[Ayatana] Software center icon needs designers minds, and new humanity desktop methafor.
take a look at these bugs and think about it. A quick and easy idea. Using the same concept used in U1 brand for the USC. http://ubuntuone.com/30SgZIkoCLbxKWGhS2CUpY The similarity with the U1 icon gives it coherence (as a Canonical service) and the color change makes it different enough to avoid confusion. The arrow pointing downwards is a very familiar icon for downloads. When it comes to getting software is probably more familiar than the shopping bag and avoids the "commercial" aspect (a shopping bag is a recognisable icon for purchasing goods, but it doesn't work well with the idea of getting free of charge goods). It is woth to notice that the amount of commercial applications in USC is still (and probably will stay) pretty low compared to the number of free packages available. Additionally, this icon has a good readability in any size, which doesn't seem to be the case with the current proposed icon. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ayatana Post to : ayatana@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ayatana More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I wonder if it's really possible to create a single icon that can communicate this complicated concept to such a wide aundience range. Your grandmother probably won't be able to understand what a software repository (or a software center) is without a prior explaination, and using a familiar image as a shopping bag can have an undesired effect, like "hey, I don't want to buy a program. I want a free one". You simply can't create a single icon with such audience coverage. What is familiar for young, computer-literate people, may not be familiar for your grandmother, and things that are familiar to your grandmother may make no sense to younger people. Seeking for universal solutions for such complex concepts, and with the additional need of making it look simple and easy to read in small sizes is probably just utopic > On the other hand, this is more a logotipe than icon for me,includes a brand > in itself very differently and I like that. I created that "logotype" version just to show the re-use of the U1 brand idea. I think that converting the USC from an application to a "service" has potential, though. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ayatana Post to : ayatana@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ayatana More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I like the mockup icon, but not for USC. I think icons like that (but a different colour) would be good for synaptic and update manager. 2011/9/3 dani: It's so beautiful and clever, too clever ( for sombody) the usability testing revealed that people need to have things very easy, try to imagine that your grandmother would have to guess that the icon represents? This is, in my opinion what the design team try to do, ubutnu for (everybody). [Ayatana] Thunderbird needs tighter panel integration
At present, the only use for the mail icon in the panel is to set up thunderbird (for email anyway). Once an account has been set up, it would be useful for thunderbird to check emails in the background, and turn blue when new emails are available. This would mean the user does not need to keep thunderbird open to check emails and justify the use of a mail icon in the panel. It should at least list the accounts that have already been set up, rather than just showing 'set up mail'. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ayatana Post to : ayatana@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ayatana More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
