Thank you all so much, I've got one coming in the mail. I was down to
my boat today and tightened my lifelines and resealed one of my cockpit
hatches that was leaking last season Tomorrow I'm going to tackle a
manual head to replace a porti-pottie I can't wait to get sailing!

Cheers and thanks again!

Stus-List Lewmar opening hatch screen solutions

2020-03-29 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
My 1995 36 XL/kcb has 5 hatches that were initially 'screened' with plastic
screen material and held in place with sewn Velcro on the screen edges which
'stuck' to Velcro which was either glued or just stuck to the cabin interior
around the hatches via the Velcro sticky backing.
This worked OK but the Velcro glued to the cabin ceiling had to be replaced and
it was a PITA to remove the screens without also the glued Velcro coming with
it! The glued surface also became progressively more unsightly.
I am looking to get rid of the Velcro as I 'refresh' my main cabin interior.
Unfortunately, the Lewmar hatches (which work well, including a partially
opened but lock feature which helps with mildew) have no 'easy' way to hold any
interior mounted screen. There is no rim or edge to hold anything in place by
friction as some hatches screens I have seen made on youtube--furthermore the
surface of the frame that encircles the hole in the cabin into which the hatch
fits looks to be cast aluminum and its surface is  'round' so modifying it to
hold a screen would present fabrication issues. I do not want to remove the
hatches to add screens.
>From the reviews I have seen, the official Lewmar screen kits are pretty
>flimsy and expensive so I am prepared to make a bunch of small screens
>following the Home Depot or Lowes household screen kits which provide an
>aluminum frame, easily cut size, with corner pieces which provide nice
>stability and they are lightweight, etc.
Other commercial screen solutions require something thrown over the open hatch
from outside (held down with lead shot sewn into the edges) and another which
'springs' into shape like some outdoor tents and are held in place with a
string hooked or held by a magnet glued to the inside of the hatch acrylic. I
am not impressed with either of these solutions.
I am toying with mounting one short edge of the screen frame with a small hinge
(maybe a short piano style?) and then using some kind of simple latch on the
opposite edge to hold it in place. Undoing the latch would allow access to the
handle to open or close the hatch. I would consider small magnets but the
screen frame kits are aluminum or plastic and mounting the magnets on the frame
or cabin ceiling is probably a deal breaker.
Before I hack something together to hold them on the ceiling permanently, but
allow them to swing out of the way to close the hatch, etc. I thought I'd check
with the listers if they have any ideas which may work better.
Thanks in advance,
Charlie NelsonWater Phantom

My solution works on Touche' but might not be best for you. When I bought

With the screen removed, the snaps aren't particularly visibly intrusive.
Also, when removed, the screen rolls or folds up fairly small for easy
storage. Would fit in a quart zipper bag.

Now Chatfield Marina is announcing that the common-area grills and picnic
tables on the docks are off limits, and the only people you can have on your
boat are family members who live in your household. So, my crew can’t sail
with me. I’ll have to press my wife and daughter into service :)
