Re: [CentOS] SysVinit guidance, please

2007-09-05 Thread Alain Spineux
I would evaluate the difference before to do that.
You should unpack both package in a temporary directory and look for difference.
This is very easy they are all text file.

Use # rpm2cpio RPM_file | cpio -idv
to unpack the RPM file

and # diff -ru /tmp/dir1 /tmp/dir2
to compare recursively text file

This will help you to understand what your probleme is.
Be carefull about file /etc/init.d/halt , this is the last command run
when shutingdow

This works too, but requires that you stay on top of security updates
yourself, rather than relying on the distribution updates. If you're
willing to take on the extra load, it'll work just fine.

I always seem to get the prompt coming up...
If I remove the graphical and do a text install, it works fine and if
I remove the --iscrypted and put a plain-text password in there, it
works as well.

What do you mean "remove the graphical" -- as far as I can
tell, it's graphical by default. The absence of the word
"text" means it'll do a graphical install.

When you get a prompt, what is it asking for? Do you have a
line for "auth" or "authconfig"? (In general, make sure you
have all the required directives like "lang", "keyboard", etc.)

[CentOS] Chrooting SFTP over SSH2

2007-09-05 Thread Nigel Kendrick
Hi,

As per the subject line - if I look up setting up chroot jails for SFTP over
SSH2 I'm led to various Web sites and patches and also to a CentOS wiki page
dated 2005, but what's the 'best' or 'correct' way to set this up for Centos
4.5 and 5?

Thanks

You might want to check out 'scponly' which is available in the
rpmforge repository -> http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/scponly/

[CentOS] xfs 0.4-1 kernel modules CentOS 4/5

2007-09-05 Thread David Thompson

Is anyone else having difficulty with the kmod-xfs-*0.4-1* rpms from the
centosplus repositories? For several years I have used a patched anaconda to
get xfs file systems into the initial install for non-root file systems. With
the 0.4-1 rpms, The subsequent reboot immediately reports file system xfs
errors, and the system is unusable. I'm finding this with both CentOS 4 and
CentOS 5.

A rebuild of the old kernel-module-xfs* rpms (the version 0.2-1 rpms) for
CentOS 4 for the new kernel (55.0.2.EL) works fine.

I've tried both the standard kernel (with rebuilt 0.4-1 rpms), and the
centosplus kernels for CentOS 4. I haven't yet tried to rebuild the 0.2-1 xfs
modules with CentOS 5.

Anyone else have experience with the new xfs modules?

Thanks much.

Yeah, it's going to be a patch/hack until chroot is native
to openssh which might never happen.

rssh and scponly are the two to look at (I use rssh).

If sftp is not a requirement, you should really look into
ftp/tls aka ftps. You can use vsftpd and it natively does
chroot and even virtual users. A simple config change to do
tls and you get certificate-based security.

Also, nearly every Windows & Mac gui ftp client supports
ftps for free or in their "basic" version (some clients
require "pro" versions to get sftp capability).

[CentOS] Promise VTrak and CentOS 5

2007-09-05 Thread Bart Schaefer
We're having a problem with Linux and/or the SCSI controller failing
to access an external RAID device. Components are:

SuperMicro 6025B-TR+V
CentOS 5.0 with yum update as of a week or two ago (kernel 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5)
Promise Vtrak M310p
Adaptec 29320 LPE -- aic79xx module

Sometimes this fails on the initial device probing (before the kernel
even begins to boot); sometimes the device is recognized ok and then
we get a failure later on in the boot sequence (and then the device
disappears).

RedHat Linux is in the compatibility list for that Adaptec card, and
the card is listed as compatible with the Promise VTrak. We were able
to get this combination to work by giving up on the Ultra320 setting
and dropping back to 160 in the controller setup, but if anyone has
suggestions or info it would be appreciated.

"remove the graphical" means switch it back to "text".

Here is the relevant section of the kickstart: (does prompt for pw):

lang en_US
keyboard us
timezone America/Los_Angeles --utc
rootpw textpw
# rootpw --iscrypted ***
reboot
logging --level=debug
graphical
# text
install
autostep --autoscreenshot
driverdisk --type=ext2 --source=http:///3w9650SE-x86_64-9.4.1.1.img
url --url http://*/CentOS5
bootloader --location=mbr --append="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
zerombr

part swap --recommended --ondisk=sda
part /boot --fstype "ext3" --ondisk=sda --size 200
part / --fstype "ext3" --ondisk=sda --size 10
auth --useshadow --enablemd5
network --bootproto=dhcp --device=eth0 --hostname=temp --onboot=yes --noipv6
firewall --disabled
selinux --disabled
xconfig --defaultdesktop=gnome --startxonboot --resolution=1024x768 --depth=32

If I uncomment these lines and re-comment their counterparts, then is prompts.
- The prompt is the default password prompt.
- The auth line is in there.
- I don't necessarily need graphical but it's a whole lot nicer due to
the screenshots provided

There has been a lot of traffic on Adaptec cards and ultra320 not working
properly with the current drivers. The only fix I have seen posted is to get
an LSI card.

I suggest you file a request at bugs.centos.org. My guess is that
when the centosplus kernel was built for C5, that particular support
was "missed". A new kernel update just came out, so there is a good
chance this option is enabled again if you ask now.

[CentOS] vsftp and "nopriv_user=ftpsecure" question

2007-09-05 Thread Blackburn, Marvin
I am a bit confused as to how this works.
I created a local unpriveleged user (with /bin/nologin shell).
i uncommented the line containing
nopriv_user=ftpsecure
and restarted vsftp.

I am confused as to what is supposed to happen.
Shuld the daemon /usr/sbin/vsftpd be run as root or should it be ftpsecure?

Or is the account only used to login to transfer files?

Any help would be appreciated.

[CentOS] Random Reboots

2007-09-05 Thread Steven Vishoot
Hello,

I am noticing that my server is randomly
rebooting,(since i have keeping an eye on it, the
server has rebooted two or three times in the last
week before this i am not sure how long this has been
going on) has anyone else experience any troubles with
kernel 2.6.9-55.0.2.ELsmp. I am going to try to use
the previous kernel to see if i still having these
problems but still wondering if i am only one that is
having this creep up on.

my other question where can i look (logs, files,
Directories) or something to install to see what is
causing these reboots.

thanks for all your wise wisdom.

You might consider checking hardware as well, such as a
flaky power supply.

i have done some research on web a found in order to run apache with
vhosts from ldap the module needed is mod_vhosts_ldap(correct me if
