[CentOS] Centos 5.1 installation problems -- couldn't find devices

2008-03-16 Thread Yu-Hui Jin
Hi, there,

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 530 with the following basic configuration:

Inspiron 530 Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.40Ghz 1066FSB) w/Quad Core
Technology and 8MB cache

SATA 0: Samsung HD501LJ(500GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive(7200RPM))
SATA 1: PDBS DVD +/- RW DH-16W1S (16X DVD+/-RW Drive)

I tried to install Centos 5.1 on it with dual boot (keep Windows XP
partition) and got stuck on some strange issues. I hope one of you could
shed some light on what I should do next. Here's the summary of my
installation attempts.

Attempt 1: I burned both an installation DVD (slow and verified) and
installation CD #1. I tried them both and both failed due to no driver
found. More specifically, at the step for "what type of media contains the
packages to be installed?", I chose "Local CDROM", the result screen said
"No driver found" and prompted me to Select driver from a list of drivers.
I randomly chose a few but none worked.

Attempt 2. I tried network installation. I chose "HTTP" when prompted for
the media. I then specified the
mirror.centos.orgas the
Web Site Name and
/centos/5/os/i386/ as the Red
Hat directory. It got the installation started successfully. However, at
the step for partitioning the disk, I was prompted to choose the partition
option and I checked the "review and modify partitioning layout". Also,
there's no drive shown in the "select the drive(s) to use for this
installation" panel. When i clicked Next, a "No drives Found" message
popped up, saying "an error has occurred -- no valid devices were found on
which to create new file systems. please check your hardware for the cause
of this problem."

It seemed both attempts failed due to the installation program couldn't find
either the SATA DVD drive or the SATA hard disk. However, it's hard to
believe Centos 5.1 installation couldn't recognize these two SATA devices.

I'm now stuck. Any suggestion or advice is much appreciated.

Re: [CentOS] Centos 5.1 installation problems -- couldn't find devices

2008-03-17 Thread Yu-Hui Jin
Thanks. Joseph, my box actually has Windows XP pre-installed (instead of
Vista).

So I'll check that option in my BIOS when I get back home, although I don't
recall I've seen one. I'll also send out an email to this list to ask if
someone else has solved similar problem.

Let me know if there's other mailing list I can ask.

Thanks,

-Hui

[CentOS] Intel SATA controller (cmiiw) not recognized by Centos 5.1 installation?

2008-03-17 Thread Yu-Hui Jin
Hi, there,

I tried to install Centos 5.1 on a Dell Inspiron 530 box I just bought, but
failed due to invalid drive. The installation did not recognize either the
DVD nor the hard disk. Joseph from the community said it is likely that
Centos can't recognize the controller -- Intel SATA controller (cmiiw).

Did anyone solve this problem before? How did you do it?

Here's the related configuration for my box:
Inspiron 530 Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.40Ghz 1066FSB) w/Quad Core
Technology and 8MB cache
SATA 0: Samsung HD501LJ(500GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive(7200RPM))
SATA 1: PDBS DVD +/- RW DH-16W1S (16X DVD+/-RW Drive)

Many thanks!

Re: [CentOS] Intel SATA controller (cmiiw) not recognized by Centos 5.1 installation?

2008-03-17 Thread Yu-Hui Jin
Hi, Jason,

Thanks and I tried the first method to start with the parameter, but it was
extremely slow loading each screen. one time I got to the testing media page
and i chose Test. and it seemed stuck there for ever so I forced shutdown my
box.

I also tried to download and install the AHCI driver following this article:

http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30865

But the installation failed; it said The computer does not meet the minimum
requirements for installing this software.

It seemed that no trick has worked yet... any new suggestion or advice?

Thanks,

-Hui

Re: [CentOS] Re: Intel SATA controller (cmiiw) not recognized by Centos 5.1 installation?

2008-03-18 Thread Yu-Hui Jin
I was told to try two methods:
1) linxu all-generic-ide
2) install ahci and config to use it in BIOS.

#1 is too slow; #2, I checked my BIOS, there's no ahci option. That's
why i'm following the article which tells how to install it for XP and get
it into BIOS.

Thanks! I tried network installation (using HTTP though), but the harddisk
can't be recognized during the partitioning step. It seems to me this NFS
network described in this article would have the same problem.

am I wrong in thinking this way? (i don't have a second linux to do the NFS
install so I'm suspicious about whether i should really give this a try.)

It seems installing AHCI is the only way to go to me

Re: [CentOS] Re: Intel SATA controller (cmiiw) not recognized by Centos 5.1 installation?

2008-03-19 Thread Yu-Hui Jin
Hi, guys,

I finally found I only need to choose the "RAID" option for SATA mode (the
other one is "IDE"). I didn't know by choosing it, Centos is able to load
the ahci driver. That solves the problem. It took ton of time for me to
figuring out the solution is such easy. I should've tried this earlier.

Thank you all for helping on this. Centos seems to have a great community.

-Hui
