The Coalition was formed in June 2017 to discuss and address the issues of diversity and inclusion within our industry. In principle and in practice, collectively, these organizations value and seek diversity and inclusive practices within the scholarly communications ecosystem. A number of surveys in recent years have shed light on the lack of diversity in scholarly communications as whole. Whether it is gender equality or the noticeable lack of ethnic diversity among our workforce, there is an awareness that, as an industry, we are not a model of inclusivity. Publishing is truly a global enterprise, yet in many respects, our workforce is very homogeneous and that is reflected in our own collective member demographics. Representatives from these organizations met in Boston, MA, at the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) Annual Meeting in June 2017, to discuss challenges and current initiatives in progress to address the lack of diversity and inclusion within the industry. We agreed to continue discussions and collaborate on possible projects starting with a [ Joint Statement of Principles ]( https://librarypublishing.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=299460903c5acd28e01011bfe&id=84fed7feb8&e=a709f0a51a ). “Working collectively, we can combine resources and have a greater impact, said Melanie Dolechek, SSP Executive Director. “Due to the overlap in our memberships, it makes sense to collaborate on this initiative.” The Coalition invites other organizations and companies to adopt the Joint Statement of Principles to show their support for and commitment to improving diversity and inclusion in scholarly communications. Organizations of any type can register their adoption of the Principles on the [ Coalition’s website ]( https://librarypublishing.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=299460903c5acd28e01011bfe&id=7a38aa2a9a&e=a709f0a51a ). The Coalition is currently evaluating proposals for international market research into diversity and inclusion in scholarly publishing, via a survey that will be repeated every three years for up to 10 years. The study will serve as a benchmark or a baseline measure for progress. The survey will included all types of publishers—for-profit, not-profit, government, library, university, etc.—as well as publishing services suppliers. C4DIS

[CODE4LIB] Bridging the Gap: NASIG & UKSG Working Towards Open Access Conference Proceedings
February 4, 2019 Bridging the Gap: NASIG & UKSG Working Towards Open Access Conference Proceedings Open Access publication is a democratizing force advocated by many in the library and information community. NASIG’s vision outlines our stance to improve the distribution of information resources in all formats. We are taking a step forward by pursuing a partnership with the UKSG to publish the 2021 NASIG Conference Proceedings in the Open Access journal, Insights.[ https://insights.uksg.org/ ]( https://insights.uksg.org/ ) Andrew Barker, Chair of UKSG said: “NASIG is a very important collaborative partner for UKSG, and we have a long tradition of working together. We are delighted by NASIG’s decision to pursue this partnership in offering its Conference Proceedings through the UKSG open access journal, Insights. This will give UKSG and NASIG the opportunity of broadening the reach of both UKSG Insights and NASIG’s Conference Proceedings through an Open Access model that will ensure that all of us within the knowledge community can benefit from the great work that’s taking place in our international community”. Former NASIG Presidents serving on the Insights Editorial Board share their support: “NASIG conferences provide a huge amount of practical and insightful information every year, and I’m very excited to see the organization moving in the direction of making this information freely available. This will be a great benefit to the world of scholarly communication.” -Rick Anderson, NASIG President 2009/2010 "NASIG has always been one of the premier organizations providing mentorship and pathways to LIS students and early career librarians. The decision to move the NASIG Proceedings to an open scholarship environment benefits everyone involved in the LIS community and we should support this initiative wholeheartedly." -Jill Emery, NASIG President 2008/2009 Today, NASIG makes this commitment, but we need your support to meet fundraising goals. In the coming months NASIG will be releasing a series of initiatives aimed at generating $25,000 a year to support Open Access. Join us at the NASIG conference in Pittsburgh, PA to learn more! Because text mining is a relatively new method for research, few librarians have had an introduction to and/or training needed to accomplish these tasks. In this pre-conference workshop I will introduce participants to the basics of text-mining including defining terms, identifying library resources that may serve as data sources for text mining, and introducing the tools and processes used for text mining, for instance the Hathi Trust’s Text Analysis Algorithms and Python scripting. Library Leadership Your Way 6/4/2019, 1-5 pm $100 30 spaces Dr. Jason Martin, Middle Tennessee State University This pre-conference is intended to be a practical guide for anyone interested in library leadership. Attendees will learn about leadership, become better leaders, and develop their own leadership practices. This pre-conference will allow attendees to engage with the subject of leadership in a meaningful way, by thinking and reflecting on various ideas of leadership and how they might use those ideas in their leadership lives. The point of this pre-conference is not to explain how to lead, but for attendees to discover why they want to lead, how they can best lead, and what their unique leadership practice looks like. Attendees will be asked to think about what leadership means to them, learn overall principles of how to effectively lead themselves and others, be exposed to major leadership theories and philosophies, and finally to revisit their initial ideas about leadership. By the end of the pre-conference, attendees will have developed their own definition of and approach to leadership, understand the basics of major leadership theories and philosophies, and have a leadership practice and plan in place they can use in their everyday leadership lives. This pre-conference is intended for library leaders at all levels – from department head to dean/director, for librarians interested in becoming library leaders, and for informal library leaders as well. DAY 2 June 5, 2019 Contract Construction: Creating an Effective Licensing Toolkit in an Academic Library Setting 6/5/2019, 8 am-12 pm $100 30 spaces Stephanie Hess, Binghamton University Megan Kilb, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill This session will offer a blueprint for crafting a clear picture of licensing priorities for your library and home institution and for developing an orderly negotiation process to ensure each agreement is properly reviewed and handled. Beginning with a brief overview of standard licensing terms for e-resources, we will discuss how to draw up your own checklists and draft legal provisions customized to successfully fulfill the information needs of your library’s users, while adhering to your institution’s local legal requirements. We will also identify practical methods for reviewing contracts to identify the issues in clauses that are most often challenging or problematic. BIBFRAME Basics: A Crash Course 6/5/2019, 8 am-12 pm $100 30 spaces Dennis Christman, Duke University Interested in learning about BIBFRAME and how it works? This workshop will go over the basics of what BIBFRAME is, how it was developed, and ongoing BIBFRAME initiatives; then cover the underlying technologies in just enough detail to really understand how BIBFRAME works differently from what we do today, including graph data structures, ontologies, and RDF. Finally, we’ll look at the Library of Congress developed BIBFRAME editor and get some hands-on practice creating and editing a variety of resources. Attendees should plan on bringing a laptop to get the most of their experience. [CODE4LIB] Announcing the 2020 & 2021 NASIG Conference Locations
The NASIG Site Selection Committee is very excited and pleased to announce the conference locations and dates for 2020 and 2021! The committee determined early on that we wanted to look to the Midwest and Western regions for the next two conferences, and we also wanted to keep our option open in doing so. RFPs were sent out to 26 cities with reasonable airport access that were also not in states on the California travel ban list. The committee reviewed the responses from all locations, factored in as many of the site selection criteria as possible, and narrowed down the selection to one city for each region. After a site visit to both locations, it was clear to the committee that these would be excellent choices for NASIG. Both of the selected hotels were in the heart of their respective cities, with plenty of dining and entertainment options nearby. Both hotels offered competitive room rates in the range NASIG attendees have come to expect. Both hotels had more than adequate meeting space and enough sleeping rooms for our conference size, with some room for anticipated growth. So, where are they? When are they? The 2020 conference will be held at[ The Davenport Grand ]( https://www.davenporthotelcollection.com/our-hotels/the-davenport-grand/ ) in Spokane, Washington, on June 8-12, and the 2021 conference will be held at[ The Madison Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club ]( https://www.concoursehotel.com/ ) in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 17-21. If you are interested in serving on the conference planning committees for either location, please indicate that on the[ volunteer form ]( http://www.nasig.org/site_page.cfm?pk_association_webpage_menu=708&pk_association_webpage=1268 ). Here’s what Spokane has to say about itself: Making the most of your time in greater Spokane is hassle-free and it’s easy to enjoy everything our great city has waiting to share with you. Without traffic to slow you down it’s simple to connect to our regional experiences. From the urban core to our family-owned farms, to banks of lakes and rivers, and up into the mountains there is so much to explore. And the best part is Spokane is so convenient that you don’t have to choose. Culinary adventures await you after your meeting! Within a few minutes walk of The Davenport Grand there are dozens of bold and daring restaurants with inspired chefs waiting to welcome you with a relaxing meal. Sip local wine or cheers a pint of Spokane Style craft beer while you discuss the latest innovations and best practices in your field with co-workers and new colleagues. When you meet in Spokane you don’t have to search to find the post-conference snack you’ve been craving since lunch, and you don’t have to wade through traffic to get there, it’s there right outside the doors. Searching for something to bring home with you? After your conference, you have time to explore local shops and boutiques and coveted national retailers. No grabbing something at the airport because you didn’t have time to find the shopping district. The shops are minutes from the conference. They’re so close you could even get some retail therapy in during the session lunch break. It’s all located in Spokane’s walkable downtown core – which the convention center district is a part of. Sometimes you just need to unwind with a brisk post-conference walk, or get your blood pumping with a quick run. Within minutes of your last session of the day you can change into your gear and hit the trail while you take in breath taking views of the majestic Spokane River gorge. Scenic views and a 100-acre park are adjacent to the convention center district. Rent a stand-up paddle board and explore the river, or plan an after-session group rafting trip with your colleagues, the river is not only right outside your door, but you can take those adventures without leaving downtown Spokane. When you meet in Spokane you get your time back. You can take that run, explore the shops and grab a great meal prepared by an award-winning chef all in one evening. When you meet in Spokane there’s a whole new session waiting for you when the conference lights dim, only in this session you explore the gracious city that’s welcomed you in. And Madison’s not too shy about its features, either: One of Madison’s many claims to fame is that it plays host to the nation’s largest producers-only farmers’ market. Farm-to-table fare continues to be a top trend nationwide, and you’ll often see our local chefs shopping the market for seasonal and sustainable offerings that are prepared and served that same day at our restaurants, from fine dining destinations to corner food carts. Greater Madison is microbrew country, and there are ample opportunities to sample it all, from award-winning ales to savory seasonals. But our craft culture doesn’t stop with beers. You may not think of ours as a grape-growing region, but we are home to two award-wi

See you in Pittsburgh! Text Mining 101 6/4/2019, 8 am - 5 pm $200 Dr. Sarah Sutton Emporia State University School of Library and Information Science Supporting text mining research requires an understanding of the process of text mining in order for librarians to assist researchers to use library resources as sources text mining data, to license electronic resources in way that makes provisions for such uses, and to manage and/or provide access to text mining tools among other activities. Library Leadership Your Way 6/4/2019, 1-5 pm $100 Dr. Jason Martin Middle Tennessee State University This pre-conference is intended to be a practical guide for anyone interested in library leadership. This pre-conference is intended for library leaders at all levels - from department head to dean/director, for librarians interested in becoming library leaders, and for informal library leaders as well. Contract Construction: Creating an Effective Licensing Toolkit in an Academic Library Setting 6/5/2019, 8 am-12 pm $100 Stephanie Hess Binghamton University Megan Kilb University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill This session will offer a blueprint for crafting a clear picture of licensing priorities for your library and home institution and for developing an orderly negotiation process to ensure each agreement is properly reviewed and handled. BIBFRAME Basics: A Crash Course 6/5/2019, 8 am-12 pm $100 Dennis Christman Duke University Interested in learning about BIBFRAME and how it works? This workshop will go over the basics of what BIBFRAME is, how it was developed, and ongoing BIBFRAME initiatives; then cover the underlying technologies in just enough detail to really understand how BIBFRAME works differently from what we do today, including graph data structures, ontologies, and RDF. Finally, we’ll look at the Library of Congress developed BIBFRAME editor and get some hands-on practice creating and editing a variety of resources. Attendees should plan on bringing a laptop to get the most of their experience. The Future of Scholarly Communications 6/5/2019, 1-5 pm $100 Lisa Hinchliffe University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Structured as an interactive workshop, this pre-conference will explore possible futures of scholarly communications and publishing and implications for access, collections, and preservation. Drawing on trends analysis and potential scenarios that have been developed by publishers

[CODE4LIB] NASIG Conference Update – COVID-19 Statement
Dear NASIG Community, The NASIG Board met on Tuesday to discuss plans for the annual conference in light of the worsening coronavirus crisis. Any major changes to the event will be complex and potentially costly, so we need to practice due diligence as we figure out how best to handle the situation. Luckily, the conference is still more than two months away, which gives us time to evaluate our options in a calm and thoughtful manner. I regret that we can’t provide a more definite decision at this time, but please know that we are doing all we can to address the situation in a way that will be the most beneficial to our membership. One thing that the Board has unanimously agreed on is our desire not to see the work that’s already gone into this year’s conference wasted. So regardless of what happens with the face-to-face meeting, we will plan to offer an online option. The exact details of the online meeting are still being determined, but we will share more information as soon as it’s known. Thank you for your membership and understanding during these challenging times. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the board at [ i...@nasig.org ]( mailto:i...@nasig.org ). [CODE4LIB] NASIG 35th Annual Conference Cancelled
Dear NASIG Community, The NASIG Executive Board has made the difficult decision to cancel the 35th Annual NASIG Conference due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The possible risks to the health and safety of our members, as well as the current environment of travel restrictions, have made it impossible to proceed with the meeting as scheduled. NASIG will plan to offer an online conference this summer. The board is still exploring the best format for this event, and we will be in contact with our speakers, sponsors, and the broader membership in the coming weeks with more information. For those who have already registered for the conference, you will hear from us soon regarding refunds. We will plan to honor all of this year’s NASIG award winners at the 36th Annual Conference to be held May 17-20, 2021 in Madison, WI. We’re also pleased to announce that we will have a chance to visit the Davenport Grand Hotel in Spokane, WA, for our 2024 conference. Rescheduling with the Davenport has allowed us to cancel this year’s conference without financial penalty, and we greatly appreciate their flexibility. Thank you for your membership and understanding during these challenging times. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the board at [ i...@nasig.org ]( mailto:i...@nasig.org ). [CODE4LIB] Free webinar: Streamlining Content Platform Migrations
Webinar: Streamlining Content Platform Migrations: What do librarians need to know and what you can do to help. Registration Info: This webinar is free. Register at https://nasig.org/event-4090902 Date: January 21, 2021 Time: 1 PM EST Description: Despite the tedious preparation by publishers, vendors, and librarians, content platform migrations are rarely seamless. Due to the complexities involved, a problem-free migration is the exception rather than the norm. The NISO Content Platform Migration Working Group was formed to address these challenges and aims to establish recommended practices and checklists to standardize and improve platform migration processes for all stakeholders involved with online content platforms. In this webinar, a librarian and a publisher will share their detailed, yet unique experiences on what happens during content platform migrations. These perspectives will review the work and planning required to make these events run as smoothly as possible, and the challenges they face when they don’t. Our publisher-side speaker will describe issues they must consider when their content migrates, such as providing continuous access, persistent linking, communicating with stakeholders, and working with vendors. Our librarian speaker will describe their experience and steps they take during migrations, such as receiving notifications about migrations, identifying affected e-resources, updating local systems to ensure continuous access, and communicating with their front-line staff and patrons. The Working Group Co-Chairs will close by describing the group’s efforts to-date, expected outcomes and call to action for the audience. This is a NISO CPM Working Group, NASIG Standards Committee, and NASIG Continuing Education Committee co-sponsored event. Presenters: Matthew Ragucci, Associate Product Marketing Director at Wiley, NASIG Standards Committee Chair Athena Hoeppner, Discovery Services Librarian at University of Central Florida, NISO Content Platform Migration Working Group Co-Chair Kim Steinle, Library Relations and Sales Manager at Duke University Press, NISO Content Platform Migration Working Group Co-Chair

One core element of that metadata is the use of controlled vocabularies and authority control. These methods can also be applied to various elements of the research process. Recently, a variety of projects have gained traction within the research community to identify elements of the process that will support discovery, linking and interaction with research outputs. These systems and approaches include ORCID, DataCite, FundRef, CREDIT and others. This webinar will focus on the role that libraries and publishers can play in fostering these systems in their work. In addition to updates on a few of these initiatives, this webinar will also highlight the implementation of these systems in the research lifecycle. Contributing their expertise and perspectives, this webinar features the following noted professionals: Attribution from a Research Library Perspective Micah Altman, Head/Scientist, MIT Libraries Program on Information Science Data, Metadata, and Data Citation: Insights from PLOS Emma Ganley, PhD., Chief Editor, PLOS Biology How Libraries can Support the Identification and Discovery of Scholarly Output. Ekatarina (Eka) Grguric, Fellow, North Carolina State University Libraries; Madison Sullivan, Fellow, North Carolina State University Libraries; William Cross, Director, Copyright and Digital Scholarship Center, North Carolina State University Libraries For more details on this event, including registration information, please visit [ the NISO event page ]( http://www.niso.org/news/events/2016/webinars/aug10_webinar/ ). [CODE4LIB] NASIG Statement of Inclusion
January 27, 2017 To: NASIG members and the associated professional community In the wake of the recent contentious U.S. Presidential election, many people have expressed fear that our nation is ripe for an environment in which diverse views and characteristics are no longer valued. While our focus as a membership organization is “to advance and transform the management of information resources,” we cannot forget that this work is done by individual people who are experiencing a multitude of emotions right now, and therefore we must also do what we can to ensure that NASIG remains a space where a diversity of perspectives is welcomed, but divisive and abusive behaviors are not. For more than 30 years, NASIG has been an organization dedicated to creating a community among a diverse group of individuals in the information chain. We have welcomed individuals from all scholarly communication perspectives, striving for a shared understanding of our challenges and goals. Our membership represents many walks of life in terms of sexual orientation, race, religion, etc., and we honor and value these varied characteristics in our constituents. In recent years, injustices and imbalances in our world have been brought to light in more ways than were available to us before. We recognize that these are not new, but as we have become more aware of the impact on our lives and the lives of those around us, we are also seeing the widening of a divide between individuals. To that end, we have evolved and expanded our Code of Conduct to clarify the expectations we have for the behavior of NASIG members not only at our annual conference, but in other NASIG venues, both physical and virtual. NASIG does not tolerate discrimination or harassment in any form. If any member or conference attendee feels they are experiencing such in a NASIG-sponsored venue, please contact a member of the Board immediately so that we can take appropriate action. The Program Planning Committee is pleased to announce the Vision Speakers for the 32nd Annual NASIG Conference. Dr. Michel Dumontier is an expert in the development and use of semantic technologies and machine learning for knowledge discovery. Since January 2017, he is a University Professor of Data Science at Maastricht University, where he leads a new Institute for Data Science that acts as a focal point for data science research and teaching across the University, enhances the management and analysis of public and private data, and pursues the development of effective approaches for knowledge exploration, analysis, and discovery across all domains. Previously he was an Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Stanford University, and an Associate Professor of Bioinformatics at Carleton University. Dr. Dumontier's research aims to develop methods to integrate, mine, and make sense of large, complex, and heterogeneous data. His current research interests include (1) using multi-scale biomedical data for drug repositioning and combination therapy, and (2) developing predictive and crowdsourcing methods to improve the quality of experimental metadata. Dr. Dumontier is an Advisory Committee Representative for the World Wide Web Consortium, a co-Chair for the W3C Semantic Web for Health Care and the Life Sciences Interest Group, a scientific advisor for the EBI-EMBL Chemistry Services Division, and the Scientific Director for Bio2RDF, an open source project to build a network of Linked Data for the Life Sciences. April Hathcock is the Scholarly Communications Librarian at NYU where she educates the campus community on issues of ownership, access, and rights in the research lifecycle. Before entering librarianship, she practiced intellectual property and antitrust law for a global private firm. Her research interests include diversity and inclusion in librarianship, cultural creation and exchange, and the ways in which social and legal infrastructures benefit the works of certain groups over others. She is the author of the article “White Librarianship in Blackface: Diversity Initiatives in LIS” and the blog At the Intersection, which examines issues at the intersection of feminism, libraries, social justice, and the law. Carol Tilley is an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences at University of Illinois. She studies the intersection of young people, comics, and libraries, particularly in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. Her research on anti-comics advocate Fredric Wertham was featured in the New York Times and other media outlets. An in-demand speaker on the history of comics readership and libraries, Tilley was a 2016 Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards judge and currently serves as Vice-President / President-Elect of the Comics Studies Society. [CODE4LIB] FW: Passing of John Riddick
On behalf of the NASIG organization, the Executive Board wishes to express our great sorrow for the loss of John Riddick. Without John’s leadership, vision and driving force, NASIG would not be entering its 32nd year. As our founder, John is held in high regard and is owed a great debt of gratitude. As NASIG’s primary marketing strategist in 1984/85, John tirelessly promoted the concept of a North American group for all participants in the serials information chain. John believed in what he called the “technique of personal marketing” – hundreds of hand-typed letters traveled throughout North America and designated ambassadors spread the word through visits and phone calls. His plan was a great success and the first conference had over 250 attendees and soon after the organization was off and running. Self-effacing, never taking credit himself, John always talked about the collaborative efforts of all those involved. In his speech at the 10th conference (1996), John said, “And thus there was no heroic figure … NASIG was conceived and brought forth through the efforts and dedication of many individuals.” John capably motivated the right people and ensured that all sectors of the information chain were represented – libraries, vendors, publishers, and other service entities. Most of all, he thrived in being a mentor and in seeing NASIG become a leading serials organization. Once he saw that others were able to take over, John stepped back and did not seek recognition. He had other projects to focus on – his research in British India. In honor of John’s valuable contribution, the Executive Board in 2010 named the student scholarships the “John Riddick Student Grant Award”. The award entitles library school students to attend the NASIG conference with transportation and registration covered by NASIG. John originated the idea and the first scholarships were given in 1988. To continue to celebrate John’s life, the NASIG Executive Board made a donation to CMU Library. We are so fortunate that John envisioned and then ensured that NASIG continues into the future. Overwhelmed by ontologies? Or feeling turmoil about Turtle? Then this workshop is for you. Learn the practical foundations of Linked Data with a particular focus on serials in this half-day workshop. The presenters will go beyond just talking about RDF triples and actually break down linked data technology and how its application can be utilized for serials. Topics to be covered: *Linked Data 101 *Ontology Basics *Turtle Tutorials *BIBGRAME 2.0 Introduction and The CONSER Mapping Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop. The presenters will be demonstrating linked data tools such as Protege, Vitro, and the LC BIBFRAME Editor (hopefully ready for BF 2.0). Attendees will have the opportunity to try the software along with the demonstration. Beyond the Editor: Advanced Tools and Techniques for Working With Metadata By Terry Reese, Ohio State University, and Shana McDanold, Georgetown University Thursday, June 8th - 8 am to noon http://sched.co/9gHw Are you ready to expand your MARC editing toolbox? This presentation will look at a variety of advanced MARC editing tools, libraries, and techniques to give you more options when wrangling your institution’s MARC data. Over the preconference, we will look at advance MarcEdit functions, like working with Regular expressions, automatic record harvesting and XML data conversions, as well as examine the new toolkit, MARCNext, designed to let catalogers explore adding linked data concepts within your MARC data. We’ll look at OpenRefine, and how uses can make use of OpenRefine and MarcEdit to perform powerful editing tasks that use to be hard to imagine without writing code. And speaking of coding – yes, there will be code. From MarcEdit’s Script Maker to tools you can find on Github, the speakers will endeavor to provide attendees with the information that they will need to address even the most difficult MARC editing project. This program is a reprise of last year’s successful and popular workshop. [CODE4LIB] Scholarly Communication Core Competencies Task Force Invites Feedback at NASIG Conference
The Scholarly Communication Librarian Core Competencies Task Force has completed a board-reviewed draft of core competencies. The Task Force intends to present its findings at the Members Forum (Saturday, June 10, 4:30-5:30) during the upcoming annual conference. All NASIG Conference attendees are welcome to offer comments, criticism, or other feedback. We hope you can make it, as we expect a lively discussion with a lot of participation. If you are unable to join us at the conference, though, or would otherwise prefer to submit feedback electronically, you may submit to core-c...@nasig.org until June 8th, 2017. The Core Competencies (available at http://www.nasig.org/site_page.cfm?pk_association_webpage_menu=310&pk_association_webpage=9435 ) reflect the facts that scholarly communication positions are broad, varied, and subject to the specific existing staffing, organizational goals, and institutional culture in which the position is embedded. Through extensive investigation into recent job advertisements, position descriptions, and continuing education opportunities, the task force identified four themes common to all scholarly communication librarians and five areas of potential emphasis within this broad and often amorphous field. We thank you for your input. [CODE4LIB] November NASIG Webinar: Tracking Down the Problem: The Development of a Web-Scale Discovery Troubleshooting Workflow
Title: Tracking Down the Problem: The Development of a Web-Scale Discovery Troubleshooting Workflow Date: November 16, 2017 Time: 1pm Eastern Time Description: When the University of North Texas Libraries first implemented Summon as their web-scale discovery service, the staff encountered many anecdotal reports of problems with the service, but often were unable to replicate the issues themselves due to lack of concrete details. With the complexity involved with diagnosing problems, most patrons were unable to provide the level of detail needed to determine what the root cause of an issue might be. Realizing that they needed a more effective way to gather information about these phantom problems, in 2013 they added an error reporting link to their results pages which harvested metadata about specific citations and links, enabling them to begin effectively troubleshooting the errors. Since that time, they have received over 7,000 error reports for review and have developed their workflows to resolve these issues as best they can with limited staff time. This presentation will walk through the basic troubleshooting workflows, provide a breakdown of the types of errors encountered, and share some analysis of the most frequently encountered errors and their causes. [CODE4LIB] NASIG Announces Conference Rates for 2018
NASIG is pleased to announce registration rates for our [ 33rd annual conference in Atlanta, GA from 8-11 June 2018 ]( http://www.nasig.org/site_page.cfm?pk_association_webpage_menu=700&pk_association_webpage=1228 ). As a non-profit entity, we work very hard to ensure attendees get as much value as possible out of our events, so we are particularly pleased that the regular conference registration rates for 2018 are unchanged from the previous two years. In addition, we’ve negotiated a very competitive room rate at the [ conference hotel (the Grand Hyatt Atlanta – Buckhead) ]( http://www.nasig.org/site_page.cfm?pk_association_webpage_menu=700&pk_association_webpage=1234 ) of $149 per night. The NASIG Board made these decisions based upon your feedback about concerns for rising conference costs that limit participation. We are also investigating options for offering access to online session recordings for a reasonable additional fee. Stay tuned for a separate announcement on that topic to come. Our annual conferences present significant cost savings in comparison to peer events while also continuing to provide the top notch conference programming and networking events that we’ve always been known for. (See our previously announced lineup of #nasig18 [ vision speakers ]( https://nasig.wordpress.com/2017/09/01/vision-speakers-for-the-2018-conference/ ) and [ preconferences ]( https://nasig.wordpress.com/2017/10/03/pre-conference-presenters-and-topics-announced-for-the-2018-nasig-annual-conference/ ).) [CODE4LIB] 2017-2021 NASIG Strategic Plan
A new [ NASIG Strategic Plan for 2017-2021 ]( https://s3.amazonaws.com/amo_hub_content/Association92/files/NASIG%20Strategic%20Plan2017-2021%20June2017.pdf ) is now available, having been approved by the NASIG Executive Board this past summer. The Board is grateful for the hard work of members of the NASIG Strategic Plan Implementation Task Force: Joyce Tenney, Chair Virginia Bacon Martin Carol Ann (Borchert) Davis Kittie Henderson Betsy Hughes Steve Kelley Angie Thorpe The new plan grew out of a few important developments. In 2015, the NASIG Board established the Financial Planning Task Force to take a long-term view of NASIG’s finances, set benchmarks and timelines, and to establish financial goals for the next five years. Their work and recommendations fed into the next step, when October Ivins (former NASIG President (1994/95)) worked with the Board for a full day of strategic planning in early 2016. Many great ideas came out of that session, and several of them have already been implemented. The Board appointed a Strategic Plan Implementation Task Force to draft the final strategic plan for the remaining items, and we are very pleased with the result. https://nasig.wordpress.com/2017/10/31/2017-2021-nasig-strategic-plan/

Enter our joint NASIG/UKSG competition to attend the premier conference for the scholarly information community on the other side of the Atlantic – the NASIG Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA, 8-11 June 2018 and the UKSG Annual Conference in Glasgow, 9-11 April 2018. NASIG and UKSG are offering two lucky members, one from NASIG and one from UKSG, the chance to attend each other's annual conference. The award is intended to cover travel and accommodation costs and each award recipient will also receive paid conference registration (which includes most meals). Named in honour of John Merriman, in recognition of his work in founding both UKSG and NASIG, it provides an invaluable opportunity for people to learn and share experiences. The UK award winner will be supported by the generous sponsorship of Taylor & Francis Group for the US trip and will in addition receive full financial support from UKSG to attend the UKSG conference. Last year’s UK winner said: “I was delighted to win the John Merriman Award that enabled me to attend NASIG 2017 in Indianapolis. The conference was very well organised with a good variety of sessions. I was able to network with many library colleagues in America and found this very beneficial. At the concurrent sessions I shared my knowledge and experience about approaches to open access promotion in my University with colleagues who are in the process of setting up their institutional repositories. In return I gained knowledge about recent cataloguing developments and was introduced to the concept of open educational resources, something we do not currently focus on at my institution. The social activities at the conference were excellent. I enjoyed my evening at the Indy Car Factory where I got the chance to ride in an Indy Car. I also attended a baseball match and enjoyed the atmosphere very much.” Eimear Evans, Institutional Repository Officer, McClay Library, Queen’s University Belfast WHO CAN APPLY The award is open to members of NASIG and UKSG with one recipient being chosen from each organisation.
