[CentOS] Are SSD disks worth the cost for server usage?
Hi, we want to upgrade our infrastructure and are considering renting two different types of server by a provider: - A: one is with 80 GB SSD (and 12 GB memory) http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_ssd.xml - B: the other with 750 GB SATA2 (and 8 GB memory). http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_best_of.xml The target infrastructure will host: - a few public web sites (PHP / MySQL) - a development infrastructure (subversion, bugzilla, automated builds) This will use KVM virtualization with Cent OS 5.4 hosts and guests. On the long run we will probably rent quite a few of type B depending on our needs of space and computing power. My question is whether it is worth using one of type A (with SSD drives) in order to host the critical data such as the web sites and the subversion repository (critical in the sense that these services should be fast, always available, and the related data as safe as possible). This critical server will be more read oriented than write. We will probably use a hardware RAID 1 with battery backed unit on it. My understanding is that SSD are much much faster. Is it really true in the real world? Are SSD drives also safer? (that is, less likely to crash under load) Or to the contrary? I have read/heard conflicting opinions so far and I'll be happy to hear opinions/experiences on SSD drives in a server settings from people on the list. More general comments about our plans are always welcome of course! Cheers, Mathieu PS: we will actually rent them in France, but I put links to the equivalent in Britain in order to have the description in English. For reference and for the French-speaking people, here are the actual servers we consider: http://www.ovh.com/fr/produits/eg_ssd.xml http://www.ovh.com/fr/produits/eg_best_of.xml (they are exactly the same) ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Perhaps it's because of the way I'm trying to > use it (or I don't get it). Does each VM that is using a specific bridged > device need to have the same IP subnet as that of the static brX address? No. But you have to tell via config (I don't know how KVM does this) which bridge the VM is going to use. And if you want it to be reachable via two bridges you have to set it up for two bridges and give it two IP numbers. And the packet then has to come in thru the correct interface/bridge, there is no "bridging" between the bridges. You would need to set up some additional routing to work around this (probably, I'm not a routing expert). Is that possibly not the case? e.g. your VMs are still setup to use only one bridge? [CentOS] Strange problem updating machine
Hi Today I updated one machine with CentOS-5.4 (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5) x86_64 (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5450 @ 3.00GHz) to "2.6.18-164.10.1.el5", but in some places, like /boot[1] and in the menu /boot/grub/menu.lst[2], appeared as 2.6.18-164.1.10 - the "1" and the "10" swapped. Did anybody else had similar problems? The update worked fine in i686 workstation and x86_64 xen kernels. The real question is how many hits/hour you expect. I interviewed last year at a major advertiser... but (and I'm trying to remember from last May) they were getting hundreds of millions of hits per day. For tens or hundreds of thousands, the normal drives are more than fine. That, of course, also depends on the sites: in early '03, I looked at a small site, and the guy's web pages took *forever* to load... but that was because he'd taken photos of his work, and each page had something like four or six photos, each of which was 1.5M-4M. > My understanding is that SSD are much much faster. > Is it really true in the real world? > > Are SSD drives also safer? > (that is, less likely to crash under load) > Or to the contrary? The enterprise grade ones. And, if they're not enterprise grade, and the provider's cheaping out and using the kind sold in stores, they're not as reliable. If it is mod_dav_svn, just make sure that Apache httpd is started automatically: sudo /sbin/chkconfig httpd on (or via System > Administration > Services if you have the UI). I never used seriously the the standalone svnserve, but I guess you would have to start it explicitly either by: - adding the command in /etc/rc.local (called by each reboot, but may be not so clean?) - write your own script under /etc/init.d I would definitely suggest to use it as an httpd module (much easier and flexible). It requires a little Apache config though: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.5/svn.serverconfig.httpd.html (note that this link is for SVN 1.5, but the config is the same for SVN 1.4, which is the one provided by CentOS base) ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

With the failing drive still in the array performance tanked. I've never used SATA on cciss, that could be a cause of issues. Used several hundred 3ware controllers too, only a few issues. My own opinion is I use proper storage arrays for storage, and only use server-based controllers for the OS and basic stuff. And for my VMware systems they are all boot from SAN. Will be trying boot from SAN on CentOS 5.4 again soon, it didn't work properly on 5.2. Go with 10/15k RPM SAS, not Intel SSD or SATA if you want best availability. Intel SSDs have had firmware issues since they came out, I doubt we've seen the end of firmware changes on them. You can provision machines We don't have extremely high load requirements. This is first and foremost a development infrastructure with a public part for our free software products. So we don't expect very high volume on it in the foreseeable future. Our idea is more that we are ready to invest a bit more in the hardware to be on the safe side. We have been running our infrastructure for the last three years on a cheap server with 1GB memory and on a Linux so old that I cannot even tell here for security reasons (and a bit shame as well probably...) We had one single crash during the three years (probably because I kept everything very simple) and it is only for a few months that we start feeling that the development of our activity requires something bigger. I would also say that it is more important for us to have control over the whole stack than to have optimal performance. And this whole stack has to be free software (which excludes VMware I guess). I had a x4540 with 48 1TB drives and tried to recreate the raidz2 setup that I had tested with Solaris/zfs. I created six 6-disk RAID6 md devices, then added them into a single volume group and created a huge (5TB) logical volume with an XFS filesystem. I tried use one disk from each controller in each md device (as indicated by the hdtool that sun provides). I ran a variety of tests using tools like dd, iozone, tiobench, and sysbench and just watched how the server behaved. From what I could tell, the IO wasn't evenly spread across the disks in the md devices, just a subset. I probably could've tweaked it some more, but I didn't have too much time to spend on it at the time. The Sun Storage 7000 series servers were a better fit for that project anyway. [CentOS] kickstart %pre help on C5.4
Hey folks! I'm doing some %pre work for the first time in a very long time, and have been at this all day so far and still don't have anything sorted out properly. First I tried just doing some simple bash stuff like this %pre #!/bin/bash # stuff I reduced "stuff" down to basically a simple "select" statement to echo and read input, just for the sake of debugging. My first problem is that when running the kickstart, the little box would come up saying it is running the pre scripts, but my scripts would never actually run. No output, no prompts, nothing. So after some muddling I tried this : %pre #!/bin/bash exec 1>&3 exec > /dev/tty chvt 3 exec < /dev/tty3 > /dev/tty3 clear # stuff I cannot say I really understand this - it is just something I came across. in any case, now my script seems to run fine, but after it finishes it does not appear to go back to my install. I get messages like : date INFO all kickstart %%pre script(s) have been run date WARNING resolution and depth not specified, try to be sane and that is it - it stops there. I've also tried just : %pre #!/bin/bash chvt 3 clear # stuff With the same results as above. This is all running within VMWare ESXi 4.0 if that matters. What am I missing here? thanks, -Alan -- “Don't eat anything you've ever seen advertised on TV” - Michael Pollan, author of "In Defense of Food" ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Sounds like it is mis configured, doing some searches I found several references to the "/sbin/pp_hds_modular" command, which you may need, in this situation it's best to deal with your vendor support they should have instructions for supported MPIO configurations(whether or not linux device mapper is supported I don't know). Also double/triple check that your array is truely active-active, from what I recall you had a really old HDS system, I don't recall many of them being active-active(in the sense that you can access the same volume over multiple controllers simultaneously vs having different volumes exported over different controllers). For modular active-active I was in a presentation last year by HDS for their new AMS2k line up and they claimed that was the first modular active-active array(at least from them), others have had modular active-active for a few years now, they tried to claim they were the first despite that not being true. http://www.hds.com/products/storage-systems/adaptable-modular-storage-2000-family/index.html For me if I yank a cable within a couple seconds the system recovers, my vendor provides extremely specific step-by-step instructions for configuring, including modifications to the multipath init script for proper operation(7 pages in a PDF just for MPIO configuration and examples). nate ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Hi, I have changed directory ownership permissions recursively such that it is owned by username:groupname , where groupname is not the default group, i.e., username. However, when a user creates a new file the default permissions are again username:username. How can I give ownership permissions on a particular directory so that any files created in that directory will always have specifc username:groupname permissions? [CentOS] Trip to FOSDEM from London
Hello We are organizing a trip to Brussels for Fosdem in February starting from London. FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Development European Meeting) is a European event centered around Free and Open Source software development. It is aimed at developers and all interested in the Free and Open Source news in the world. Its goals are to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open source software. It is said to be the biggest gathering of Open Source interested people in Europe and the speaker list is quite impressive. We will be leaving London on Friday (5. Feb) evening and returning on Sunday (7. Feb). One of our goals is it to keep the total cost for the weekend under 200 Pounds, which is quite cheep for a weekend in Brussels. People who are interested can look at the wiki [1] or drop me a mail. Everyone is welcome. [CentOS] offtopic repo's further discussion
Hello All I may have ruffled some feathers with a comment i made earlier about rpmforge. This was posted back on the ML. On Tue, 2010-01-12 at 14:47 -0600, lostson wrote: > For one stop using rpmforge this repo does nothing but trash a system. Discussion on that for us? So to oblige here is a further discussion on this subject. The reason I say this about rpmforge is because if you install this repo and then do a yum update watch what it will install a huge amount of packages, which 9 times out of 10 is gonna get messy.(which can happen with any repo) And yes I know all about yum-pritorities another plugin that you can install to control the various repo's that one would like to add. I have no problems with this either. Here is my issue the simple joy of playing a mp3 on rhythmbox or amarok should not be a test of one's admin skills or repo knowledge to get it to play. But it is, it is always "here read these 2 pages about yum-priorities plugin and repo's" I mean cmon really? There are 2 repo's CentOS Extras and CentOS Plus could this functionality be placed in here ? Where is the repo I read about months ago that was gonna be available for users to submit packages to ? These are all questions that should be getting asked. Another point to make is on the list forums and other places we are seeing a influx of new users, coming from all sorts of other distro's and to make this simple instance so damn hard and having to pull from outside sources or repo's seems silly to me. Should CentOS not provide a simple and easy solution for some of these things ? I mean standard music and movie playback should be an easy one to get. There seems to be some areas where this is taking place for instance I know there is kmods for alot of things, but I am looking at the plain ol home user who wants to listen to music email basic desktop stuff. And yes I know all about the patent encumbered bs that everyone spouts all the time and i today's times this is just a moot point now. Lets face it some of the other distro's are starting to show their true colors and are often too concerned with updates and the latest and greatest packages. Which is breaking more things than anything else. So people are coming to try out CentOS because of the stability and lets face it one of the best and helpful communities out there right now. And yes I know CentOS is mainly known for the RHEL compatibility and more server usage than anything else and that is the main goal, but why can the project not cater to the home user and tinkerer and developer as well ? All in all I should not of called out rpmforge on such a short straw the work they do is excellent and any 3rd party repo you use has the potential to hose a machine no doubt about it. All in all I'm not saying I want Cent to become one of the "other" distros here I'm just saying is there room for improvement ? To make things easier for the average user at home. We see it all the time on the lists and IRC and I'm thinking a more straightforward approach to the situation and keeping some things not all of course, but the simple ones inhouse and in Cent repo's instead of having to go outside the box just for simple things. Oh well all in all this is just my humble opinion and I'm sure I will get ravaged and picked apart at the seams for this but hey that's me so fire away!! -- LostSon http://lostsonsvault.org CentOS - Its not just for servers ya know... signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
