Stus-List c&C 24 rudder detail

2014-06-06 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
Ed, I am based in Burlington too, and I also have the details of water in
the rudder (on a 40), I drilled the 2 holes, one at the top and one in the
bottom in the fall(so that it could possibly drain better, it was still
weeping last weekend when I sealed the holes back up for the summer, I'll
probably redrill them in the fall. So plan that it will take time to get the
water out, I would recommend in your case you consider taking the rudder
home in the fall and leaving it in the furnace room for the winter with the
holes in it. Marine Tex is a wonder sealer for the summer, and fast

Stus-List Set up of shower in Cockpit

2014-07-21 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
I wanted to run a thought by the list to see if my thoughts to install a
small handheld shower in the back of the cockpit for rinse of and showering
at the area of the wheel are feasible. My positive reasons for this is extra
room and ease of draining and overall cleaning. I am considering connecting
to the input hot water line before it enters the water heater coming from
the engine. The boat is on fresh water , hence I would have unlimited volume
of water available, I assume the water would be pure and clean even though
it has gone through the engine cooling (heating) system, I also assume the
temperature of the water to only be in the 110 degree level at best, and
there is a recirculating pump (that normally recirculates the water from the
engine through the heat exchanger) that can power the water to the shower
wand. So where is my thinking flawed?

Thanks,

George Cone

Stus-List cockpit shower

2014-07-21 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
The recirculating pump I mentioned is the pump that pulls the water from the
engine and circulates it through the heat exchanger within the water heater.
I am surprised the engine has a thermostat as high as 160 degrees. It is raw
water cooled. 160 degrees sounds like my shower would be good for cooking
lobsters! I guess I probably need to tie into the hot water line, I was just
liking the thought of unlimited water availability.

Thanks,

George

Re: Stus-List Emergency Tiller Bracket Squeaking

2015-06-15 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
On my 40 I had the same problem, the steering became very “tight” or “hard”, I
tied to add grease thru the fitting into the lower tube bad it was too far gone
I guess, the yard at considerable expense had four guys pulling the rudder down
after the quadrant and all had to be taken off, the rudder shaft polished and
tube cleaned. Now it’s great but after 12 hours of Yard time. So get in there
and locate your fitting and fill it before it becomes too late.

My 40 and the 41 I'm delivering south from St John, NB at the moment both have
grease fitting on the tube. These are packed with grease and you give them a
turn every now and then to lube the tube. Mine hadn't been done for quite some

grease in there. That eliminated the squeak for me.

Listers,

The yard is pulling out the Enterprise’s engine tomorrow. They can’t get it to
turn more than 3/4 of the way and they think it’s a bent rod or something.

So, as far as I can see, the options are:

1. They ship this engine to a place that can fix/rebuild. I know this is the
lowest-priced option, but also am aware that there’s a possibility it can’t be
fixed or rebuilt. So, in essence, I’m gambling with all that time and labor.

2. Obtain a remanufactured Universal M-35 or a similar engine from Westerbeke
and get that put in — anyone have any clue as to those costs?

3. Obtain a Beta-30 from Beta Marine for $11,000 including shipping and put
that in. The Beta guy (who has been enormously helpful) says it should be a
perfect match (same mounts, same power, lighter engine)

Anyone have any advice, experience or comments with any of these options. If it
were you, what would you do?

Wanted to get this email out before I threw up.

All the best,

Edd

You also need to shim it some for a perfect fit. I found out about it on one

My Nicro 4" solar vent, maybe 4 years old, would not run this season.
I replaced the NI-MH C cell, left it switched off for a couple days to

but doesn't rotate - same as the with the old battery.

Ideas? solutions?

Re: Stus-List Wet / Dry Vac recommendations?

2014-11-26 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
Go to Home depot, they have a homer that fits on the top of a standard plastic
bucket (you just but the power head part)

, cheap, moderately powerful, use any bucket you normally have on the boat,
good size - fits lots of places

Looking for recommendations for a wet / dry vac for boat and some home. 110v
is fine, but prefer something other than the huge ~16 gallon versions.
Suggestions and links are welcome. Of course…price/value is a consideration.

Thanks!

I have a 1985 Yanmar 3HMF (1985 C&C 37); the engine has never had these

for the water temp gauge they tell me I need to know the thread size for

I am not a mechanic and have no idea how to find this information; I do have

There are iterations of this for tablet, but they say you can only edit, not

There is also Google SketchUp, free, after they probe you for every bit of

2016-08-11 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
I purchased a C & C 40 that had spent 7 years on the dry. This was 4 years ago.
Surprisingly few item were bad, and in fact I still use 2 of the batteries and
they seem to be quite good—who knows? Yes I drained the fuel out and replaced,
but everything works. I am on Lake Champlain, 2 hours from my house. Yes the
maintenance is a challenge and not everything gets done but I have had very
little trouble . Lake Champlain or Lake George aren’t that far from central NY.
And the sail from the bay up the coast and Hudson would be memorable.

in the Finger Lakes or Southern Adirondacks that would allow more frequent use

Fellow list mates,

I am facing a VERY tough decision. I live 7-8 hours away from my boat (it is
in the Chesapeake and I am in central NY state). That is a long story in
itself, but irrelevant.

My boat (1982 C&C 32) has just had it rigging serviced or replaced as needed
due to a yard incident and I have new floorboards that need their finishing
(underside) completed, etc. etc. The boat means a lot to me and the family,
but from what I hear, it is showing the fact it is neglected as we are not able
to get down to the boat to keep her up. The boat hasn’t been in the water
since 2009.

I don’t want to, but am looking to part with the boat unless I can come up with
another reasonable solution. I don’t want to part with her unless it can go to
a good home and/or donate it to a good cause. I have been told that she is
worth less than $10,000 USD based on the Eastern shore of MD.

Thoughts or interest? (Stu, I’ll donate part of the proceeds of the sale to the
list if it sells through here)

The boat is leaking a fair bit of oil which ends up in the bilge. The best
guess when tracing the source is the gasket. Of course the leak is from an
area that is very difficult to get a good look at. The boat has also suddenly
taken to starting very poorly. Anyway those are the symptoms.

Has any one replaced a similar engine? What with and how did it go? Any

Almost time to replace the lenses in Touche's old style aluminum frame
portlights. The "D" shape EDPM inner seal is easy to find at big box stores.

However, I can only find the gray outer gasket at Holland Marine for $5/foot.
Gaskets for newer hatches at hatchmasters.com (Select
Plastics site) are in the same price range. Internet search reveals some that
are close but not exact.

I can reuse the old gasket and have some old gasket if need be. However, I'd
like to find another source for the gasket at a reasonable price.

Some on the list claim it's a readily available storm door or window gasket or
such. I've taken a sample of the gasket to several glass shops and door
repair places in my area with no luck at all.

Can anybody find a manufacturer, supplier or part number for the exact
replacement gasket? Has anybody found a similar gasket that worked? If so,
what is part number? There's a lot of us that would like that information.

I have a flex fold on my 40, they might have over propped me also . I can only
go to 3000 rpm, but it is a two blade, no vibration. I'm happy with it.

Hello all,

I know this has been discussed a lot on the board in the past, but given the
recent discussions of over-propping on the part of flex-o-fold, I'd like to
re-ask the question. The reason is that a folding prop is definitely in my
future, as we have a fixed 3 blade prop on the boat now. We also sail in an
area where crab pots are extremely common from October through April. For that
reason alone I am leaning toward a folding prop. I also saw the rather well
put together article in which a test of folding and feather props was performed
- the one touted on flex-o-fold's website.

By the way, in exchanging emails with flex-o-fold, they are recommending a 3
blade version, so if vibration is an issue with your two blade prop, that may
not apply to me.

With all these considerations in mind, when it comes to a folding/feathering
prop, what do you have, and why do you like it?

Looking forward to your insights,

that if you don't sail in neutral, they would void your warranty (like this
really matters for our boats).

Bill,

It is a two blade fixed prop. It spins!

The singing is probably around 400 hz. I might use my phone with the db app
and find what actual frequency it is. It is not a concerning sound, just
wondered if we are unique.

I have thought about a geared feathering prop but the boat bucks always make me
keep thinking. Grace was never raced and has a fixed prop, no adjustable
backstay adjuster and fixed babystay adjustment. I can live with those though
I have thought about prop and hydraulic backstay adjuster.

Ron,

Yes. We sail with the transmission in neutral and can tell that the shaft is
spinning. We noted it the day that we sailed here home almost three years ago.
We tried to locate the source when we first heard it but can't really locate
the source. She sings on both tacks. It doesn't concern us that she does
this. Just curious if she is unique.

Practical Sailor also suggested Rosemary oil, mixed with vinegar, and squirt it

and won’t walk over it. But I couldn’t find any at Walmart.

And yes, spiders kill bugs, and so do Purple Martins, and I am happy to have
them both around doing what they do. Just so long as they don’t live and shit
on my boat. Like bats, they do their job, then go back to their caves and
Belfries.

I forgot about dryer sheets, I used to use those below, now I can’t remember if
it was for the smell or spiders . . .

And Joe, nothing brings me more joy than throwing a spider in the water, and
watching a deserving fish gobble him up!

We have gobs of them here on the lakes.

Practical Sailor just had some discussion on using this for Cockroaches, and I
see now, silverfish and water bugs – but I see no mention of spiders.
I am trying to get away from spider spray, for obvious reasons, and this looks
like a much more friendly alternative, but if it won’t work, well then . . . I
guess back to the drawing board.

Stus-List Re: Eva faux decking

2021-09-20 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
I put some very inexpensive eva on my cockpit for a test, planning to replace
it with expensive material if it worked. I had two goals, one the admiral
wanted something softer to sit on, and two my lab was always sliding around and
uncomfortable when to boatwould lean. I was concerned the dog would tear up the
foam with his claws, and also the material would stain and look dirty. This
cheap material passed all tests with flying colors. I can only imagine how the
expensive stuff performs.

Highly recommend the use of it.

I plan to use EVA foam on my cockpit floor. I bought two rolls of EVA that

wanted extra material in case. I have no idea how well it will hold up.

With the neutral feed disconnected, unless by random chance the loads on the

The missing neutral back on shore causes all the boats on 1 leg to be in series
with all the boats on the other leg.
If there are only two boats and each has a 1200 watt heater on, they will be
fine. If one boat has a 1200 watt heater and one boat has a 120 watt lightbulb,
the boat with the lightbulb will get most of the voltage.
My calculations for that show the 120 volt lightbulb getting 218 volts.

Also. Don't minimize the wet decks. That can add up quick.

As for sailing the 40 is fine but it really is a one cabin boat unless you know

I sail it up in lake champlain where the water is deep so it's great

started eyeing a 35-3 in VT (and may still consider it) but after looking at a
few 35' boats locally we are realizing they may still be a bit small for our
rapidly growing family of four (and trucking and bottom painting a boat from VT
to NH/ME seacoast adds a lot of costs), we have started looking at some C&C 40
boats in MA/RI area. I'm not afraid of some small projects that can be carried
out while we use it or in the offseason but not interested in a "project boat"
that would need work to be safe before use.

https://www.boattrader.com/boat/1981-c-c-tall-rig-7442829/

Now for the questions:

We have scheduled the two 40's above for a visit next weekend, one we saw in
the boatyard without invitation this weekend. They are both on the hard, and
the one we briefly visited is a centerboard version. The other is a
tall-rig/deep-keel. See the photos linked.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/7xUVbSnHMob2YmYP8

1. On this boat, what is the drain in the keel for? Is it a bilge drain or a
centerboard trunk vent? There was something, perhaps a piece of wood, loose
inside the drain that I could move with a finger.
2. On cabin top starboard, there appears to be a wire cable winch that I've not
seen on other examples. Is this the centerboard pendant perhaps?
3. Is the weeping from the centerboard pivot access ports reasonable or
expected. It may be lubricant as the broker suggests it was somewhat recently
serviced.

Notes: The "smile" needs addressing but seems dry. Depth and knot log sensors
have been painted over with antifoul despite being listed in the description as
features. Gelcoat seems good for its age.

We are leaning towards the centerboard model as the Marina we are targeting in
Portland, ME has limited areas of draft to accommodate a 7.5' keel at low tide.
However, fewer moving parts is a huge advantage as is better sailing
performance. But, we might be forced into a less desirable marina or have a low
tide +/- 1hr time block for coming or going from the marina.

Last general question and ask for advice, what is the mast step situation on
either of these boats and apart from waterlogged cores in the deck and hull,
what are the critical points of interest to a new buyer that thinks he is
somewhat savvy.

All polite thoughts welcomed.

Best regards,
Jeff

Hi George,

Is it a misprint that the max draft is 7'6" ? The number your quoting sounds
like the max draft for CB down on the CB model according the brochure.

I'm familiar with wet decks, our O'Day has plenty.

Now for the questions:

We have scheduled the two 40's above for a visit next weekend, one we saw in
the boatyard without invitation this weekend. They are both on the hard, and
the one we briefly visited is a centerboard version. The other is a
tall-rig/deep-keel. See the photos linked.

Last general question and ask for advice, what is the mast step situation on
either of these boats and apart from waterlogged cores in the deck and hull,
what are the critical points of interest to a new buyer

I do have the bit that fits into my 28 volt Milwaukee. I have 2 batteries and
it raises the main or large people up the mast with ease . I get 4 or more
raises out of a battery without recharges.

I can't imagine a 12v cordless drill would have the torque. I have 20v
dewalt cordless drill,
and even though it will drive a 6 inch hole through the side of my
house, I can't imagine ever
using for triming my headsail. Milwaukee is industrial stuff, so you
pay for it. I think the US
can get industrial Dewalt, but no one here carries that in Can that I
know of.

Stus-List Re: Seadeck / Raptor deck eva foam for cockpit

2021-01-25 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
Bruno,

I offer this as a thought, I purchased some of this material as a test,
planning to remove it and buy the real expensive stuff, because I was
concerned how it would hold up under the stress of my dog. An active retriever.
I was amazed how good it has worked and in-fact bought some more to finish the
job.

Subject: Stus-List Seadeck / Raptor deck eva foam for cockpit

Hi,

The cockpit antiskip is long overdue on our 1987 33-2 and even with really good
deck shoes it is now just unsafe. Our plan is to cover the cockpit sole,
benches and bridgedeck with 5 mm light grey. The templates are made and both
companies (Seadeck and Raptor) do custom work. You send theme the templates and
they send you a quote. But before i send them my precious templates, I would
like to have a ballpark estimate, anybody on the list that have done the same
and could give me a rough estimate. It could be from a C&C 29 to a let's say 37.

I have sailed on boats where the cockpit sole was covered with Raptor deck as
antiskid. I loved the feel of it and the grip is really good and more comfy. I
would prefer this to paint.

I know i could also buy a sheet of the same stuff and cut it myself, but i want
it to look professional if the price is not outrageous.

Thank you!
