Hi, Performance guide tells us that values over 5.000.000 pages/hr are OK, so you're in the scope ! On our system, tsm 5.2.2.1 over aix 5.2-03, db size 31 MB, installed on SSA (4 disks striped and mirrored over lvm) we get more or less the same values... Hope this helped. Cheers. Attributes changing
Hello All! I have noticed this message occurring very frequently within the activity log and was wondering if this is an issue that should be looked into further or if this is just the tcp address changing? I looked up the message and it just states that the GUID has changed for the server, but this is happening all of the time and I was getting concerned. Hello! I am configuring lan-free communication for several solaris Oracle servers. I have set up server to server communication, installed Gresham EDT 6.4.6, defined the storage agent, etc. I am very confused concerning "how" to logon to the storage agent through the TSM Server and also how to even logon to a regular command line interface. I know that the storage agent info. is located at /opt/tivoli/tsm/StorageAgent/bin, but I'm a little unclear about the rest. I was looking through the Storage Agent User's guide and it just confuses me more because my definitions are slightly different. I have successfully backed up data lan-free, but this was done months ago and I'm a little rusty. Here is what I am confused about: 1. Login to the storage agent's command line. In my case this would be fjsu011sa. 2. Login to fjsu011sa through the TSM server. 3. How do I know what is "expected" for communication between the client, storage agent and server? Here are my storage agent options file, dsm.sys file for the client and the information on the definitions I have on the TSM server for the storage agent and the client. restore of a server windows 2000 after a disk crash
hello, we have a backup of a server windows 2000 under TSM. the backup consists of a complete backup of the server ( system object, partitions C and D) when we have a crash of disks, we want to use the backup under TSM. We replace disks and install OS and TSM client, but when we restore partitions C, D and system object, the server can't start up. Hi David, Thanks for the "heads up" on the install. I completed it yesterday. The process of upgrading involved getting a base 5.2.2.0, then going to 5.2.3.0 and then finally to 5.2.3.4. The only problem I noticed right away was my license files were the incorrect format. I had a 5.2 CD and used the files tivoli.tsm.license.cert & tivoli.tsm.license.rte from it to install the correct format license files. After registering them, the system was fine. Normally tracing is most useful when working with IBM support or development to diagnose a problem. The trace settings you need, and what components you need to trace depend on the nature of the problem. Perhaps if you were to describe your TSM environment and the problem you are having, and include actual documentation showing the problem, someone on this list might already know what you are seeing, eliminating the need to trace at all. I am currently trying to backed up a directory with about 3 million files in it. The problem I am having is that is gets to a point and then fails at about 2.3million files. I was hoping to trace this problem and find out if it was failing on a particular file. The point I was making is that you really should have had a DR drill, prior to your actual disaster. If you had, you would now have documentation telling everything you need to do, step by step. Tell us what kind of TSM operation is being performed (command string literal, GUI operation, etc.) A directory containing 3 million files is absurd to start with (unless you really mean a meta directory with a tree of subdirs). If it is actually millions of files within a single directory, get the owner to render that rational, with subdirectories. You may well be running out of virtual storage space if performing an incremental backup, in which case that client system needs a vstorage boost. Richard Sims

I made a lab with three win2k servers(DC, File server/SQL, TSM server) and 1 win2k workstation I made documentation and procedure for those disasters: - Restore a win2000 server (file server) - Restore a win2000 server with SQL 2000 - Restore a win2000 server that is a domain controller The one that I have problem with is - Restore a windows 2000 server with TSM SERVER on it (THE TSM SERVER) To re-install the OS on it .. no problem ... but How can I restore the data if the THE TSM SERVER is dead ... what R the steps ... exemple : 1. install TSM SERVER software 2. configure drive or library 3. import node or volumes .. 4 ... etc .. that is what I'm looking for .. the steps after the OS is up to put THE TSM SERVER back on-line with THE TSM DB, POLICY DOMAINS, NODES, SCHEDULES hope it's more clear thanks Luc

Someone else posted on this thread the link to the TSM Problem Determination Guide, which includes info on tracing. But I sure don't know enough about the problem to advise you on what to trace, i.e. what does "fails" mean? What message are you seeing in dsmsched.log, dsmerror,log, or stdout, that coincide with the failed operation? How about on the TSM server? What versions of client and server are you running, and on what operating systems? Need specifics here. Again, if we knew more about the nature of the problem, you might not even need to trace at all. If you just want to know on what file, then I would think that dsmsched.log or stdout would show you this, or at least give you a rough idea if the failure occurs consistently in the same place. But tracing as the first step in diagnostics is ill-advised, and if you were call in to support and I were working with you, it would not be the first thing we would do, just as I would not agree to start exploratory surgery unless I already had a pretty good understanding of my patient's symptoms. *** *** Note: This is just an analogy, I am not practicing medicine. The chapter I pointed you to the other day includes information on restoring the TSM server. My recommendation would be to: 1) Read the chapter I mentioned. Hi, If your ITSM server is running, give it the Prepare command (help prepare). This will give you all the info you need to recover your server. Some basic steps - Install OS; - Install ITSM server (level at least same as before); - Configure / Format DB en Logs. Size is as before or bigger; - Configure devices; - Configure (restore volhist) - RESTORE your ITSM database from last Full and Incremental DB back volumes. It isn't the complete work, some steps. Right now .. i want to just take backups of the backups taken by their application. LAter on i will automate using TSM. Can anyone kindly give me the knowledge as to what folders should i exclude from backup if: 1- I have bd2 database backup with me. 2- System state backup with me. 3- I want to restore complete system with DB2, with DB2 database backup ONLY availbale with me in a file. 4- What folders/files should i exclude from backup using BA Client, so that i don't mess up with open databases. TDP for Lotus -- Right Policy
Dear All, Sorry to popup again with a new thing .. as i went through the documentation and list archive, and web searches.. i could not find what i was looking for. My Lotus is on windows 2000 and i am using selective backups currently for entire database (70GB). What I am going to do: 1- Taking incremental daily. 2- Doing archivelog daily. 3- Doing inactivate log daily. 4- Doing compaction of all the database on Sunday morning. (Space constraint on hard disk) 5- Doing incremental backups and archivelog there after till next sunday. 6- I don't think i need to take selective backups monthly or weekly or whatever. What is my problem that i foresee: 1- If i am going to run compaction every sunday, i end up with so many databses with different DBIIDs all with their respective transaction logs. 2- If I want to delete backups taken 3 months ago, how do I do that? Some answers to your questions: 1. After you run compact, the incremental will do a full backup of all your logged databases. If you run the inactivatelog command afterwards, all the transaction logs required to recover those databases will be inactivated. Your management policy will determine the fate of those logs. If you don't run compact, make sure to run selective, so that the inactivatelog command can inactivate logs. 2. Version changes still apply after DBIID changes. The incremental will mark the previous backup as inactive and your management policy will determine how many and for how long these will be kept. 3. The Domino server knows which log extents have been backed up and it reuses them. When the Domino server start it creates a formatted set of log extent files (.TXN). When the server uses up all of them, it either creates a new one ,if none of the log extents have been archived, or reuses the oldest log extents by renaming the file to the next log extent number. That means, If DBIID changes, it will not be treated as a new database?? and older backups will be there as inactive? Great !!! That means, if i have to keep compaction running every week, and i am keeping my backups for say 12 versions then i would set: Version exists = 12 Then i say that Backup retention (Grace period) is 90 days, that would suggest that i am keeping my backups for 3 months and then deleting entirely from the tapes too. What if I have to take month end backups, 24 versions exists? and I will be keeping those selctive backups in separate policy domain with separate backup retention period = 730 days that is for 2 year.. SET DRMRPFEXPIREDAYS Question
Currently in our TSM environment, we are using DRM feature. The Recovery Plan File Expiration Days value is set to 60 Day(s) and we are doing "prepare" without any options daily. However, when I goto recovery plan location, recovery plan files older than 60 days are still there.. Why? and how can I auto delete old recovery plan files older than 60 days automatically? I thought this setting under q drmstatus suppose to take care of this, but apparently it is not. I think the behavior you're expecting only happens when the recovery plans are being stored at another TSM server. We use a shell script to clean up old recovery plan files. The ADSM-L list archive at http://adsm.org is full of this discussion. Microsoft Exchange does not support individual mailboxes or messages; as a result, since Tivoli supports and uses all third-party application APIs, TSM doesn't either. The reason other backup applications can perform "brick-level" restores is that they write their own APIs (or use MS APIs like MAPI that were not built for backup and restore processes). The result? When you apply a service pack or hot patch to Exchange, the homebrew APIs used by CommVault and Netbackup often break, because there is no way for them to anticipate what MS will do to Exchange in a given patch. I have seen this happen time and again; ArcServe used to be very bad about that. (I can't speak to how BrighStor behaves now.) Further, if you use an application that performs brick-level restores, and your Exchange information store or directory get corrupted as a result, Micrsoft (since they don't support such reports) will tell you "Too bad, so sad. Hope you have a good backup somewhere." (I've seen that happen as well.) There is a utility within Exchange called exmerge. Exmerge will take an individual mailbox and create a separate .pst file out of it; this .pst file can be backed up as a cold file, and it can be restored as a cold file which Exchange can copy back into its information store. TSM has a specialized server (called TSM for Data Retention) which will help administrators comply with data retention schemes such as Sarbanse Oaxley. However, when a business case is being created to justify such retention schemes, it is usually discovered that most business don't need to strictly comply with all aspects of S-O. I was referring specifically to TSM interacting with the Journaling aspect of Exchange. I appreciate the full response because I never honestly understood why TSM didnt write their own API like these other software packages. I understood all the aspects of using exmerge for an exchange recovery when using TSM. The windows administrator here at my company refuses to use TSM on our exchange servers due to the fact that he recovers individual mail and mailboxes regularly. Having to use exmerge to recover mail is to much work for him which is why we run backupexec on exchange and all other servers run TSM. Rick, In regards to Exchange Journaling... As I understand it, Exchange journaling works by allowing you to set up a separate mailbox to receive a copy of all email that is sent. Since that specially-created mailbox is a normal Exchange Server mailbox, it is eligible for standard backup and restore with Data Protection for Exchange. In regards to archive and archive management... if you use IBM DB2 CommonStore for Exchange Server along with IBM Content Management for Message Monitoring and Retention you could archive that mailbox and make it completely searchable.
