyer would say
that the open source code itself violates the NDA because anybody
can RTFS. :-)

Wow, that was painful to read. NDAs that specifically allow source
code licensing and distribution are quite common. They even get written
and reviewed by lawyers! =-)
