[CentOS] wireless resourches for RHEL3

2007-07-10 Thread Rogelio Bastardo

Does anybody have any good RHEL3 wireless (802.11) resources?

I'm googling and haven't yet found anything good and am hoping someone
here can point me in the right direction.

The CentOS Development team is pleased to announce the availability of
the CentOS 5 i386 Live CD.

This CD is based on our CentOS-5.0 i386 distribution.

It can be used as a Workstation, with the following software:

OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
Firefox 1.5.0.10
Thunderbird 1.5.0.10
Gaim-2.0.0
Scribus-1.3.3
xchat-2.6.6
k3b-0.12.17
Gimp-2.2.13

It can also be used as a rescue CD with the following tools:

1. Full set of LVM and RAID command line tools
2. QTParted
3. Nmap and NMapFE
4. Graphical Traceroute
5. samba-3.0.23c with cifs kernel support to connect to Windows file shares
6. System Log Viewer
7. GUI Hardware Device Manager

The CentOS 5 i386 Live CD is based on the ADIOS Live CD Project:

http://os.cqu.edu.au/adios/adk.html

This CD has a non writable /usr directory, which means it is not able to
have software installed on it after boot up. The CentOS team is working
hard to create a Live CD for CentOS 5 that is based on the Fedora Live
CD Project (that is writable in all directories and even able to be used
for installs) ... unfortunately we were not able to get this working
with CentOS 5 for this release. We hope to get that Live CD working by
the release of CentOS 5.1.

That means that the purposes of this CD are to see if CentOS will
boot/work on your hardware, to test some of the features of CentOS as a
workstation, and to use as a Rescue CD. It does not contain all the
features of the 7 CD CentOS 5 Distribution on one CD :)

The CentOS Project would like to thank Patrice Guay (
http://www.nanotechnologies.qc.ca ) for the creation of this CD.
Patrice did the Tao Linux live CDs in the past and graciously donated
his time and effort to make this one too.

You can get the CentOS 5 i386 Live CD from the mirrors listed here:

Hello Johnny,

So the new common name for drbd modules is kmod-drbd... ?

Because when i try this:

# yum install kmod-drbd-smp.i686
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
Resolving Dependencies
--> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Please wait.
---> Package kmod-drbd-smp.i686 0:0.7.24-1.2.6.9_55.0.2.plus.c4 set to be
updated
--> Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: kernel-smp-i686 = 2.6.9-55.0.2.plus.c4 for package:
kmod-drbd-smp
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel-smp-i686 = 2.6.9-55.0.2.plus.c4 is needed by
package kmod-drbd-smp

Whereas I have a basic EL kernel-smp package installed ?

Since both the plus and regular module are in the extras directory (and
since plus is GREATER than EL) you will need to add this to the extras
section of CentOS-Base.repo

exclude=kmod-drbd\*plus\*

Ok thanks !

Do you think it's possible to do an "auto-select" dependence check ?
Or why not create a kmod-drbd-smp package and another kmod-drbd-smp-plus ?

Plus, when I issue a:

# yum list kmod\*
kmod-drbd.i686   0.7.24-1.2.6.9_55.0.2. extras
kmod-drbd-hugemem.i686   0.7.24-1.2.6.9_55.0.2. extras

kmod-drbd-xenU.i686  0.7.24-1.2.6.9_55.0.2. extras

There is nothing I can see about "plus" :O

With yum search , i got :

kmod-drbd-smp.i686   0.7.24-1.2.6.9_55.0.2. extras
Matched from:
kmod-drbd-smp

kmod-drbd-smp.i686   0.7.24-1.2.6.9_55.0.2. extras
Matched from:
kmod-drbd-smp

Same history :(
That's just ideas

That is because it is too big to fit ... one of this is the plus one,
the other is not.

I could do any number of things, but the PLUS kernel is by design an
upgrade to the regular kernel ... I guess I could move all plus modules
to the centos plus area.

The exclude should work.

CentOS doesn't because RHEL doesn't. If you don't like it, take it up with
them. :-) CentOS realizes that many people will want this, so they rebuild
postfix and put it in centosplus for your convenience (at least they did for
4 - I'm not sure where they are with 5 on this aspect).

Ok Matt; I've done it.

* download the source RPM.
* install it
* modify the spec file
* rebuild with new spec file.

I has been easy, at least in i386 packages (x86_64 packages rebuild
processes has failed in mysqlclient library link).

64 bit packages can be weird if you have 32-bit packages installed on the
system. I'm glad the process worked for you. Now you can yell at Jim Perrin
to update what's in centosplus so you don't have to do it yourself anymore.

(You're welcome, Jim)

My experisense is that some x.0 release are a bit unmature, and its its wise
to wait for a x.1 or x.2 release.
I use 4.4 with vmware-server, and it run perfectly, and i dont need any gui.
So I'll wait for a x.2 or x.3 release

My experisense is that some x.0 release are a bit unmature, and its its
wise to wait for a x.1 or x.2 release.
I use 4.4 with vmware-server, and it run perfectly, and i dont need any
gui. So I'll wait for a x.2 or x.3 release

But that's not the case for CentOS x.0 releases

[CentOS] udev - by-id

2007-07-10 Thread first last
Hi,

I am trying to set up a CentOS 4 machine with various iSCSI mounts for
Oracle, but devices keep on moving around, causing the mounts to fail
while called by the sd[a-f] names.

We thought about using labels, but, as some of the partitions do not
use EXT3, that was discarded, so we thought about using udev and by-id.

The problem is that udev does not seem to create the by-id folder or
any files within it, while the by-path all get created. The rules file,
51-by-id.rules contains details for the both of them, but the by-id do
not get detected, at least the logs don't indicate so.

The current contents of the rules file is as follows:

KERNEL="dasd*[!0-9]", PROGRAM="/sbin/dasd_id",
SYMLINK="disk/by-id/ccw-%c"
KERNEL="dasd*[0-9]", PROGRAM="/sbin/dasd_id",
SYMLINK="disk/by-id/ccw-%c-part%n"
SYMLINK="disk/by-id/scsi-%c"
SYMLINK="disk/by-id/scsi-%c-part%n"
KERNEL="sd*", PROGRAM="/sbin/path_id", SYMLINK="disk/by-path/%c"
KERNEL="hd*", PROGRAM="/sbin/path_id", SYMLINK="disk/by-path/%c"
KERNEL="dasd*", PROGRAM="/sbin/path_id", SYMLINK="disk/by-path/%c"
KERNEL="sd*", PROGRAM="/sbin/scsi_id", SYMLINK="disk/by-id/scsi-%c"

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Gabriel

I am running VMWare Server 1.0.4 on a CentOS 5.0 box with no problems
at all. In fact, I have been using my Windows guest on VMWS 1.0.4 to
create DVDs from some AVIs I downloaded from the web. Maybe I've just
become more comfortable with CentOS over the last few months, but I
thik this is a really nice, solid product, and VMWS works fine with
it.

I did go with CentOS5 because it worked with everything I wanted to have
running on the host box..

Where did you get VMware Server 1.0.4? The website only shows 1.0.3..

[CentOS] Centos 5 Live CD

2007-07-10 Thread BRUCE STANLEY
I just tried the Centos 5 Live CD on my Thinkpad T41.

It works pretty good but did not recognize my Laptop's
modem or WiFi (I guess no surprise there).

I do have a CardBus modem that is not a Win-modem
that I could try when I get home.

I did not see anyway to configure a PPP dialup call.
Is there a way to run kppp or Gnome's equivalent?

[CentOS] latest Asterisk on CentOS 5 64 bit ?

2007-07-10 Thread Florin Andrei
I will install CentOS 5 x86_64 on my home server. Among other things,
that machine will run Asterisk with an analog card connected to my
analog phone line, sort of a home-brewed PBX with VoIP capabilities.

The latest Asterisk version as of now is 1.4.7.1
I am trying to find RPM packages for CentOS 5 but so far no luck. The
best site so far is this:

http://djflux.net/rpms/fedora/6/

It's Fedora 6 so it may recompile on CentOS 5.

Anyone else using recent Asterisk versions on CentOS 5 64 bit? Where did
you get your packages from?

[CentOS] SMP motherboard not recognized

2007-07-10 Thread gen2
I'm having trouble with IBM xseries 345/dual Xeon 2.66GHz showing only
one processor. At boot I see "SMP motherboard not recognized". Using

title CentOS (2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5
module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen ro
root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet

module /initrd-2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen.img

have tried acpi=no (causes boot-hang), acpi=ht (boot hang), noapic (no
effect), and noht (no effect)

Booting to gentoo-minimal CDrom shows expected 4 cores (dual HT) with
cat /proc/cpuinfo, only 1 using 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen

Any ideas?
many thanks
