[bdlug] Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in Dhaka
Dear Members, Microsoft founder Bill Gates arrived in Bangladesh on Monday for a brief visit during which he aims to commit assistance to expanding the impoverished country's information technology industry. Accompanied by his wife Melinda, the Microsoft chief was received at Dhaka airport by Science and Technology Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan. Gates participated in the signing of an agreement between Microsoft Bangladesh and the ministry of education for training over 10,000 teachers and 200,000 students in the next three years. Microsoft Bangladesh is a joint venture of the Microsoft Corporation and Bangladesh's Square Informatix and has been operating since June. Gates also met Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. "His visit is very important for the national interests of Bangladesh as it will give a new impetus to Bangladesh's nascent IT industry," said Akhtar Hussain, an information technology expert. Earlier, Gates and his wife inspected a number micro-finance and health projects run by leading non-government organization BRAC. The Bill Melinda Gates Foundation donated $1 million to BRAC to run projects last year. Gates also visited a health project of the Dhaka-based International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. Have a nice evening.
