Re: Stus-List Winch for sale?

2014-06-21 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
I scanned my old Barient catalogue, and Stu put it up on the photoalbum
under "winches".
I also sent it to Allen at L-36.com. Stu's version is a little compromised
size-wise, but the L-36 version is the full-size scan.
http://l-36.com/barient_catalog.php
Almost all the Barient winches and their power ratio are shown so you can
compare to other winch brands. The power ratio using a 10" handle compares
directly to the nominal winch sizing that Lewmar, Andersen, etc. use.

Stus-List hull number distinction between 38 and Landfall 38

2014-06-21 Thread PME via CnC-List
Hi,

When I first purchased my LF38 I was a bit surprised with the CCY hull number
as I thought I read somewhere that the Landfalls were build in Canada. I know
that the LF38 shares the same hull as the 38, but what in the hull id
distinguishes a LF38 from a 38? I have always assumed that my hull number 88
was that out of the LF38's only.

I am guessing that all LF38's are build in the USA and all 38’s are built in
Canada and as such the later would have ZCC hull id. is this correct?

Here is my LF38 hull id: CCY38088M81D

CCY:C&C built in Rhode Island
38: model length (but FL title list 37’)
088:hull # 088
M: model year format
81: model year 1981
D: built in November

Paul — as far as I know, the LF’s were all built in Rhode Island. And the hull
differences lie primarily in the keel design; while the original 38 has a deep
fin keel, the LF38 has a shallower-draft, but longer, keel. The 38’s draw
between 6’-1” and 7’-7”, while the LF38 draws 4’-11”.

Re: Stus-List Annapolis to Bermuda Race nearing finish

2014-06-21 Thread Steve Sharkey via CnC-List
Thanks Dennis. Impromptu does like light air and we worked hard to keep the
boat moving consistently. Fortunately it also does pretty well in heavy air.
The return home had much heavier weather and we were able to keep the boat
moving upwind in over 30 knots through a rough Gulfstream passage with a storm
trysail and heavily reefed jib. Back at the dock at 6:20 this morning and
happy to be home! Hope that you guys also had a good ride home.

Steve’s keel/centerboard arrangement was perfect for this light air race; he
was able to smoke almost everyone through the Chesapeake, and he even caught up
with many of the Class 1 and 2 boats. Kinda depressing that it took us almost
three days to get out of the Bay…

Also, we were one of several boats (mostly Class 1) that paid for and attending
a weather briefing by Jennifer Clark. The Office was the only boat in the
briefing that following the weather routing. We actually did make up some time
once we were out of the Chesapeake, but by then, it was a bit late.

Stus-List change of handle

2014-06-21 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List

Mike:

Call Philip Stevens, Sealand Industries, in Chester and get a price from
him to go get your boat and truck it home. I bet your will spend at
least half the cost of going to get it yourself and sail it back, plus a
week's vacation, added to the risk of sailing a new boat you know
nothing about on a 400 mile trip. The boat probably does not come with
a 'liferaft' and if you can't borrow one for the trip, you will have to
rent one for a week and that's another few $hundred bucks$.

You will get different opinions but that's what I would do. Congrats on
the new boat.look forward to seeing it at the club.

Re: Stus-List change of handle

2014-06-21 Thread Andrew Burton via CnC-List
If it was my new boat I couldn't wait to sail it. I'd take a week or so to
do the trip (this assumes it passed a good survey). I'd plan to leave
Dartmouth and get the boat sorted out over the course of a day heading for
the C Cod Canal and then stop at one end. I'd probably spend the next day
sorting through any problems and getting to know the boat better. Depending
on the forecast, I'd either go to Provincetown or Marblehead the next day.
probably Marblehead because from P-town it's a long overnight to NS. from
M-head, I'd head up the coast to Portland ME and then start thinking about
weather and departure points for NS. All this while I'd be learning the
boat and getting more comfortable with her. When the weather was right, I'd
hop over to Yarmouth and then up the coast in hops to Halifax. By the time
I arrived, I'd have the boat sparkling and have gotten to know her very
well...and have a mile-long list of things to do.
Cost may well be more than hauling the rig and dismantling for trucking
then putting her back together again at the other end, but I doubt it. And
the adventure and experience would be priceless!
YMMV

I am pleased to report that the boat has been launched and that the launch went
smoothly; the engine (Yanmar 3HM) fired right up and has plenty of power in
reverse, (2 blade fixed prop); the only thing I wasn't ready for was, when
under power, there is a steady pull to port, like when a car is out of
alignment;is this a normal thing or should I be looking for some
adjustment?

Tomorrow we hoist the sails! It is reaay nice to be back on the water, 93
degrees and all!

IMHO that Frers 33 is a speedy well built boat and I think a very fun boat
to sail and from what I could find out I liked it a lot, there were none
around here to see.I checked one out quite seriously before I got Alianna
and even still I wonder if I made the right choice for me and what I like to
do on the water.Mike, I would like to crew with you for a day when you get
her home because I would like to feel what a Frers 33 is like under sail,
nothing to do with meeting 7you; sorry.I want to feel her trimmed for
performance; maybe Robert would like that too.I'll bring the treats.coud be
a good day on the water.you will have enough cruising comforts in your new
boat and there wont be many cruisers blowin by you upwind
