Re: [AFMUG] Dark Fiber Pricing

2020-04-21 Thread Adam Moffett

You pay for the total length of their fiber that you're using.

In my case I actually did want to get from Town A to B to C, and they
counted each leg as a separate IRU.  The points where we stop at a
splice case were the ends of their run.  So A-B was one billing item and
B-C was another.  They only billed for total fiber footage, not for
splice points in between.  In that case there wasn't even a setup fee to
connect the endpoints, but there was monthly maintenance.

I'm peripherally aware of another dark fiber provider that we work
with.  I didn't make the deals with them, but I think they do charge for
each splice.  In their case the leasing cost is a lot lower though, so I
think that one all works out ok.

So do you only pay for the dark fiber for the physical cable length

tail on the end of that.  Or Would the 'Connection' cost be for every
splice box they have to go through.  Say, a connection from City A to
City C, but the Fiber goes through CityB?  Is there a 'connection' in
City B, or do you have to have equipment in CityB.

In my experience you pay a recurring maintenance fee to cover repairs

You don't get to access their cases, so you leave them a pigtail and
they splice it into their system.  Often you pay each time you need
them to make a connection for you (hopefully just the once).

I'm not in the dark fiber game, but what do you mean by 'per-event'

on the ends of the fiber.

Those seem like fair rates, is that all inclusive or will you also

[AFMUG] OT One month

2020-04-21 Thread chuck
The reason I say one month is this chart:

We had the start of the deaths about a month ago. If this is a “normal curve”
or a Gaussian distribution, the right half of the curve will mirror the left
half. If we had the peak on April 15, and the deaths started on Mar 15 then
they will end on May 15 if we continue with our efforts.

Just stats. You can’t argue the math. Please don’t make me go all standard

[AFMUG] OT: Dynamic Content Gripes

2020-04-21 Thread Nate Burke

It seems like I've noticed an uptick recently of slow loading dynamic
content. Like the web page will load, then like a second later,
everything rearranges on the page as more items decide to pop up. I
don't remember it being this bad before. I've had to use the FedEx site
recently, it's really bad about this.

The Youtube app on my phone now had Ad's that are bigger than half the
screen, so it will push a playing video 1/2 off the top of the screen so
it can show the entire ad below it while the video is playing.

I've been trying to explain over the phone to an older relative how to
use an Amazon FireTV box I've given her so she can watch her church
services. She has never used a computer, and barely used a VCR. She
does not inherently know what Icons on the remote mean (play/pause,
etc). Her fingers to not operate independent of her Eyes, so she has to
look at her fingers as they are doing something (why she's never been
able to figure out how to use a mouse, gets cursor lined up, looks at
hand to push mouse button, cursor moves, click does nothing). She
watches TV by typing in the channel number. So the instructions need to
be like 'Push the button with a house, then Push the bottom of the big
circle down 2 times, then push the middle of the big circle' But this
never works, as Amazon/youtube will always re-order the icons, and Since
she's not looking at the screen, she doesn't see the 'selected' icon is
changing as she is pushing buttons. (any tips on helpful explanations
for this would be appreciated)

My FireTV at home has also been pulling re-arranging the Icons after
it's started up. Just the amount of time for you to select the app you
want, and as you're clicking, they all re-arrange and you've opened the
wrong thing.

I think bottom line is I'm starting to get to old for all these
new-fangled Technogizmos. I can't imagine it getting better, only worse
from here on, as every content developer under the sun want's to have
their own interface for their content.

2020-04-21 Thread Adam Moffett

Drives me nuts too.

I've already clicked a spot, and the object I just tried to click moved
at the last moment.

Also I start typing a URL and halfway through the cursor automatically
moves to the Google search box.

Also I start typing a URL and the browser wants to auto complete
something unrelated. Especially with IP addresses.  I type in the
address bar "10.1.5.15" and the bastard fills it in as "10.1.5.154"
which I visited on another day.  I press enter after typing the "15" and
I get 154 instead.

Also picture icons.  I've gotten used to settings being either gears or
a hamburger, but everything else seems like the pictures are unrelated
to the function.  I'm sure it makes localization easier to have no
fracking words.  It's illegible to /everyone/ this way.  Very equal and
fair.

I have no solutions.  When I'm old and my mind is fraying I'll just go
sit in the rocking chair with a book and not use any of this technical
garbage.  None of it works properly any damn way. I'll forget what the
book said and read it again next week like it was brand new.  It'll be
amazing.

The Youtube app on my phone now had Ad's that are bigger than half the
screen, so it will push a playing video 1/2 off the top of the screen
so it can show the entire ad below it while the video is playing.

I've been trying to explain over the phone to an older relative how to
use an Amazon FireTV box I've given her so she can watch her church
services.  She has never used a computer, and barely used a VCR.  She
does not inherently know what Icons on the remote mean (play/pause,
etc).  Her fingers to not operate independent of her Eyes, so she has
to look at her fingers as they are doing something (why she's never
been able to figure out how to use a mouse, gets cursor lined up,
looks at hand to push mouse button, cursor moves, click does
nothing).  She watches TV by typing in the channel number.  So the
instructions need to be like 'Push the button with a house, then Push
the bottom of the big circle down 2 times, then push the middle of the
big circle'  But this never works, as Amazon/youtube will always
re-order the icons, and Since she's not looking at the screen, she
doesn't see the 'selected' icon is changing as she is pushing
buttons.  (any tips on helpful explanations for this would be
appreciated)

My FireTV at home has also been pulling re-arranging the Icons after
it's started up.  Just the amount of time for you to select the app
you want, and as you're clicking, they all re-arrange and you've
opened the wrong thing.

I think bottom line is I'm starting to get to old for all these
new-fangled Technogizmos.  I can't imagine it getting better, only
worse from here on, as every content developer under the sun want's to
have their own interface for their content.

In that case, they actually live pretty much in the middle of that city. The
city hall/PD is just down the block. My in-laws didn’t complain (they didn’t

I've been trying to explain over the phone to an older relative how to

does not inherently know what Icons on the remote mean (play/pause,

Many browsers are built on top of chromium. Chrome itself, the new

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Dynamic Content Gripes

2020-04-21 Thread Ken Hohhof
I think it's airFiber starting with FW 4.x and stuff like ac Nanostations
starting with 6.x. It's not that it won't load the page, but lots of stuff
is non functional or flaky.

Many websites are problematic in Edge, even Chromium Edge I think. Like
you'll put stuff in a shopping cart but can't check out, or you can't log in
with a username and password.

Re: [AFMUG] Need AirFiber5x

2020-04-21 Thread Mathew Howard
That's not true! The fact that it had garbage gain was just one of several
reasons why nobody bought it... it was also the size of a small house, only
supported half of the 5ghz band and used a ton of power.

I don't think there are any other true full duplex 5ghz radios out there
though, so it did have that going for it. It was a pretty impressive radio
from a technical standpoint (especially at the time), but it really wasn't
very practical.

Re: [AFMUG] Need AirFiber5x

2020-04-21 Thread Chuck Macenski
The antenna structure allows for a low-cost full duplex system. If you
don't need the sub-ms latency and full-duplex capacity, it is not the radio
for you.

That said, AF5/AF5U is a current product; the AF5X was EOLed in favor of
the AF5XHD.

I think Mike (and myself) assumed that you were talking about the AF5
because Sean posted a picture of an Airfiber5 (not X).

But yeah, I assume they just quit production of the AF5x because sales
dropped down to nothing when the HD came out.

But that does make me curious... why would you prefer the 5x over the 5xHD?

Re: [AFMUG] Need AirFiber5x

2020-04-21 Thread Mathew Howard
Ehh... the AirFiber 5x is a good radio. If it's a new link, or replacing
both ends, then the Airfiber 5xHD is generally a pretty good replacement.
The HD is better than the old 5x in some ways, and a bit worse in other
ways, but they're both good radios.

Yeah, well, that's why you keep old radios around when you replace them
with other stuff... or you can always just buy some used ones to keep as
spares. These things are by no means hard to find at this point.

As I mentioned, we are partly to blame for the shortage of chicken thighs.
Tried something new tonight. Chicken thighs stuff with Chipotle Bitchin
Sauce, bacon, and cheese. Smoked and brushed with BBQ sauce at the end.
Doesn’t produce the kind of heat of some of Jamie’s meals 😊 but had some nice
kick nonetheless. Wasn’t going to add the bacon, but wanted to do my part to
end the bacon glut, and glad I added it.

Tasty

Imma still cut you. One of our groceries had my tyson thighs today. 1.99 a
pound. That's highway robbery. I pay .99 cents. You cost me a buck a pound,
imma be needing that back so as to ensure you dont happen across a loose
stair tread. Just saying, it's always good to have insurance against those
unfortunate accidents.

Seriously though, I was giddy when a saw them, charcoal grill with a ton of
lawry's. I keep those in my fridge and eat on them all week. It's the only
reason we have summer.

I've seen some web sites that only operate with IE. More that operate
only with chrome, and some that don't operate with either.

I'm oldschool and still using noscript in my Firefox, I can't imagine
browsing the web without it.  But sometimes you just need that site that
pulls in the content from 1000 different URL's and javascript libraries.
That's the only time I use Chrome.

don't remember it being this bad before. I've had to use the FedEx
site recently, it's really bad about this.

The Youtube app on my phone now had Ad's that are bigger than half
the screen, so it will push a playing video 1/2 off the top of the
screen so it can show the entire ad below it while the video is
playing.

I've been trying to explain over the phone to an older relative how
to use an Amazon FireTV box I've given her so she can watch her
church services.  She has never used a computer, and barely used a
VCR.  She does not inherently know what Icons on the remote mean
(play/pause, etc).  Her fingers to not operate independent of her
Eyes, so she has to look at her fingers as they are doing something
(why she's never been able to figure out how to use a mouse, gets
cursor lined up, looks at hand to push mouse button, cursor moves,
click does nothing).  She watches TV by typing in the channel number.
So the instructions need to be like 'Push the button with a house,
then Push the bottom of the big circle down 2 times, then push the
middle of the big circle'  But this never works, as Amazon/youtube
will always re-order the icons, and Since she's not looking at the
screen, she doesn't see the 'selected' icon is changing as she is
pushing buttons.

I can't imagine it getting better, only
worse from here on, as every content developer under the sun want's
to have their own interface for their content.

It happened at a major firmware rev change. Maybe Firefox works, maybe

Ubiquiti really needs to realize they screwed the pooch by stopping
 production on that product.

Re: [AFMUG] Need AirFiber5x

2020-04-21 Thread Mathew Howard
If I remember correctly, latency is a bit lower on the 5X (although that
may have changed with newer firmware... I haven't checked it recently), and
it's always seemed to me that the 5x handles interference a bit better than
the 5xHD, but I could be wrong about that, since I've never actually done a
direct comparison. the HD also tends to try to run at higher modulation
than it should in some cases, and has to be manually limited to lower
modulation to work properly... I'd say the 5x just seems a bit more
consistent overall.

But yeah, the ability to run wider channels, higher modulation at lower
signal levels, lower power consumption, ethernet ports that work properly,
etc. makes the HD a much better radio overall.
