Re: Problem with backup scripts

2003-09-11 Thread Hooft, Jeroen
Look in the Windows Client manual for returncodes:

RC 8: The operation completed with at least one warning message. For
scheduled events, the status will be Completed. Review dsmerror.log (and
dsmsched.log for scheduled events) to determine what warning messages were
issued and to assess their impact on the operation.

Can I exclude files/directories using "dsmc restore"?

AW: TSM Coredumps when started..

2003-09-11 Thread Peter Sternecker
Gerhard,

yes : "ANR7837S Internal error LOGSEG871 detected" indicates full log space.

Here is our receipt:

-prepare a new logvolume (100 MB are enough) : dsmfmt -m -log
'new_log-vol-name' 100
-start the Server with :
cd $DSMSERV_DIR
dsmserv extend log 'new_log-vol-name' 100

TSM Server starts and performs log-extension,
Recovery log analysis, Recovery log redo and Recovery log undo
(duration: 1/2 to an hour - at our site (similar size);-).
Then the server halts itself.

Before you start the server in normal environment,
start with 'DISABLESCHEDS YES' in the server.opt file
(disables admin and client schedules)
and perform a database backup.

Now the server can be started in normal environment ('DISABLESCHEDS NO').

With 5 GB log space i asume you run in 'ROLLFORWARD' mode,
so adjust your DATABASEBACKUP TRIGGER.
We use 8 GB log space and are now at 50% LOGFULL Percentage
to fire an incremental DB backup.

Hope it helps

this happen. How do I proceed to restart my TSM server at this point?

Re: How have you got your fiber-attached LTO drives connected to your TSM server?

2003-09-11 Thread Wilcox, Andy
One consideration to make here is that the IBM recommendation for Fibre LTO
drives is no more the 2 per HBA. Although taking into consideration that
this was with LTO1 drives on 1Gb FC HBAs, I would assume you could get away
with up to four LTO1 drives per 2Gb FC HBA, but only 2 LTO2 drives per 2Gb
FC HBAs.

Another consideration is that you should isolate tape only traffic to the
HBA's serving the drives. Ideally you could have a separate zone on your san
switches to serve exactly this purpose (or even have dedicated switches for
serving the tape drives should costs allow).

As for the ideal of switches or hubs... You should definately go for
switches and not hubs. A switch will let you run pretty much full bandwidth
across all connected devices whereas a hub is just a looping device so your
max throughput is the speed of the SAN, eg 2Gb per second.

Hope this provides you with some more food for thought!

Cheers

IBM3570 Magstar MP Barcode Type ?

2003-09-11 Thread Michael Benton
Hello,

I am looking at using a hand-held barcode reader to audit all the Magstar MP tapes
that my company has.
The supplier of the hand-held device has asked me what barcode type do the MP tapes
use ?
I have no idea, and cannot find any reference to the type used in any of the 3570
manuals.

Does anyone out there know what barcode type/standard the Magstar MP tapes use ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

4.2.2.12 to 5.1.0.0 upgrade and PATHS

2003-09-11 Thread Farren Minns
Hi TSMers

Ok, my questions about the 4.2 to 5.1 upgrade are prolly getting boring,
but I always like to make sure I've asked every silly question I can so as
not to get caught out.

So, next week I'm going from 4.2.2.12 to 5.1.6.2 on a Solaris 2.7 node.

I understand that PATHS are a new feature (or complication) of 5.1 but want
to know if, after upgrade I HAVE to define these. I was speaking to an IBM
rep the other day and he said yes, but I have heard others say they didn't
have to do it (sorry to keep hastling you Gary). Our setup is one tcp
attached 3494 library with two scsi 3590 tape drives. I'm surprised that
the upgrade would not see these devices already set up and create the paths
accordingly.

Anyone got a definte answer here. Also, looking at the quick-start guide on
the 5.1.0.0 media, it doesn't mention paths. The Admin guide does, but not
the quick start.

mm

Anyway, thanks for any pointers

Look in the Windows Client manual for returncodes:

scheduled events, the status will be Completed. Review dsmerror.log (and
dsmsched.log for scheduled events) to determine what warning messages were
issued and to assess their impact on the operation.

How to check exit-code pre- and postschedule commands?

2003-09-11 Thread brian welsh
Hello,

TSM-server AIX 5.1 and TSM 4.2.2.8
TSM-clients Windows and UNIX
For some clients we are working with pre- and postschedule commands. It
sometimes happens, for some reason, a post-schedule command is not executed
correctly and not executed at all. In the dsmsched.log the exit code is not
0.
On server-site you see nothing at all and you don't know the post is not
executed correctly, but f.i. a database is not started, so we have a
problem.
I'm wondering how other administrators are checking the exit-codes of pre-
and postscheduled commands. Is there a way to do this without checkin the
client logfiles?
Thans,

Brian.

Upgrade TSM 32-bit to 64-bit

I am running TSM 5.1.7.1 on an RS/6000 B80 using 32-bit. We will be getting
a new p650 server and would like to move to 64-bit. All the TSM storage
pools and database/log volumes are on a separate disk drawer that would move
to the new p650 system. I was going to install 5.1.7.1 on the new system,
import the VG's and as long as the DSMSERV.DSK and DSMSERV.OPT files point
where they are supposed to things should come right up.

Now I would like to make the p650 instal 64-bit, mostly because it will come
pre-installed with AIX 5.2. Can I install the TSM server 64-bit code and use
the same database/log volumes or do I need to restore the database using the
64-bit system?

within 1 year we use 100 imation and 500 fujifilm ultrium1 tapes in ibm lto

because of unloading problems. only 2 fujifilm tapes had serious errors.
ibm recomends fujifilm (some months ago maxell too) as alternative brands

All,

We're looking at purchasing extra LTO-1 tapes to go in our 3584. To date,
we've been running IBM tapes but we've gotten cheaper prices on HP and
Imation tapes. Both HP and Imation are priced about 30% less than the IBM
tapes.

But I'm wondering if there are any quality issues with either of these
brands. Also, I'm wondering if running non-IBM tapes in a 3584 might raise
any issues.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

hi, mark,

within 1 year we use 100 imation and 500 fujifilm ultrium1 tapes in ibm lto
drives. approximately 10% of imation tapes we had to return to distributor,
because of unloading problems. only 2 fujifilm tapes had serious errors.
ibm recomends fujifilm (some months ago maxell too) as alternative brands
to ibm ultrium tapes, you can check it on

Thanks

Mark

I understand that PATHS are a new feature (or complication) of 5.1 but
want
to know if, after upgrade I HAVE to define these. I was speaking to an IBM
rep the other day and he said yes, but I have heard others say they didn't
have to do it (sorry to keep hastling you Gary). Our setup is one tcp
attached 3494 library with two scsi 3590 tape drives. I'm surprised that
the upgrade would not see these devices already set up and create the
paths
accordingly.

Anyone got a definte answer here. Also, looking at the quick-start guide
on
the 5.1.0.0 media, it doesn't mention paths. The Admin guide does, but not
the quick start.

mm

Anyway, thanks for any pointers

That seems terribly slow. 430 GB in 14 hours is only 8.7 MB/s aggregate throughput.
Over four streams that's only 2 MB/s/stream. It has been my experience that the source
hdisks are usually the bottleneck.

There are only two tunables for the switch adapter, rpoolsize and spoolsize.
These can be changed, for example:
chdev -l css0 -a spoolsize=14680064
chdev -l css0 -a rpoolsize=16777216

A couple of things that come to mind:
 - are you mixing machines with 32 and 64 bit kernels on the same SP Switch?
 - what version of AIX are you running? What version of PSSP? What tape drives do you
have?
 - what are your vmtune settings?
 - where is the bottleneck?
   - is the switch performing well?
   - check the source disks
   - check the VMM

Different problems related to TSM5.2.0.X

2003-09-11 Thread Karel Bos
Hi,

Maybe has anyone of you the same problems.

Environment 1:
2 * win2k TSM V5.2.0.1 servers sharing a library (S.A.N. Attached 3584Lib).
This was upgraded from TSM 5.1.7.1.
Starting as of the upgrade performance went down on the web interface and
admin command line (windows client / linux is fine) Further more canceling
restore sessions brought the TSM server down with a core dump. Further more,
for those who like it, the dateformat 2 will not work anymore.

At this time we were building a new environment (other physical location).
There will be a Netapp filer, which we want to back-up with NDMP and use
file level restore available as of TSM 5.2

Environment 2:
2 * win2k TSM V5.2.0.2 servers sharing a library (S.A.N. Attached 3584lib).
The previous mentioned Web and Admin client problems are still there, as is
the dateformat 2. Restore problem could be there (we haven't tested that
yet). But, a new problem has come up. For some reason the TSM servers will
FREEZE. At first we hold the database back-up which has started when all
drive were in use by migration (diskpool overrun) and back-up stg tape -
copypool. Today it seems to be unrelated to the database back-up and the
number of available drives, it froze when only one migration, one backup
tape- copy and one back-up job were running, with plenty of available tape
drives. The sad part is that in the actlog, or anywhere else for that
matter, nothing is logged why this is happening. Show deadlock says "No
deadlock" found.

For this moment:
- Call for Restore Problem: -closed, work around in place (not killing
restore jobs);
- Call for FREEZE: - output on request send to Tivoli Support and today the
call upgraded to higher prio;
- Call for DATEFORMAT: - call opened today;
- Call for performance admin en webclient: - call opened today (high prio).

Just some info.

Regard,

Karel

Re: How have you got your fiber-attached LTO drives connected to your TSM server?

2003-09-11 Thread Tom Kauffman
Thanks Andy (and the resto of you who've responded).

I'm taking the two drives per HBA with a grain of salt :-)

If you follow the recommendations to the letter -- not more than two drives
per HBA and only one HBA on a dedicated PCI bus you find you're limited to a
maximum of 24 drives per TSM server (I think the current systems max at 4
I/O drawers per system, and three PCI buses per drawer -- I *could* be a bit
behind the times :-)

While I'm currently getting 5 to 1 compression on my SAP/Oracle database, I
have a bit of difficulty believing I could actually drive four tape drives
at 150 MB/sec from the same system. This is why I'm willing to put three
drives on the same fiber.

The current concept is two dedicated hubs, each with three drives and a
connection to one of my two switches. If the hub price is higher than I
expect, they may become an 8 port switch with all six drives and a
connection to each of the other two switches (I don't like the single point
of failure here). Worst case, I don't do either and run directly from the
tape drive to my existing switches -- I have the ports to cover this, if the
rest of the team doesn't get too creative in budgeting next year's hardware.

I will be isolating the tape and disk to seperate HBAs. My TSM server is
also my SAP DB HA fallover system, so I'll have two HBAs for SAP and two for
TSM tape drives.

This should keep us going until the next major server swapout two years from
now.

Subject: Re: How have you got your fiber-attached LTO drives connected

Cheers

We have 3 IBM LTO libraries in which we have a few IBM tapes, but primarily use Sony
and Imation. There was a recall of Imation tapes a short while ago, due to a problem
with IBM drives, but the problem has apparently been fixed (I have been assured by
Imation). We have had no problems with the Sony tapes.

Tsm server on linux under zos

2003-09-11 Thread Lee, Gary D.
Anyone out there used ibm's incarnation of linux on a z800 processor or similar?

We are moving from os/390 v2.10 to zos v3.4 which necessitates a new processor.
While we are at it, contemplating moving tsm from solaris 2.8 back to the mainframe
platform under linux.
Therefore, I am looking for information / experiences with this arrangement.

Re: How to check exit-code pre- and postschedule commands?

2003-09-11 Thread Andrew Raibeck
See the PRESCHEDULECMD and POSTSCHEDULECMD options in the 5.1 or 5.2
client manual for a discussion on how the exit code from the PRE/POST
commands affects the over-all return code from the client. Also see the
chapter on "Automating tasks" for a discussion on return codes issued by
the command line client/scheduler.

For TSM server-scheduled operations, you can use QUERY EVENT with the
FORMAT=DETAILED option to see the status and return code from the client.
While those won't tell you specifically whether the PRE/POSTSCHEDULECMD
option didn't work, a non-zero return code should prompt you to
investigate the client logs to see why they didn't get a return code of
zero (you can also bypass return code 4 if skipped files are not a
concern, at your own discretion). While you would still need to view the
client logs, at least you have an indicator of which specific clients to
look at, as opposed to having to look at all of them.

TSM versions prior to 5.1 did not reliable return codes, so this won't
help you with clients running pre-5.1 code.

Subject:How to check exit-code pre- and postschedule
commands?

Hello,

TSM-server AIX 5.1 and TSM 4.2.2.8
TSM-clients Windows and UNIX

For some clients we are working with pre- and postschedule commands. It
sometimes happens, for some reason, a post-schedule command is not
executed
correctly and not executed at all. In the dsmsched.log the exit code is
not

Thans,

Brian.

Re: 4.2.2.12 to 5.1.0.0 upgrade and PATHS

2003-09-11 Thread David Nicholson
My recollection is that we simply had to define the paths. However, SOP
says be prepared for anything. I also recall that we were told to remove
the DRIVE def's from all TSM library clients. The DRIVE's only need to be
defined to the library manager/owner in a library sharing environment now.
The devices still need to be defined to the OS on the library client, but
TSM does not require the DRIVE to be defined to library clients. I am not
sure that it is required to delete the DRIVE def's from clients, but was
recommended.

I'm assuming that the Library and Device definitions will still be in

define new drives and lib too ?

Hi TSMers

Ok, my questions about the 4.2 to 5.1 upgrade are prolly getting
boring,
but I always like to make sure I've asked every silly question I can so
as
not to get caught out.

So, next week I'm going from 4.2.2.12 to 5.1.6.2 on a Solaris 2.7
node.

I understand that PATHS are a new feature (or complication) of 5.1 but
want
to know if, after upgrade I HAVE to define these. I was speaking to an
IBM
rep the other day and he said yes, but I have heard others say they
didn't
have to do it (sorry to keep hastling you Gary). Our setup is one tcp
attached 3494 library with two scsi 3590 tape drives. I'm surprised
that
the upgrade would not see these devices already set up and create the
paths
accordingly.

Anyone got a definte answer here. Also, looking at the quick-start
guide
on
the 5.1.0.0 media, it doesn't mention paths. The Admin guide does, but
not
the quick start.

mm

Anyway, thanks for any pointers

That seems terribly slow. 430 GB in 14 hours is only 8.7 MB/s aggregate
throughput. Over four streams that's only 2 MB/s/stream. It has been my
experience that the source hdisks are usually the bottleneck.

There are only two tunables for the switch adapter, rpoolsize and
spoolsize.
These can be changed, for example:
chdev -l css0 -a spoolsize=14680064
chdev -l css0 -a rpoolsize=16777216

A couple of things that come to mind:
 - are you mixing machines with 32 and 64 bit kernels on the same SP
Switch?
 - what version of AIX are you running? What version of PSSP? What tape
drives do you have?
 - what are your vmtune settings?
 - where is the bottleneck?
   - is the switch performing well?
   - check the source disks
   - check the VMM

I hope someone got experiance on same before .

This is problem about db2(7.1) backups on high speed switch to TSM .Present
we are taking 430Gb of data to tsm which is taking 14 hrs to

no doubt I missed some parts on TSM/AIX/db2 to lubricate.

I ran a full backup of a Win2003 server last night with the 5.2.0.2 client.
The event shows as failed, but the backup actually backed up nothing. Here's
the stats:

09/10/2003 22:11:48 --- SCHEDULEREC STATUS BEGIN

09/10/2003 22:11:48 Scheduled event 'BD72200' completed successfully.

In the server log (this is a TSM 5.1.7.1 server on AIX 4.3.3) I see
numerous:

Looking at the 5.2 client manual, it says that to backup the "system
Services" I need a TSM 5.2 server?!??!!? Does that mean I can't back up a
Win2003 server unless I'm at 5.2 all the way around? This is an AIX4.3
server so I can't upgrade it to TSM 5.2.

We have never had a prob. on JFS2, it whizzes along well. Are you
formatting a single 100Gig SP ?? Personally I'd break it up into at
least 4 volumes ??

I would like to have Andy confirm this, but I believe that in order to back
up the system state data from a Windows 2003 client, you must be connected
to a TSM 5.2.0 or higher server.
What happens if you run a backup of all the filespaces except the
systemstate data? Does that work correctly without errors?

TSM 4.2 and Exchange TDP 1.1.1

2003-09-11 Thread Gerald Wichmann
I was just looking at my Exchange TDP output and have it showing all
exchange backups ever created. It shows directory backups and information
store backups (full and incremental. exchange 5.5). Is there someway I can
query our output this list of backups to a text file? On the TDP side I
don't see anything in the GUI. I'm guessing I need to do something with the
TDP cmdline to query a list of this (with dates) so I can hand this to
someone and get an idea of what to restore. Time to read some notes but if
someone knows off the top of their head how to do this I'd appreciate the
info.

Gerald

Re: 4.2.2.12 to 5.1.0.0 upgrade and PATHS

2003-09-11 Thread P Baines
If you are upgrading library manager and clients you should be careful. The
upgrade process will define paths on all your servers, and it all looks and
works ok. Until you want to define a new drive (or delete/redefine a drive)
on a library client. Then you will discover that the 4.2 Admin Guide is
wrong (5.1 is correct). All drive and path definitions now need to be done
on the library manager. Only a library definition is done on the clients. If
you don't use library managers and clients the upgrade process should define
your paths and you should be OK. (My experience on AIX)

Paul.

I'm assuming that the Library and Device definitions will still be in
place, so then it'll just be the paths that need defining. Or do I need to
define new drives and lib too ?

On the other hand, we upgraded from 4.2 to 5.1, have two 3494 libraries,
and did not have to manually define the paths..

We made the same upgrade 4.2 to 5.1 on our AIX server. We also have
3494
library. We deffinetly had to manually define the paths after the
upgrade.

Subject:        4.2.2.12 to 5.1.0.0 upgrade and PATHS
