Re: TDP for Domino and Backup Client on one machine

2004-10-08 Thread Chernyaev Sergey
Hi,

I have little experience with subj (TDP for Domino and Backup Client on one
machine). I install these things on Windows server. All worked fine. Info I
find in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail 5.1.5 (SC32-9057-00) (TDP for
Domino for Windows).
You need really use 2 different nodenames. First nodename - for TDP, TDP
options writed in ../tsm/client/domino/bin/, second nodename - fo BA,
options for BA client - ../tsm/client/ba/bin/.

Sorry for my bad English

Sergey

Lucian,

dsm.sys is the file on UNIX that contains the stanzas.
You would add a new option: "NODENAME domserv1", for example.
For more details on dsm.sys, you can look at:
"IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for UNIX
Backup-Archive Clients Installation and User?s Guide"

Thanks,

Hi, Peter -

I have notes on FILE_SIZE and related topics in
http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts . See topic "dsmc Query Backup"
for what information can and cannot be readily reported from the client.
Remarkably, this sophisticated product, even after years of development,
is still very sadly lacking in reporting capabilities, providing almost
no means for the administrators of timesharing systems, for example, to
generate statistics on backed up file sizes, backup frequency, volume by
user, type of file system objects in backups, etc. This is one of the
areas of the product that needs a lot of attention for IBM to best its
competition.

Reset serverpassword; what is impact?

2004-10-08 Thread Mike Hagery
Hello,
Just a quick question.
Two servers: AIX 5.2, TSM 5.1.7.3, one library-manager and the other
library-client.
We use the other-server defintions on both TSM-machines for library-sharing.
Now we want a third server to setup as library-client. But we can't remember
the serverpassword we used on the TSM-server that acts as a library manager.
Now we want to reset the serverpassword. As far as I understand, I only have
to update the serverpassword on the other-servers definitions on the
library-clients.
Does this have any impact on other processes or something else?
Thanx,
Mike

What can you tell me about this product? It's really an "upgrade" to BRMS?

We've been looking for that person...;-)
HSM has been part of the ADSM/TSM product for many years, now.
It used to be called HSM: it's latest name is TSM for Space Management.
See http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr-space/
for the actual TSM product info, rather than the cited web page.
It works via a kernel extension, to intercept accesses to the
controlled file system. See the List archives for past observations
on the product. I also have some notes on it in ADSM QuickFacts.

checkin libvol

2004-10-08 Thread Joni Moyer
Hello All!

I know this will seem like a very unintelligent question, but I am in a
rush and I'm a little confused. I'm trying to checkin a library volume
into the TSM server for NDMP backup use. Currently we use ACSLS and
Gresham, but Gresham doesn't enter the mix for NDMP backups. What I am
wondering is: Is this the correct syntax for checking in library volume
T00999 into library naslib?

checkin libvol naslib T00999 status=scratch checklabel=yes

Thanks in advance!

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the info! The older of the 2 servers returned a
percent_frag of "-0.01" the newer returned a percent_frag of "27.44". The
older server is 4 years old...the newer is 3 years old. Seems strange the
newer server would have such a significantly higher frag %. Any idea what
kinds of activity result in fragmentation? Is unload/reload the answer
here or will the server make efficient use of these fragments over time?
Is unload/reload a performance solution or utilization solution or both?
or neither?

Hi Dave!
My largest production server has a rather low fragmentation level (about 2
%). Another one, which is slowly being phased out, has a percentage of
60% Both machines have a lot of nodes removed in the past, but only the
big one has nodes added.
So my guess is that TSM reuses the fragmented space for new nodes, but of
course I cannot prove this.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the info! The older of the 2 servers returned a
percent_frag of "-0.01" the newer returned a percent_frag of "27.44". The older
server is 4 years old...the newer is 3 years old. Seems strange the newer server
would have such a significantly higher frag %. Any idea what kinds of activity result
in fragmentation? Is unload/reload the answer
here or will the server make efficient use of these fragments over time?
Is unload/reload a performance solution or utilization solution or both?
or neither?

Thanks in advance,

Hi David!
Try the following SQL statement:

SELECT CAST((100 - (CAST(MAX_REDUCTION_MB AS FLOAT) * 256 ) /
(CAST(USABLE_PAGES AS FLOAT) - CAST(USED_PAGES AS FLOAT) ) * 100) AS
DECIMAL(4,2)) AS PERCENT_FRAG FROM DB

It will give you the fragmentation level.

2004-10-08 Thread Daniel Sparrman
Richard,

it all depends on your situation. If you're going to use the unload/load
feature of TSM, you'll need to do it regularly. Otherwise, over time,
you'll loose the benefits of the unload/load process.

However, if you setup a routine to do the unload/load perhaps once a year,
you will get a benefit out of using this feature.

When we made the unload/load of the 160GB database, we not only saw the
database shrink in its usage, but also gained alot of performance. This
performance benefit is actually not degrading that quickly, which, for us,
made the unload/load process worth the time.

On the TSM server side, run "QUERY STATUS" and take a look at the query
schedule period. I bet it says "4" instead of "Client". Refer to the

Reported IP inconsistency

2004-10-08 Thread Kevin Kinder
I am running the following simple query. Environment is TSM 5.1.7.0 MVS.

select -
  nodes.node_name as "Node Name",-
  nodes.tcp_address as "IP Address",-
  concat(concat(concat(concat(varchar(nodes.client_version),'.'), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_release),'.')), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_level),'.')), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_sublevel),'')) as "Client Ver", -
  nodes.url as "URL",-
from nodes -
order by nodes.node_name

The nodes.url field returns the values that have been manually entered for that node.
(These are the correct IP addresses.) However, in some instances, the value returned
from nodes.tcp_address are different. For example:

Node NameIP Address Client Ver URL

BRIMSERVER2 10.200.80.38 5.2.0.0 http://10.200.19.133:1581
FINSERVER2 10.200.13.4 5.2.0.0 http:10.200.71.100:1581

I believe this problem shows up whenever the client node has had its IP address
changed. The IP address is the original address of the server. It has since been
given a new IP address, but for some reason this field doesn't change or get updated.
It does not appear to affect the backup process, but I'd like to get this corrected.
I can't see how to edit this field - any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi Kevin

The URL is a static value, set by the TSM administrator. TSM doesnt change
this value in the case that the IP-adress of the client changes. Only the
tcpadress changes on a client change.

You can change the URL value by selecting "Updating node", and then "URL".

The tcpadress value will change as soon as you restart the TSM scheduler

If no one has changed the options files, then suspect the DNS service

Use the 'host' and/or 'dig' commands to check things out.
If no cause can be found, try putting the full hostname into the

Re: Reported IP inconsistency

2004-10-08 Thread David Moore
Hello List -

I've got zero scripting experience for TSM. But, we are trying to determine the
number of processors that are on each of the nodes that we are backing up. That info
is not available in the WEBGUI drop-downs and I don't know the tables and layouts in
the database. Is this information there? Does anyone have a SQL statement to
retrieve it using the TSM server?

Thanks in advance.

Reported IP inconsistency

I am running the following simple query. Environment is TSM 5.1.7.0 MVS.

select -
  nodes.node_name as "Node Name",-
  nodes.tcp_address as "IP Address",-
  concat(concat(concat(concat(varchar(nodes.client_version),'.'), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_release),'.')), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_level),'.')), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_sublevel),'')) as "Client Ver", -
  nodes.url as "URL",-
from nodes -
order by nodes.node_name

The nodes.url field returns the values that have been manually entered for
that node. (These are the correct IP addresses.) However, in some
instances, the value returned from nodes.tcp_address are different. For
example:

Node NameIP Address Client Ver URL

BRIMSERVER2 10.200.80.38 5.2.0.0 http://10.200.19.133:1581
FINSERVER2 10.200.13.4 5.2.0.0 http:10.200.71.100:1581

I believe this problem shows up whenever the client node has had its IP
address changed. The IP address is the original address of the server. It
has since been given a new IP address, but for some reason this field
doesn't change or get updated. It does not appear to affect the backup
process, but I'd like to get this corrected. I can't see how to edit this
field - any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have been told that TSM server must be at version 5.1.6.x or above in
order to backup Exchange 2003 (with 5.2.1TDP)... is this correct or do I
need to be running 5.2 server?

Could someone please straighten this out?

Thanks in advance

TSM does not store the number of processors. To find this info, you have to go to
each client machine and use its OS commands for finding number of processors.

Hello List -

I've got zero scripting experience for TSM. But, we are trying to determine the
number of processors that are on each of the nodes that we are backing up. That info
is not available in the WEBGUI drop-downs and I don't know the tables and layouts in
the database. Is this information there? Does anyone have a SQL statement to
retrieve it using the TSM server?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin

The URL is a static value, set by the TSM administrator. TSM doesnt change
this value in the case that the IP-adress of the client changes. Only the
tcpadress changes on a client change.

You can change the URL value by selecting "Updating node", and then "URL".

The tcpadress value will change as soon as you restart the TSM scheduler
service. It will then update the entry with the new value.

Server-Free backups/components

2004-10-08 Thread Sandra
Dear all,

1- Components
Components for Server-Free policy would be:
Server side:
TSM Extended Edition

Library:
Tape library with data mover support.

Client:
TSM B/A Client
Optional TSM for Mail/DB if I am using Exchange/Domino/Oracle/DB2 etc.
No Storage Agent required

2- OS Support:
Is server-free supported for Linux, AIX etc.? I m asking this because i have
read that it takes volume images and it is currently only supported on Windows
2000.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

FlashCopy backups

2004-10-08 Thread Sandra
Dear All,
The mechanism for FlashCopy is that one production host, which has a)TSM B/A
Client b)TDP for DB installed, initiates the backup and only the flasCopy is
created.

The other host then initiates the backup process and actually copies this
flashcopy.

On the implementation side: how do we actually track this backup if we have to
take backup of say 5 servers?

Is this supported on Linux, AIX, etc?

Kindest Regards
Sandra

TDP Setup for Domino - Please Help

2004-10-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED] fire
Hi all,

I'm having trouble with my setup here, please help...

My system is:
Solaris 8
Lotus Notes R5

I was asked to setup backup for a newly created notes partition. it is the 5th notes
partition on this particular server and on the other four partitions, the backup is
running smoothly. I'm new to this stuff, so i follow instructions form ibm:
"Configuring Data Protection for Domino", on the solaris section.. heres what i did:

- run dominstall
- make dsm_notes5.opt (option file for this particullar partition)
- ask the TSM admin to add my new node
- edit dsm.sys (copy param/options of other nodes/partition)

well, after all that i seems fine. but if i enter domdsmc commands, iget:

ACD5025E PASSWORDACCESS is Generate. Either the stored password
is incorrect or there is no stored password. If you do
not have a stored password, use of the -ADSMPWD=xxx option
will set and store your password.
ANS1025E (RC137) Session rejected: Authentication failure

so i tried to enter the same command with -ADSMPWD using our password and its OK.
it seems that every time i will issue domdsmc command, i will add that option
(-ADSMPWD)

How will i resolve this?

I tried to use "dsmc set password nodename notes_server5", (as root) it seems that
"nodename" and "notes_server5" are treated as old and new passwords..
when i was asked to enter userid, i just press enter for the default (which is the
systems hostname) and enter the password.

I play along with "dsmc set password" command, but still no luck. The WORST thing is,
when i tried to query dbbackup on ALL other partitions (domdsmc query dbbackup
"mail/m*"), i now get this error:

ANS0282E (RC168) Password file is not available.

Very bad! I screwed out! Can somebody help me out and point me into the right
direction?

Thanks in Advance!

Whew!,
radismus

I backup roughly 45 netware servers ranging from v5.1 to 6.5. The
client version is 5.2.2.3 on all of them currently, as I've had no need
to move to 5.2.3. The TSM server is 5.2.2.2. I've got mixes of tsa500,
tsa600, and tsafs depending on the OS version. The only one I've ever
had any problem with is tsafs, and even that has cleared up in the
lastest couple service packs. If tsafs is giving you trouble, the key
is to limit how much cache memory that tsafs is allowed to allocate.
This configuration can be done via commandline switches is smsstart.ncf,
or through iManager under the "SMS" heading. The setting is called
"Cache Memory Threshold". I would suggest starting with a value of 10,
and moving progressively down to 1, until it stops causing problems.
The higher you can keep it, the better performance will be.

Since TSM doesn't use the native tsagw interface, you almost have to use
St. Bernard OFM. The only other alternative I know of is to run a cron
job to stop the poa/mta before the backup, and guestimate when to bring
them back up. As far as I've seen though, using the OFM combo works
just fine. I've had to do several restores in the last 6 months, and
they all went off without a hitch. It is relatively annoying however,
that you have to restore an entire PO just to get back a few deleted
messages from one user's mailbox. GW6.5 has features to allow that
without restoring the whole PO, but that requires more disk space than
we have available. If possible, it's also a good idea to have the
backup window be different from the window when post office maintennace
is running. Slows things down like crazy here, but we can't avoid it.

Make sure the PASSWORDDIR option in dsm.sys, for the new stanza,
points to a directory where the notes user for the new partition can write

It probably is pointing to one of the already configured partitions and is
