[ccp4bb] 2 postdoctoral fellowships available to study Type 4 Secretion Systems at Umeå University, Sweden

2018-12-17 Thread Ronnie Berntsson
Dear colleagues,

I have two postdoctoral fellowships available in my group. Please see below
for the details and feel free to spread it to anyone you think might be
interested and suitable for the positions.

Best wishes,
Ronnie

Postdoctoral fellowships to study Type 4 Secretion System

The Berntsson lab at the department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at
Umeå University, Sweden, is looking to recruit up to two postdoctoral fellows
(2-year projects) to study the structural and functional aspects of Type 4
Secretion Systems. These large protein complexes are responsible for horizontal
gene transfer between bacteria. As such, they facilitate the spread of, among
other genes, antibiotic resistance between bacteria, both intra- and
interspecies.
The overall goals of these particular projects are to continue the structural
and functional characterisation, already begun in the lab, of the i) the
adhesion proteins and ii) the DNA processing proteins of G+ Type 4 Secretion
Systems. The projects will involve molecular biology, biochemistry and
structural biology techniques, with an early emphasis on the functional
characterization of these proteins and their complexes.
Qualifications
The applicants must possess a PhD, or another diploma deemed equivalent to a
PhD, within molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology or a related
field. Furthermore, the applicant shall have practical experience and expertise
of cloning and protein production and purification in bacteria. The applicant
should preferably be experienced with functional studies of (membrane) proteins
using various molecular biology and biochemical methods, such as ITC, SPR,
fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy, as well as having experience with
protein crystallography. Previous experience of working with membrane proteins
is an advantage, as is previous experience of fluorescence microscopy and
electron microscopy. The applicants must have a very good level of English,
both written and spoken. The applicants are also expected to be good team
players, but should also be able to work independently.
Application
The application should consist of the following:

1. A short (maximum 1 A4 page) cover letter, explaining the motivation to
apply for the position.

2. The Curriculum Vitae of the applicant, including a list of published
peer-reviewed articles.

3. Copies of the PhD diploma (or equivalent).

4. Contact details for three references, of which one should be your PhD
supervisor.

The duration of the fellowship is 2 years. Your application should be written
in English and prepared as a package in PDF format, to be submitted to
ronnie.bernts...@umu.se. Make sure to use the
subject line: “postdoc application T4SS” in the application email. Submit the
application on January 15, 2019 at the latest. The top ranked candidates will
be contacted within three weeks from the closing date for an interview.
Starting date according to agreement. For more information, contact Dr. Ronnie
Berntsson.

[ccp4bb] PhD positions available in structural biology at the University of Manitoba

2018-12-17 Thread Gerd Prehna
Dear colleagues,

I am looking for enthusiastic MSc or PhD students to join my group in the
Department of Microbiology at the University of Manitoba, Canada
(https://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~prehnag/).

Our lab studies how bacteria communicate with their hosts, how they communicate
with each other, and how they communicate with other micro-organisms. The
supported graduate student positions are aimed at understanding the adaptation,
versatility, and host-specificity of Type VI secretion systems (T6SS) at the
molecular level using Salmonella as a model system. A MSc or PhD student will
research the role of one or more accessory proteins that modulate the function
of the Salmonella T6SS(s) using structural, biochemical, and molecular biology
techniques.

Applicants should possess or be near completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the
life sciences or a related discipline, and be interested in both biochemistry
and microbiology. Some experience in molecular biology as well as protein
expression and purification is desired but not required. Training in x-ray
crystallography and NMR spectroscopy will be provided. All projects have the
potential for training in cryo-EM. English language skills, the ability to work
in a team, willingness to learn, and good organizational skills are required.

Applications should include:
1. The applicant's CV
2. A one-page summary of their motivation for pursing graduate studies
3. Contact details for at least two references

Please send application materials by January 15th, 2019 to:

gerd.pre...@umanitoba.ca

The starting date is spring 2019.

The University of Manitoba (http://umanitoba.ca/) is located in Winnipeg,
Manitoba and is Western Canada’s first University. The University has large
core-group of structural biology and biochemical researchers between the
departments of Microbiology (http://www.sci.umanitoba.ca/microbiology/) and
Chemistry (The Manitoba Group in Protein Structure and Function), access to the
Canadian Light Source synchrotron, and comprehensive molecular biophysics
instrumentation (500 and 600 MHz NMR, in-house XRD, ITC, CD, DSC, AUC, and
MST). Winnipeg is also home to the National Microbiology Laboratory, a leader
in infectious disease research and collaborator with the Department of
Microbiology.

[ccp4bb] Survey for the CCP4 community study

2018-12-17 Thread LE DU Marie-Hélène
Dear CCP4 users ,

Not only is CCP4 a historical project born to promote the collaborative
development of software dedicated to crystallography, but it has played a key
role in building the biological crystallography community and remains an
international reference and a keystone.
CCP4 also represents a very valuable teaching community through interactions
between newcomers and experts.
Following the French MOOC " Voyage au coeur du vivant avec les rayons X : la
cristallographie." "("A journey I the heart of life with X-ray:
crystallography"), I have initiated an analysis of CCP4 as a teaching community.
In order to complete this analysis, your contribution would be very useful.
Thank you in advance for completing the following short survey (5-10 min):

2018-12-17 Thread Robbie Joosten
Hi Marie-Hélène,

Thanks for having such a wide 5-20 years category. Keeps me from feeling really
old ;)
I can honestly say that I've learned a lot on the BB and that some of the
discussions have really broadened my knowledge beyond the standard books. I try
to pay it forward whenever I can.
It is wonderful that we have a community where the oldest members are four
times as old as the youngest ones and many people contribute not just knowledge
and insight, but also historical perspective on our long-standing field.

Cheers,
Robbie

Re: [ccp4bb] Survey for the CCP4 community study

2018-12-17 Thread Eleanor Dodson
I am an old hand at the BB - I guess I am both a methodoligist (Sp?) and
formerly a software developer.
You can only develop useful software if you continuously liase with users -
it is all too easy to produce a beautiful artefact that no-one either wants
or can use easily. And all too easy to fail to spot the bugs in your
code..The BB has been one of the valuable links between users and
developers, and gives us all a quick and straightforward way to communicate
.

I am proud of the way developers are now putting real effort in to
reporting results, and providing a meaningful analysis of potential
problems. But this sort of online guideance needs user response too - is it
comprehenible? Is it accurate? etc etc.

It will be interesting if you can stimulate debate about these issues.

Thank you
