Windows rights
Hello all. I'm currently trying to work out the security implications and set up for TSM on the windows platform. We are going to install 20 or so major TSM servers and 50 or more minor ones. The organization is best characterized as a loose confederation of warring tribes, with each of the 20 major sites having a semi autonomous IT function, and each wants to protect it turf. So, the people in the biggest datacentre, who will provide TSM 3rd level support, are insisting the the windows servers in the field are locked down and completely managed from a central point. The regional people are expecting to have admin rights on the windows servers. Now we are talking Windows 2003 Standard edition here. The central guys would have us use AD and the regional guys would have us use NDS. The TSM policies and security will be distributed from a central TSM management server, so that's not the issue. Thanks for listening so far. What I would like to know is - what rights over the Windows box do you give to your local administrators if any? What is the impact of them having no rights whatever on the server? (the only thing I've been able to find is the ability to label tapes which either needs TSM "system" level access or can be run as a utility from the local machine). How do NDS shops deal with the leakage of windows admin rights to multiple people? Many thanks. How do I display a list of Tivoli archives?
We are implementing Tivoli to backup our Unix machines. I want (from a client) to be able to display a list of archives (The descriptions) which the client has created using the command line (Not GUI). The only commands/options I can find related to this display a list of files which have been archived, whereas all I want is a list of the archive descriptions. Can anybody help? How do I display a list of Tivoli archives? (Clarification)
To clarify: In my original question the work "backup" in the first sentence should be interpreted in the generic sense: To make a copy of some data for distaster recovery or any other purpose where data may need to be accessed at a later date (When the original data may possibly have been altered or deleted). Where variations of the word archive appear, this should be interpreted as a Tivoli Archive created using the "dsmc archive" command. Sorry for the confusion. Regards, =Adrian= #=# Adrian - You should clarify your question to the List, as "backup" means the 'dsmc backup' operation, whereas "archive" means 'dsmc archive'. In Backup, there are no Descriptions. Richard Sims On Nov 24, 2004, at 7:08 AM, Davis Adrian wrote: > We are implementing Tivoli to backup our Unix machines. In previous 4.x versions to restore the TSM DB you had to set library to Manual in the Device config. Its been quite a while since I've had to restore a TSM DB (Thank Goodness). Different stgpool for RMAN archivelogs and datafile backups?
Hi there, For several Oracle 9i databases, we use RMAN and TSM for Databases to store the backups in TSM. This works fine. However, both database backups and archivelog backups go to the same storagepool. The database is about 400 GB large, and this goes straight to tape. Archivelog backups are much smaller, perhaps 1 GB each time. Archivelog backups occur several times each day. These also go directly to tape. What this means is that one drive is occupied most of the time by the archivelog backups. This is inconvenient; the drive could be put to better use. How I think this problem could be solved: * create a disk stgpool, say RMAN_DISK_POOL * create a tape stgpool, say RMAN_TAPE_POOL * define the MAXSIZE parameter for RMAN_DISK_POOL * define the NEXTSTGPOOL paramater for RMAN_DISK_POOL to point to RMAN_TAPE_POOL * point RMAN to RMAN_DISK_POOL Will this work? Is there perhaps a better way of solving this problem? (Is it even a problem at all?) A possible problem with this setup might be that the TSM server doesn't know the size of an RMAN-backup ahead of time, so everything goes to RMAN_DISK_POOL and things break when too large 'files' end up in RMAN_DISK_POOL. (In our setup, the backup piece size is quite large, much larger than the typical archivelog backup. Choosing a correct value for MAXSIZE wouldn't be too difficult.) Thanks, -- Jurjen Oskam

We just went through thiswe considered the approach that you proposed below, it turned out to be more work than we needed to do. Hope this helps..we struggled with the right strategy for a while. Let me know if you have any questions. ANR0781E
I have been attempting to run a server to server 'export node' from a 5.1.7.2 server under z/OS to a 5.2.2.0 server under zSeries Linux. I did a number of successful exports using this pair of servers a couple of months ago, but attempts yesterday and today have consistently failed with message ANR0781E on the z/OS server. I have found no evidence that the Linux server was contacted at all. Each failure leaves behind an administrative session with 'Memory IPC' listed as the communications method and a status of 'Idle wait'. These sessions do not respond to 'cancel session' commands. Both CommTimeOut and IdleTimeOut are set at five hours, and some of these sessions have by now been in idle wait status for over 20 hours. I have tried reseting the server password using a 'set serverpassword' command at the Linux end and an 'update server' command at the z/OS end. This did not fix the problem. I have already placed a call to IBM.
Re: REstore of Backupset from AIX host to SOLARIS host
From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Aftab Choudhry >I need to move data from an AIX filesystem (110GB) to a SUN >system. I am thinking of creating a backupset of the >filespace, and restoring it on target host. Anything to worry about? Other than the fact that it won't work, no. Solaris filesystem structures are radically different than JFS (or JFS2) filesystem structures used by AIX. Files are built in different ways, and are not movable in that way from one OS to another. (Although I have seen a demonstration of restoring AIX files to a Linux system--I have no details on the process, however.) Re: files larger than 4GB fail on NetWare client
We have a similar issue. PMR 72319 in progress with tech support. We are trying to read backupset file which is about 12GB in size on Netware volume. It looks like that any size less than 4GB works OK, but if I create backupset larger than 4GB and move it to Netware volume it doesn't work. Trace file sent to support; waiting for answer. Not much of a help; but just for you to feel that you are not the only one with the problems. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Andrew Ferris Sent: Tuesday, November 23, 2004 5:48 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: files larger than 4GB fail on NetWare client I asked a while ago about archive attempts on files larger than 4GB failing on the 5.02.03 NetWare client. I know some people think it is a NetWare issue but we've done some research of our own and other backup products seem to work with the NetWare TSAs in that situation. We really need to move forward on this issue and we're going to give Tivoli support a call. I've been told there are PMRs on this issue already and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the PMR number or whatever IBM uses to identify them so I could cite them in any conversations I have with Tivoli support. I have already tried the web-based support and it's been two weeks with no reply. Thank you in advance for any help. Re: Remote Backups....
-Use compression -Use sub-file backup. (doesn't work on files larger than 2GB; otherwise enormous improvements) -Encryption doesn't hurt if you are moving the data over public network (Internet)- will be improved in TSM 5.3 -Don't backup system object every day (around 200MB-300MB). Make additional schedule for system object and C drive (maybe on weekends) -Choose carefully what you need to backup (include/exclude) Regards, Joe C. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michael, Monte Sent: Tuesday, November 23, 2004 3:32 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Remote Backups Fellow TSM administrators: My company is currently looking at backing up approximately 40 NT servers at our remote locations, back to our local data center. Each location has around 10gb - 40gb of storage, and very minimal daily change activity on the files. Some of the locations are 256k data lines, and some are t1 lines. Does anyone have a list of best practices? What are some of the options that you have found to improve the process of remote backups via TSM to a central location. AW: Remote Backups....
perfect! in addition to this points, do make some planning & tests for restore. Basically, your problem is full restore. Either you can afford to wait long enoung to restore over remote line, (learning about "restart restore" may be important) or produce backup sets and send them per post to the remote location. best regards Juraj > -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- > Von: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Im > Auftrag von Joe Crnjanski > Gesendet: Mittwoch, 24. Re: TSM graphical interface retrieve not displaying all my archives
thanks for you answer, but active and inactive versions are only related to a backup. i am talking about archives, so there is another reason for that thanks you From: goc <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: TSM graphical interface retrieve not displaying all my archives Date: Wed, 24 Nov 2004 16:31:41 +0100 i believe theres a green button on the top wich let zou see inactive copies also - Original Message - From: "hassan hani" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, November 24, 2004 4:09 PM Subject: TSM graphical interface retrieve not displaying all my archives hello, we have a server TSM 5.1 under unix aix5.1, and we have also a TSM client under aix. we have made an archive for a file system /DATA every week it always seems works very good, yesterday, i have tried to retrive an archive for a special date, when i use the graphical interface, it displays only archives which are done between the 01 and the 09 of every month. when i use the command line dsmc retrieve "/DATA/*" -pick i can see all the archives , including those whiich are done betwen the 10 and 30 of every month does any one have an explication of that, and how can i do to resolve that thanks you very much
Configuring TDP for Oracle
Our network admin was trying to install TDP for Oracle on AIX 5.2. He encountered this error. MISSING REQUISITE: " bos.rte v<5 " when installing TDP Oracle V5.1.5 Has anyone seen this before? We are trying to install TDP 5.2, for AIX 5.2 64 bit on IBM pSeries. I subsequently installed the following packages needed for TDP and re-linked libobk.a and did not have any problems. tivoli.tsm.client.api.64bit 5.2.3.0C F TSM Client - 64bit Application Programming Interface tivoli.tsm.client.oracle.aix51.64bit5.2.0.0C FIBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases - Oracle on AIX tivoli.tsm.client.oracle.tools.aix51.64bit5.2.0.0C FIBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases - Oracle Tools on AIX tivoli.tsm.loc.client.oracle.aix51.64bit.ela 5.2.0.0C FIBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases - Oracle E-Lic I just want to make sure I have installed it right. I intend to use RMAN and am trying to configure this with the tdpo.opt file. For the parameter TDPO_FS, the documentation suggests that you set up a different filespace for each database that is being backed up on this node. Is that necessary? If so, are the filespace names separated by commas? Can anyone send me a copy of their tdpo.opt file? Thanks, Manjula - Do you Yahoo!? The all-new My Yahoo! Get yours free!
Re: files larger than 4GB fail on NetWare client
Thanks for the reply. We 're trying to archive all our Zen workstation images and some of them happen to be over 4GB. Archive/Backup operations look fine, normal speeds and conclude with no errors, but no more than 4GB is ever there. I've moved a test image over to AIX machine and no problems there but we're mainly a NetWare shop. Ah well, thanks again. Port 1501
Is anyone seeing this error? 11/23/2004 20:55:29 ANR2716E Schedule prompter was not able to contact client WINCS-0167-01 using type 1 (10.100.12.15 1501). I see where on my W2K client that port 1501 is in a CLOSE_WAIT status. Shouldn't it say listening? I'm thinking my TSM server can't contact the client because the port is not listening. Anyone know how that works? Thanks, pattie
backupset volume list
Dear List, Would anyone know if there are plans for the generate backupset command to accept a volume list file, the same way that export or backup database do currently? It is getting to be tedious to update every script every time I need to add volumes, and eventually we are going to run out of space in the command line to specify all of the volumes we would like to be candidates for the backupset. Thanks. John
