[CentOS] placing x11 libraries in an alternate location

2012-09-16 Thread Rita
we have close to 50 servers. I would like to have X11 libraries (and
devel). Instead of installing them one by one on all servers, I would like
to have them in a central NFS location and have my app pick them up like
that. Is it possible to do this with yum/rpm ?

Re: [CentOS] where should we go to know how to build Diskless X server running in 6.2?

2012-09-16 Thread SilverTip257
I too would suggest PXE booting the Live CD (I've done it with other
distros) - which brings me to the following questions regarding
CentOS.

RHEL write up [9] - also you might look at the Fedora docs below.

*** To anyone else who may know: ***

I found [0] and [7], but I'm curious if there is _any other method_.

Bits of Fedora discussion [1] [2] [3]
Fedora Docs [8] - basically copy files from a running system
Fedora dracut-network [4]
Amahi netboot [5]
Diskless (MythTV related, but applicable) [6]

I've used an unmodified ISO by loading it into memory via memdisk and
while that works ok it requires plenty of memory for the image. (But
it does not require any alteration done to the squashfs image.)

I've netbooted live Debian (and variants) off an NFS export (my
reading shows HTTP and FTP are an option too). I didn't succeed
pulling Fedora or CentOS images from NFS though.

Just curious.
(It would really rock if it was possible to load the squashfs over NFS
or HTTP rather than TFTP.)

[CentOS] flash plugin

2012-09-16 Thread Michael Hennebry

How do I get a flash plugin to work with firefox?
I thought that I installed it correctly,
but I have yet to see any flash videos through firefox.

I keep being told that I need an additional plugin.
When I folow directions, I'm told I already have it?
At least once, I was told I needed to upgrade.

In case it helps, here is the output of
yum provides '*flash*' | grep -e lash -e dobe -e repo /tmp/flash.txt | grep -v
-e /src/ -e .png -e share | tee /tmp/flash.txt

I had similar problems on Centos 5.8 32 bit. U had to
downgrade to:

[root@karsites ~]# rpm -qv flash-plugin
flash-plugin-10.3.183.19-0.1.el5.rf

to get it to work again.

Security patches are being backported for now, IIRC.

Re: [CentOS] flash plugin

2012-09-16 Thread Rob Townley
iirc, Firefox will block flash from working when it knows the plugin
is vulnerable.
flashtester.org works today, but not last week and maybe even the week before.
i have seen this behavior a few times after major security flaws are
known to be exploited.
i don't think i did anything to fix it except apply updates and reboot.

Have you rerembered to make sure no firefox process or any flash
process is running?

$ rpm -qv firefox flash-plugin
firefox-10.0.7-1.el6.centos.x86_64
flash-plugin-11.2.202.238-release.x86_64

FlashTester.org succeeds but javatester.org fails, so ...
Tools --> AddOns --> Plugins --> "Check to see if your plugins are up to date"
which brings one to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
"Missing Java? For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated
version of Java. Please upgrade to the latest version."

Assuming I install it correctly this time, do I need to restart firefox?
I often have rather a lot of tabs open and there
doesn't seem to be any tidy way to save them.

[CentOS] DRM EDID Error

2012-09-16 Thread Eugene Poole
I'm running the following hardware:

MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard
With a AMI v1.7 BIOS
AMD Phenom II X6 (1055T)
8 GB RAM (2 x 4 GB DIMM)
nVidia Geforce 7300 (G72) video Card
ViewSonic VA2431wvm monitor
Plus

The OS is:

CentOS release 6.3 (Final)
2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.centos.plus.x86_64

Actually, on this machine I'm getting the following error during bootup:

[drm:drm_edid_block_valid} *ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid,
remainder is (222; 122; 251; but mostly 128)

From time to time the video locks up and sometimes goes black. But the
keyboard and mouse usage can be seen via lights blinking whei I enter
something on the keyboard. And I can see what I entered when the
display returns.

I know the monitor, keyboard, and mouse are not the problem because I
have 3 machines on a KVM using the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
Could this be my video card going bad? I read another posting where it
was suggested to add 'Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"' into the xorg.conf, but
this machine doesn't have a xorg.conf file.

Any information will be helpful.

It doesn't let you save them anymore.
If you want that ability, you have to set it to startup with the previous
session's tabs... in the same section of preferences where the home page is
set, if I recall correctly.

i.e. If that's actually part of what you were asking.
