Re: Stus-List USCG Notification of LED Interference

2018-08-27 Thread Kevin Benoit via CnC-List
My tricolor and anchor masthead combo light is from Marine Beam. I’ve never
noticed an issue and have used my VHF pretty extensively at night while the
tricolor was on.

Something to keep in mind for sure though. Thanks for the notice.

Stus-List 1980 24ft C&C sailboat questions

2018-08-27 Thread Sidney King via CnC-List
Hello,

We just purchased a 1980 24ft C&C sailboat.
There are things that need to be repair and to update.

I am looking for some advice on upgrades I like to do with it and the best /
cheaper cost to order from.

1. Canopy cover for the cockpit
2. Solar setup for weekend trips
3. AC / heat / fan solution onshore/offshore use
4. Head

Anyone know the boat specifications about this model?
1. How many people it’s rated for?
2. How tall is the mast?
3. The size of the draft?
4. The displacement?
5. What model is it? Mark?
The haul # is ccy24306m80a

6. Electrical diagram

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
Sidney

Re: Stus-List [EXTERNAL] 1980 24ft C&C sailboat questions

2018-08-27 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
1. Do you mean for storage or to sit under while on the boat?
2. Amazon has WAY better prices on solar panels and controllers than West
Marine. That is where I got mine.
3. There is no way you are going to have air conditioning except at the dock,
but 12 volt fans are nice to have. Likewise a heating solution for a 24 foot
boat won't be that easy to do away from the dock.
4. Do you have a head now?

Sailboats are not usually rated for passengers like small powerboats are. I
would suspect much past 6 people someone would be falling off at some point
because someone else wanted more room and gave them the heave-ho!

*Bimini install on our 25 just can't happen effectively with the boom as
low as it is. I can't imagine the 24 is any better. *

*Shorepower heat (only attended!) by way of ceramic heater. 12v fans are
available through the various ships stores and chandlery. A/C costs a
fortune. *
*You could buy a 5000btu window unit like I did and place it in the
companionway using shorepower. I go out the hatch when its in place.*

Re: Stus-List 1980 24ft C&C sailboat questions

2018-08-27 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Sidney,

1. If by canopy cover, you mean bimini, suggest you look into local canvas
shops and sailmakers. If you’re in the New York/CT area, I know a great outfit
in Mamaroneck.
2. Amazon is a great resource for solar and controllers.
3. I would forget about AC on a 24 — but little battery fans do wonders. Also,
there’s a personal air conditioner called Arctic Air ($35) which is pretty damn
amazing.
4. Many options here. Best to match/upgrade what you already have.

As for specs, see http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=412

Though not positive, I don’t think there were different (MkII, MkIII) versions
of the 24. At 1980, chances are you have the original model.

All the best,

Edd

Re: Stus-List 1980 24ft C&C sailboat questions

2018-08-27 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
On our previous boat, a C&C 27, we mounted a small flexible solar panel to the
companionway hatch, and had a small controller wired to it, along with a
battery combiner.  It was sufficient to keep a Series 27 and 2 batteries from
powered wheelchairs charged.  I used those same batteries for going on 7 years
before I sold the boat.

We spent a lot of weekends on the boat, and would not hesitate to take it for a
week or so cruising on Lake Michigan.
We did not have shore power or a charger on the boat other than running the
engine.
Of course, we did not have AC.
However, we did have a flat panel TV, a decent stereo, autopilot, fans, lights,
etc.

I'd agree that the 24 is too small to install A/C.
Hope this helps,  Bruce Whitmore

Re: Stus-List 1980 24ft C&C sailboat questions

2018-08-27 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
From my past experience (I had a 1974 model):

- there is no really option for a holding tank in that boat. We had a marine
“porta-potty” (installed permanently with the pump out attachment (it would be
illegal in Ontario otherwise)). A larger capacity model fits, but you sit very
high. Generally, the head arrangement on the 24 is not the best (no privacy at
all).

- sailing with more than 5 is questionable realistically, 4 is the max. And
preferably all people know what is going on, because the cock[pit is not that
big and the control lines and the tiller are getting in the way (or if you
prefer, you guests are getting in the way of control lines)

- there is not much in terms of electrical installation (the nav lights and the
cabin lights). Normally, the outboard motor does not have the alternator
cap-able of charging anything. I used to use a portable battery that I plugged
in via a male-to-male accessory plug (cigarette lighter plug)

- one of the better upgrades is to install a traveller in the cockpit; it
dramatically changes how the boat sails (but..., it gets in the way of the
guests)

Good luck
