Re: [AFMUG] Good Switches

2020-07-01 Thread Peter Kranz via AF
Complex question.. Linux controls the behavior of the switch, but the actual
switching is done via merchant silicon like Jericho2, Trident, etc.
depending on the switch, so Linux is not actually doing the switching or
routing.

[AFMUG] Error counters on SFP interfaces

2020-07-01 Thread Adam Moffett
We've got a ton of Mikrotiks out there.  On SFP's we're mostly using the
cheap Fiberstore stuff.

A handful of times we've had to trace down a packet loss issue on a
fiber connection, and in any of the cases I've touched all of the
Mikrotik error counters were zero.  We end up troubleshooting by
swapping parts one at a time until the problem goes away, and this
offends my sensibilities.

So when something is clearly wrong, why aren't errors reported? Is it:
1) Mikrotik interfaces never report errors to begin with?

2) My cheapo SFP's don't report an error to the host switch/router?

3) An error at the SFP is invisible to the host switch/router?

..and I'm not talking about optical problems because those are
detectable with an OTDR pretty much 100% of the time. Talking
specifically about issues with switches and SFP's.

[AFMUG] OT - stock market

2020-07-01 Thread Ken Hohhof
I spent about an hour on the phone yesterday with my guy at Morgan Stanley,
basically cutting my exposure to equities in my IRA in half. Went from
60/40 to 30/70. Also got rid of one real estate ETF.

But the interesting factoid I wanted to pass along was he said a lot of
individual small investors are currently speculating in the market including
in options basically as a form of entertainment. And that is helping to
boost some irrational exuberance. Even some big name stocks that have done
well during the pandemic have been bid up to some pretty crazy PE ratios.

I guess if you can't go to a movie, concert, bar, or casino, there's Wall
Street. But people at a casino aren't necessarily looking to make a profit,
just have a good time while losing their money.

It also turns out he knows the family of the kid who committed suicide
because he thought erroneously that he lost almost a million dollars on some
millennial focused stock trading app.

Re: [AFMUG] OT - stock market

2020-07-01 Thread Ken Hohhof
There are many option strategies, some are actually pretty conservative. When
I was much younger, I used to sell covered calls to generate extra income on
stocks I was long that had appreciated. Worst outcome was the stock got called
away at a price I was willing to accept. Most of the time the options expired
worthless and I pocketed a few bucks and did it again.

There are also strategies like straddles and spreads that are not high risk.

You can also buy options, and should be prepared to lose what you spent on them
if you guess wrong. But you can’t lose more than you spent. If you guess
right, you can make a lot. It’s like Vegas, if you buy $500 of chips, that’s
the most you can lose.

Really risky is buying on margin, or short sales, or selling naked options.
Yes, I don’t have the guts for those.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Karen?

2020-07-01 Thread Ken Hohhof
The debate always seems to be what do you call a male Karen? The most
common suggestions seem to be Brad and Chad, not sure why.

A certain large state seems to have a male Karen for Lt. Gov. Or maybe he's
more of a Gomer. Which makes me think of a certain US Rep whose last name
sounds like Gomer.

Women would probably say there is no specific name for a male Karen because
all males are Karens, dumb and mouthy and entitled.

I tend to skip from stone to stone when crossing the creek. Too old to take
much of a bath. But I did put most of it on TSLA when it dipped below 400 a
couple of months back, but I have been watching it for almost 10 years. I knew
it was a bargain.

We have friends who had made a small fortune on margin and they bought a sail
boat to go on an 8-week cruise. Excrement hit the fan while they were gone, and
when they returned, they had to sell both their house and their sail boat to
recover.

There are also strategies like straddles and spreads that are not high risk.

You can also buy options, and should be prepared to lose what you spent on

Really risky is buying on margin, or short sales, or selling naked options.
Yes, I don’t have the guts for those.

Been looking at these guys. Never used them but pricing seems competitive.

On the L3 side, they don't have DHCP relay or IPv6 features. They are
"roadmap" items they claim "should" be out by the end of the year. Those are a
deal breaker for us but YMMV. It's definitely a switch/edge device and not
targeted at core routing.

One thing I really like is the smaller form (<14" deep) and dual -48VDC input.
They have AC and 24VDC as well.

Re: [AFMUG] OT...It's hot....the weather

2020-07-01 Thread Jaime Solorza
Darrin (RIP) was a tech from Nebraska that moved to El Paso in late 90s and
I hired him when I had my company...we were doing allot of cross border
shots from Texas towns to US and Japanese factories on Mexican side
(Maquiladoras). He got hooked on Mexican channels and after three years he
learned to speak Spanish. He thought some of the shows were rated X...
