[chirp_users] Python 3 port

2020-09-04 Thread Greg Shuflin via chirp_users
Hi, I'm a relatively new user of Chirp. I like the software and I'm interested
in contributing to porting it to Python3. I notice that there's a py3 branch
that hasn't had any new commits since February. I spend some time trying to get
that branch to run on my system without success, and I'm not sure if it's
expected to work in either Python2 or Python3 at this point. In any case,
what's the best way to contribute to moving it to Python3?

Sorry that I can't answer any of your questions, but I did want to take
a moment to thank you for volunteering to help. I really do appreciate
this fine bit of software and all the work that the people who wrote and
maintain it are doing. So thanks to you and all those involved with
Chirp since it's beginning!

[chirp_users] Enable the Settings Tab in CHIRP?

2020-09-04 Thread Benjamin
Hello,

I've been looking at some of the CHIRP tutorials on YT, and I notice
that some radios like the Baofeng UV5R have a settings tab where global
radio options can be set.

I've set up CHIRP to work with a Yaesu VX-120 (using the vx-170 menu
option - only a keypad difference between the two models) and can
download\upload without issue, but I was wondering if I should be seeing
a settings tab on the left. Not all radios seems to have this tab. Is it
an optional developer feature, or can it be enabled?

Nothing in the user manuals on this unless I've missed it.

Either way, I like the software.

Thanks.

There is no way to enable/disable a Settings tab. It will be displayed
if there is one available.

If there is no Settings tab, then the radio either has no global
settings (probably very rare) or the volunteer developer opted to only
support the per-channels settings or has not yet gotten to adding the
global settings.

If there is a Settings tab but the settings area is blank, most likely
there is a setting that is out of range causing an error. The error
can usually be determined by looking at the CHIRP debug.log file.

Re: [chirp_users] Python 3 port

2020-09-04 Thread Tony Fuller
Hi Greg,

I don't normally advocate for working on forks of code but I have seen at least
3 or 4 people now ask the same question so maybe we could get together on
github.com where we could send pull requests and work "locally" until the
mercurial repo is in better shape. Alex Page has a fork of chirp with some
baseline changes to the source files using the 2to3 conversion helper script
bundled with python3 at https://github.com/atpage/chirp

Also, there is a different mailing list, chirp_devel, where chirp development
is discussed.

Tony.
