Not new, and I haven't used them, but there's this:

https://mikrotik.com/product/gper

Could you use powerline networking? I've used these:

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Powerline-Wi-Fi-Extender-TL-WPA7617KIT/dp/B09
L85MFNY

but you could probably use something like this since you don't need WiFi:

https://www.amazon.com/Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter-Extender-TP-Link/dp/B084CZ
MYNM

This assumes the telemetry board location is on a branch circuit from the
same electrical panel as the house, and that it is indoors.

Need to connect a telemetry board to my house home network.

Extending the LAN. Probably 750 feet away.

Anything new or better these days for this type of thing?

365 feet from my garage. Needs to be wireless. Connecting to the web browser

Re: [AFMUG] Extending home network

2024-10-14 Thread Ken Hohhof
Well, you could use these:

https://store.ui.com/us/en/products/loco5ac

I would not use first gen or M series Nanostations, too many problems (lockups,
tape over LEDs degrading from UV and letting in rain, etc.) Even the AC series
which are much improved have some quirks, sometimes they get flaky if you run
them at the low end of U-NII-1 like 5180 MHz.

We have switched to using ePMP Force 300-16 for short links between buildings,
but partly for the cnMaestro cloud management if they are hidden behind a
customer managed router. They are like 3 times the cost of a NS5AC Loco, but
when comparing keep in mind the ePMP radio includes a POE, the Nanostation does
not. The Loco is much smaller, like a bar of soap, than the F300-16 which is
like an oversized rearview mirror.

Yes... just use a pair of Ubiquiti Loco5ac. It's the cheapest and simplest
thing to use for something like that, and it'll do the job fine.

Re: [AFMUG] Extending home network

2024-10-14 Thread Mathew Howard
Cheap 802.11ad, and later 802.11ay chipsets being mass produced.

Facebook poured a ton of money into Terragraph/802.11ay at one point, which
never really worked very well as it was intended to be used, but the
chipsets were adapted to better products.

Re: [AFMUG] Extending home network

2024-10-14 Thread Robert
It's overkill for speed, but it's the simplest setup and never worry
about interference.   You just hang and point at each other and feed
into your networks.   Preconfigured completely, so there's no config to
do.   This is my goto for anything less than a mile.   Braindead
networking...

Could you use powerline
networking?? I?ve used these:

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Powerline-Wi-Fi-Extender-TL-WPA7617KIT/dp/B09L85MFNY
but you could probably use
something like this since you don?t need WiFi:

https://www.amazon.com/Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter-Extender-TP-Link/dp/B084CZMYNM
This assumes the telemetry
board location is on a branch circuit from the same electrical panel as the
house, and that it is indoors.

"There are also retarders that are essentially hydraulic pumps pumping into a

That could be taken more than one way.

Jake brakes shut down some of the valves to create more forceful engine
braking. Those are the noisy ones. There are also retarders that are
essentially hydraulic pumps pumping into a dummy load. Always good to have
brake options.

Regenerative braking instead of engine braking would be a big improvement. As
would more torque for up hills or just getting up to speed. And I imagine an
electric semi would be a lot more pleasant to drive when stopped in traffic or
just inching along.

I know a farmer just went through getting his CDL to drive the family grain
truck, still needs to pass the manual transmission test because the test site
didn’t have any but that’s what the farm owns.

I wonder if you need a special CDL to drive an electric semi, or if it’s the
same as a diesel with an automatic.

Someone just the other day was explaining to me that the loud engine braking on
a big diesel isn’t the same as on my 6 speed manual car. Apparently there’s
something called a “Jake Brake”. OK, I would have guessed that was the name of
a porn star.

Yeah, there are a lot of super truckers out there that think that if a truck
can't be used for cross-continent trips, it's junk. The Tesla semi simply isn't
meant for trips that need a sleeper.

I think the complaints I read back when it was first introduced focused on two
things – driver positioned in the center, and no sleeper cab.

Supposedly with the driver in the center, it makes it difficult to pass
paperwork out the window at weigh stations and depots, or to access touchscreen
kiosks. Also can’t stick your head out the window to look behind when backing
up.

No place to put a bed, and passenger seat is behind the driver not next to.

Probably minor complaints that can be addressed by companies like Pepsi or DHL
that set their own procedures.

I just read a review of the Tesla Semi the other day. It was mainly by Pepsico
execs and actual semi drivers. From the review, the drivers absolutely love
them. The huge torque makes mountain/hill climbing almost effortless, and the
lack of noise and stink is a major plus. Of the drivers who were interviewed,
they all said they never wanted to go back to diesel.

Pepsico has something like 50 deployed with (some number of) million miles
driven, and they said they wanted to get 50 more.

How is the Tesla Semi doing? Unlike the Robovan, it already exists, doesn’t it?

I remember a review early on that said the designers must have never talked to
an actual semi driver. But maybe the intent is to have them be driverless.

Robovan seems like a better idea to me than the stupid Cybertruck. As far as
the taxi, it seems to me Waymo has been walking the walk while Tesla talks the
talk. Millions of miles of experience on the road probably count for more than
glitzy demos and hype. But honestly the Chinese will probably beat them all at
the driverless taxi game.
