David,

I know that Lake Wabamun (lived in Edmonton for 5 years); but I assumed that
despite the lake's size, you all must sail together. There is another C&C
around him; when I think about it, I think it is a 27 (not 26).

Marek I dont know him personally, and he has that boat on his own mooring
about mid-lake and is not affiliated with either yacht club. I was parked
next to him last year at crane out. If I see him this year I will definitely
say hi for you. We crane out on the 11th of October.

Re: Stus-List Annapolis boat show

2014-09-21 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
I'd be up for meeting C&Cers at the boatshow.
I like to go on the last day, Monday the 13th, spend the day at the show, then
meet around 5pm at Pussers Carribean Grille upstairs.
They usually have a good Reggae band. We could find a table inside if the band
is too noisey. It's fun to watch the show tear down, which is 6 to 8pm, I
think. I have a 2 1/2 hr drive home, and leaving later means avoiding a lot of
traffic in Baltimore and Wilmington for me and a quicker trip home.

I prefer the food and prices at the Boatyard but think it will be packed and
little harder to find. Maybe you locals can suggest a better place or time? I'm
open.

Stus-List Asymmetric Setup on C&C 26

2014-09-21 Thread Sam Salter via CnC-List
Last winters project - replacing my 3 blade fixed with a 2 blade folding
Flexofold was really successful. I think I got 1/2 to 1 extra knot in lighter
air, and better forward and reverse thrust. But it's very subjective as I'm
comparing from memory.

This winter I think I'm going to finish sorting out the asymmetric.
I redid the masthead sheaves and fitted a spinnaker crane when I had the mast
down a couple of seasons ago. This winter I'm thinking about getting an
asymmetric kit from Sailrite and sewing it myself over the winter.

I'm looking for cockpit layout suggestions or comments from any 26 owners (or
anyone else).
I'm probably going to launch from the bag, out of the companionway and over the
starboard side. That's how we fly the asymmetric on my sailing buddies Hotfoot
20. But the size and forces will be a lot more. Anyone see any concerns there?
Usually 2 of us sail the boat; Tiller steering.
What winches do you use? Those on the combing or the ones on the coach roof?
How do you have the tack line set up? Where are the tack line and halyard line
led back to?
To clutch or cam cleat or ...? What side?

Any other advice or suggestions would be welcome.
(If I can get an extra 1/2 to 1 knot every winter, I'll be doing 15 knots in no
time :-) )

sam :-)

The Fleet Reserve Club, next to Pusser's, is open to the public during the

Stus-List Annapolis boat show

2014-09-21 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
I would be up for a meeting too. Pussers has great drinks but terrible food
unless you stick with appetizers only. The Chart House is much better in my
opinion and it would be a little further away from the boat show tear down
mess. Even though I'll be at the boat show on Saturday, I'm local and can meet
on Monday evening...

Re: Stus-List Anchor chain cover

2014-09-21 Thread Patrick Wesley via CnC-List
"A stitch in time saves nine", amazing how valid are some of the old sayings.
If I had replaced the chain securing the anchor chain cover when I first
noticed it my crew would not have dropped it overboard while anchoring in
Suchia!

Would anyone in the Victoria/Sidney BC area have any ideas about finding a
replacement? New one from the catalogues would likely require removal of the
vertical tube housing and rebedding of the new one.

Thanks, Patrick

Great idea Bob,
It's tough to capture everyone's needs.
Some people may be coming after the show with their cars at the football
stadium while others will be parked nearby, or parked over in Eastport. If you
are driving in purely for the C&C group, I can understand picking a place clear
of the show, but I think most will be attending both?

I personally like to watch the show breakdown, it's free and usually a great

I would be up for a meeting too. Pussers has great drinks but terrible food
unless you stick with appetizers only. The Chart House is much better in my
opinion and it would be a little further away from the boat show tear down

Re: Stus-List wife dosen't like it when the boat leans

Years after my wife sailed with me from Hawaii to Seattle and San Francisco (79
and 81) she was able to articulate the difference in her perception of the
trips and mine.

Sailing conditions I recall as "great" and "a good adventure" she perceived as
"frightening" and "terrifying".

As others have mentioned the extra training in how to handle a sail boat and
use the radio, auxiliary power, and how to dock with out damage could help
change frightening to fun.

Subject: Stus-List wife dosen't like it when the boat leans

David,
Well said. I am learning late in life that many wives don't appreciate when a
sailboat heels or as mine says, ". . . don't like when it leans".
And what I find challenging and fun about sailing like short tacking through a
narrow channel or sailing hard on the wind close hauled, causes my wife anxiety
or grief. Just when the wind starts getting good, she usually asks to go
somewhere for a swim.

I recently went sailing w a friend with the same problem. His wife is very
similar to mine. We've all been friends since before we married over twenty
five years ago. He wanted to show off his new boat and his wonderful country
of Holland. His plan; the guys went sailing for 10 days in Holland while the
wives went touring by car through France. I noticed most sailboat crews were
guys, many skippers were alone, a very few white haired couples and the same
number of twenty-ish couples. My friend and I had a great time sailing
whenever possible and remarked several times when the boat was making 8 to 9
knots and heeled to 25 degrees, and we were having fun, "The girls would hate
this." One leg on the North Sea, we sailed w just the 110% downwind in 27
knots wind making 9 knots boatspeed. On the return, we had 18 to 20 knots on
the nose. Sailing would have taken longer, causing us to miss getting a slip,
so we motorsailed w a reefed main making 8.3 knots. The main steadied the boat
so she maintained momentum and sliced better through the waves. I remember
playing w the vang to get a better shape to the top of the sail, because the
boat had no traveller. The girls would have hated it.

So, I'm looking for suggestions to keep both the boat and the wife, happy.

Re: Stus-List c and c 29-2 mast cap.

2014-09-21 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Not sure if your mast top is removable? Don't have the answer but a few things
to consider.
Ours has a welded top and the sheaves are removed through the front and back of
the mast. I suppose it is possible if you remove the halyard to take the weight
off the sheave. Then carefully secure the sheave with a length of line tight
around the sheave with both ends outside the mast. Loose this and the sheave
will fall down inside and possibly jamb up everything or fall to the step.
Needle nose vise grips may work to grab the sheave and you can use a lanyard to
secure the tool and the part. You probably have to use a hammer and punch to
move the sheave axle, a Stainless Steel pin which probably supports another
sheave?

Stus-List sailing under jib alone

2014-09-21 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List
I am not saying it hasn't happened, but how many of you guys (and gals)
have seen a rig fail on a C&C..I have been sailing for approx. 40
years and have witnessed rig failures but not one on a C&C. I did see a
'chain plate' get pulled up approx one inch threw the deck on a C&C 36
but the crew got the rig depowered before any more damage could
occurmain was up as well.

My 32 has a mast the size of a telephone pole, keel stepped, baby
stay... and I sail with a 135% all the time and will continue to
sail with the jib alone and will not feel threaten in any way shape or
form about rig failure as long as my standing rigging is sound, as it
should be!

What Fred said matches my understanding of why there may be some
concern expressed by some sailors regarding sailing with head sails only.

In the very old days the ship's rudders were so small and weak
balancing and steering the vessel by the location and trim of the
sails was necessary. Modern designs and construction methods allow us
to compensate for an un-balanced rig with mechanical advantage and a
strong rudder.

During the heyday of IOR designs, including fractional rigs, many
designers and owners in search of the smallest advantage would put up
a lightly built small section mast. I recall seeing 4 and 5 spreader
rigs on 40' boats with very small section mast extrusions. Many of
these rigs appreciated the additional fore and aft stabilization that
the mainsail gave to the mast itself. Many of these rigs went over
the side owing to operator error.

For those of us sailing a well maintained non-custom (thinking
Evergreen here) C&C design with the headsail only in most conditions
but certainly in light air will not jeopardize the rig's stability.
If you find yourself in heavy air "pounding" conditions it may be well
to sight up the mast as the boat makes a hard landing to be sure the
mast "pumping" (fore and aft") is under control. In those extreme
conditions some mainsail load may add some dampening to the mast pumping.

I imagine that not sailing with jib only applies to fractional rigs
without running back stays. It could also apply to mast head rigs
with out back stays.

I've read that sailing under only jib is bad because it places an
uneven load on the rigging. Seems to me that the load is minimal in
light air and the total load is a lot less under one sail.

2014-09-21 Thread Tim Goodyear via CnC-List
On the 35-3, you would not have to affect the standing rigging to change a
sheave. It should be possible from a bosun's chair (at the crane or on other
halyards). I would suggest going up to check what it looks like before
gathering the right tools and planning the job. On the 35-3, the sheaves are
rigged similar to those on the boom. There is a stainless cover over one end
of the sheave axle. When that is removed, you should be able to push the axle
out and remove the sheave (holding it as others suggested). Yours may be
different, but it may not be necessary to remove the mast cap.

Re: Stus-List Anchor chain cover

2014-09-21 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Patrick,

Try the Sidney Sailor exchange (or whatever they
call the damn thing these days, humbug).

http://www.theboaters-exchange.com/

It might take some time wading through all the
old stuff but I wouldn't be surprised if you find
what you need. BTW, take a pencil rub of your
deck pipe oval so you can match it.

Would anyone in the Victoria/Sidney BC area have
any ideas about finding a replacement? New one
from the catalogues would likely require removal
of the vertical tube housing and rebedding of the new one.

Thanks, Patrick

Burt,

If you replace the attachment fitting, consider

From what you've described, there is some
clearance on the underside of the
car. Perhaps an eye nut bolted from underneath may work. Look at this item:

It comes in 1/4 (400 lbs SWL), 5/16 (800 lbs
SWL), 3/8 inch (1320 lbs SWL). I have one of
these and its eye bolt equivalent in 1/2 inch
installed in Touche' masthead for attaching spinnaker halyard blocks.

The adjusting line is continuous. I think the
correct size stainless eye bolt will fill the
bill and keep my hard earned $$ in my pocket to
be used for more pressing things like a new AC

The track has a "T" slot on the bottom so the
bolts slide into any position and use the
existing holes from the original setup.

High quality, possibly a bit more expensive
than Garhauer, adjusts under load, a great
improvement over the original equipment.

Very happy with the quality and service from Garhauer.

I also worked with Guido. I replaced my
traveler this spring. I sent them my old track
and they used it as a drill template, so
installation was easy with no new holes to drill.

The Garhauer cars are low friction, and high
quality. With the increased mechanical
advantage and continuous line it was a major improvement for modest sum.

Or better yet, talking to him about replacing

Burt,

You should have several options.

You might consider talking to Guido or Mark at

Re: Stus-List c and c 29-2 mast cap.

2014-09-21 Thread Russ & Melody via CnC-List

Hi Bev,

Removing the masthead crane (the thing you're calling a cap) will
require dropping the forestay & backstay, for most older rigs. This
is an unusual practice if servicing at a mast tower. If you have a
roller furling jib then it's definitely not worth the bother.

Normally you secure the sheave and drive out the axle, as others have
mentioned. The best way to secure the sheave... and it is very
important to secure he sheave, is to attach a length of PVC tape
(commonly called "electricians tape") to some small stuff (string)
and lay the tape into the sheave. Rotate sheave to retrieve the tape
and continue to pull the string through. When you have the string
end, hitch it to the "other" part then tighten down to lasso the
sheave. This way it is captured and will not fall very far down into
the mast if you lose control of it.

Cheers, Russ
