Destroy Data on 3590 Tapes

I've another question. We've got two new 3584 Libraries with 3592 Drives.
Our boss want to sell the old Library 3494 with the all 3590 Tapes (about
2300). For this reason we've to destory the data on this tapes. The Library is
attached via SCSI to our AIX TSM Server (Version 5.2.8.0). Does anyone know how
we can realize this matter?

We are at a loss how we can do destorying 2300 Tapes with minor effort.

If your site intends to discard the tapes, have a commercial "data
grater" service crunch them to pieces.

If you want to erase the tapes to transfer ownership, see "Tape,
erase" in ADSM QuickFacts. There you would perform a batch job to
mount, erase, and unmount each one - a process that can take a long
time. (Modern tapes cannot be quickly degaussed because of servo
tracks.)

New TS3310 Tape Library

2007-04-18 Thread adrian_compton
Hi

I have just installed a new TS3310 5U Library with a 9U Expansion slot.
I have configured and have it working very nicely.

One question though.

I am performing a migrate from the old STG's to NEW STG's I have
created, using the nextstg option on the old stg's. The new lib has a
different devclass to the old one.

Once the migration has taken place, I then delete the old STG, and
rename the new one to the old. (Helps not having to change all my
scripts to the new name!)

1. Is this the best way to do this?
2. What do I do with my old Copy Pool?
3. Should I just leave it and start using a new one?
4. Will it eventually no longer have any volumes associated when
expiration, reclamation etc have run through it

Any pointers etc will be greatly appreciated.

2007-04-18 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Try starting the backup-archive client GUI, then click the "Backup"
button. Look under the local drives. Does your new file system appear
there?

Using the command line client, run:

   dsmc q opt domain

Does the file system appear there?

Check your options file AND client option set on the server to see if
there is a DOMAIN setting that spells out drives to back up. It is
possible you have a DOMAIN setting (maybe on the server client option set)
that explicitly lists file systems to back up, in which case your new file
system will not automatically be added.

Also check the schedule definition to see if it explicitly mentions file
systems to back up (in the OBJECTS field), in which case the new file
system is probably not there.

Re: BAClient doesn't know my new partition is there!

2007-04-18 Thread Angus Macdonald
I only have a single cloptset configured to support a number of W2K3
fileservers (of which this is one). It has exclusions for a number of specific
files and folders but nothing at the drive letter level and nothing that should
affect the folder in question.

However, I've uncovered a little .cmd file that is run every night. It contains

dsmc incremental c: g: j: k:

which makes me suspect this isn't a recent problem! I've added my new partition
to the end of the command-line so we'll see what happens tonight.

Thinking of the technote provided by Richad Sims (Thanks!!) don't you
think that the segment size for disk stgpool is very small ¿? 4KB ¿?

If I have a RAID 5 (4+1 volumes), configured with 256 KBsegment size, am
I not wasting space... ¿?

If one client is doing backup, the backup(objects) are coming across the
lan and received by the ethernet adapter of the TSM server. These
objects are going to main memory of the TSM server (processed), and
after they are flushed to disk in segments more big than 4 KB (perhaps
256 KB) ¿? or it goes directly to disk without passing first to memory ¿?

So does TSM have a multiplier like oracle db to read more blocks
sequentially ¿?

If I have large I/O requests it seems to me that 4KB for blocksize is
very small... or perhaps am I forgetting something about TSM
functionality... some tuning parameters ¿?

Does TSM do a caching or something previous to write to disk and tape ¿?

Thanks In Advance !!

Ibán.

Add your new drive to the DOMAIN statement of your option file

DOMAIN C: D: E:

I think it is not considered a local drive, that's why it is not being

How many tapes are in the TAPEPOOL1 storage pool? You have a MAXSCRATCH of 250.
If you have 250...then that's your issue. Try
updating the stgpool to a higher MAXSCRATCH= value.

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM VOLUMES WHERE STGPOOL_NAME='TAPEPOOL1'

Have you recycled the scheduler on the client? That's required to pick up
any changes to the configuration files.

Re: BAClient doesn't know my new partition is there!

2007-04-18 Thread William Boyer
Why not just take out ALL the DOMAIN lines from your DSM.OPT and let it default
to ALL-LOCAL. Which will get you all local drives
(now and in the future!) plus the systemstate, systemservices. If there's a
specific drive you DON'T want as part of your domain,
it's easier to list what you don't want (and let it remain dynamic for whey you
add/remove drives) thatn to list what you want and
always have to make changes.

DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL -E:

To do everything but the E: drive. If you're specifying drive letters to
INCLUDE, you lose the dynamic ability of the ALL-LOCAL.

David -

We lack the context of what was going on in the server when the error
appeared, or whether the operation was reattempted and consistently
failed each time. It may be that the conditions described in APAR
IC52341 were in force.

Also, while the numbers you cite above make it appear that there is a
68 tape margin, the MAXSCRatch value is usually an arbitrary number,
and so the perceived margin may not actually exist in the library,
relative to its libvolumes complement. Whereas you are using node
collocation, the rules as listed under "How the Server Selects
Volumes with Collocation Enabled" in the Admin Guide manual apply;
and whereas you have lots of volumes in Filling state and low
utilization, then TSM should have been able to continue writing
without such an error condition. So something else is going on that
needs investigation, where some answers may be found by poring over
the Activity Log.

One seemingly obvious thing you should verify is that BACKUPPOOL
actually does point to TAPEPOOL1 as its next storage pool. (It sure
would be nice if the TSM error message said what pool was in issue.)

2007-04-18 Thread Prather, Wanda
>From your note below, you can back up the file manually using the GUI, but the
>scheduler doesn't see it, right?
I've seen that happen for 2 additional reasons than those mentioned eariler in
this thread.

1) The scheduler doesn't have permissions to the root of E:.

Remember that the scheduler is running under a different account than when you
are logged in manually.
Most people let the scheduler run under the SYSTEM account (Windows scheduler
properties, logon tab).
One thing you could try is changing the scheduler properties so that it runs
under YOUR id temporarily, see if you get different results.

2) Your Windows OS doesnt' see that drive as a local drive.

I have seen that happen occasionally, depending on your version of Windows and
what external SAN hardware you are using (which gets HBA's & drivers involved).
In that case, you can try backing it up as a network drive, by including a
DOMAIN statement with the fully-qualified UNC name, like you did for IMAGE:

DOMAIN "\\hostname\d$"

In this case, you definitely have to have the scheduler running under a
network-capable account, not just "system".

Also:

INCLUDE.BACKUP "*:\ECG\*"
This gets all ECG folders on all drives, THAT ARE IN THE ROOT of the drive.
If you want to get ALL folders named ECG, change it to:

INCLUDE.BACKUP "*.\ECG\...\*"

Hope some of that helps!

Move NodeData CollocGroup=

2007-04-18 Thread Nick Laflamme

We're moving data from un-collocated storage groups to storage groups
that will be collocated by group (OK, so we're not quite leading edge!).
We had a system before of small storage pools that mimicked collocation
by groups, so any particular group's data is grouped tightly.

If I use "MOVE NODEDATA COLLOCGROUP=" how clever is TSM in how it copies
data from the current tapes? Will it take all the data from a tape in
one pass, or will it make one pass per tape per node?

Thanks,
Nick

Subject: [ADSM-L] New TS3310 Tape Library

Hi

I have just installed a new TS3310 5U Library with a 9U Expansion slot.
I have configured and have it working very nicely.

One question though.

Actually four questions

I am performing a migrate from the old STG's to NEW STG's I have
created, using the nextstg option on the old stg's. The new lib has a
different devclass to the old one.

Once the migration has taken place, I then delete the old STG, and
rename the new one to the old. (Helps not having to change all my
scripts to the new name!)

1. Is this the best way to do this?

Yes! Makes good sense to me.

2. What do I do with my old Copy Pool?

Depends: is the old library still available? If so, maybe make that
your DR library and keep using it. If not, then point the drpool
devclass at the new library and start creating dr tapes in the new
library. Keep the old tapes until they die a natural death. No point
creating a new dr pool.

3. Should I just leave it and start using a new one?

Yes.

4. Will it eventually no longer have any volumes associated when
expiration, reclamation etc have run through it

Yes!

Any pointers etc will be greatly appreciated.

Yep... Also the maxScr does play a role, you may have a diff in max scr
between used and allocated that still might be tooo small as a whole for
the amoutn of data you are trying to migrate. ie 100 Tapes @ 100 GB = 1TB
, but you are trying to mugrate 2 TB...

Yep... Also the maxScr does play a role, you may have a diff in max scr
between used and allocated that still might be tooo small as a whole for
the amoutn of data you are trying to migrate. ie 100 Tapes @ 100 GB = 1TB
, but you are trying to mugrate 2 TB...

storage pool question

2007-04-18 Thread Michael Read
I am wanting to eliminate some of our current storage pools. I think I
know what I need to verify before deleting things, but can someone
double check my thoughts below?

-- "query stgpool" shows that Percent Utilized is 0.0
-- there are no mgmtclasses / copygroups pointing to that stgpool
-- that stgpool is not a destination for another stgpool's "NEXTSTGPOOL"

These three things tell me that I don't have any data currently in the
storage pool, and that there is nothing left pointing to that storage
pool that will error out if I no longer have said stgpool.

Is this correct, or are there other places that specify that certain
items go to specific storage pools?

thanks in advance,

Mike

Michael -

I would, some weeks ahead of time, change the stgpool's Access to
Readonly, with no Nextstgpool, and see if any complaints or issues
arise. This is one more step to help assure that the stgpool is
truly obsolete.

Depending on how paranoid (or how trusting) you are, some tape vendors
will buy back used 3590 tapes, erase/overwrite/test/certify them to be
resold used, physically destroy the ones that don't pass muster, and
provide documentation/assurance of their process in writing.
