Stus-List Westerbeke Engine parts

2018-09-19 Thread Dan via CnC-List
Hey guys, Here is an email from a fellow boater in Quebec who's got some
Westerbeke parts he's looking to offload. If you're interested, let me know
and I'll give you his email address:

Here is his email to me:

Hi Dan,

I have a Beneteau 361 and it came with a Westerbeke 30B3 diesel engine. The
engine broke in Florida and it had only 1500 hours. Could not get a
replacement from Westerbeke. I had to replace it so I installed a Yanmar
3YM30AE but I kept many parts like the control panel and wiring harness,
injection pump and injectors, heat exchanger, impeller, oil pressure
switch,…

I even had a Adler Barbour evaporator that I bought new but finally decided
to change the entire system for one with a keel cooler.

If you know someone who might be interested please give them my name and
e-mail.

Regards,

Georges

Stus-List 1982 C&C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Roger Slade via CnC-List
Hi all,
New to the group.  I am going to look at a fresh water C&C 25 built in 1982 a
second time and wondered about any ideas of what to look for that is specific
to this model.  I believe this boat has a cored deck and cored hull, so will
look for any respective issues with water intrusion, deformities, etc.  Boat
has been sitting for past 8 years (indoors) so assume it may be difficult to
identify and wet areas of decking, but will look for any cracking or
deformities around stanchions, fittings, mast step, etc.
Boat has a 15hp OMC saildrive which needs a rebuild (seized) , so thinking
strongly of removing that and filling in the hole and going with outboard.
(engine is already out, but drive is stil in).
Interested in any other thoughts on potential problem areas to check out.
Thanks! ___

Roger,

Good luck with your search.

No opinion on the boat but lots of experience with outboards hung on transoms.
If you are sailing in relatively calm waters they are fine. In any kind of a
seaway, however, all you will get is lots o' noise with very little thrust at a
time you probably need it most. Engine just lifts out of the water every time
bow goes down into a wave.

Roger; welcome to the listI have owned a 1982 25 with a saildriveit
has a design flaw which is not worth repairing...water comes in through the
"grommet" on the shaft : I rebuilt mine 3 times before putting an outboard
on...best move.   We simply glassed in the hole.

The 25 sails like a much larger boat; when a breeze comes up, she heels to
about 20 degrees and accelerates...(you will like that); the deck, although
cored, is very strong and well built.  Keep the bottom reasonably clean and
have a good set of sails and enjoy yourself!   If you race, you can still
out-point many other boats even though the head sail sheets to the toerail...I
thought about adding tracks, but you really don't need them.  Feel free to call
or email me if you have specific questions.

It is a great boat...

Re: Stus-List 1982 C&C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Rick Taillieu via CnC-List
Hi Roger,

The ’82 C&C 25 you are looking at would be a Mk2 model.

They have a different deck, keel and cabin layout than the Mk1s.

The deck is cored but not the hull, check for stress cracks around deck
fittings and where the cabin doghouse meets the deck and for
delamination/rotten core around the chainplates and the cockpit floor.

Take a small hammer or screwdriver handle and tap around the foredeck, side
decks, cabin top and cockpit floor for signs of delamination, you don’t need to
tap very hard.

The sound will be a nice sharp sound if it is good or a dull thud if it’s
delaminated.

In the cabin, check for evidence of past water leaks or rot on the main
bulkheads, especially around the chainplates and the beam under the mast step.

With the saildrives you either love them or hate them, my dad had one in his 25
Mk2 and loved it.

I think they used a Honda engine on them so a rebuild or replacement shouldn’t
be too costly if the lower drive is in good shape.

If you decide to put on an outboard make sure you get an extra long shaft model
and a good mount.

The 25s tend to hobby horse under power in waves so you need the prop down as
far as you can get it.

I had a 9.9 XL shaft on my 25 Mk1 and never had a problem with the prop coming
out of the water on Lake Ontario or in Halifax.

You will need to glass in a plywood backing plate inside the transom to support
the mount too.

It being a fresh water boat means it won’t have the corrosion problems of a
salt water boat but you will still need to check the mast and rigging for
cracks and wear.

Good Luck

Re: Stus-List 1982 C&C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Roger,

I sailed a C&C 25 Mk 1 (1975) for 14 years with a variety of outboards hung
on the transom over the course of ownership. My boat had also been equipped
originally with the inboard Vire gasoline powered 7hp which the previous
owner had replaced with a 9.9hp Evinrude 2 stroke outboard. Because the PO
wanted to keep using the controls from the original engine, he outfitted an
electric start Evinrude Yacht Twin and kept the cockpit mounted controls in
play.

All good, but the extra weight of an outboard on a reasonably light duty
transom mandated reinforcement with 3/8" plywood where the outboard bracket
was attached. Even then, stress cracks appeared for the reason described by
David stated: The boat tends to hobby horse in a seaway, especially heading
across waves and the outboard shaft will leap out of the water. When that
happens the engine over-revs and once the shaft gets submerged again, there
are significant force transmitted to the engine bracket and transom. So
should you be shopping for an outboard, try to find the lightest one
possible while having sufficient power to push the boat against tide and
current (8hp is pretty good) but see if you can find an EXTRA Long shaft
motor (25" or longer). That will help the prop stay in the water. Mine was
simply a long shaft at 20" and it had "issues". Also, 4 stroke engines will
typically be less noisy, cleaner burning, and far more fuel efficient albeit
somewhat heavier. They're also more tolerant of ethanol mixed in with the
gasoline than 2 stroke engines. I had twin 6 gal tanks set into the
furthest aft cockpit locker across the transom, but be aware that even then,
it can cause a potential fire danger unless it is well ventilated.

Richard's experience with his boat is pretty similar to mine. The boat
sails like a much bigger boat and having marginal stand up headroom below on
a 25' boat is quite unusual. Unlike Richard, I had tracks installed for my
150 genoa in addition to my working jib and used the toe rail for adding
snatch blocks for the spinnaker control lines. The early 25 had solid
fiberglass hull but a cored deck and if you start adding any deck hardware,
make sure to thoroughly seal the core when drilling holes. Finally, the
boat didn't have an anchor locker so it took some time to figure out the
best way to deploy an anchor when stowing the anchor and line in the
lazarette. All told, it was a fun boat and carried our family of 4 on lots
of weekend adventures. Boat camping at its finest!

Cheers,

Chuck Gilchrest

Re: Stus-List 1982 C&C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Ed dooley via CnC-List
I have a 1983 24, not a 25, but it's a solid hull, not sure that an older 25
would be cored, but as always, I could be wrong. Just in case they have similar
construction, I'll mention a couple of things on mine that needed immediate
attention: The deck to hull bolts all the way around were a little loose,
allowing 3-4 leaks. The previous owner tried caulking the toe rail to deck seam
to fix them, but slightly tightening all the bolts did the trick (not too tight
or the butyl would all squeeze out. One of those leaks must have gone on for
years because it rotted the cabin-cockpit bulkhead on the starboard side, which
was only visible by climbing down into the seat hatch in the cockpit. I scabbed
on marine ply, epoxy and screwed, after cutting the rot away (fun in a tight
space). The 24 has a 3/4" plywood plate connecting the mast's compression post
to the hull. It was rotten, looked like fir ply, so while the mast was down I
replaced that with a thicker piece of marine ply, epoxied to the hull. As for
the outboard comment about it not staying in the water, I sail on Lake
Champlain where we don't get "seas", we get short chop which I don't go out in
if it's over 4 feet, too pounding, not much fun. I have a 6hp Tohatsu SailPro
(plenty of power in fresh water) with the extra long 25" shaft mounted on an
adjustable transom. At the lowest transom setting the motor is almost in the
water, the prop couldn't possibly come out of the water. The short chop puts
the boat at pretty steep angles, which I assume is as good a test of the
outboard as in bigger seas. I think the 25" shaft makes sense.

Stus-List 1982 C&C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Stephen Kidd via CnC-List
I've had my C&C 25 MK II (1980) for just over a year now. We're having a
great time with it. The cabin is what really drew me to her, and it's just
right for glorified camping! It has an 8 hp Honda outboard long shaft
mounted on the transom. I'm on the Potomac near DC, so the prop stays
comfortably in the water. I certainly had some frustrating hobby-horsing on
the Chesapeake where the prop was spending far too much time out of the
water. It was pretty choppy though. The 25 handles far better under sail.

I'd love to go electric, but the upgrade would be about what I paid for the
vessel :-). Also, the toe rail and hull/deck joints have needed some
attention as noted earlier. There was also a not-very-elegant silicone
caulking repair along the hull/deck joint. I removed most of that, put in
some butyl tape and re-tightened the fasteners. Took about 30 minutes. So
far, so good! The PO did some mast step repairs, so that's clearly worth
checking too. That said, I went in about as ignorant as can be and consider
myself lucky to have stumbled onto the C&C 25.

Best of luck!

Thank you Stephen, great info.  Boat would be used primarily on flat water in
the finger lakes region of NY,  perhaps a few weeks during the summer on Lake
Ontario, but not often.

Hey guys, Here is an email from a fellow boater in Quebec who's got some
Westerbeke parts he's looking to offload. If you're interested, let me know and
I'll give you his email address:

Here is his email to me:

Hi Dan,

I have a Beneteau 361 and it came with a Westerbeke 30B3 diesel engine. The
engine broke in Florida and it had only 1500 hours. Could not get a replacement
from Westerbeke. I had to replace it so I installed a Yanmar 3YM30AE but I kept
many parts like the control panel and wiring harness, injection pump and
injectors, heat exchanger, impeller, oil pressure switch,…

I even had a Adler Barbour evaporator that I bought new but finally decided to
change the entire system for one with a keel cooler.

If you know someone who might be interested please give them my name and e-mail.

Regards,

Georges

Re: Stus-List 1982 C&C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
Our 25-2 ('81) was in good shape when we bought her in February 2017. I
never thought once in pulling the OMC for an outboard, the transom is just
too nice and it pushes us easily to 6kts, though I rarely exceed 3.5kts. A
decision made more firm with the purchase of a spare OMC. I priced an
electric drive and then *quickly *eliminated that possibility .

Look below the companionway where the traveler is fixed. The boat is cored
there as another point of close inspection. It's tough to examine because
of the cabin liner hides the sandwich construction. I pulled every
fastener and resealed it once I found out the cockpit seat was cored when
installing a Raymarine ST2000 tiller pilot. Check every inside fastener
and backing plate for telltale color that could indicate seepage. This
goes for the cleat backing plate ahead of the anchor locker. It should be
dry without discoloration. Naturally pull up the cabin sole and inspect
the keel bolts (I thought wheel bolts on my huge International tractor were
large!).

Any discoloration is a concern until eliminated by testing.

Check Yahoo groups for the OMC Saildrive list, subscribe and check for
comments before radically changing the propulsion system. Someone there
will want to buy your OMC if you go for replacement. I would almost go for
a diminutive high output trolling motor before I would install an outboard,
suitable for an inland lake, no cruising.

I regularly single hand with ease as everything runs to the cockpit, even
the downhaul and emergency release for the asym tacker by ATN (with sock).

Stus-List Fridge Fan

2018-09-19 Thread David via CnC-List
My fridge temp swings 10 degrees (34-43) even with tweaking thermostat.
Thermostat or air circulation (its a fairly new thermostat)?

I assume one of you have installed a muffin fan. Did it work and how do you
mount is so it was out of the way but moving air efficiently?

Thanks in advance

Re: Stus-List Fridge Fan

2018-09-19 Thread bwhitmore via CnC-List
I did exactly what you are suggesting, running a computer muffin fan site it
runs any time the compressor is running.  I could probably have kept it going
all the time, as the draw is extremely small.  I used a very small one so as
not to blow air out every time I opened the top.  I was able to run very small
wires under the weatherstriprather than drilling a hole through the side.  I
did that more as a test than a long term solution.  It really helped stabilize
the temperature on the fridge

We use a "Fridgemate" fan.  Uses a single D cell battery that lasts the
season.  Doesn't move much air but keeps circulating the air in the ice
box.  You can find them in most RV supply stores (even Walmart at
times).  We started using them in our RV and just moved the idea over to
the boat.  I have one in my fifth wheel and one in the boat.

Re: Stus-List Fridge Fan

2018-09-19 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
I recently added a blower to Touché’s refrigerated ice box. I used a 40mmx40mm
squirrel cage blower wired in parallel to the compressor.

I stuck it to the side of the ice box where it blows behind the cold plate.
Stuck it with a hook and loop adhesive fastener. Left a bunch of extra wire so
I can pull it out if I defrost the cold plate with a dock hose.

I like the squirrel cage better than a typical muffin style fan.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar Pump

2018-09-19 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
I found a web site for a company in California that sells marine pumps.
The company is called Marine Pump direct. The Yanmar distributor wanted
$609 for a pump for my engine. Marine pump Direct had an almost identical
pump, made by Johnson, for $239.

Customer service was great. When I had some questions for the person who
answered the phone, he went to the warehouse while I was on the phone with
him, and measured the pump for me, and then set it aside when I told him I
would order it on line (cheaper than by phone). I placed the order on
Monday morning; it shipped Monday afternoon, and I received it this
afternoon by US postage. After I placed the order, someone from the company
called me and asked about my engine. He wanted to make sure I was ordering
the right pump for my engine.

I installed the pump this afternoon, and it fit and works perfectly.
