Re: Stus-List Butyl tape question

2015-11-14 Thread dwight veinot via CnC-List
I used butyl tape on my teak hand rails about 6 years ago. Once the
handrails were off I cleaned them well and applied 5 coats of cetol all
around before reinstalling. I found it necessary to cut holes through the
butyl tape with a punch for all of the fasteners because if I didn't do
that the butyl tape adhered to the stainless steel fasteners often twisting
up into a lump around the fasteners and pulling the butyl out of place. I
used 1/8 inch thick butyl tape and as Jake moted previously I trimmed the
excess that squeezed out of the gap between the handrail base and the deck
with a sharp blade. I have had zero leaks and the cetol coating on the
handrail only now needs a bit of touch up but only on the easy to work on
top surfaces...a couple of touch up coats of cetol should be quite easy to
do before launch next spring. I highly recommend butyl tape for this
application have done it twice previous with tube sealants I can say the
buyl tape is easier to work with and lasts longer...handrail installation
is a 2 person job

That is really cute. An excellent gift or conversation piece.

But for practical purposes, with fuel at 10 bucks
per litre and a fuel density only 55% of
kerosene.. I'll keep my little Force Ten kero heater for bulk warming.

Stus-List Schaefer In-Boom Furling

2015-11-14 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List

Danny

I can send you a few docs off list. My PO was kind enough to
provide the Installation and Operating Guide for our boom. It is a
Beta, but from what I have seen these specs apply to both the Beta
and larger Gamma booms.

Angles are a little different for a spring loaded or the rigid screw
vangs that Schaefer sells with the boom. I have attached scans of
set up instructions for each along with their respective
templates. In either case, the ideal angle for furling is 87.5
degrees (not 87!) . The other angle relevant only to an adjustable
vang is the top range of the angle with the boom, which is 82
degrees. Higher than that is a no no.

I also have a digital copy of the sailmakers instruct tons that I had
(sorry I don't have the I&OG in digital). You can see on that the
angles of each batten and if you take into account the curve of te
leech, that angle all make sense.

Which C&C do you have and what's your set-up like?

Feel free to contact me by email or call any time. And if you learn
anything clever about these beasts, let me know.

Stus-List Pensacola - Havana Race

2015-11-14 Thread Stephen Thorne via CnC-List

All, we completed the Pensacola - Havana Race on C&C 34+ Dejavu last Thursday
November 9th, crossing the finish at 9:36am. We sailed the entire race, only
running the engine to charge batteries. We had five total in the crew and ran
a helm schedule of two hours on the wheel with another crew keeping them
company. The plan was that each person leaving the cockpit would then have a
long break. One of our crew became seasick so we sailed most of race with 4
primary crew. Winds were mostly SE and fairly strong at 20 - 25 knts but one
24 hour period with 30+. We were double reefed most of the race and the boat
behaved well with little weather helm. Dodging freighters at night in the Gulf
of Mexico is part of the race and we had our share of those. AIS is really
helpful and better than radar for those situations. We were the smallest boat
in the race and took 3rd in Division and 3rd overall.

It was great to arrive in Cuba and we had many experiences while there. It is
a vibrant land with friendly and curious people filled with unrealized dreams
due to the controls the Cuban government puts on its citizens.
On Saturday we participated on the Havana Cup Race along with 20 other boats.
Only one other boat pointed as high as Dejavu and that was the J130. This gave
us a big advantage against much bigger boats but on our final tack toward to
finish we messed up a maneuver so we ended up 5th in that race. We are in Key
West waiting for a weather window to sail up to Tampa and then later back over
to Pensacola.
