Remember the Spartite kit comes with clay to plug the gap, you’ll need some
modeling clay too.

Joe (and any other 35-1 owners),

I've looked at that as a sealer inside the deck ring at the partners,
and I'm wondering how you managed to plug the bottom of the ring.  On my
boat there's almost no clearance between the head's longitudinal
bulkhead and the mast, were you able to work clay into that space?

You just have to cram it in there somehow. Mine wasn’t perfect, some ran down
the mast and I had to clean it off. There is probably still some on that side.

I managed. I'm on boat now. Just looked at it. Touche' has about a
finger width clearance between that bulkhead and mast. There is about
1/4-3/8 inch gap between headliner and mast that needs to be sealed.

I don't recall how I sealed it. I suspect I jammed clay in there and
pushed it in the gap with a screwdriver or something.

Stus-List Pencil zinc challenge and heat exchanger maintenance

2021-04-27 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Tried to change the pencil zinc in the heat exchanger of Touche's Universal
25XPB today. Normally a 5 minute job.

Unfortunately, this time the zinc chose to stay in the nipple once the
holder was unscrewed. Access is poor and I couldn't grab the little piece
sticking out enough to twist it out.

After much mental exercise, I had an epiphany. I took an extra zinc
holder, drilled and tapped it for a 1/4 inch machine screw. I threaded the
holder back into the nipple, tightened the machine screw and pushed the
zinc into the exchanger. Here's a pic. Hope the link works.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/16jIYQaeFDv8-yo7ZhwBm8-78NJTs4QWp/view?usp=drivesdk

I pulled the end cap off and removed that zinc and pieces of previous zincs.

This is something one needs to do every 3-5 years anyway. The zincs break
off and accumulate in the exchanger. They will eventually partially block
flow through that pass of the exchanger. See:

https://pbase.com/mainecruising/heat_exchanger

If you pull the end cap of your exchanger, do not reuse the gasket. Use a
new one!

Thanks folks for all the responses.  I know a lot more than before, although

I've understood correctly, the general consensus seems to be a double braid is
the way to go for a guy just cruising around.I did remember one response that
mentioned that Sta-set might be more expensive than needed.  What would be
cheaper versions of a double braid.Would Novabraid and Samson XLS be examples?
I do recall the Samson name from decades ago.  Was there a double braid from
Samson cheaper than XLS that's still around?RonWild CheriC&C 30-1STL

My aft wedge (I only used four) slipped last season and cracked my liner. So
last week I filled the partner all around with formula 27, sanded, then painted
over it. I don't have any gap inside the partner, at least this year. Boat is
now in the water and mast is up but not properly sealed. Spartite goes in
sometime in the next week.

Stus-List Re: Line question

2021-04-27 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Yes Ron, double braid is really the only best option. It appears that you
have interpreted the graph in the same manner as I. There are a few other
factors that are going to impact your choice.

I got the Samson XLS dirt cheap for my check stays. I chose it for its
cost first, color second, and ability to splice core to core third. It has
performed fine in this application. My only complaint is that it doesn't
flake neatly and I'm regularly fighting with hockles. Sta-set has never
given me the problems that XLS does. If you can find the novabraid in a
desirable color I might suggest pursuing that option.

There is a color scheme that I found online which you may want to
consider. Green for mainsail, blue for headsail, red for spinnaker.
Solids for halyards. Various fleck colors and patterns for the sheets and
control lines. In this manner you and anyone else can quickly identify any
line associated with the mainsail because of its "green" scheme.

And since you are talking about a halyard, a lot of people like to make a
core to core eye splice for attaching to the headboard shackle. Consider
that the spice will stiffen and thicken line for 1 to 2 feet. This is the
exact area where the line will pass through the masthead sheave. It is
also the place where added resistance when hoisting the main is least
desired. Instead you might try a double over hand on itself. Read more
