Re: Product Release Install Advice: (Used to be WARNING about Tiv oli 4.2.1.0)

2002-02-19 Thread Ilja G. Coolen

Paul,

I can't agree more.
We had to wait a while before we could apply the fix 4.2.1.8, to fix our
3494 libary problems. Tivoli had it ready, but didn't release it because
they weren't satisfied with it. Forunately we weren't running TSM 4.2 in a
production environment at that time.

We are now running production at level 4.2.1.9, and it runs like a charm.
fix X.X.X.10 doesn't fix problems we are having, so we will not upgrade at
this time. We are testing it at our site of course.

Adding to Paul's comments on this list;
Me and my co-workers are constantly following discussions on this list and
read the posts that concerns us as well and act on it. Indeed, not every
post is usefull for everyone, but we experience this list as a international
ring of TSM friends, all trying to exploit the product to its full
potential.

Note;
I've noticed that the profesionality on this list is growing day by day. The
number of members is quite constant, but the level is getting higher.
Not forgetting about the newbies of course, who can learn a great deal in
this list. I did.

Onderwerp: Product Release Install Advice: (Used to be WARNING about
Tivoli 4.2.1.0)

First of all, BETAs apply to .0 releases before they are released GA or
patches that we never see as they are tested at selected client sites to
verify the fix test works in a customer environment. These are x.x.x.n
releases are patches on top of the base release, with all inclusive fixes up
to that point that have had limited testing. That means they have tested
the general area the problem was to fix, but not a GA release test.

The first thing I do before I put anything into production is check to see
what open problems there are that may affect me. By the time 4.2.1.9 came
out, months had passed since 4.2.1.0 GA. If I felt scared to put on
4.2.1.9, then I would have but on 4.2.1.8. 4.2.1.8 was a good patch level.
We had been running it for months before we upgraded to 4.2.1.10 just last
week. We are using all the special features. So far, the patches to
4.2.1.0 have not introduced any new problems, only fixed problems to my
knowledge. That is execellent, PE APARS are worse than broken code GA
releases because they could break something that is working and they are
very difficult for the customer to test. I did see them pull back a Windows
client update not because it broke something, but because it did not
completely fix the problem. They urged customers to go to the final fix to
the problem if they had installed the 4.2.1.16 fix.

I will admit we have a few problems that Tivoli has not fixed yet, but we
are the only customer experiencing them (or 1 of a few) and Tivoli is very
focused on serving us. That is why I ask myself if I am wasting their time
going through a dump especially if I am running a code level and there are
50 APARs that have been fixed since the code level went GA. You want good
support, when you call up and you are current and it is a problem never seen
before, you get attention.

Doug, nothing personal meant by this. Just trying to get the attention of
everyone that having Tivoli Support focusing time on problems already fixed
is not good for anyone. Andy should have said it, but he could not because
he is your vendor. "Give me a problem that I have not already fixed". The
response you got from Tivoli Support seemed really offbase about 4.2.1.9
being a "BETA". Poor choice of words on their part. The correct answer
should have been "Limited Testing Fix Patch 4.2.1.9 is known to fix many
problems. Please install this and see if the problem is reproducable, you
are experiencing many of the symptoms that have already been fixed".

This all said, prudence is still a good thing. Just because x.x.x.n just
hit the website does not mean put it on. If it fixes a problem you are
having, yes. We are staying very current because we are using a lot of SAN
stuff. There are still some minor bugs in it. Tivoli made great strides to
improve the ease with the latest releases to show you what is the latest
patches and maintenance available. I have seen them hold back for a while
before putting something in the latest directory, yet have it available in
the service site elsewhere.

I will give Tivoli one thing, at least they are trying to fix their bugs and
get a fix out timely. I cannot say that for any other vendors. Most of
them say, next release, or nope.

Now for the good news. Tivoli, based on what I know, is investing a
tremendous

Remember, TSM takes control of the drives with its driver. The Magstar
driver is overridden. The TSM driver is not compatible with NTUTIL to my
knowledge. There are also specific ways the drivers have to be installed.
Have you tried doing this with SCSI drives and NTUTIL and the TSM drivers?
I am guessing not. I am presuming that you have already installed the TSM
SAN agent and configured the drives. If not, then the Magstar driver is in
control.

With the EMULEX driver 4.4.52 it was possible to see the drives. However, it
wasn't possible to access the drives. With the EMULEX driver 4.4.53a it is
neither possible to see the drives nor to access them.

The TSM client was deinstalled. He could access the TSM server on the LAN

Could you describe your layout abit:

ie:
- TSM Server connected to the SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN
- 3494 library connected directly to the SAN via Fibre (or connected via
SCSI to TSM Server)
- NT4 Server(s) connected to SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN

On the Win4 server can you see the SAN attached drives and access them? Can
the current (LAN path) client access the TSM server (manual backup from
desktop) and can the TSM GUI see all the SAN drives (mappings - should be
the same when viewing mappings through explorer)

I am using this fibre card for both windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 ADV svr
(connected to a SAN). There are different drivers for Win2000 (but win2000
picks up the LP8000 - you need to change this - use update driver and tell
it to use Windows update). You also require a different client to backup
directly to tape (LAN FREE) (see SAN storage agent guide), however if this
path is not found it will use the LAN path to get to the diskpools.

Not sure about the RS/6000, but if it is attached to the SAN with your
library then why not?!

Are you asking how to increase the width so that
the file space name doesn't wrap to multiple
lines?

While this example doesn't wrap, it does illustrate
a method you can use to adjust the output column
widths.

STANDARD WIDTH:

select filespace_name, node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE_NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY
-- --
\\raibeck\c$ RAIBECK 44481.4

CUSTOM WIDTH (40 columns for FILESPACE_NAME):

select filespace_name as "FILESPACE NAME ",
   node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY
 --

\\raibeck\c$ RAIBECK 44481.4

Note: The "as" specification for FILESPACE_NAME is padded
with blanks to bring the entire column width to 40.

When running in batch mode, if you want the display to
appear in tabular format rather than list format, put
the select command in a macro, say, "select.mac". Then
invoke dsmadmc like this:

dsmadmc -id=adminid -pa=x -displaymode=table
macro select.mac

or like this this to redirect output to a file:

dsmadmc -id=adminid -pa=x -displaymode=table
macro select.mac > select.out 2>&1

install TSM 4.2.1.9 because both the WEB client and the Admin interface
caused S0C4 abends in the OS/390 TSM Server. We are now experiencing NT

I would never install a x.x.x.0 release in production unless Tivoli had
categorical proof that it was absolutely solid. Typically, I wait 3 months
after it is generally available and do some APAR searches to see where the
problems are. I typically wait until x.x.x.2 or .3 before I put in
production. Remember everyone is installing the stuff in a test area that
has many TB at stake and verifying the product works correctly before the
deploy to production. They are the ones generating the initial problems
that are fixed and they do a lot of testing.

ERROR DESCRIPTION:
A 3494 library cannot be used when performing a TSM server
restore db. To complete a db restore using a drive in a 3494
you have to define the library as type manual and a drive within
the 3494 as belonging to this manual library. The db restore
tape(s) then has to be loaded into the drive manually (or via
mtlib). This restriction needs to be removed. TSM servers should
be able to use the full library function of a 3494 for db
restores.
Initial Impact: Medium

LOCAL FIX:
Define the library as type manual.

* RECOMMENDATION:  *

The problem is a bug in the code that references the very

George,

I was using the 4.2.1.0 NW client and the SMDR/TSA that came with SP3 for NW
5.1. After going to 4.2.1.24 client and TSA5up7, a lot of my TSM error
messages and performance problems went away. I am too scared of Beta files,
but I have about 40 NW 5.1 servers running it and no burps from these
SMDR/TSA files yet. Sugguest you try them out on a few non-critical systems
and then go roll them out.

Re: LTO drive VS 3590E1A

2002-02-19 Thread NEUMEYER, CHRIS

IBM marketing has always done a great job at preventing "side-by-side"
comparisons on their specifications sheets. They often list different
performance specifications.
As far as I can tell, the IBM 3580 Ultrium drive holds an impressive 100GB
native (2:1 compression) whereas the IBM 3590-E1A can only hold 40GB native
with the extended cartridges (3:1 compression). IBM also publishes a
sustained data transfer rate of 15MB/second on the Ultrium, making it faster
than the 3590-E1A's "maximum drive data rate" of 14MB/second.

Having said that... my IBM storage representative says that the 3494
library is a more industrial tape library intended for larger enterprise
environments than the Ultrium 3584 tape library. IBM offers and supports
extended utilities for the 3494, such as StorWatch Expert software. Also,
the 3494 library and 3590-E1A tape drives can be FC-AL attached. Currently,
the Ultrium 3580s can not.

But, I must admit that for the GB/sq. foot the LTO 3584 is very nice. I've
worked with both libraries and they are both among the top in the industry.

Here are the specifications links...

http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/tape/3584/prod_data/g225-6853.html

Hope that helps!

TDP for Exchange

2002-02-19 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi *SM-ers!
We are looking at TDP for Exchange for backing up our Exchange servers.
The backups should be kept for 3 weeks. I'm looking for a correct TSM policy
definition. The easiest way to do this is defining a backup copygroup with
retonly=21 and retextra=21. However, I think this is not save. A full backup
on day 1 will be deleted on day 22, so all incrementals after this full (day
2,3,4,5,6 and 7) are then also useless! So one cannot go back 3 weeks in
this case.
What is the best way to guarantee a 3 week retention?
Another small issue I detected: The TDP for Exchange manual states:
After the storage group and logs are successfully backed up, the log files
are deleted.
In our case there are always 4 log files left behind after a full backup. Is
that normal behavior?
Thanks in advance for any reply!!
Kindest regards,
Eric van Loon

Re: How do you backup network drive w/o logging in?

2002-02-19 Thread Bill Boyer

Actually ,the builtin system account is not network-aware. I was trying to
back up a network share by coding the UNC name in my DSM.OPT file. It would
work while logged on, but the schedule would fail. I finally had to create a
domain userid with authority and assign it to the service.

You can try using the flag "/persistent:yes" on your NET USE command when
initially mapping a drive from your windows b/a client to the NAS device.
The mapped drive should still be available when you log out.

The only issue is that you will have to run your TSM Scheduler service
under an account other than system, one which has rights to access the NAS
device.

While this example doesn't wrap, it does illustrate

widths.

STANDARD WIDTH:

select filespace_name, node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE_NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY

select filespace_name as "FILESPACE NAME ",

Note: The "as" specification for FILESPACE_NAME is padded

When running in batch mode, if you want the display to

the select command in a macro, say, "select.mac". Then
invoke dsmadmc like this:

Hmmm,

I've seen this behaviour before on dos/windows filesystems mounted under

Unicode?
--- --- -

SI_GIULIA /mnt/win 1 Linux86 VFAT No

2002-02-19 Thread Alexander Verkooijen

Hello,

Server 4.2.1.8 on AIX 4.3.3
Client 4.2.1.0 on Linux86

Every night almost every file on the machine
is updated according to TSM:

Total number of
  objects updated:
22,861

02/19/02 13:02:32 ANE4952I (Session: 10891, Node: SI_GIULIA)
Total number
  of objects inspected:
24,392
02/19/02 13:02:32 ANE4954I (Session: 10891, Node: SI_GIULIA)
Total number

Total number
  of objects updated:
23,161

This is just a laptop and not much ever changes on it.
Certainly no one is changing the permissions and/or
ownership of 23,000 files every night.
First I thought it was a bug in the Linux client,
but we have more clients on this level and this
is the only one that behaves like this.

Has anyone seen this before?

Re: TDP Domino

2002-02-19 Thread Shawn Tullier

Geoff,

We have been running TDP for domino for almost a year now. Here are some
answers to your questions:

>>Does anyone running this have a "best practices" setup?

We have 3 different Domino Servers being backed up differently. Our Domino
Web Server (Not many changes) gets a full "selective" backup every night,
no transaction logging. Our Domino Development Server (Slightly more
changes) gets an "incremental" backup every night, a full "selective
backup" once a month, and a transaction log archive once a day. Our Domino
Mail/Replication Hub server (Plenty of changes) gets an "incremental"
backup every night, a full "selective backup" once a month, and a
transaction log archive every 6 hours.

>>How is the TSM server set up to expire old data? Or is it done via the
client?

We decided to create 3 different management classes for the data: one for
our Product Related Databases (storage retention 10 years) one for our Mail
Databases (storage retention 6 months) and one for our System Databases
(log files, etc. storage retention 2 versions). Expiration is handled by
the server.

>>Do you have any options files I can take a look at?

Here is an example of our daily incremental options file:

Yes, the cast doesn't handle this, but padding the heading with blanks
(see my note below) should do the trick.

Also see my note below about the -DISPLAYMODE option. -DISPLAYMODE=LIST
will "force" the output to the "list-style" format as your output shows.
If you prefer tabular output (one record per line), you can use
-DISPLAYMODE=TABLE.

The actual production release we put in production was not 4.2.1.0. I
believe it was 4.2.1.1. We have the same fear of anything .0 . We had to
install TSM 4.2.1.9 because both the WEB client and the Admin interface
caused S0C4 abends in the OS/390 TSM Server. We are now experiencing NT
clients refusing connection due to down level client code. I downloaded TSM
4.2.1.10 based on advice from IBM. This is supposed to correct this
problem. In the mean time the NT Admins have been upgrading to TSM client
4.2.1 .

Question: Are TSM admins usually responsible for installing TSM client
code, or is that task given to each platform Admin?

I would never install a x.x.x.0 release in production unless Tivoli had
categorical proof that it was absolutely solid. Typically, I wait 3 months
after it is generally available and do some APAR searches to see where the
problems are. I typically wait until x.x.x.2 or .3 before I put in
production. Remember everyone is installing the stuff in a test area that
has many TB at stake and verifying the product works correctly before the
deploy to production. They are the ones generating the initial problems
that are fixed and they do a lot of testing.

We tested 4.2.1.0 for a month, and then applied it in production. After two
weeks in production, TSM died. After sending IBM lots of data dumps, the
IBM help desk admitted that there were KNOWN BUGS in 4.2.1.0. Our choices
were to backlevel to an older version of TSM, or move ahead to a BETA
version, 4.2.1.9, that was supposed to fix our problem. We have been
running this Beta for about two months, but it is scary to be on the
bleeding edge. I do not understand why Tivoli would put out code with major
known problems.

More than one storage pool backing up to a single copypool.

2002-02-19 Thread Martin, Jon R.

All,

Is it possible to have two storage pool's backup to the same copy
storage pool? I don't see anything in the manuals saying yes or no.

We currently have a 'TAPEPOOL' which is backed up to a 'COPYPOOL' .
Then the 'COPYPOOL' tapes are sent offsite. The original intention of our
TSM installation was for backup of 'server' data only. The 'TAPEPOOL' uses
collocation.

Recently a growing number of executives have "asked" to have their
desktops installed as TSM clients. My problem is that right now each of
these desktops will "hog" an entire volume because of the collocation.

What I would like to do is create a 'TAPEPOOL_PC' which has
collocation turned off and does a backup to the existing 'COPYPOOL'.

Thank You,
Jon Martin

Yes you can do what you requested. Many primary pools, both collocated

Yes, you can have many primary storage pools backing up to a single copy
pool, and it's usually a good idea to do that. It reduces the number of

Absolutely, but you get what you ask for, it may not be what you want.

Typically, where it is used is a primary disk pool with a next pool (tape),
with a next pool (tape), etc. This group of storage would be propogated to
a storage copy pool in order as documented in the manual. There is no issue
also with having multiple primary pool with next pool groups to a single
copy pool.

Re: How do you secure the passwd in a TSM admin command run a vi a batch script

2002-02-19 Thread Kai Hintze

expect works really well if you are used to TCL/c-shell type logic. If you
are more of a ksh person, or already know perl you will probably prefer the
perl version. It works well if you are running it from AIX or Solaris. HP/UX
handles tty's in a strange fashion, and perl expect does not work there. If
you are an HP/UX shop there is perl Net::Telnet. It runs on the three
platforms I have tested, but as the name implies, you are opening a new
telnet session under your current process, so you need to provide logon
credentials as well as the TSM credentials. Once you are connected though,
it is very powerful.

My personal preference is to run everything from an AIX base, and if I need
to do something on an HP box I use perl expect to control /usr/bin/telnet to
the HP box. If you decide to use the perl expect you might want to
borrow a copy of the O'Rielly Expect book (sorry, I can't remember the name)
to read once for concepts. The perl version works well, but is not as
thoroughly documented.

IBM marketing has always done a great job at preventing "side-by-side"
comparisons on their specifications sheets. They often list different
performance specifications. As far as I can tell, the IBM 3580 Ultrium drive
holds an impressive 100GB native (2:1 compression) whereas the IBM 3590-E1A
can only hold 40GB native with the extended cartridges (3:1 compression).
IBM also publishes a sustained data transfer rate of 15MB/second on the
Ultrium, making it faster than the 3590-E1A's "maximum drive data rate" of
14MB/second.

am guessing not. I am presuming that you have already installed the TSM SAN
agent and configured the drives.

Re: Antwort: Netware 5.1/ TSM client 4.1 restore problem - diskspace

2002-02-19 Thread David Longo

Per our Netware Admin we do not have "space restrictions" in use.
The restore was apparently trying to turn them on! The other permissions
you listed below are all correct. But we still have the restore problem.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/18/02 03:23AM >>>
David,

when you backup a file from a novell file server all file information,
including "file_owner", will be saved.
At restore time all these information will be written to disk. If the
"file_owner" exsist and the volume space is limited
by "user space restrictions" the restore may fail.
If ihe "file_owner" doesn t exsist the "file_owner" will be replaced with
the name you assigned for TSM to access the volumes.
Set the "user space restrictions" to unlimited for the specific user and
retry to restore.
Hope that helps

We have TSM server 3.7.4.0 on AIX 4.3.3. Have some Netware clients
on Netware 5.1 SP3 and TSM client 4.1.0.0. Netware VOL1 is NSS volume
and set for Long File Names. Have been running fine for about a year in
this
config. Have restored users files many times this last year.

Now have problem trying to do some restores. When tried to restore a users
many files in "...NT 4.0 workstation Profile.../ folders and subdirs,
several things
happened. 134 files restored and 500 failed. We tried this sevreal times
and
restored to another node to see what happened. You get Tivoli message
ANS 4024E "... write failed.." on certain files. also a TSA message about
can't write to file (didn't get message copied). We found that on the
Netware
System Console a message pops up the first time we try on a node.

"Directory quotas enabled on volume "VOL1"."

Our Netware Admin says the only way he knows that can happen is to type
a command on the console to enable it.

We tried restoring to the SYS: volume on 2 nodes and then when we get to
certain files(the ones that failed on VOL1:) it says "Out of disk
space..." and
gives you a prompt to Abort/Retry/Skip. However we are not out of disk
space. The files in general that fail are *.lnk, *.bmp and *.ini, but not
sure
if that is a pattern or not. It will fail on same file each time.

In case it was some problem with that users files, tried another users
"NT Profile" directories and got similar results.
As I said we have restored many times in last year, but I don';t think
much restore done from "NT profile directory". Have done some
search on Tivoli Web site for this problem and didn't find.

Does anyone have an idea what our problem(s) are?

Chained Tapepools to avoid reclamation ?

2002-02-19 Thread Stefan Holzwarth

I think about, wheter it makes sense to have several typepools (all primary)
chained together.

Disk-> Tapepool1 -> Tapepool2 ( -> Tapepool 3)

Maybe it is possible to reduce reclamtion processing by putting the frequent
changing files
to the beginning of the chain and allowing the static files (controlled by
migration delay) to
fill the tapes in the second tapepool.

Does it work? What are your experiences?

No hits in the APAR database, either.

We've noticed this also - running on 4.2.0 on W2K. We've switched to
manually increasing bufpoolsize and turning off SELFTUNEBUFFPOOLSIZE.

>From a TSM 3.7 Redbook -
"The current values for memory usage limits by the BUFPOOLSIZE value are 10%
of the real memory for AIX, HP Unix, Sun Solaris, and Windows NT, and 50% of
the region size in OS/390. This does also mean that Tivoli Storage Manager
may not be able, in all cases, to optimally tune the BUFPOOLSIZE value,
because the server could not have enough real memory installed."

Can anyone confirm if the above is still true for 4.x?

You are basically on the right track. You don't have to do one monster
'backup stgpool' command. You can do a series of backup operations as data
flows into the onsite L700 pool and populate the offsite L700 pool
incrementally.

If you have large amounts of data in relatively short lived database backups,
you may want to start sending new backups to L700 and wait a while to migrate
old backups from 3570 tape. This would allow a large portion of the data to
age off, eliminating the need to migrate it.

The phrase 'destroy the 3570 tapes' makes me cringe a bit. The clean way to
deal with the old tapes once you have a full set of offsite copies on L700
tapes is to run 'delete volume' commands with 'discarddata=yes'.

With the "LABEL LIBVOL" command there is an option:

My standard caveat on this is be careful as you can overwrite good

Are you asking how to increase the width so that
the file space name doesn't wrap to multiple
lines?

While this example doesn't wrap, it does illustrate
a method you can use to adjust the output column
widths.

STANDARD WIDTH:

select filespace_name, node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE_NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY
-- --
\\raibeck\c$ RAIBECK 44481.4

CUSTOM WIDTH (40 columns for FILESPACE_NAME):

select filespace_name as "FILESPACE NAME ",
   node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY
 --

\\raibeck\c$ RAIBECK 44481.4

Note: The "as" specification for FILESPACE_NAME is padded
with blanks to bring the entire column width to 40.

When running in batch mode, if you want the display to
appear in tabular format rather than list format, put
the select command in a macro, say, "select.mac". Then
invoke dsmadmc like this:

dsmadmc -id=adminid -pa=x -displaymode=table
macro select.mac

or like this this to redirect output to a file:

dsmadmc -id=adminid -pa=x -displaymode=table
macro select.mac > select.out 2>&1

Re: Select statement: Data Time Stamp Manipulation

2002-02-19 Thread Seay, Paul

The character representation of the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP is called a TIMESTAMP,
same for any date/time field in TIMESTAMP format. There are many functions
you can use against it to get portions of the field. The functions are:

DATE()
HOUR()
MINUTE()
SECOND()

to name a few. Look in the DB2 SQL Command Reference if you have it.

You can do something like this:

CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 14 DAYS
CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 2 HOURS

As arguments in a WHERE clause.

Are you asking how to increase the width so that
the file space name doesn't wrap to multiple
lines?

While this example doesn't wrap, it does illustrate
a method you can use to adjust the output column
widths.

STANDARD WIDTH:

select filespace_name, node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE_NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY
-- --
\\raibeck\c$ RAIBECK 44481.4

CUSTOM WIDTH (40 columns for FILESPACE_NAME):

select filespace_name as "FILESPACE NAME ",
   node_name, capacity from filespaces

FILESPACE NAME NODE_NAME CAPACITY
 --

\\raibeck\c$ RAIBECK 44481.4

Note: The "as" specification for FILESPACE_NAME is padded
with blanks to bring the entire column width to 40.

When running in batch mode, if you want the display to
appear in tabular format rather than list format, put
the select command in a macro, say, "select.mac". Then
invoke dsmadmc like this:

dsmadmc -id=adminid -pa=x -displaymode=table
macro select.mac

or like this this to redirect output to a file:

dsmadmc -id=adminid -pa=x -displaymode=table
macro select.mac > select.out 2>&1

How do I increase the output field size for

The character representation of the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP is called a TIMESTAMP,
same for any date/time field in TIMESTAMP format. There are many functions
you can use against it to get portions of the field. The functions are:

DATE()
HOUR()
MINUTE()
SECOND()

to name a few. Look in the DB2 SQL Command Reference if you have it.

You can do something like this:

CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 14 DAYS
CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 2 HOURS

As arguments in a WHERE clause.

Hi,

Could someone please give me an easy way to remember how to convert
DATE_TIME into manipulative items? I've seen so many ways to convert to time
and date - I'm confused about the math that is being used - or if someone
knows of a good whitepaper? I have sql books and the TSM guides - and can't
seem to find any references to this field.

Re: TDP for Exchange

2002-02-19 Thread Garrison, Tony

set up your policy domain for 27 or 28 days. This will always ensure you
have a 3 week recovery window. 27 will do what is needed as long as you run
your full backups on a weekly schedule and do not miss any.

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is what I just received from my sales rep
as to the pricing structure for TSM clients. I hadn't heard this until
today, so thought I'd share it:

Clarification I just rec'd,

Old Way all clients were "four Tivoli points"= about $120

New Way Desktop Clients = "four Tivoli points"
NT Server = "seven Tivoli points"
  Unix   = "15 Tivoli points"

List price is $31/ point

I also contacted Tivoli, and got the answer (in writing) that you register
each machine, regardless of how many nodes there are registered to TSM for
the machine. Guess it depends on who at Tivoli you ask (or, perhaps, what
country you live in).

It's surprising that no one at Tivoli has weighed in on this discussion
with an official pronouncement...

Hi Bill

When I received your mail, I contacted Tivoli. According to them, each
registred nodename on the TSM server is a managed system. There is NO
"special" situations where you can register more licenses than you have
purchased.

If it is so, how do you controll how many licenses you have to buy?

Hopefully, you don't have to many servers registred like this. And also,
according to Tivoli, the number of licenses you have to buy, is the number
that is stated using "q lic", not how many hardware systems you have.

Re: Installing multiple BA clients on Solaris

2002-02-19 Thread Steve Harris

Hi Niklas,

This is one way to do it.

We have a two machine solaris (Veritas) cluster and there is a client for each machine.
We also have a client running for each application in the cluster.
Each application has its own group of filesystems e.g. /p11,/p12,/p13..,/p19 all
belong to one application, /p21../p29 all belong to a second application and so on.
Application code/config is always installed in /px1/app e.g oracle in
/px1/app/oracle, tivoli monitoring in /px1/app/tivoli and so on.
We only have one TSM client install on the box, but for each application the config
files are in /px1/app/tsm
in the dsm.sys for the box we have a stanza for each client. The TCPPORT and HTTPPORT
are incremented for each client e.g.

Actually ,the builtin system account is not network-aware. I was trying to
back up a network share by coding the UNC name in my DSM.OPT file. It
would
work while logged on, but the schedule would fail. I finally had to create
a
domain userid with authority and assign it to the service.

You can try using the flag "/persistent:yes" on your NET USE command when
initially mapping a drive from your windows b/a client to the NAS device.
The mapped drive should still be available when you log out.

The only issue is that you will have to run your TSM Scheduler service
under an account other than system, one which has rights to access the NAS
device.

Re: Problem of labelisation

2002-02-19 Thread Roger Deschner

In an automated tape library, you use optical barcode labels to specify
the magnetic tape labels. This is done at the time you check them in.
The manual says:

Examples

Task

Label tapes in a library named AUTO automatically as you are checking the
volumes in.

Command:

 label libvolume auto search=yes labelsource=barcode
  checkin=scratch overwrite=yes

The only way to change the label of a tape that is already in the
library is to check it out, change its barcode label, and then check it
back in as a new tape.

As long as you are using optical barcode labels on the tape cartridges,
overwrite=yes is OK, if you always use it with labelsource=barcode.

AW: backupset questions

2002-02-19 Thread Oing, Stefan

Hi Justin,
a backup set is a collection of backed up files from one client. It is a
snapshot of active backed up files (files on the server) from one client.
You don´t need include or exclude lists for a backup set.

Kind regards

Stefan Oing

Do backupsets ignore include exclude lists on the client?

Server License Compliance FAILED

2002-02-19 Thread Oliver Martin

I had to reboot the server because of an bad CMOS Battery. After the reboot
I did an "ACCEPT DATE" for the server because the TSM server had an problem
with the date/time configuration, that is why I forgot to change the BIOS
date/time settings to change.

Now the server is running but when I make an q st the system tells me that
the Server License Compliance: FAILED. I tried to register the license new
but then I got the error message ANR9638W. I read the what the error
message means but I dont know what the "license authorization file" is. Can
someone tell me more ?

HiOn a Windows box, the license authorization file is adsmlicn.dll.On a UNIX box it's called dsmlicense. The file must somehow have been damaged. Just re-install your licenses. The file(s) are located under /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin, or c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server.Best RegardsDaniel Sparrman---Daniel SparrmanExist i Stockholm ABBergkällavägen 31D192 79 SOLLENTUNAVäxel: 08 - 754 98 00Mobil: 070 - 399 27 51 Oliver Martin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>2002-02-20 08:04Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: bcc: Subject: Server License Compliance FAILED I had to reboot the server because of an bad CMOS Battery. The NODELOCK file is the license authorization file. This has been
discussed before on the list. I believe the discussion was to just delete
the file and reregister your configuration. But, you will need the base CD
that has all of the registration files on it unless you copied them to your
server.
