Dave,

It's a DIY job for many. Just depends on your level of confidence. It's
fairly straightforward. The broken strand(s) may be at a sharp turn.

Here's the link to Touche's complete steering system rebuild and upgrade.
You might find some wisdom and/or encouragement in there.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/115qLR3c13N2THCRpsOF-7UGGJBweFXfd/view?usp=sharing

I found a broken strand. I also removed the pedestal. However, I removed
it to paint it. For your situation, you shouldn't have to remove the
pedestal.

Stus-List Re: halyard/sheet bags

2021-08-16 Thread Matthew via CnC-List
Chuck:

My 42 has winches around the mast for halyards. When in use,
we coil line around the winches. When not in use, there’s not much to store.

My main sheet, Cunningham, main outhaul, chute downhaul
(foreguy), and traveler control lines all lead to the front of the cockpit.
Like others, we just let them hang down the companionway when in use. When not
in use, we coil lines around winches. An issue someone pointed out to me is
that one of our fire extinguishers is mounted in a location that a hanging line
could grab it. Haven’t settled on a solution for that yet.

I need to get a new electric fuel pump for the Universal M4-30 in

2021-08-16 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Mine is an M35B, not theM4-30. Do you have a mechanical or an electronic
lift pump?

The electronic lift pump on mine was originally a problem, Universal
(Kubota, actually) came out with an upgraded pump and I have had no problem
in several years. The Universal dealer in my area had them in stock... but
obviously that will do you no good.

When I was dealing with the original problem, I had a failure where it was
not possible to get a new pump from a Universal dealer. I bought an electric
lift pump for a Chevrolet pickup truck with the old 283 V8 engine.
Temporarily wired and plumbed it into the system and it got me home quite
well. I still have it on the boat as a backup to the spare pump I keep among
the engine spares.

And, since after all it is a boat, I fully expect that since I have a spare,
and a backup for the spare, that the pump on my engine will never fail
again.

Funny story about dropping halyard tails down the companion way hatch:
We did that on a custom 2 toner back in the early 80’s until a tail got caught
in the prop shaft. The 2 toner was stripped out enough down below that there
was a small gap behind the engine box.

After that I always checked before dropping the tails.
