[CentOS] CentOS user survey results
Over the past 3 or 4 months, we have been running a survey about how you use CentOS. Many thanks to those who participated in this, to help us better understand how we can give you what you need. I've written up the results of the survey here - https://blog.centos.org/2020/07/centos-community-user-survey/ While some of the results were expected - most of you use CentOS in small to medium shops, running services either for work or personal use - there were some eye-opening things in this. To me personally, the volunteerism question shows that a lot of you are looking for places to get involved, and that we haven't done a great job telling you where and how. We'll be working to fix that. For those of you who missed the survey, we intend to do this again, perhaps as often as twice a year, and also provide opportunities to give more feedback beyond the simple 5-minute questionnaire. Thank you all for participating, and for being part of our community. ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
[CentOS] https://blog.centos.org/2020/12/future-is-centos-stream/
The future of the CentOS Project is CentOS Stream, and over the next year we’ll be shifting focus from CentOS Linux, the rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), to CentOS Stream, which tracks just ahead of a current RHEL release. CentOS Linux 8, as a rebuild of RHEL 8, will end at the end of 2021. CentOS Stream continues after that date, serving as the upstream (development) branch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Meanwhile, we understand many of you are deeply invested in CentOS Linux 7, and we’ll continue to produce that version through the remainder of the RHEL 7 life cycle. https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata/#Life_Cycle_Dates CentOS Stream will also be the centerpiece of a major shift in collaboration among the CentOS Special Interest Groups (SIGs). This ensures SIGs are developing and testing against what becomes the next version of RHEL. This also provides SIGs a clear single goal, rather than having to build and test for two releases. It gives the CentOS contributor community a great deal of influence in the future of RHEL. And it removes confusion around what “CentOS” means in the Linux distribution ecosystem. When CentOS Linux 8 (the rebuild of RHEL8) ends, your best option will be to migrate to CentOS Stream 8, which is a small delta from CentOS Linux 8, and has regular updates like traditional CentOS Linux releases. If you are using CentOS Linux 8 in a production environment, and are concerned that CentOS Stream will not meet your needs, we encourage you to contact Red Hat about options. We have an FAQ - https://centos.org/distro-faq/ - to help with your information and planning needs, as you figure out how this shift of project focus might affect you. [CentOS] Code of Conduct
You may have seen, a few days ago, that the Fedora project announced[1] a new Code of Conduct for their community. What you may not have known is that the CentOS project was involved in the crafting of that Code, so that we could also use it here. Yeah, I know, this is something we should have done a long time ago. But, you know what they say about the best time to plant a tree. (The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is today.) As we continue to work to make all aspects of the CentOS Project more open and transparent, it is important that we create an open, welcoming community where all people, from all backgrounds, feel safe in their participation. This allows for a broader contributor pool, with more ideas and more community ownership of the resulting outcomes. And it's just the right thing to do. It is our intent to take the text of the Fedora CoC, and replace 'Fedora' with 'CentOS' everywhere, and propose it here. There will, of course, be other small changes to the text (Board vs Council, and so on) but not to the details of the Code itself, and how we intend to address reports. We're holding off on those edits so that our version doesn't drift from theirs, during their 2 week comment period. (Ends April 26th.) The document is derived from the Contributor Covenant, along with work that has been ongoing in the Fedora project for some time. Note also that the Contributor Covenant is also the source material for the CoC used by the Linux kernel project.[2] To that end, we encourage you to engage in the discussion around the Fedora CoC, because any changes made there will influence what we end up with here. And we also encourage discussion on centos-devel[3], for anything that you feel is specific to our community. --Rich, on behalf of the CentOS Board of Directors [1] https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/policy-proposal-new-code-of-conduct/ [2] https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=8a104f8b5867c682d994ffa7a74093c54469c11f [3] https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-devel ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

The various ops have discussed the situation, and we intend to migrate all of the various #centos-* channels from Freenode over to irc.libera.chat over the coming days. This will take time, since libera is still spinning up, and some servers are moving from one network to the other. As libera is still in the early stages of setup, you may have significantly more timeouts/disconnects, netsplits and other issues for now. [CentOS] CentOS Community Code of Conduct
As per my email in April - https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2021-April/076769.html - and per the approval of the Board of Directors, we have published the new CentOS Community Code of Conduct: https://www.centos.org/code-of-conduct/ This Code of Conduct is in effect immediately, and the reporting process described in there is in effect immediately. One note: The doc says that it is "a living document and will be updated when and if it is deemed necessary." One change that we forsee very soon is that, rather than me, as Community Architect, being the sole responsible party for reporting CoC incidents, I will be assembling a small CoC committee. While I have identified some of the people who will be part of that committee, I thought it was good to go ahead and publish the CoC as is, and modify it once that committee is all in place. [CentOS] CentOS events for 2018/2019
TL;DR: What events should we go to? Tell me at https://goo.gl/forms/kLZ2y1H1jRSy4NdC3 (Cross-posting from promo@ mailing list, to get a wider participation. Thanks!) Looking at the coming 12 months, I need some feedback as I select events that need to have a CentOS presence of some kind. While I have already committed to some of these events (See below), starting around July we haven't really signed on for much, and I would like to hear from the community what events you feel we should be at, and why. The why is, by far, the more important half of the question. Why, as in, what story do we want to tell there; who are we trying to tell that story to; what would be a positive outcome from being there. First, here are the events that I am already committed to: May 8-10: Red Hat Summit - https://www.redhat.com/en/summit/2018 June 25-28: ISC-HPC (SuperComputing) Frankfurt - https://www.isc-hpc.com/ October 1-3: cPanel, Houston - https://conference.cpanel.com/ November 12-15: SuperComputing 18, Dallas - https://sc18.supercomputing.org/ February 2-3 (assumed): FOSDEM, Brussels - http://fosdem.org The story at Red Hat Summit is that CentOS (and, specifically, our SIGs) is the platform for innovation, and the source of all of Red Hat's products, as well as projects and products that continue to invent the industry. The story at the SuperComputing events is what I have been tweeting "SuperComputing is #PoweredByCentOS" - which is incontrovertibly true. The top 500 supercomputers in the world are overwhelmingly CentOS. We attend cPanel because the web hosting business, and in particular cPanel-backed sites, are overwhelmingly running on CentOS. FOSDEM - because it's FOSDEM. Events where we could have a presence are, of course, legion. We can continue to do the events that we did last year, and the year before, and that would be fine. Or we can try to visit some other industry segment where we'd like to shine brighter. I've made a Google Form at https://goo.gl/forms/kLZ2y1H1jRSy4NdC3 listing the events that I'm currently considering, but also providing space for you to tell me what events I'm not thinking about yet. Finally, please note that I'm not just talking about me going to stuff, but, rather, identifying the right people that should be at these events, and sending them to represent us - CentOS Ambassadors, if you will. -- Rich Bowen - rbo...@redhat.com @RDOcommunity // @CentOSProject // @rbowen ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Re: [CentOS] Is decoupling Apache + PHP into separate nodes possible?
On 07/26/2018 04:48 PM, Arun Khan wrote: I have deployed Linux/Apache/PHP (node1) + MySQL (node2) with Security Groups (AWS) or iptables controlling who can connect to the MySQL server. To the best of my knowledge Apache + PHP (mod_php) have to be in the same node. With PHP-FPM it is conceivable to have Apache talk to PHP-FPM running on a separate node (see diagram https://goo.gl/xTfbjg). But I have not done it myself and I am not sure if it is feasible. With my Apache httpd documentation hat on ... Yes, and this is the recommended way to do it (ie, php-fpm vs mod_php). FPM lets you run the Event MPM with confidence, and that's what you *should* be running. Whereas with mod_php, we still recommend prefork, due to threading issues, and prefork sucks. If it is feasible then what's the best practice to distribute the *.html *.css and *.php files between the Apache + the PHP-FPM nodes and how to achieve load balance between Apache and PHP-FPM nodes. I have searched but not found any reference setups. Would appreciate suggestions / references from anyone who has done a 3 Tier Apache + PHP + MySQL deployment in production. We (the httpd docs team) recommend *.php on the php node, and everything else on the httpd node. Configure as shown here: https://wiki.apache.org/httpd/PHP-FPM This is how I run all my websites, although I only do one httpd and one fpm, because my websites aren't exactly high traffic. For balancing, I guess you can use mod_proxy_balancer to balance between multiple fpm nodes: https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_proxy_balancer.html -- Rich Bowen - rbo...@redhat.com @CentOSProject // @rbowen 859 351 9166 ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] CentOS 8 Artwork needed
To all the artists and designers here, we need your help. With RHEL 8 beta released, we need to start producing artwork for CentOS 8. It's time for the CentOS Artwork SIG, and anyone else that's interested in contributing to this effort, to start working on everything that will be needed for the new release. What we know we need is anaconda artwork, and new desktop backgrounds to replace the current '7' themed stuff. As we dig, we may find more things that need to be updated to the new 8 theme. Additionally, we will need to update some of the assets listed here: https://wiki.centos.org/ArtWork/Identity ... and produce new assets for 8 to be listed here: https://wiki.centos.org/ArtWork/Brand/Logo And, finally, we need someone to step up to lead this effort. [CentOS] CentOS, Red Hat, and IBM
CentOS community, Today marks a new day in the 26-year history of Red Hat. IBM has finalized its acquisition of Red Hat (https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/ibm-closes-landmark-acquisition-red-hat-34-billion-defines-open-hybrid-cloud-future) which will operate as a distinct unit within IBM moving forward. What does this mean for Red Hat’s contributions to the CentOS project? In short, nothing. Red Hat always has and will continue to be a champion for open source and projects like CentOS. IBM is committed to Red Hat’s independence and role in open source software communities so that we can continue this work without interruption or changes. Our mission, governance, and objectives remain the same. We will continue to execute the existing project roadmap. Red Hat associates will continue to contribute to the upstream in the same ways they have been. And, as always, we will continue to help upstream projects be successful and contribute to welcoming new members and maintaining the project. We will do this together, with the community, as we always have. If you have questions or would like to learn more about today’s news, I encourage you to review the list of materials below. Red Hat CTO Chris Wright will host an online Q&A session in the coming days where you can ask questions you may have about what the acquisition means for Red Hat and our involvement in open source communities. Hi, folks, I would like to (slightly) expand our number of CentOS Dojos in 2020. (If you're not familiar with the concept of Dojos, please read https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/ and perhaps attend our event in Brussels in January! https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/Brussels2020 ) For 2020, we have tentatively 3 planned: * FOSDEM Dojo (Jan 31) * Oak Ridge National Labs (September) * CERN (October, I think) Dojos are typically held one of three places: * Colocated with an existing tech event (like the FOSDEM event) * At a business, or research org, like ORNL/CERN * At a University, targeted at students (We have done events at Univ Cincinnati, Univ Kentucky, Boston University, and are hoping to do something at UTenn in 2020) If you are interested in hosting a Dojo, please get in touch with me. I can offer some budget, planning logistics, promotion, and help finding speakers. What I'm looking for from you is a venue, local contacts for help getting stuff done, and possibly someone to act as an MC for those events that I am unable to attend in person. -- Rich Bowen - rbo...@redhat.com @CentOSProject // @rbowen 859 351 9166 ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
