Re: Change retention policy on specific volumes

I had to freeze some past data (only... no future data) so I renamed the nodes to _xxx(where your xxx can be something like "frozen") Build a domain such as outlined below... move your nodes that require their data be frozen into that domain... then reregister the initial node name again under their normal domain. Since their existing management class won't really exist in this new domain, it will all fall under the retention grace period. To get that frozen data shifted around you can either: 1) use move nodedata to isolate it into a newly created storage pool 2) simply export the blah_xxx nodes (the unlimited domain gives you time to perform the export without the required data expiring) This all allows the node(s) to return to normal nightly processing while you deal with the frozen data. tsm: TSMSRV1>q domain unlimited f=d Policy Domain Name: UNLIMITED Activated Policy Set: STANDARD Activation Date/Time: 04/30/2005 12:29:12 Days Since Activation: 1,188 Activated Default Mgmt Class: UNLIMITED Number of Registered Nodes: 0 Description: Backup Retention (Grace Period): 9,999 Archive Retention (Grace Period): 30,000 Last Update by (administrator): x Last Update Date/Time: 04/30/2005 12:29:12 Managing profile: Changes Pending: No Active Data Pool List: tsm: TSMSRV1>q copy unlimited PolicyPolicyMgmt Copy Versions Versions Retain Retain DomainSet Name Class Group Data DataExtraOnly NameName NameExists Deleted Versions Version - - - - --- UNLIMITED ACTIVEUNLIMITED STANDARD No Limit No Limit No Limit No Lim- it UNLIMITED STANDARD UNLIMITED STANDARD No Limit No Limit No Limit No Lim- it tsm: TSMSRV1>q copy unlimited t=a PolicyPolicyMgmt CopyRetain DomainSet Name Class Group Version NameName Name - - - - UNLIMITED ACTIVEUNLIMITED STANDARD No Limit UNLIMITED STANDARD UNLIMITED STANDARD No Limit tsm: TSMSRV1> -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Haberstroh, Debbie (IT) Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 2:33 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Change retention policy on specific volumes The specific volumes are determined by a SQL query, the tapes are in the primary tapepool. I do not want to change all of the volumes on a node, only select volumes. I know that retention is determined by the management class and if you change the management class it rebinds on the next backup but I need to be able to change it on existing volumes without backing up again or changing it on all of the data. Is there any way to do this and if so, how can I accomplish this quickly. We were informed today and they want it by tomorrow. Thanks for the help. Debbie Haberstroh Server Administration
Re: lanfree backup
Read the guide: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for SAN for Windows Storage Agent User's Guide Also, the redbook: Get More Out of Your SAN with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager It will help you with this. Re: Ugrading from 5.3 to 5.5
Thanks John, you´ve helped a lot! Linux and AIX installations are quite alike. Best regards, Mario Behring [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message From: "Schneider, John" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 9:01:47 PM Subject: Re: Ugrading from 5.3 to 5.5 I can't speak to Linux from experience, but we just did a number of TSM upgrades on both Windows and AIX, and uninstalled the Server code each time, then installed the new version. Even when you uninstall the code, the server's dsmserv..opt, dsmserv.dsk, devconfig, volhist, database files, etc will all still be there. They don't get deleted by the unintall. So when the install of the new version happens, the install script will automatically upgrade the TSM database if it needs to do so, unless you have played with the defaults, and don't have the TSM server installed in the default place. Even then it is no big deal, you will just have to use the 'dsmserv upgradedb' command after the upgrade to cause the database to get updated. Consult the Admin Reference for the details of the upgradedb if you need to. Best Regards, John D. The Install Guide tells you to perform several actions prior to installing TSM 5.5, including removing completely TSM 5.3 code. The same guide however, tells you that if an older version is detected, the install script will then use the -U option from the rpm command and will upgrade the product. So, the question is, what is the best way to do this upgrade? Shoud the older code be removed prior to installation or not? There are three devices connected to the server, two IBM 3494 libraries (one is an extension) and one storage. All connected through a fibre channel switch. Any help is appreciated. Just cant change node attribute
Just cant change node attribute. though no session with node ( q sess) Why TSM server respond: The object you are attempting to access is currently in use by another session or process. Retry the action at a later time. all tsm client process on node are stopped (dsmsta, dsmc sched) no hangin process on ports tsm used TSM serv W2K3 and client AIX. All v.5.5 How can i cancel session in other ways? (canc sess dont work in this case because we dont have any number of sess for node) If restart tsm server this trouble is gone but maybe somebody knows alternative?
Re: Just cant change node attribute
When posting messages, we need to know the message number: giving us just the text deprives us of the ability to research the problem. Also include the attempted command, so that we have a better sense of the situation. One thing I would check for is the presence of a Restartable Restore: I would expect that to lock a filespace rather than a node, but lacking full context, I can't be sure of your problem there. Do Query Restore and check for that, first. Richard Simshttp://people.bu.edu/rbs/
