Hi Josh,
If none of your windows are longer than 4' you may find it more economical
to purchase from McMasterCarr even though the material does cost more. I
bought 3'x4'x1/4" https://www.mcmaster.com/8505K739-8505K962/ for $130 +
~$30 shipping here in MA which was enough to do all 4 windows on my C&C
34 (they also have 3/16" if you want to go thinner
https://www.mcmaster.com/8505K733-8505K862/ for $105). It also arrives
quickly (often the next day for me) even with ground shipping since they
are here on the east coast.

2021-06-14 Thread Dave S via CnC-List
Paul - great write up!

Richard, depending what you are looking for, I might be your idiot - if the
tech is more than you want to deal with you can spend a bit more and buy LiFePo
batteries with the bms onboard. (As i did) Prices Falling on those too. I
(happily) paid more than double the price per a/h from a local supplier,
Canadian branded Chinese stuff, warranty, etc. Next boat, bigger bank, I
might also go the alibaba route as Paul did.

Anyway, I ‘Fired up’ the solar setup on windstar a couple of weeks ago and the
performance so far is exceeding expectations. A game changer indeed.
I’m beginning to see lead-acid batteries as comparable to coal stoves.

Below links to a series of posts on the install - I will simplify and
summarize at some point.

Stus-List Re: Main Halyard Dilemma

2021-06-14 Thread Charles Ferrari via CnC-List
When removing the spinnaker topping lift line, I pulled it out from the bottom
of the mast. It got caught on the spreader support inside the mast. I needed to
attach a hook to the main halyard through the access port at deck level that
contained the halyard sheaves. I "fished" up the mast to catch the tangle and
through pulling up on halyard and down on the topping line it came free.

Hello:

I have a 1985 CNC 33-2. I have been using the same main halyard for the last

main halyard in the mast over the winter. I went to bring it down it does not
want to come down. I am able to pull it down 6" and pull it back up 6". so it
does move. all the other halyards i have loosened to make sure it was not
hanging up on them. I am still unable to pull the main halyard down. Has
anyone ever run into this and does anyone have a suggestion or solution in mind?

I checked piedmont but they also have to order it and simply forward the
exorbitant freight charges to me. I would have to buy a 4x8 sheet from
them.

2021-06-14 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Graham, it's not that I can't find a supplier of acrylic glass but rather
that they don't have the grey tint and 8 foot length. They can order it
just as well as I but typically require delivery to their door not mine and
4x8 full sheet not a 2x8 half. Seems silly I know. I've pretty well
accepted the idea but thought I might save or split the freight costs for
another lister.

Josh,

When I redid mine, I got them from Interstate Plastics. Shipping was pricy,
mostly due to the distance and the overall size. I don’t know if it was as much
as you were quoted, but that was some time ago.

All the best,

2021-06-14 Thread Matthew via CnC-List
To reduce shipping costs, I had my 4’ x 8’ sheet cut into smaller pieces. I
don’t recall now if it was two 4’ x 4’ sheets or some other configuration that
I figured out based on what I needed. The cost to cut was nothing compared to
shipping an oversize package.

Josh,

When I redid mine, I got them from Interstate Plastics. Shipping was pricy,
mostly due to the distance and the overall size. I don’t know if it was as much
as you were quoted, but that was some time ago.

All the best,

Stus-List Gooseneck fitting source?

2021-06-14 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,

Our gooseneck fitting is starting to wear, and the holes in it where the
bolt fits down the center vertically are starting to wear egg-shaped. You
can see a photo here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/re5kalfn9slfidr/Gooseneck%20Fitting.jpg?dl=0

Does anyone know where to get a new fitting?

In the alternative, could I take it to a local weder and have it filled and
re-drilled, or would you think that would be unwise for some reason?

Hard to tell without seeing all the pieces apart, but a better solution might
be to ream out one hole or another, squeeze either a Bronze bushing in or a

Yes, it is the black piece that needs fixing/replacement. I'd love to see

Stus-List Question??

2021-06-14 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List
A club member has a 2012 Tartan 37 with a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel I
don't know the transmission typehe bought it in 2014 got a good
deal then on pricethe engine now has 200 hours but just after he
launched 6 weeks ago, his transmission failedmarine diesel
contractors (3 of them) said transmission could not be repaired.so
he needs a new transmission.

Wrong, he is informed by all 3 diesel mechanics and Yanmar, that there
is not a transmission available to match his Yanmar engine. So guess
what, he has to buy a new engine and transmission.

Has anyone ever heard of this where there is no transmission to fit a
Yanmar?

Stus-List Re: Question??

2021-06-14 Thread Ian Tubby via CnC-List
Rob,

Others will probably want more details on the engine or transmission before
they can answer your question with accuracy, but I will say having been an
(aircraft) mechanic, might be worth looking at a newer transmission from
the same series and having an adaptor plate made to fit the new
transmission to the existing engine, if what the mechanics are saying is
true. However with the popularity of yanmars, its hard for me to imagine
that the failing transmission couldn't be fixed somehow especially if the
problem doesn't require a complete rebuild. Sounds like a job the mechanics
may just not want to take on. My .02. Perhaps others have more direction.

2021-06-14 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
There is absolutely no chance that it is 3/8ths. It's not a port hatch.
It's a long thin window that needs to be slightly bent to conform to the
curve of the boat. I measured it at 5mm but the next closest imperial
measure is 3/16ths. Too thick and it won't bend and even if it does the
tips have too much tendency to pull up since they are only held by VHB
tape. 1/4 inch is quite rigid.

Stus-List Question??

2021-06-14 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List

Ian,

My understanding is that the transmission would require a complete
rebuild and no one seems to be interested in taking that on.  Would an
auto transmission shop do it, don't know.

Nevertheless, the owner bought a new Yarmar engine and transmission and
is back in the water.

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of such a thing.a Yanmar
engine where there is no available transmission to fit it?

And the owner says he has a Yanmar 3 cylinder with 200 hours on it and
who is going to buy it with no available transmission?

Rob,

Others will probably want more details on the engine or transmission
before they can answer your question with accuracy, but I will say
having been an (aircraft) mechanic, might be worth looking at a newer
transmission from the same series and having an adaptor plate made to
fit the new transmission to the existing engine, if what the mechanics
are saying is true. However with the popularity of yanmars, its hard
for me to imagine that the failing transmission couldn't be fixed
somehow especially if the problem doesn't require a complete rebuild.
Sounds like a job the mechanics may just not want to take on. My .02.
Perhaps others have more direction.

he needs a new transmission.

Wrong, he is informed by all 3 diesel mechanics and Yanmar, that
there
is not a transmission available to match his Yanmar engine. So guess
what, he has to buy a new engine and transmission.

Has anyone ever heard of this where there is no transmission to fit a
Yanmar?

Stus-List Re: 2'x8' sheet of smoke grey 3/16th plexi in MD

2021-06-14 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Len Mitchell did his last year. For anyone who didn't know, he sold his
boat a few weeks ago and has since unsubscribed from the list. He bought a
full 4x8 sheet but only needed 2x8 so he has offered to provide me with his
remaining piece. Unfortunately he lives in Ontario Canada. The drive
alone is enough but with Covid-19 protocols entering and exiting Canada,
it's even less worth the effort... Even for free glass. Here are a few
pics he provided.

Stus-List Re: Question??

2021-06-14 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
There are 68 Kanzaki transmissions listed on eBay right now. Perhaps one
will work. There are also sites that sell used and rebuilt trannies. I
find it hard to believe he needs a new tranny AND engine.
