Anything is possible, but with the very good 3rd party repositories of
EPEL, ELRepo, and RepoForge available and accepting user packages from
the community, those would be a better bet. When we developed the
concept of contrib, those repositories did not exist or had very limited
support for Enterprise Linux.

Items added to CentOS would likely need to be things that are major
upstream offerings, like RHEV, JBoss, etc. ... and not individual
packages (again, the other 3rd Party repos are great for those).

If we were going to distribute items from a contributor, that person
would first need to gain the trust of the CentOS Project and would not
happen overnight. Members of the QA Team, forum moderators, documention
maintainers, etc., who have interfaced with the team for a period of
time would have a much better chance of getting our attention than
someone we are not familiar with.

The same engine that renders for games works very well rendering for CG
animation for movies, and nVidia's Tesla and other CUDA GPU's pretty much own
this space.

A single Tesla can outperform a dozen general-purpose compute nodes in
production rendering workloads. Note that the Tesla cards don't even have a

[CentOS] Dependency issues when running yum update

Hi All,

Am getting this:

---> Package xulrunner.i686 0:1.9.2.26-2.el6.centos will be updated

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Running the --skip-broken gets me updated but the problem is still
there. Would anyone have an idea as to how to fix this, please?

Not trying to be a smart aleck here, but the problem isn't with CentOS, but
with a third-party package; you may want to ask on an RPMforge list about an
update to gxine, which is not a CentOS package, but an RPMforge package. More
than likely, with the historically great responsiveness of the RPMforge
maintainers (especially Dag) this will be fixed shortly, since the same thing
will impact any EL6 rebuild and upstream EL6 itself. So try again later, or
run the update with --disablerepo=rpmforge

[CentOS] File permissions

2012-03-10 Thread Robert Spangler
Hello,

I need to know if there is something I am missing about file permission as I
believe I am seeing some strange stuff on my system. I have a directory as
follows:

drwxrwxrwx 7 root root 4096 Mar 10 13:35 temp

In this directory I have a file:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 137 Oct 30 02:16 208-109-248-33test

As a normal user should I be able to rename this file? I believe that only
root should be able to modify this file but as a normal user I am able to
rename it without elevated privileges as so:

temp $ mv 208-109-248-33test 208-109-248-33-mv

[Sat Mar 10 13:41:05] /temp

temp $ lt 208*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 137 Oct 30 02:16 208-109-248-33-mv

How is this possible? If it is possible what am I missing or not
understanding? Thnx.

You have write permissions to the directory; renaming a file needs write on the
directory, not on the file.

As Mr Owen remarks, nothing is broken. To get the mode ("permissions")
semantics that you might be expecting, set the "sticky bit" of the
directory.

 # chmod +t temp

Then the mode will appear as "drwxrwxrwt" ( 1777 in octal).

Notice that this is the same as the mode for /tmp.

"In Unix, everything is a file." Directories are files, too.

Lamar Owen nailed it in his post: renaming a file means updating its
directory entry and hence requires write permission on the directory, not
the file - which you have as a result of the "other" permissions on the
directory:

drwxrwxrwx 7 root root 4096 Mar 10 13:35 temp

If you want the full story, I have an article on my web site (part of a
magazine series I wrote, years ago) which explains permissions in detail:

Hi

Have you configured Priorities?
I've mainly found these sorts of issues to be related with priorities
not configured - may not be your case, but I would double check anyway.

In this specific case, and while this isn't the RPMforge list, but, anyway, it
appears that the update of xulrunner (associated with the new Firefox, I
believe) no longer provides some specific library that the rpmforge gxine
package depends upon, and thus yum couldn't do the upgrade of xulrunner because
the new package doesn't seem to provide that dependency any more. I of course
reserve the right to be wrong.

It's not something that can be fixed by CentOS, it will have to be fixed by
rpmforge, as that gxine package will have to be upgraded to use something else
that provides libmozjs.so. (that's where the 'Not found' under the xulrunner
10.0.1 package comes from).

First, you should check the various RPM repos to see if they host your
module. It's (often) better to use a packaged version than to grab from
CPAN. This is doubly true if the module is available from one of the
official CentOS repositories.

> how to remedy this problem
> cpan modules installed in /usr/lib/perl/

If you run cpan (note case) as root, it should install to the correct
places (assuming you trust CPAN). If you run CPAN as a normal user it
generally won't be able to install to the system directories. (I think
there's an option for this now, actually, so you could run everything up
to "make install" as a normal user.)

If that still doesn't work, move root's .cpan directory somewhere else
(e.g., mv ~/.cpan ~/cpan-backup) and re-run cpan from scratch.

Actually it hit me too. 2 guests on the same hosts went unresponsive.
The kernel on the host was not updated but kvm and kmod-kvm was.
I try with downgraded kvm and kmod-kvm on the host and downgraded kernel
