TSM 5.3 Technical Guide redbook available

2004-12-20 Thread Richard Sims
Just so everyone's aware...
The TSM 5.3 Technical Guide redbook is available, in draft form:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg246638.html
To new participants: The Technical Guide redbook is the meaty
summary of new features in each TSM release, and is "must"
reading for best understanding of the product.
Note: - There is no 5.2 Technical Guide - an omission in the series.
The preface in this 5.3 guide says that this guide covers
 things new since 5.1.
   - The TSM SQL doc which used to be a staple in the
appendix has been discontinued in the guide.
Our thanks to IBM and the non-IBMers who took part in the residency
to produce this valuable guide. Click in the Rating area of the web
page to indicate your appreciation for this guide, and keep them
coming.

Re: Stuck in ISC install process for 5.3.0.0

2004-12-20 Thread Rainer Tammer
Hello,
this is the wrong log file. You could find details about the error in
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ISCRuntimeInstall.log .
If you want to do a uninstall read carefully the README.INSTALL (last
section).
Do exactely what is written in this section. (If you do not follow the
instructions all further installations will fail !!).
 README.INSTALL --

Manually uninstalling the Integrated Solutions Console:

If the install program fails or you are unable to uninstall with the
wizard,
you can try to manually remove the Integrated Solutions Console runtime and
then install again. To manually remove the console runtime, perform the
following steps:
 1. Open a command window or go to a command prompt.
 2. Stop the console server (which is the application server named
ISC_Portal).
 o UNIX:
   /PortalServer/bin/stopISC.sh ISC_Portal
 o Windows:
   \PortalServer\bin\stopISC.bat ISC_Portal
 3. Stop the application server named server1 by issuing one of the
 following commands:
o For installations on AIX, Linux, and Solaris systems, issue the
following command (on a single line):
   /AppServer/bin/stopServer.sh server1 -user
application_server_administrator -password
application_server_password
o For installations on Windows systems, issue the
following command (on a single line):
   \AppServer\bin\stopServer.bat server1 -user
 application_server_administrator -password
application_server_password
 where:
is the root directory for your
   Integrated Solutions Console runtime installation.
 4. To clean the system temporary directory, perform the following steps:
 1. Change to the system temporary directory. The temporary directory
is the value of the operating system variable %TEMP% on Windows
systems and /tmp on the other systems.
 2. Save a copy of the following files in the temporary directory:
 o ISCRuntimeInstall.log
 o ISCRuntime.rsp
 o ISCRuntimeUninstall.log
o All of the Portal*.log files
 3. In the temporary directory, delete all of the files and the
directories that begin with the string ISC (such as
ISCRuntime.rsp,
ISC_TEMP, ISCToolkitInstall.log) and all files that begin with
the
string Portal (such as PortalInit.log and PortalSetupWAS.log).
 5. To clean the registry that InstallShield for Multiplatforms uses:
 1. Locate the file vpd.properties.
o On AIX, Linux, and Solaris systems, search for the file. There
might be multiple vpd.properties files on an AIX system. If
there
are multiple copies, be sure to edit all copies of the file
when
   you perform the edit step.
o On Windows systems, search the system directory
   (such as C:\WINNT\vpd.properties).
 2. Save a copy of the vpd.properties file.
 3. Use a text editor to open the vpd.properties file. Use an
editor that
does not wrap lines so that you can easily isolate single
lines for
removal. Setting the editor to use a monospace font (for example,
Courier) will make it easier to see the file structure.
 4. Delete each line that refers to the path for the root
directory of
the console runtime. If there are no remaining lines in
vpd.properties, leave the file empty or delete it.
NOTE: On AIX the product registry contains entries regarding the
installation, which must be manually removed. To remove
those entries run vpddel. Run lslpp -L to obtain a list of
everything in the product registry. Locate the enteries for
that contain the installation directory of the Integrated
Solutions
Console. Using the output from the command, construct a
vpddel command
   for each entry. For example,
   vpddel -c integratedSolutionsConsole -v 5.0.2.0 -D /isc
where the information for parameters is from the output of
lslpp -L.
See AIX documentation for more information on the usage of
lslpp and
   vpddel.
 6. Perform one of the following steps to manually disable automatic
restart at reboot of the console and console server:
o For AIX, Linux, and Solaris systems: Edit the operating system file
/etc/inittab to remove the following line:
   iscn:23:boot:/PortalServer/bin/startISC.sh ISC_Portal
ISCUSER ISCPASS
   where:
is the root directory for your
 Integrated Solutions Console runtime installation.
o For Windows systems, issue the following commands,
   each on a single line:
 \AppServer\bin\wasservice.exe -remove
   "ISC Runtime Service"
 \PortalServer\ISCEclipse\EclipseSvc.exe -delete
   "ISC Help Serv

What files to exclude for a novell client using CAI eTrust

2004-12-20 Thread Timothy Hughes
One of our Novell clients has informed me that they have CAI eTrust 7.1

scanning files as they are being backed up. He tried to configure eTrust
to
not scan files accessed by Tivoli (by entering NLM names and process
names
as exclusions) but that has not worked.

Anyone ever have this problem? If so What should we exclude in the
DSM.opt file.

Thanks for any help, advice suggestions!

Geoff,

You can also get that message when the tape is in use. I have a server
that hosts a lot of RMAN logsweeps going straight to tape, and our "Backup

Sub-File Backup - 2 GB Limit

2004-12-20 Thread Rushforth, Tim
Hi:

Just curious if anyone knows if this limit has changed or will change in
the future?

We have some users asking about it.

Thanks,

Tim Rushforth

Forum: ADSM.ORG - ADSM / TSM Mailing List Archive

Tim,

Actually, two different behaviors based on two-different problems.
Files
that start less then 2 GB but grow > 2 GB will continue to use subfile
backup as long as the other requirements for the base file (i.e., the
file
on the client cache) is still valid. The limiting factor here is that
there is only 32-bit support in the differencing subsystem that we are
using. We chose 2 GB on the onset (instead of 4 GB) as the limit to
avoid
any possible boundary problems near the 32-bit addressing limit and also
because this technology was aimed at the mobile market (read: who is
going
to have files on their laptops > 2 GB). I understand that there are
several shops that use this technology beyond the laptop environment.
Ultimately, the solution is to have a 64-bit subsystem in place so that
we
can go beyond 4 GB. I suggest a requirement to Tivoli if this is
important to your shop.

The low-end limit (1024 bytes) was due to some strange behavior with
really small files, e.g., if a file started out at 5 k and then was
truncated to 8 bytes. The solution was to just send the entire file if
the file fell below the 1k threshold. We can get away with resending
these small files because ... they are small files! It is probably a
wash
to resend or to try to correctly send a delta file in this case.

Hope this helps.

Windows Restore error

2004-12-20 Thread Adams, Matt (US - Hermitage)
Windows Client version - 5.2.0.3 running on W2K Advanced Server- SP4
TSM Server- AIX v5.2 and TSM version 5.2.3.1

Has anyone experienced this during a restore of a Windows client?

ANSE ntrc.cpp(890): Received Win32 RC 1450 from pkReplaceOnReboot():
MoveFileEx

I have seen several posts
http://msgs.adsm.org/cgi-bin/get/adsm0405/200/1.html that reference
similar issues and "IC38129: Restore of hidden files produces ANSE
ntrc.cpp(890): Received Win32 RC 87 from pkReplaceOnReboot():
MoveFileEx"

But our situation is a little different in that the the files are not
hidden or from a network share that IC38129 references. However it
still could be a Windows memory issue as the posts from
http://msgs.adsm.org/cgi-bin/get/adsm0405/200/1.html refer to.

As anyone had a similar situation? The restore gets to about 500K files
restored, then begins pop up messages and the error message:

"ANSE ntrc.cpp(890): Received Win32 RC 87 from pkReplaceOnReboot():
MoveFileEx"

Please use the online resources at your disposal.

Going to www.ibm.com and putting 'pkReplaceOnReboot' (without the
quotes) in the search text bar comes up with three hits. The third one
on my list (the one with 'APARs Fixed in TSM Client V5.2 fix pack 2
(5.2.2) Maintenance' in the heading) describes IC38129, which is fixed
by going to version 5.2.2 of the Windows client.

Re: Windows Restore error

2004-12-20 Thread Adams, Matt (US - Hermitage)
Thanks Mark...

True... But IC38129 refers to a restore from a network share. This
doesn't apply in our scenario.

I am not saying that going to 5.2.2.x may not correct it, but the
description of the APAR does not fit the situation we are encountering.

We can't reproduce the error given the description in IC38129. Our
situation may be entirely a Windows memory issue.

We are working to try and reproduce the restore environment that caused
the error.

Matt

information you are now receiving.

Flash 10254 Text:

Abstract: Users can view the server console without authentication with
  the server.

Problem: Users can view the server console without authentication with the
 server.

Who is Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager servers prior to version 5.1.8.0
 and 5.2.1.2 on all platforms.

Recommendation: Update the server to the patch or PTF level which includes
APAR IC37554 for your server version when it is available. This APAR is
included in 5.1.8.0 and 5.2.1.2 (all supported server platforms), 4.2.4.2
for MVS, and 3.1.2.111 for VM. VM customers will need to call IBM for the
password to the FTP site as the password in the previous README is no
 longer correct.

Conclusion: Under limited circumstance, the server may allow a user to
view the server console without requesting user's credentials. Please
follow the above recommendations to protect your server.

information you are now receiving.

Flash 10254 Text:

Abstract: Users can view the server console without authentication
with
  the server.

Problem: Users can view the server console without authentication with
the
 server.

Who is Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager servers prior to version
5.1.8.0
 and 5.2.1.2 on all platforms.

Recommendation: Update the server to the patch or PTF level which
includes
APAR IC37554 for your server version when it is available. This APAR is
included in 5.1.8.0 and 5.2.1.2 (all supported server platforms),
4.2.4.2
for MVS, and 3.1.2.111 for VM. VM customers will need to call IBM for
the
password to the FTP site as the password in the previous README is no
 longer correct.

Conclusion: Under limited circumstance, the server may allow a user to
view the server console without requesting user's credentials. Please
follow the above recommendations to protect your server.

Does PreScheduleCmd work with Archives?

2004-12-20 Thread Tab Trepagnier
TSM Server 5.1.9.0 on AIX 5.2
TSM Client 5.1.6.0 on Windows 2000 SP4

I'm trying to launch a database archive job with a PreScheduleCmd option
included in the OPT file. This is a special OPT file that is specified as
an option on the schedule command line:

 Action: Archive
Options: -optfile=C:\Progra~1\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsm2.opt
-archmc=archtemp -subdir=yes

I see no evidence that the script file referenced in the OPT file is ever
being executed. This is the option:

 PRESCHEDULECMD 'cmd.exe /c "d:\Oracle\database\idevhotbackup.cmd"
'

On a different server that also uses the PreScheduleCmd option, I get a
line in the dsmsched.log showing its execution:

 12/20/2004 02:11:54
Executing Operating System command or script:
cmd.exe /c "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\BackupDB.cmd"
12/20/2004 02:18:33 Finished command. Return code is: 0

However, on the node in question, the dsmsched.log contains no such line.
It appears that it didn't even TRY to run the specified script.

Permissions look OK so it's not an NT permissions thing. The syntax for
calling the scripts are the same on both servers.

There is nothing that I can see in the Windows client manual that says
that option is valid for backups only, so it should work for archives too.
Is that really the case, or am I expecting TSM to do something that it
can't?

Thanks in advance.

did not have the plastic mount tab inserted properly in the tape so I don't

The problem is that OPTFILE is not a valid option in the schedule
definition. You can, however, include the PRESCHEDULECMD option in the
schedule definition.

Re: Does PreScheduleCmd work with Archives?

2004-12-20 Thread Tab Trepagnier
Andy,

Thanks VERY much for that info.

I assume the syntax in the command line is the same as in the OPT file
plus leading dash:

-PRESCHEDULECMD 'cmd.exe /c "d:\Oracle\database\idevhotbackup.cmd" '

Is that correct?

Thanks again.

Re: Novell backup file problem

2004-12-20 Thread Troy Frank
Since all the files seem to be from the same user, the first thing I'd
check is that the user is actually logging out at the end of the day.
It appears that the user has a roaming profile stored on the network,
he's not logging out, and it's causing files in his profile to stay
locked.

Re: Tapes unavailable message

The more modern form of this message, as reflected in the 5.2.2 Messages manual, is more illuminating.
It would be helpful if the posting included contextual information, such as the library type and drive type.

>ANR8945W Scratch volume mount failed .
>ANR1404W Scratch volume mount request denied - mount failed.
>ANR1021W Migration process 12403 terminated for storage pool NT_DPOOL -

I would suspect a problem with the library. Check the AIX Error Log, which may have problem indications. Do 'show library' and get a better sense of status. Attempt to mount one of the problem volumes using the mtlib command or equivalent. Physically inspect the library and drives for problems, in particular looking for tapes stuck in drives. If no indications of real hardware problems, restart the TSM server to see if it's a latched status problem which thus clears.

Hi there,

More info is needed.

* What are the messages in your activity log?
* What OS is it attached too? If AIX, check the errpt. If Windows check
your event viewer.
* How long do they work for after you make them available again? Do they
break right away as soon as they use a tape, or it is specific tape(s)
causing the issue. Bad Tapes can cause weird things to happen.
* What kind of drives are they, and what kind of library are they in?

Lots of things can cause a drive to go off-line.
