Google shows me a number of responses that all tell me to add a line 
to /etc/sysconfig/network

which I already had.

So what am I missing?

Thanks to those that responded.
Turns out that having defroute=no is the problem - really helps to 
actually read what is in the ifcfg-eth0 file.


On a side note - the various ADSL broadband routers supplied by the NZ 
telcos all seem to have missing or broken bits - the vodafone one 
doesn't open the firewall properly for incoming http - the telecom 
device allows one to specify a different IP address for the router but 
not the gw address - thus it only works if you use their default IP/gw 
address. So many hours wasted.
BTW - all other devices are working just fine - just my main CentOS 
6.5 WS fails.

[CentOS] odd issue with ipmitool

Got an older server running 6.5. I've been fighting it - I have two
webcams for surveillance of the room; one works with motion, but it
resizes the picture down
Adjusting resolution from 640x480 to 360x296
and the video's dark and bad contrast. So I went back to the camer I'd
been using before that worked fine... on CentOS 5.x, and then I remembered
why I'd gone to the other camera - the bottom 40% of so of the screen is
green - no picture, just green.

Doing a *lot* of googling, I saw references to this, and a number of folks
suggesting problems with USB messages. Now, I've tried plugging it in both
front and back of the server, given the possibility that there was a
difference in versions of USB support, but no joy.

So this morning, I started wondering if there was something going on,
hardware-wise, on the box. Installed OpenIPMI and ipmitools, fired it up,
and tried to do a simple ipmitool sel list... and get "unspecified error".
Ok, I said to myself, I tried ipmitool sel 1, ditto... but 2 gives me
Get SDR 0003 command failed: Unspecified error
Get SDR 0005 command failed: Unspecified error
Get SDR 0009 command failed: Unspecified error
Get SDR 0014 command failed: Unspecified error
Get SDR 0017 command failed: Unspecified error
and then a record. I tried jumping around - 200 (which I've seen as the
limit on other machines), nothing, 150, yes, 156 or so, yes. Not some
lower numbers.

So, now the question is whether something screwy is going on with the
hardware... or if just, for some reason, the SEL is screwed up. Note that
ipmitool sdr list works fine

I too am studying for the RHCSA.and while it IS tough (SO different 
from when I had to study for Windows 2000 Server Administration certs!) 
I wonder if the fact that Red Hat is about to release version 7 if the 
6.x exams are still going to be valid?...and if so..for how much longer?

some general comments...

15.6" screen with 1366x768?  *w*.  that resolution belongs on a 
13" screen, a 15" screen should be significantly higher, maybe even 
1920x1024 (such as my wife's XPS15)

15.6" is a big laptop, rather unweildy for carrying anywhere.   8.5 lbs 
is *heavy*, too.

I agree the screen resolution sucks - my current circa 2006 is 1280x800 - as 
far as the weight I generally never
carry it anywhere - usually use it in my easy chair. I am looking specifically 
for more speed than my core 2 duo has.

[CentOS] NetworkManger trying to start Supplicant

In Centos 6.5, I am getting the message in the log file every few minutes:

NetworkManager:  Trying to start the supplicant...

There is no wireless on that computer, but there are two NICs, 
because it is my home gateway.  Is there some tweak that can prevent 
this message?

The installation is a relatively new one, so all packages are "up-to-date".

service NetworkManager stop
chkconfig NetworkManager off

chkconfig network --list

If that's on, you should be fine. I still think there's no excuse for
NetworkManager on a wired system

It will probably be the same elsewhere, because they are CHEAP. I've used a
few NZ Telco supplied routers over the years and a couple of cheap bought
ones. All had some issue or the other. Nowadays I put up with or workaround
any issues.

These restrictions were always inherited. Theoretically if you use 
cryptographic software developed in USA you are "bound" to these rules.
In many cases if you use for example OpenSSL in Windows, Ubuntu, 
Android etc etc you are still affected (I think), it's just that now 
it's written somewhere.
In practice this is not very relevant and also pretty unenforceable; 
not to mention that - to my understanding - it contradicts the GPL.
RH needs to specify this legal bit so uncle Sam is happy. Just do 
whatever everyone else does, ignore it.

As RHEL 7 is soon to be released you should take exam soon or take exam
with RHEL 7

If I recall this was about a CentOS mirror in Iran and the new export
restrictions prohibit that.

There are no *new* export restrictions.  You're just now aware of them.
It's the US gubmint that puts those restrictions, not RedHat, and they've
always applied to CentOS.

I say "new" because the original email referred to what I believe was
about an existing CentOS mirror in Iran. This prompted me to look at the
CentOS website and I found the export restrictions to which the email
was referring. Then I looked at the Fedora project website and found the
same restrictions. I don't know much about open source export
restrictions. I know they must exist for proprietary software developed
in the United States. I was merely pointing out what the the email
stating and what it was referring to. Please retract the word new.

That's the point though.  If "you" (for generic values of "you") export
code under US legal restriction from the US then you're in breach of
US regulations.  Whether you know about it or not.

Fun, huh?

If "you" run a mirror then you get to determine your legal risk and
whether you should keep the mirror.  The CentOS team are not lawyers;
they can't tell you.

It's a fun legal question as to who does the export; the person
making available for export on a web site or the person downloading
from that website.  As far as I know it's not really settled.  In
my opinion the RedHat wording is a prayer hoping that'll cover them :-)
But I'm not a lawyer, either!

If you're really concerned then consult a lawyer.

(This actually applies to _any_ downloader, not just people who mirror).

Jangs book is really thorough, but if you ask me, it's too big.
I studied for approx. 5 weekends and never made it half way through the
book, due to it being so long and covering way to much. Eg. it covers
sendmail and postfix setup, while postfix is the default. Red Hat's course
only covers postfix.
I took the RH300 rapid course, where there is 4 days classroom training and
1 day exam with both RHCSA and RHCE.
I took the course with out ever setting up an email server or ftp server
before, so it is possible to get through it without knowning everything. I
actually learned a few things on the RHCSA I could use an hour later in the
RHCE exam :)

I scored 300 on RHCSA and 260 on RHCE.
