Listers, it seems that I may need to replace the old sea furl 2 roller furler
on my 37; (the I measurement is 51 ft); in researching brands and cost, it
seems that Harken is much more expensive than the others...; I am not
interested in a "budget" model, but If there is little or no drop off in
function and service, would one of the other brands work as well? Any info ro
opinions welcome! thanks

Richard, had the same furler on my 38MKII, fortunately it was cracked when I bought the boat in 97.Replaced with a Selden unit which still operates today and functions great for the last 23 years of racing. The mast stays up in the winter, hose it off with water every spring.Ron C.ImpromptuOn Jul 6, 2024 9:52 AM, Richard Bush via CnC-List wrote:Listers, it seems that I may need to replace the old sea furl 2 roller furler on my 37; (the I measurement is 51 ft); in researching brands and cost, it seems that Harken is much more expensive than the others...; I am not interested in a "budget" model, but If there is little or no drop off in function and service, would one of the other brands work as well? 2024-07-06 Thread Nathan Post via CnC-List
Hi Richard,

I had mine replaced with a Harken in 2020 which my rigger recommended.
Happy with it overall although the build quality did have some issues, so
not sure if it is worth the price. In particular, the cage for the furling
drum had some sharp edges left on the inside corners from the casting
process that were not ground smooth before anodizing. These edges quickly
chafed through my first two furling lines when the sail was reefed and the
furling line ended up at the top or bottom of the drum (and yes, it was set
up with the block in the right location to keep the line nominally centered
on the drum. I sanded the edges smooth and repainted with black aluminum
paint and haven't had any issues with it since but was definitely a bit
disappointed in that aspect of it since it came new that way. Otherwise it
runs very smoothly and is reliable.

Hi Richard, my old Harlem was replaced in 2018 with a Schafer. Have not had
a problem in 6 years. I hose it of whenever I'm at a dock, which doesn't
happen often. Can't tell you the model.

Richard,

If you are not racing, Harken has a 'cheaper' line (Ocean) with a single
track in the foil. The ProFurl is cheaper, and it looks it.

My rigger has a used Selden 304 for sale. Not sure if it is the right
size. contact harney yacht rigging. Tell Trevor I sent you.

Granted we are a bit smaller at 29 but we put an aldo furling system on 2
years ago and have nothing but praise for it.

Well built, self install, easy on the rig and reasonable cost.

Seems a lot of charter co use them and they hold up well which was part of
what made our choice.
