Re: [bdlug] Internet access from Archlinux.

2005-07-22 Thread Mojahedul Hoque Abul Hasanat
You need to enable IP forwarding in your ArchLinux server. The general way to
do this in Linux is adding the following line in /etc/sysctl.conf:

net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1

Then give this command as root:

sysctl -p

If you still can not access the Net from PC4 and PC5, please check if you have
any firewall on ArchLinux.

download the all or essential codecs

or

extract it in "/usr/lib/win32/" (chmod to read)
it is the default path that both xine and mplayer search.
u may hav to create the win32 dir in /usr/lib
then with xine or mplayer base soft will enable u to play wmv and wma
and mov

like kaffeine etc.

wasssalam.
not very sure which software you need but you can try
http://www.vmware.com/download/ as they have a
evaluation software available for Linux systems. If
you need full version try looking for a oler one as
some older VMWare Softwares were full version and
didnt need any Registrations.

For x86 emulation the ones I know of are Bochs [ bochs.sourceforge.net
] and Plex86 [ plex86.sourceforge.net ]. If you want powerpc emulation
there's pearpc [ pearpc.sourceforge.net ], although performance was
horribly sluggish- it "did" boot MacOS 10.2 on my 1.4ghz P4. If you
only want virtual linux machines get xen or User Mode Linux.
I've never used slackware so I can't give you any slack specific info.

[bdlug] Microsoft's eye on open source By Eileen Yu, CNETAsia

2005-07-22 Thread Omi Azad
Microsoft's eye on open sourceBy Eileen Yu, CNETAsia
Published on ZDNet News: July 21, 2005, 11:12 AM PT

With the growing momentum of the open-source movement, one could say
that Martin Taylor doesn't have one of the most enviable jobs.
As Microsoft's general manager of platform strategy, Taylor has to deal
with anti-Microsoft sentiments while evangelizing his company's
products. Despite the challenges, he maintains an unwavering conviction
that his company can deliver better returns than those offered by
open-source software.

According to Taylor, businesses that tried out Linux or other
open-source tools are now realizing that they are putting in more
investment into the technology than they had initially thought.

"The Linux phenomenon created this emotional hype or spike where, in
some ways, people became less concerned about some of these practical
issues around cost of ownership, reliability, security and so on," he
said. "But I think now, two to three years into this, we're seeing these
issues around cost and reliability coming up such that, we now know we
need to go back to the basics on how we evaluate a platform and choose it."

In an interview with ZDNet Asia, Taylor explains why he calls the
open-source architecture "brittle" and reveals what he thinks causes "a
level of pain" for Microsoft.

Q: In the last six months, what have you been focused on in terms of
development work?
Taylor: We continue to do the same things that we've been doing in the
last couple of years. First and foremost, we are looking to understand
some of the scenarios like why customers are considering Linux, and
making sure we have the right offerings for the marketplace.

We continue to run our lab where we analyze and look at open-source
software to understand and ensure we're still building the right things
from a short-term or long-term basis.

Within any technology, industry analysts would say it takes three to
five years after people deploy something before they begin to evaluate
whether they should upgrade, or if they should look into (a change of)
platform. Or at least this happens in most parts of the world. We're
hitting that part of the window now--in the last six months--where we're
seeing customers who have been using Linux or an open-source technology
in the last three to four years and had gone into this thinking they're
going to save money but they actually applied more people to the
challenge than they initially thought.

They're also realizing they can't migrate and evolve (open-source
technology) as much as they had thought. For example, U.S. company
Flyi.com handles about 90 percent of travel reservations through their
online portal, which they run on Linux and Apache.

The systems were running fine until the company had a huge spike in
traffic, and there were all kinds of downtime issues. So they did the
upgrades, added a few servers, some hardware, some memory and new
technologies around the Web site to do more customer relationship
database tracking. It was all very complex, and some of the seams of the
Linux architecture were beginning to show.

In what way is Linux or an open-source infrastructure unsuitable?
Taylor: You can build it, design it, and it will work great. The trouble
begins when you want to add things to it, add some services and things
like that. Because of the brittle nature of the platform, when you do
that, other things break. We see that in the labs all the time, and our
customers see that as well. So that has a (total) cost of ownership
impact on it.

There is this issue of putting more (into) the problem than a customer
thought, and not being able to grow around your Linux installations. You
can do things just great--I want to be very clear about that--but (when
it comes to) the adding of modules...it becomes more and more difficult
(to manage). You almost have to start from scratch in some ways. There's
a cost associated here.

It is also more of a commercial discussion now. These trends are not
necessarily new, but we are really seeing it being played out now. It's
also not so much about the open-source community or the millions of
developers around the world building Linux. It's about Red Hat, it's
about Novell, it's about IBM...really looking for ways to monetize sets
of things around Linux. In some ways, this is a good thing for customers
because things are more black-and-white now, and it allows us to have a
very balanced conversation with them around these key issues.

So why do you think the ideals of open source--giving back to the
community, being able to see, use and change source codes--have appealed
to so many people? Do you think it's more about people taking an
anti-Microsoft stance?
Taylor: Well, first you have to define "people" because I can tell you
that most IT professionals don't want to be in the business of
maintaining system-level software. It's an interesting conversation when
you talk about wh

2005-07-22 Thread Omi Azad
IBM steps into open-source Java project
Published: July 21, 2005, 9:58 AM PDT
By Martin LaMonica
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
http://news.com.com/IBM+steps+into+open-source+Java+project/2100-7344_3-5798290.html

IBM has begun participating in open-source Java project Harmony and
intends to contribute code to the initiative, according to a Big Blue
executive.
In the past week, IBM has dedicated an employee to working with the
proposed open-source project, which is being done at the Apache Software
Foundation, said Rod Smith, vice president of advanced technology at IBM.

At this point, IBM's participation is limited to thoughts on design, but
the company likely will contribute code to the project, Smith said.

"I think you'll see some code down the road. I'm sure you will. But
right now, it's getting involved in some of the ideas and design they're
trying to put together," he said. "We have some ideas on that, and
hopefully that can be incorporated in the whole Harmony strategy."

Harmony was launched in May to create an open-source edition of Java
Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE), the software needed to run Java
programs on desktop PCs.

Smith said that IBM chose to wait before jumping in until the project's
direction and goals were clearer.

"We really like to see the community get started, and they're still
working out the rough edges of what they want to deliver. And we didn't
want to disrupt that," he said.

IBM has long made it clear that it would like an open-source edition of
Java. Last year, Smith sent an open letter to Rob Gingell, then-vice
president at Sun Microsystems, urging the company to open source Java.

Sun has stopped short of doing that because open-source editions of Java
could fragment the standard and cause compatibility problems, according
to Sun executives. Sun has, however, changed its licensing policies,
making it easier to see the Java SE code and make contributions to it.

Until now, neither IBM nor Java steward Sun have formally participated
in the project, although employees from both companies have voiced their
support.

In developer circles, however, there has already been speculation that
IBM would participate in Harmony and contribute potentially significant
portions of code.

IBM already has its own Java virtual machine--one of the components of
Java SE--and a great deal of expertise in Java. In May, it acquired
open-source Java application server company Gluecode, which employs
open-source Java experts including Geir Magnusson Jr., one of the
submitters of Project Harmony.

'The Daily ICT Bangladesh' - is the first Bangla ICT daily newspaper
publishes online in Bangla unicode"

But apparrently that's not correct. On a non-IE browser, one needs to
have the "boishakhi" font installed to view the bangla text. Isn't it
ironic that they have a pro-Unicode article on their site which
doesn't use Unicode itself:
