Will this ever be possible on synaptics clickpads and touchpads, too?

Yes, if they support 4-touch, otherwise they will be used as pointing
devices, clicking on the button.

Well spotted.

This problem has existed since at least 2006.

Perhaps it could be fixed as a papercut.

[Ayatana] Make categorization of applications more visible

2011-03-07 Thread Pablo Quirós
I've started to use Unity a few days ago, and I had a problem finding where
I could see my installed applications divided into different categories
(accessories, games, system...).

It's common for me to go through the menus to see what applications of a
concrete kind I have installed.
For example: if I have to do some system configuration task, I go through
the System menu and read the names of the applications to find the most
suitable for my purpose, if there is any.

In Unity, it wasn't obvious for me how to do this. In fact, for a few days I
thought that I couldn't. Now I've realised that if I push 'Find more apps'
in the dash, in the right of the search bar there is a drop-down menu where
I can select the category I want. It wasn't easy to find, at least for me.

I think this categorization is important; having the applications classified
gives a feeling of cleanliness and control of your installation that is
important for lots of users. It helps you to find easily what applications
of a kind you have installed, and helps new users (and some old ones) to
find what they want, sometimes better than doing a search.

It wouldn't be hard to do it better; when pressing 'find apps' in the dash,
the user would see the search bar, just like now, and below it the different
categories. If he clicks a category, all the applications of this category
would be displayed. Instead, now Unity shows below the search bar a few
applications in alphabetical order, which I think is of little use.

Just my two cents ;)

[Ayatana] window and workspace management in unity

2011-03-07 Thread Bazon

hello, i'm new to this list.
see (*) below why i came here.

i have a few comments on window and workspace management in unity:

1. selecting windows
when you have multiple windows of one application, clicking its icon in
the launcher gets you an graphic overview of all windows of this
application. selecting the right window can be quite hard like that:
it's easy when you have several images, but when you have several text
documents, it's really hard to distinguish them: everything is zoomed
much smaller! selecting one such window was much easier by window-title
in the task bar.

so i propose:
just don't zoom the window title. or maybe make a bubble for each window
in which you can read the title.

2. workspace management
i'm used to work on six workspaces and doing that, i don't like to be
distracted by things going on on the other workspaces. in gnome or with
cairo dock (as an option), that was easy: one just can see
representations of the windows on the active workspace in the taskbar /
in the dock.
with unity, that seems to be not possible: the launcher shows
representations of ALL windows on ALL workspaces. plus the launcher bar
can get overfilled, so you have to scroll... (avoiding overfilled
taskbar was my first motivation to use more than one workspace)

so i propose:
please add at least an option, so that one only sees the things on the
momentary workspace. see bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/683170 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/689733

3. launcher options
for better window / workspace management, i would like to have some more
right click options for the launcher:

 * open new window
 * close all
 * close all on this workspace
 * show all
 * show all on this workspace

thank you for your attention.

regards,
Bazon

Re: [Ayatana] window and workspace management in unity

2011-03-07 Thread Shane Fagan
Nice timing I did a post on ubuntu planet about workspaces and had
some opinions on it
http://shanefagan.com/opening-applications-on-different-workspaces/

TBH I think we can do some nice stuff with workspaces if we think hard
about it. The issue is we need to be very careful since they are
already a bit un-needed so we need to think of useful good things to
do with them or we need to remove them if we cant think of good ways
to use them.
