[Alsa-user] live or pci128

2001-10-01 Thread shea martin

I am looking for a soundcard.  My choices are
sb live, or pci128 ($10 cheaper).
I am in a remote location, so these are really my
only two options.

First:  Yes, I did pour thru the mail list
archives but did not find anything that specifically answered my
question.

In Linux, will I notice a difference in sound
quality b/n these two cards?  I don't care about recording quality, or
surround sound, only 2-speaker +sub music output.

Would love to hear opinions.

TIA

[Alsa-user] re: pci128 or sbLive or AOpen card

2001-10-02 Thread shea martin

Will any of these AOpen/Acer cards sound better
than a SBLive or PCI128?  (I am ordering a system from a vendor which only
carries Creative and Acer sound cards).
ACER AW320 PCI A3D WAVETABLE SOUND CARD
ACER AW744 PRO YAMAHA YMF744 4-CHANNEL
AOPEN AS9400 4 CHANNEL PCI SOUND CARD
AOPEN AS9600 6 CHANNEL PCI SOUND CARD 5.1

The more opinions the better.  I order on
Wednesday.

Thanks.

surround sound decoding, rendering MIDI output, etc).

thanks for advice.

[Alsa-user] .9 beta's and sblive

2001-10-15 Thread Shea Martin

I just downloaded and installed the latest .9.0 beta8a drivers (stable
version did not want to compile for me).

I did a ./configure; make; make install on the three packages (drivers,
libs, utils). I then did a modprobe emu10k1 (I have a sblive). The
driver seemed to load fine.

I then tried to unmute the card with "amixer set pcm 100 unmute"
and got :

bash$ amixer set pcm 100 unmute
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory

I also tried :

bash$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file
or directory

Did I miss a step?

ps - is sblive broken in .9?

[Alsa-user] no libasound ?

2001-10-15 Thread Shea Martin

I am trying to compile XAmixer, but keep getting the no libasound
error. I have the .9.0beta8a alsa drivers, do they install libasound in
a different location?
