[CentOS] sofware caused connection abort

2008-03-29 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

some of my users use putty to connect to my server via ssh protocol.
After some time they get the above error message, and it could be that
my CentOS-side configuration caused this. Do anybody has experience
with this problem?

They connect via the internet, could it make a difference? And, how
can I check if ICMP is blocked?

Now I have made a test from Unix machines using ssh (the program), I
did not experience the same problem so it might be with putty and/or
with company firewall/user's ISP.

[CentOS] mac address in prompt

2008-06-10 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

for some reasons bash writes out my host's mac address as a result of
including \h in PS1. Do you know why? This was not always so.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ echo $PS1

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ hostname -f
hostname: Unknown host

After this I set hostname with the similarly-named command and now it
works, thanks for the tip.

[CentOS] exam

2008-06-16 Thread Gergely Buday
Dear CentOS users,

is it possible to prepare for a certified (big North American Linux
vendor) engineer exam with a CentOS install ?

I have heard that the test contains questions on specific GUIs, are
they included in the CentOS distribution?

[CentOS] backup question

2008-06-22 Thread Gergely Buday
Dear CentOs users,

I have a centos server with nothing important at the moment, but I
would like to install some web-based project management tool (trac for
the curious) that would contain important data. And, as my network is
growing the configuration of the server is becoming complex. I would
like to have a proper backup so that I can restore the whole system
easily, should any problem occur. What do you recommend?

I'm not an expert on this, so my first idea is that I could do a per
application backup and create a tar file of the /etc. The latter
especially could be too naive. And, a push-the-button method that
handles all in once, not depending on the app number would be much
better.

Another thing: how I could do this to be safe across a centos upgrade?

[CentOS] command line configuration of DSL access

2008-07-11 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

how can I configure a DSL access using the command line? The Red Hat

could not find any description on the internet.

The case is that I used the GUI for my fedora box and now would like
to set the same to my centos server that would be the firewall. I use
eth0 to connect to my service provider's network. When I set up on
fedora I choose DSL and gave login name and password and worked out of
the box. I use CentOs 5.1 on my server.

I would like to use an editor better than the GUI to configure this.
My provider is Digi Tv in Hungary.

I wonder why do you need all this, isn't there a good description of
the config scripts somewhere?

[CentOS] ps/2 mouse stopped working

2014-11-15 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

I was using a ps/2 mouse.

I had to connect a ps/2 keyboard. As I have only one ps/2 socket I
connected an usb mouse.

I then removed the other keyboard and reconnected the ps/2 mouse and
removed the usb mouse.

Now the ps/2 mouse does not work, even after reboot. What should I do?

I reconnected the other keyboard and I write this e-mail from it so
this did not happen. Thanks for the advice though.

[CentOS] build system for cutting edge software

2014-05-18 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi,

I use centos as it is stable and provides all the software that is
needed for everyday use.

However, sometimes I would like to use fresh software that is not
available as a package. Compiling from source is indeed an option but
because centos uses oldish sources not only the sought package should
be built but a lot of other packages.

An idea is to build it in a directory, as much independent as it is
possible from the installed libraries on the centos installation. Is
there an automated build system for such an endeavour?

Thanks, software collections seem to be the thing I imagined. No
wonder that somebody has already done it.

[CentOS] Opera is slow on CentOS

2014-07-16 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

I am running various browsers on my CentOS 6.5. Firefox is running
smoothly, especially with blocking flash animations. I recently
installed Opera and I use Seamonkey for long, both suffers from being
very slow. Does CentOS have any role in this? For your information I
send cpuinfo, some people on #centos said that this could be the
problem -- but then why Firefox flies?

[CentOS] installing Desktop faster

2014-09-06 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

I installed centos 7 -- it works great.

What made me think is that installation took 1300 packages for a Desktop
with some add-ons.

As usual, there might be a solution for this already but I do not know it.
Would it be possible to create one big package for a standard Desktop? Then
an installation would not take ages.

[CentOS] xelatex does not work on centos 7

2014-09-10 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

I tried to compile some trivial LaTeX file with the shipped XeLaTeX:

$ xelatex trivial.tex
This is XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-0..3 (TeX Live 2013)
 restricted \write18 enabled.

kpathsea: Running mktexfmt xelatex.fmt
/usr/bin/mktexfmt: line 395:
/usr/share/texlive/texmf/texconfig/tcfmgr: No such file or directory
fmtutil: config file `fmtutil.cnf' not found.
I can't find the format file `xelatex.fmt'!
$ rpm -q texlive-xetex
texlive-xetex-svn26330.0.9997.5-32.el7.noarch
$ cat trivial.tex
\documentclass{article}

\title{Hello World!}

\begin{document}

\end{document}

This seems to be broken. How can I fix it?

[CentOS] Monospace font in GNOME Classic and in Cinnamon -- CentOS 7

2014-09-10 Thread Gergely Buday
Hi there,

I liked the terminal font in GNOME Classic but I want to switch to Cinnamon.

fc-match said in GNOME that the Monospace font is Dejavu Sans Mono
Book. I set that in Cinnamon but that appears quite different.

How can I use the same terminal font in Cinnamon? How can I figure
this out digging through font configuration files?
