Exchange Surgery - Help needed.
Hi All I have a customer with a small TSM Setup on windows , DB is only 3GB. TSM is 5.3.4 Last August the legal eagles decreed that all expiration was to stop, and my predecessors did this. We are now at breaking point with a tape library that is about to burst, and finally someone (me) decided to do something about it. The majority of the data is exchange backups, with a twice a week full, four times a day incremental backup strategy. Legal has finally decided that We need to keep all backups from the earliest we have to end of August. >From end of August to mid Feb we can delete all incrementals and all full backups except the last one of every month. Now, if I had space I would rename the node move it all to its new backup

Re: Is 'Cache Migrate Files' immediate?
I thought I'd summarize the problem I had and how it was resolved. Problem: Diskpool is at 100% Util with 0% migratable, MigDelay=0, MigCont=yes, CacheMigFiles=no. Updating stgpool hi/lo threshold to 0 or issuing 'migrate stgpool' command results in ANR4972i "migration is not needed for the storage pool name". Resolution: Perform 'move data' on the disk volumes. From 'move data' help: 'When you move files from a random access volume, the server erases any cached copies of files on the volume.' After sometime the cached files are removed and the diskpool is back to 0%. There is very limited interoperability between the TSM API (upon which the TDPs are based) and the standard Backup-Archive client - and within the B/A client, only the CLI provides what interoperability there is. Chapter 4 of the API manual summarizes what cross-pollination exists. From my experimentation with the API, I know there isn't much. Archive bit: Differential Backups
Hello Everyone, I have a TSM 5.3.5.2 server running on AIX 5.3 and I am doing NAS NDMP backups. I have 1 file system that appears to be doing a full backup when a differential backup is envoked. Can anyone tell me how TSM determines if a file has been updated/created? I'm pretty sure it does NOT use the archive bit, but I just wanted to be sure. Thanks in advance! Re: Archive bit: Differential Backups
It CAN use the archive bit if its configured to (at least one of the clients I installed recently had that option in a 5.3.5 client), but most folks do not turn that on. I'm talking a Windows client that is. Now, exactly how it determines a file has changed, I'm not exactly sure about but I think it uses a combination of size, date modified time stamp, and something like a CRC check. I just can't remember all of it right now. Re: Archive bit: Differential Backups
The client does not use the archive bit for backup, but it can reset the archive bit after backing up the file (see the RESETARCHIVEATTRIBUTE option). The client manual describes by what criteria TSM's progressive incremental backup methodology considers a file changed. See chapter 4, section "Full and partial incremental backup". Other methodologies include journal-based backup and incremental-by-date (the latter being something to use more as a last resort, and should be accompanied by periodic progressive incremental backups). Re: exclude.dir .directory
In the Unix environment, it is a convention (only) that a file or directory whose name begins with a dot (period) is considered a "hidden" file. An application program may or may not observe this convention, and may or may not reveal or process such files. The 'ls' and 'rm' commands are known to observe this convention. It is not the case that the operating system or the file system in any way treats dot-lead filenames as special. Any directory traversal mechanism (e.g., the basic readdir() system call) will encounter them, and can operate on them. No TSM Unix Backup/Archive documentation mentions hidden files, or indicates that dot-lead files will be treated specially. In my years of working with the product, I've always seen it treat dot-lead file system entries the same as all other file system objects: they are backed up, and can be restored. And tests under AIX and Linux show EXCLUDE.DIR as happily excluding a dot-lead directory name as it does an ordinary name, with no special quoting necessary. Should any situation deviate from the norm, it would be something worth investigating. with a client trace if necessary. Re: Archive bit: Differential Backups
Hi Andy, Thanks for the info. but that is for a Windows client. I'm backing up this file system with the NDMP protocol. Do the same rules apply? I don't have a regular Windows client driving the backup, so I'm kind of confused on what to go by concerning the differential methodology for NDMP backups when a regular client is not used in this environment. Any ideas? Thanks again! Re: Exchange Surgery - Help needed.
Poor form to reply to my own post, but I couldn't sleep till I found a solution. Its nearly 4am now and I think I have one! Someone suggested directly to me that I could select from the backups table and run the unsupported "delete objects" command on each file. I tested that on a single file and it seemed to work, but I'm not feeling comfortable with it for the rather large number of entries I have to delete. So how about this? Its like performing surgery with the space shuttle robot arm but it might just work. Upgrade to TSM 5.5. This is necessary anyway. Set up a second TSM Server on the same box. Export the exchange data server-to-server from the old server to the new one using the fromdate/todate parameters to give me the slice of data that I need. Repeat as necessary with mergefiles on the import side. Once a slice has been copied across I can change the retentions on the old server and expire inventory to delete that slice. Well, doing a quick Google search for "ANS1351E Session rejected: All server sessions" brings up all kinds of possibliteseverything from the "MaxSessions" definition of your server to the client needing to prompt for the password, and so on. Re: Exchange Surgery - Help needed.
I haven't tried the 5.5 "fromdate" and "todate", but assuming it works as advertised on exchange data, then I don't think there is a need for an alternate server. You can just export straight to tape, then re-import later. I would also add in node renames but that is optional if you want to merge later: 1- rename node exchangehost exchangehost_Beginning-August 2- export node exchangehost_Beginning-August fromd=xxx todate=xxx other options. 3- rename node exchangehost_Beginning-August exhangehost_sept_monthend 4- export node exhangehost_sept_monthend fromd=xxx todate=xxx other options. 5- repeat for each month that you need. 6- rename the node back to "exchangehost" and set the expiration to the current desired expiration 7- import all the exports under their new node names in a new domain name If you want to merge the data, I suppose you can, but the main point was that I don't see the necessity for a new server instance. You only need to put the data under a different node name, in a separate domain with a "No Limit" copygroup. The management class needs to have the same name as the current management class. Zoltan, Thanks for your reply..Right now we are focusing in on the errors (ANS1251E and the TSM function VSS stuff) below they are the ones were most confused about. Re: Windows Clients failing with ANS1251E and other errors
Tim - The -50 return codes make me think of networking or pipe communications failure, where the former would probably be a hardware condition, and the latter could be OS congestion issues. Your initial posting contained elements suggesting that the system involved is rather busy chasing ITM and Network Associates monitoring tasks, which might be getting in the way. You might check the TSM server Activity Log, if not the Windows Event Log, to see if any allied condition evidence there. Richard Sims
backed up nodes
Hello, Is there a command I can run to get the number of nodes being backed up on tivoli? Often nodes are created and registered on tivoli but not being backed up. I would think ip address is also one of the paremeter in the select statement as at times two nodes will be sharing same ip address. Thanks for your help. 5.4 performance issues
Hi All, We recently upgraded the TSM clients on our cryus imap servers from 5.3.0.12 to 5.4.1.2 (and then 5.4.1.5), and since that upgrade, we have seen the backups of about 4.5million files in each of our 12 spools go from about 2.5 hours to approx. 4 days (had we let it run to completion). Anyone else seeing issues with 5.4.x on Solaris clients with millions of files? Other vitals: Server: 5.4.1.2 on AIX Network: GB Client OS Solaris 2.9 Filesystems are VxFS on an Hitachi 9960. We have opened a PMR with IBM, and they want to run some traces, but we have since reverted back to 5.3.0.12, and our 2.5hr backups. We need to run 5.4 to stay supported, and a minimum of 5.4.1.2 for the fix for the security issues in dsmcad, which we use for email restores on these systems. Thanks in advance for any insights anyone can provide. Steve Roder University at Buffalo ([EMAIL PROTECTED] | (716)645-3564)
Re: 5.4 performance issues
Since it didn't run to completion, can you tell, from the log, if it is backing up all files again? Or it is doing everything the same, except it is just taking longer? Hi list, How can I remove a node that still has inventory references associated to it? "ANR2152E REMOVE NODE: Inventory references still exist for node X" Mario Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your home page. http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

Re: 5.4 performance issues
As an observer, I have to wonder what the heck happened in the design, development and testing of 5.4. If you can't do a trace, a cheap substitute is to sample what's going on with Query SEssion. and Select * From Sessions. The Select is helpful in showing data progress down to the byte level, plus the in progress verb, for a better sense of what's going on. The session state can help identify where the delay is. You might try an artificial test, with a single, very large file, then a large set of small files, to see if basic transmission speed or transaction rate is the problem. A foul-up in TCP Window Size could be the impediment. If you have the time, try a few different key settings and see if an affector stands out. Richard Sims
Re: 5.4 performance issues
IBM has had several customers reporting this performance issue after upgrading to level 5.4. APAR IC53531 was originally opened for this for the NetWare platform only. We are now also seeing the same issue for this APAR for customers on UNIX platforms as well. (However, this APAR does not apply to Windows platforms.) For Netware, the interim fix is 5.4.1.4. I do not have the date for the UNIX platforms yet. Re: 5.4 performance issues
Dave, Does this problem also exist in v5.5 Unix clients? Will this problem also affect MacOS X clients (since they are Unix-based)?
