Windows rights

2004-11-24 Thread Steve Harris
Hello all.

I'm currently trying to work out the security implications and set up for TSM
on the windows platform.

We are going to install 20 or so major TSM servers and 50 or more minor ones.
The organization is best characterized as a loose confederation of warring
tribes, with each of the 20 major sites having a semi autonomous IT
function, and each wants to protect it turf.

So, the people in the biggest datacentre, who will provide TSM 3rd level
support, are insisting the the windows servers in the field are locked down and
completely managed from a central point.

The regional people are expecting to have admin rights on the windows servers.

Now we are talking Windows 2003 Standard edition here. The central guys would
have us use AD and the regional guys would have us use NDS.

The TSM policies and security will be distributed from a central TSM management
server, so that's not the issue.

Thanks for listening so far. What I would like to know is - what rights over
the Windows box do you give to your local administrators if any? What is the
impact of them having no rights whatever on the server? (the only thing I've
been able to find is the ability to label tapes which either needs TSM "system"
level access or can be run as a utility from the local machine). How do NDS
shops deal with the leakage of windows admin rights to multiple people?

Many thanks.

Steve

2004-11-24 Thread Bill Dourado
Hello All,

On one client backups I get the following msg:-

ANS1802E Incremental backup of '\\fs2\f$' finished with 50 failure.

Preceding this msg. I get a ANS1228E & a ANS4037E for each "File

I checked these "File skipped" and they are all subdirectories rather than
application files.

I am trying to understand why I am getting these msgs. ?

How do I display a list of Tivoli archives? (Clarification)

2004-11-24 Thread Davis Adrian
To clarify: In my original question the work "backup" in the first sentence
should be interpreted in the generic sense: To make a copy of some data for
distaster recovery or any other purpose where data may need to be accessed
at a later date (When the original data may possibly have been altered or
deleted).

Where variations of the word archive appear, this should be interpreted as a
Tivoli Archive created using the "dsmc archive" command.

Sorry for the confusion.

Regards,
   =Adrian=

Adrian - You should clarify your question to the List, as "backup" means
the 'dsmc backup' operation, whereas "archive" means 'dsmc
archive'.
In Backup, there are no Descriptions.

Hi there,

For several Oracle 9i databases, we use RMAN and TSM for Databases to
store the backups in TSM.

This works fine. However, both database backups and archivelog
backups go to the same storagepool. The database is about
400 GB large, and this goes straight to tape. Archivelog
backups are much smaller, perhaps 1 GB each time. Archivelog
backups occur several times each day. These also go directly
to tape.

What this means is that one drive is occupied most of the time
by the archivelog backups. This is inconvenient; the drive could be
put to better use.

How I think this problem could be solved:

 * create a disk stgpool, say RMAN_DISK_POOL
 * create a tape stgpool, say RMAN_TAPE_POOL
 * define the MAXSIZE parameter for RMAN_DISK_POOL
 * define the NEXTSTGPOOL paramater for RMAN_DISK_POOL to point to
   RMAN_TAPE_POOL
 * point RMAN to RMAN_DISK_POOL

Will this work? Is there perhaps a better way of solving this problem?
(Is it even a problem at all?)

A possible problem with this setup might be that the TSM server
doesn't know the size of an RMAN-backup ahead of time, so
everything goes to RMAN_DISK_POOL and things break when too large
'files' end up in RMAN_DISK_POOL. (In our setup, the backup piece
size is quite large, much larger than the typical archivelog
backup. Choosing a correct value for MAXSIZE wouldn't be too
difficult.)

Thanks,

We just went through thiswe considered the approach that you
proposed below, it turned out to be more work than we needed to do. The
following is what we ended up doing:

Stanza in dsm.sys:
SErvername DP
   COMMmethod TCPip
   TCPPort port#
   TCPServeraddress server address
   nfstimeout 120
   txnbytelimit 25600
   tcpbuffsize 512
   tcpwindowsize64
   resourceutilization 5
   largecommbuffers yes
   commrestartduration 480
   commrestartinterval 120
   inclexcl
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/dsm_dp.inclexcl
   schedlogname
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/dsmsched_dp.log
   errorlogname
/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/dsmerror_dp.log
   schedmodeprompted
   passwordaccess prompt
   schedlogretention10 d
   ERRORLOGRetention 10 d

Dsm.opt in tdp directory:
Servername dp

Dsm_dp.inclexcl in tdp directory:
INCLUDE /adsmorc/.../DB* DBTAPE_TDPNC (or RMAN_TAPE_POOL)
INCLUDE /adsmorc/.../LOG* DBDISK_TDPNC (or RMAN_DISK_POOL)

You will need the dba to specify a naming convention so all database
files start with DB and all log files start with LOG. Hope this
helps..we struggled with the right strategy for a while. Let me
know if you have any questions.

Ingrid

Thanks! This is a much more elegant solution. I knew that
INCLUDE/EXCLUDE statements were possible with TDP for Oracle,
but apparently I wasn't clever enough to think of them. :-)

ANR0781E

2004-11-24 Thread Thomas Denier
I have been attempting to run a server to server 'export node' from
a 5.1.7.2 server under z/OS to a 5.2.2.0 server under zSeries Linux.
I did a number of successful exports using this pair of servers a couple
of months ago, but attempts yesterday and today have consistently
failed with message ANR0781E on the z/OS server. I have found no evidence
that the Linux server was contacted at all. Each failure leaves behind an
administrative session with 'Memory IPC' listed as the communications
method and a status of 'Idle wait'. These sessions do not respond to
'cancel session' commands. Both CommTimeOut and IdleTimeOut are set at
five hours, and some of these sessions have by now been in idle wait
status for over 20 hours. I have tried reseting the server password
using a 'set serverpassword' command at the Linux end and an 'update
server' command at the z/OS end. This did not fix the problem. I have
already placed a call to IBM.

Other than the fact that it won't work, no.

Solaris filesystem structures are radically different than JFS (or JFS2)
filesystem structures used by AIX. Files are built in different ways,
and are not movable in that way from one OS to another. (Although I have
seen a demonstration of restoring AIX files to a Linux system--I have no
details on the process, however.)

Why not just create an NFS connection and move/copy the files?

There is no such thing as "inactive" archives. They are either there, or
they're not.

We have a similar issue. PMR 72319 in progress with tech support.

We are trying to read backupset file which is about 12GB in size on
Netware volume. It looks like that any size less than 4GB works OK, but
if I create backupset larger than 4GB and move it to Netware volume it
doesn't work.

Trace file sent to support; waiting for answer.

Not much of a help; but just for you to feel that you are not the only

Re: Remote Backups....

2004-11-24 Thread Joe Crnjanski
-Use compression

-Use sub-file backup. (doesn't work on files larger than 2GB; otherwise
enormous improvements)

-Encryption doesn't hurt if you are moving the data over public network
(Internet)- will be improved in TSM 5.3

-Don't backup system object every day (around 200MB-300MB). Make
additional schedule for system object and C drive (maybe on weekends)

-Choose carefully what you need to backup (include/exclude)

Fellow TSM administrators:

My company is currently looking at backing up approximately 40 NT
servers at our remote locations, back to our local data center. Each
location has around 10gb - 40gb of storage, and very minimal daily
change activity on the files. Some of the locations are 256k data
lines, and some are t1 lines.

Does anyone have a list of best practices? What are some of the options
that you have found to improve the process of remote backups via TSM to
a central location. Any help and input that you can provide is much
appreciated.

perfect!

in addition to this points, do make some planning & tests for restore.
Basically, your problem is full restore.
Either you can afford to wait long enoung to restore over remote line,
(learning about "restart restore" may be important)
or produce backup sets and send them per post to the remote location.

best regards

For the parameter TDPO_FS, the documentation suggests that you set up

by commas? Can anyone send me a copy of their tdpo.opt file?
