Stus-List Interesting 35-1 interior reconfiguration

2015-04-24 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
The interior of this 35-1 has been significantly reconfigured. I don't
think this was an option. The galley has been extended into the starboard
side settee. Some of the pictures are upside down but just shows what you
can do.

There was a very early Redwing 35 at the club I was at in Ontario that came
from the factory without the dinette. It had settees on both sides and a
centre table that folded on both sides.

It was called “Godspeed” and was for sale in the Kingston area last year.

David — I’ve had really good luck with these:

http://www.rei.com/product/850679/princeton-tec-vizz-headlamp

Good battery life, and they can be very bright when needed. Also, the
top-mounted on/off/color/dim switch has a mode where you can lock out
operation, so you don’t accidentally burn the batteries after stuffing the
light into a bag (and accidentally hitting the switch). The red mode works
great at night on a boat.

Re: Stus-List Spinnaker pole storage

2015-04-24 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Joel,
The OEM setup on our boat clipped the front of the pole to a large ring on the
pulpit and the aft end went onto a rail mounted SS toggle. The toggle was
missing when I bought the boat and it was sail tied to the toerail, crew
complained when they sat on the rail over the pole. I leater learned to rig the
pole to the mast regardless, as it stopped the genoa sheets fouling the pole
car. I mounted a Forespar deck chock I don't like, to the deck to store the
pole closer to the chainplates. It has a dildo that fits inside the pole end. I
think a simpler SS ring would work better and never catch a line? We make it a
habit to point the dildo down when the pole is off the chock, so it doesn't
catch a line, but I hope to fab something better. The chock allows easier
hiking on the rail.

A don't like the stanchion mounted pole holder as the end sticks out past the
max beam and can become a problem and catch things when docking.

Had all kinds of headlamps for boating, backpacking etc. By far the most
useful for on the boat at night standing watch and in camp at night is the
Petzl Emergency headlamp. Super light, has red mode, long lasting batteries
and NOT blindingly bright at night. I have had mine for going on 10yrs now
and still works like a charm and I use it a ton. In fact, you will see all
of the volvo guys are using them this year for their night watches, so you
know they will hold up in the Southern Ocean, should you ever bring your
C&C there. http://www.rei.com/product/838548/petzl-elite-headlamp

Now for working on the boat in dark corners we use more traditional lamps.
We have two black diamond head lamps and I would not buy another. The
switches on both are about to give out / finicky and the band doesn't stay
tight etc. The best one I've owned before has been the Tikka XP2 from
Petzl. Unfortunately it was lost, but I will be buying another when the
Black Diamond gives out.

As for Home Depot and Harbor Freight cheepos. Well you get what you pay
for. You will likely be replacing it next season when it breaks. (I shop
both HD and HF, but not for head lamps.)

The interior of this 35-1 has been significantly reconfigured. I don't think
this was an option. The galley has been extended into the starboard side
settee. Some of the pictures are upside down but just shows what you can do.

Re: Stus-List 35 modified keel

2015-04-24 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
My 38 mk2, Imzadi, has a 5’3” nominal draft (with cruising gear it’s probably
more like 5’6”) after shortening the keel and installing a torpedo bulb made by
Mars Metals. I took 10” off the end of the keel (800 pounds if I recall
correctly) and installed a bulb made by Mars that weighed around 1150 pounds.

Allen, Pamlico Sound may even be a bit more shallow then Albemarle Sound. The
deepest spot between here and the Atlantic is about 24 feet, and most is less
than that. And I plan to go to the Bahamas one of these days, so the original
6’1” draft just would not do.

I lost some pointing ability because of the change, probably one or two degrees
of apparent wind. I used to be able to sail up to about 29-30 apparent, now it
is in the 32-33 range. When I was racing seriously with a good deck sweeper
headsail, I could still outpoint a 35-2 that raced in the Pamlico Sailing Club.
He outran me downwind, so the two boats were pretty evenly matched.

I suspect that the end plate effect of my flattened torpedo bulb (it is about
twice as wide as it is high) has some of the same impact on the keel that your
wing has. Basically, I’m pretty happy with the modification. Particularly when
I am sailing in skinny water (like every time I go out).

Just an observation and maybe not relevant for a C&C 35.

I have a C&C 30-2 with a shoal keel, my close friend Richard Stoltenhoff had a
sister ship SeaCure with the deep keel, Both boats were race equipped white
sail boats. I've sailed both boats and they were well matched in the winds we
had on LI Sound.

When Richard moved south to the Albemarle Sound (20 foot average depth where we
sail, but tight 6' entrance to the creek and docks), he had his keel shortened
and a Mars Metal bulb applied. We raced his boat after my admiral decided she
didn't want her boat dinged by "ignorant" racers. Although SeaCure remained
fast and retained her stability with the bulb, we had great difficulty fetching
marks. She just wouldn't point as high as Septima and the extra tacks or
overstands just killed us.

After Septima was hit by a lightening strike, I had her short hauled and
ironically she was placed adjacent to SeaCure on the hard. I looked at both
keel stubs and they seemed to my eye to be identical. My lead keel portion
however had significant additional longitudinal area. His deep mounted bulb
was offset by my wing and stability was very similar. My lateral resistance
though was much greater and we could climb our way to a mark without pinching.

Interestingly enough I've just written an article on Mars Metal for the next
issue of Professiomal Boatbuilder Magazine. Their ability to provide not only a
bolt on two piece bulb but the design service to recommend the weight of bulb
to achieve the same sailing stability as the deep draft keel is discussed in
the article. It has been a very successful program for the company.

Just check out the intensity (lumens) and get really bright ones that also have
low intensity and of course red.

I haven't sailed the Southern Ocean, but I've done a lot in the Atlantic and
Caribbean and I still haven't found a headlamp (including Petzl) that can stand
up to the salty goodness that the sea throws in my face all too often.

Had all kinds of headlamps for boating, backpacking etc. By far the most useful
for on the boat at night standing watch and in camp at night is the Petzl
Emergency headlamp. Super light, has red mode, long lasting batteries and NOT
blindingly bright at night. I have had mine for going on 10yrs now and still
works like a charm and I use it a ton. In fact, you will see all of the volvo
guys are using them this year for their night watches, so you know they will
hold up in the Southern Ocean, should you ever bring your C&C there.

Now for working on the boat in dark corners we use more traditional lamps. We
have two black diamond head lamps and I would not buy another. The switches on
both are about to give out / finicky and the band doesn't stay tight etc. The
best one I've owned before has been the Tikka XP2 from Petzl. Unfortunately it
was lost, but I will be buying another when the Black Diamond gives out.

As for Home Depot and Harbor Freight cheepos. Well you get what you pay for.
You will likely be replacing it next season when it breaks. (I shop both HD and
HF, but not for head lamps.)

Use what climbers do. In Canada, MEC is a good place to buy them.

One of the better brands is the Black Diamond.

The department store ones are usually 1/3 price (or lower), but they are
also at least 1/2 as good.

If you by climbing gear lights, you may have problems with white/red.

Re: Stus-List Interesting 35-1 interior reconfiguration

2015-04-24 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

You got that right Joe.

Hatches & head skylight are good clues. It's also not a Redwing,
being a whole year newer than my boat... which is a few years younger
than a Redwing.

I like your comment about losing the best sea berth. This yacht is
okay for a single-handed laker or coastal crustier. (I meant cruiser
but auto correct said crustier and I like that better.)

I say good for single hand because the "pullman style" galley is a
pain in the arse if there are more than two people aboard. Either the
cook is annoyed that someone is travelling through the work area or
the skipper is annoyed that a cook is always in the way. If the cook
& skipper is the same, no problem.
