Re: Stus-List Back stay chain plate

2015-07-19 Thread Dan Grant via CnC-List
Hello all
Hey Martin just wanted to thank you for advice on this project
I was able to save most of the old chainplate and had no problem glassing it in.
The museum curator was also great in getting me drawings.
The boat went into the water June 16th and I just now got back from first solo
sail !
I wonder what big project is next .

Stus-List Diesel issues

2015-07-19 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
On the way to and from our racing area, my Beta-25 with only 390 hours on it
was running fine and then it dies.

It started up right away, ran for a few minutes then died again.

We sailed out of the channel for about 10 minutes, started it up again with no
problems and it ran for 20-30 minutes before
I shut it down for the race.

On the way back we motored around loafing at about 4 knots for 30 minutes as we
headed for the channel back to the slip.

Halfway in it died again. I used the electric fuel pump to be sure it was
'primed' and it started right up and then quit again after about
30 seconds.

By then, we were close enough to the slip to sail in--kept the main up for just
such an event--which we did without issues (a competent crew
of 6 can do that!).

Ran it in the slip at full throttle and it died again after about 3 minutes.
Started tight up, ran again at full throttle and it died again.

Fuel tank is only 3 hours into a full tank (48 gallons) and the pick-up tube
was replaced last year to go further down into the tank so neither
the fuel level or pick-up tube level can be issues. I also added some Stan-dyne
(?) when I last filled the tank earlier this year.

The Neuse River was almost flat since we had only a 5 knot breeze so I doubt
that it was 'stirred up' crud from the tank.

Haven't replaced the fuel filter between the tank and the engine or the engine
mounted one this season (did it last year) so that is my first chore
since IMHO it looks like a fuel issue or an air in the fuel line issue.

I also will check all the clamps that are used to seal the fuel line from the
tank to the engine.

Does the list have any other suggestions/ideas besides what I listed?

TIA,

Re: Stus-List Diesel issues

2015-07-19 Thread Glenn via CnC-List
If the fuel line has a filter on the end of it at the bottom of the fuel
tank, it can suck fuel until it clogs. When it stopped sucking the fuel
up (engine stops), it unclogs and then sucks fuel to the combustion
chamber againuntil it clogs again. Obviously, the time of this
process varies (as it has for you). If it doesn't have a fuel filter at
the bottom of the fuel line in the tank, then it is likely a clogged
fuel filter elsewhere. If you change the fuel filter on the engine, and
it keeps happening check the tank idea. Some Universal engines had that
problem.

Good luck.

Fuel tank is only 3 hours into a full tank (48 gallons) and the pick-up
tube was replaced last year to go further down into the tank so neither
the fuel level or pick-up tube level can be issues. I also added some
Stan-dyne (?) when I last filled the tank earlier this year.

The Neuse River was almost flat since we had only a 5 knot breeze so I
doubt that it was 'stirred up' crud from the tank.

Haven't replaced the fuel filter between the tank and the engine or the
engine mounted one this season (did it last year) so that is my first
chore

since IMHO it looks like a fuel issue or an air in the fuel line issue.

I also will check all the clamps that are used to seal the fuel line
from the tank to the engine.

Does the list have any other suggestions/ideas besides what I listed?

Hi Joel,
My son and I did the Race to Baltimore yesterday. Light winds but a fun race w
60 boats that finished next to the docks in the harbor. Damn hot. After the
race we took a slip and plugged into shore power to run the AC and the cabin
was heaven after the party.

Dan,

Thanks for the update and congrats on a successful repair/upgrade. It seems
that with older C&Cs we don't have to wait long for the next project.

If you are going to spend a lot of time sailing solo, sail and line handling
upgrades often result in immediate gratification.

Many cnc-list participants sail solo and will have good ideas for the quick
return up grades. Somewhere out on the interwebs is a solo sailing manual
written by a Olson 30 sailor based in BC. The SSS group out of San Francisco
likely has a link on there web site.

Hey Martin just wanted to thank you for advice on this project
I was able to save most of the old chainplate and had no problem glassing it in.
The museum curator was also great in getting me drawings.

Stus-List Raymarine Autohelm problem

2015-07-19 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Seems my Raymarine 4000STPlus has a problem. It does not work. The display is
displaying and all buttons seem to work. Today it kept displaying XTE. I pulled
the motor connection and read a short pulse of volts at the socket when I tried
to change course through the controller. The motor surged for a while and
stopped. It seems like the motor is OK. The display reads a magnetic heading
and seems to function OK, but when I push AUTO and change heading, nothing
changes except the display heading.

Wiring problem? I have a wired remote that may be lying under a pile of sails,
or a tool bag. Could that be causing interferance?

Here’s a link to the repair manual for the 4000+:

http://www.bristolsailboats.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/st40001.pdf

If the motor works, the problem is probably inside the wheel, either the gear
or the belt. It’s easy to take apart and investigate.

If the fuel line has a filter on the end of it at the bottom of the fuel tank,
it can suck fuel until it clogs. When it stopped sucking the fuel up (engine
stops), it unclogs and then sucks fuel to the combustion chamber againuntil
it clogs again. Obviously, the time of this process varies (as it has for
you). If it doesn't have a fuel filter at the bottom of the fuel line in the
tank, then it is likely a clogged fuel filter elsewhere. If you change the
fuel filter on the engine, and it keeps happening check the tank idea. Some
Universal engines had that problem.

Good luck.
