Weirdly opposite here. My brothers are vocally alt-right. All ex-military,
all purport to be Christian. One is dead from substance abuse and suffered
a variety of mental health issues. The surviving two are always broke,
angry, and unhappy. I feel like I have to tiptoe around them so they don't
fly off the handle about anything.

...and I'm not at all "woke". I just know it's not for me to pass
judgement.

On the other hand, this is NY. Maybe they feel like they're the rebels

they're the rebels fighting the evil Republican death star.

Never expected I would not be able to speak my mind at family dinners just
to be able to still see some of my kids.

Feel like I was convicted in absentia, thrown in the hole for a lifetime

I loved my parents and grandparents.

Never felt they had to earn it.

Never would have thought of condemning them for the things they said.

Funny, I have a sister that lives 1000 miles from me. Our families were

Well, maybe their thin skin needs some toughening up. Everyone could use some
more grit.

In my experience, those that feel compelled to “call out” people never affect
positive change. And frequently they harm themselves in the trying. Becoming
toxic themselves to those they are trying to shame/expose/coerce/educate/put
down.

What good does it do to tell some red necked construction worker that he is
being racist? I just avoid those with views I abhor. And I try to teach by
example. But I never call anyone out. At work, if they are my employee, I
address the concern in private. If they don’t change I fire them.

Social justice warriors are idiots in my opinion. They invent a noble cause
with which to enshroud themselves while acting out in socially impolitic ways,
a good reason, in their mind, to be an anarchist. Look at antifa and proud
boys.

Exact same people, doing the exact same things, for the exact same reasons.
The ONLY difference is some contrived battle line they are trying to advance.

Re: [AFMUG] OT mildly political

2022-05-19 Thread Andy Trimmell
The biggest problem is that people have created a barrier with politics to
unlove people. No one is allowed to just have an opinion. It has to be this
emotional debate of the ages and if you’re not all in then you’re all out.

All politicians lie. Bush lied to people, Obama lied to people, Trump lied and
Biden has lied and is lying. From pro-life to flat earther to BLM all of the
people hating on each other have no humility or severely lack in it.

I’ve watched all these sides willing to kill or die to be able or not be able
to kill or die.

It’s all sad and with social media gas lighting the most miniscule things it’s
not going away.

If I went and shunned my father because he truly believed Jimmy Carter was
going to do good when he voted for him and it ended with my dad starving I
wouldn’t have a relationship with, in my opinion, is the best dad a guy could
have.

I don’t know about any of you but I’m out there in the world to create change
and help people in my community. I hope anyone complaining about the world
isn’t just sitting in their recliner and they’re doing the same thing.

I hope you all have a great day.

Calling out people does work but only if you have established relationships
and it is a relationship that both wish to keep going. It can help humanize
the problem and help the other person see the harm.

All my kids are late 20s to almost 40 years old. They all are millenials. The
most “woke” Jr high science teacher daughter is all on board with the idea
that if a kid tells her he or she wants to change genders but they are afraid
to tell their parents, then the school has to help the kid without telling the
parents.

One other daughter thinks society has created an oppressive situation making it
impossible to prosper.

I have a son and daughter with masters degrees, electrical engineering and
forensic toxicology that are doing well.

I have two other sons that are taking over running my company. We get along
very well and they are definitely unwoke.

I have one daughter in England that is a commercial artist in the printing
industry about to finish her master’s degree this semester. She leans left but
is very close to her mother and myself.

The “woke ones” are unhappier it seems and thin skinned. Those are the ones I
have to tip toe around and they get all butt hurt if I say the wrong thing.

I never anticipated that some day I would have to pass a woke litmus test in
order to earn a visit with grandchildren...

Woke, broke, in therapy and crazy unhappy.

That is how I would describe some of my kids.

The alt right unwoke ones seem to have money and happiness.

Never expected I would not be able to speak my mind at family dinners
just to be able to still see some of my kids.

Feel like I was convicted in absentia, thrown in the hole for a
lifetime sentence, but taken out of solitary confinement now and then at
their whims just so they could claim to have compassion on me for a half
hour walk in the woods. Maybe longer if I pay for dinner.

 Odd times

I loved my parents and grandparents.

Never felt they had to earn it.

Never would have thought of condemning them for the things they said.

Funny, I have a sister that lives 1000 miles from me. Our families
were separate all while the kids were growing.

But some of hers have done the same things to her. Using the exact
 same vernacular.

Must have something to do with energy drinks I think.

Reprimand in private, praise in public, else you will lose employees.
Are you an employer? Do you publically shame employees? If you do they will
never learn.

Re: [AFMUG] OT mildly political

2022-05-19 Thread Sean Heskett
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Lauren Bobert is a libertarian, she is
FAR from it. What I meant was when the options are:

Moderate democrat
Whackadoodle republican (Bobert)
Libertarian

My 1st choice would be libertarian,
2nd choice would be moderate democrat (they do exist)
3rd choice is NOT the whackadoodle

In CO 35-40% of voters are republican, 35-40% democrat and 20-30%
independent

If I don’t vote for the democrat and vote for the libertarian there’s
enough republicans that my vote becomes a “throwaway” vote and i instead
inadvertently help the whackadoodle get elected. Which is the WORST
possible outcome.

Ranked choice voting would solve this but that’s a discussion and a can of
worms for another thread/day lol.

Seems like an impossible problem. But if you read news accounts from 200 years
ago, horrible negative campaigning and actual fist fights were normal in
political races.

I vote no whackadoodles.

Unfortunately most of the people identifying as libertarians these days (at
least the high profile ones) are whackadoodle republicans.

I just want more compromise between the two major parties. If Dems could
learn to spend less and Republicans would stop attacking marginalized
people, we'd have a fairly normal government.

I'm also not a fan of how easy it is to buy guns. I know plenty of far
right nut jobs that make me nervous knowing they have a stockpile of guns
and ammo. The majority of mass shootings in the US are committed by white
males and most of them lean far right. I don't see many liberals out there
committing mass shootings.

It should be harder to buy a gun than to buy a car, get a license, adopt a
child, get a loan, become a cop, etc. Everyone should have extensive
training with target shooting and a psych eval. If anyone threatens
violence verbally or in writing, they should immediately lose the right to
possess a firearm. Make it possible but difficult to own guns and the
violence will decrease. Destroy guns that are found during crimes, offer
buyback programs, etc to start dwindling the supply. Strict gun control
works in other countries and it can work here too.

How many more people need to keep dying before the "pro-life" party gets
off their ass and does something about it?! If they claim it's a mental
health problem, then they should support psych evals in order to own
firearms.

Gun rights are not terribly high on my list of thing a deeply care about. I
want the right to go buy a gun if I want to go buy a gun. If I have to pass a
background check and wait a day or three, no big deal. If they want to take my
right away because I am a verified nut case or violent offender, OK fine.

I do think that requiring a gun owner to have an insurance policy of $1M is not
the worst idea. You have to have insurance if you own that other lethal
weapon, a car. Why not a gun?

Might calm some of it down. Might make ownership harder.
But in the end, bad guys will always have guns no matter where you live or what
the laws are.
