Re: RESTORE VOLUMES

2002-02-15 Thread Gary Swanton

Hi Michel,

Thanx for your assistance. It continually frustrates me
that here is a product that out of the box requires the user (read
admin) to have another skill set ie SQL just so he can do reasonable
job.

An admin without the skill set to create SQL queries and alike
(like me) will find that TSM out of the box is about as efficient as an
ashtray on a motorbike.

Guess I better get myself on a course to learn SQL...

Thanx again..

Gary

Hi Garry
CStringArray is a class in MFC (You shlould use ODBC
to connect TSM tables and a Programming language)

If you DO not use C++ or something like it. You have
to use some script editor (PERL...)
I use Norton Dos.
Little example of script.
SETLOCAL
PUSHD "C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM"
Echo>C:\Command.txt select file_name from contents
where volume_name='vol1'
DSMADMC -id=admin -password=admin -noconfirm <
c:\Command.txt > C:\Results.TXT
POPD
ENDLOCAL

This will just generate a file with the file_name
contents of the tape 'vol1'

This is a basis.
I hope you can continue.
Good luck

Michel

TDP for SAP

2002-02-15 Thread Gianni Garda

Hi all

This is my initSID.utl

I have a problem with TDP for SAP

I have set a BRBACKUPMGTCLASS xxx and a BRARCHIVEMGTCLASS yyy in my
initSID.utl.

When I start the save of the redo log files the first file is saved with
BRARCHIVEMGTCLASS yyy (this is true) but all the others are saved with
BRBACKUPMGTCLASS xxx.

Why all files are not saved with BRARCHIVEMGTCLASS yyy ? The command is
brarchive..

Thanks in advance

ANS1017E (RC-50) Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure

2002-02-15 Thread Paul Van De Vijver

We are switching from TokenRing to Ethernet (100MB,full duplex) to do our
TSM Backups.

I did test with two 'TDP for Lorus Domino' clients but about 1/3 of the
Domino DB's backup are failing
with above error.
Funny thing is that I now get the same error also for 'TDP' clients NOT
backing up via Ethernet but via TR.
Does this mean that TSM Server can not cope in time with incoming data ?

I did increase some TCPIP settings but without any result.
Can anyone help me with this ?

Thanks,

Restoring files from one client to another

Hi TSMers

Until recently we have been backing up a machine that we'll call FRED. The
applications on that machine has been slowly migrated to another box and we
have been able to re-use FRED for another purpose. However, we are keeping
the data that has been backed up for Fred in case the origional box needs
to be re-built or the data is required.

Here is my question.

Baring in mind that the machine FRED no longer exists. is there a way to
restore files backed up from Fred to another client node should the need
arrise.

We are running TSM server 3.7.3.8 on a Sun Solaris 2.7 machine. Clients in

Turning off a 3494 library

2002-02-15 Thread Farren Minns

Hi TSMers

We are soon to be relocating to new premises and will need to move our 3494
tape library containing two 3590 tape drives. My questions are regarding
the safest way to do this.

Question 1 - What is the best way to remove the tapes for the physical move
of the library. Do they all need to be checked out and checked back in
again at the new site via TSM, or can the library just be paused and the
tapes physically removed and replaced when the library is in position at
the new site. Also, if the tapes can just be physically moved, does it
matter in what order they are put back into the holding racks within the
library.

Question 2 - What is the procedure for powering off and on of the library.
Does the lib need to be put into a certain mode before the power is turned
off etc.

Thanks ever so much for any help

Re: Turning off a 3494 library

2002-02-15 Thread Ilja G. Coolen

Answer 1 - Before transport, physically remove all the tapes by opening the
doors.
After installment, just put the tapes in the slots and perform a full
inventory. No checkin will be required.

Answer 2 - I certainly hope your IBM CE will perform the move. The CE should
also put the lib in place at your new location. The CE will also powerdown
the lib. But if you would really wan't to to it yourself, use the powerdown
option at the library console.
After a full powerdown, wich can take up to 30 minutes, flip the
powerswitches in the lib manager frame, not the appealing red switch at the
front.

I would not like to move a 3494 lib myself!!

Re: Restoring files from one client to another

2002-02-15 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

First of all, you'll have to temporary install a tsm client for node FRED.
This can be done on any machine. Second, you will have to grant access to
other nodes to access FRED:s data. Then you can open those nodes TSM
client, and select Access Another User. Type in FRED, and you'll be able to
restore files from FRED.

The second option is to change another machines NODENAME option(in dsm.opt)
to FRED, and log on with FRED:s password. This way, you'll be able to
restore files from FRED to another machine.

If you use the second option, be sure not to do a backup. This will start
expiration of FRED:s files, as they no longer exist on the system you're on
.

2002-02-15 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi Steve!
Before we used ADSM we used Legent's ESM (now I believe it's called CA-ESM).
ESM also stored one copy of each identical file. Believe me, you do not want
that. The first (and thus only) copy of winword.exe is definitively stored
on a different tape than the rest of the clients data. This kind of
duplicate backup data elimination causes the data to be scattered across
numerous tapes. I know this from experience. This is one of the reasons (the
other reason was that the product was buggy as hell) we migrated from ESM to
ADSM a few years ago.

I'm not an expert with ADSM, but does ADSM have any of the advanced
features that this article talked about? Can it back up a file only once
for all the computers that have a copy of it? Or will it back up
Winword.exe 5000 times for my whole organization?

We're starting to look at what it will take to offer backup for the
entire campus, and some of these advanced features would be desirable.

Re: DEVCLASS:FORMAT ? ESTIMATED SIZE ?

2002-02-15 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

You should only have to set format to DRIVES, because the drives normally
compress as default. You can also use AITC, which means AIT compressed. You
don't have to set Estimated capacity, but if you want to do this, set it to
what the tape can hold with compression(think it's 100GB with compression
on AIT-2).

Hi,

As long as FRED does no new incremental backups, it's data doesn't expire.
Other machines can restore that data using the -virtualnode option to the tsm

You can get very satisfactory results with an os390 TSM server.
Make sure you are running multi threaded for cpu
If you do a "query option" check that you have

Have a look at the information provided by query active ie.

Neither.
Look at the help for IMPORT NODE.

If the filespaces you are importing have identical names to the ones backed
up on the new server (and they probably will, since the clients haven't
changed), IMPORT will create new filespace names for the imported ones. TSM

We had a TSM region setup for testing and we are moving servers from one TSM
started task to another one.

So far we've just pointed the servers to the new TSM. We'd like to export
all data for each node to import into the new TSM. If we do this, would we
overwrite data in the new environment, or would it simply store it?

dsmserv restore db problem with 3494 libr

2002-02-15 Thread Gloeer, Kirsten

Hi,

We have problems to restore a database with a 3494 library:

ANR0900I Processing options file
/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmserv.opt.
ANR8200I TCP/IP driver ready for connection with clients on port
1550.
ANR0200I Recovery log assigned capacity is 12276 megabytes.
ANR0201I Database assigned capacity is 64864 megabytes.
ANR4600I Processing volume history file
/usr/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/volumehistory.
ANR8476E Operation is not supported for the libtype of library
ROBOT_3494.
ANRD admdbbk.c(4294): ThreadId<0> Error 272 creating device
class DEVC_3590.

We can restore the server by server to server communication and we don't
have a
problem to access the library from the restored server. Is the dsmserv
restore db
command no longer supported for a 3494 library?

On the TSM server side, run "query db format=detail" and check the "Cache

If it is under 98%, you need to increase the number of database buffers in

We use the QLA2200F PCI card without any problems. I cannot imagine why
there would be a problem with this. I believe the same driver is used for
both. The real issue is SBUS is going to be MUCH slower than the PCI card
(25mhz vs 66mhz). Yes the IO slot board for PCI is about 10K and you may
not have room for it, but it is really worth the difference in performance
when you start running both FC disk and tape.

TSM subfilebackup

2002-02-15 Thread Luecke, Wolf-Christian (K-DOI-44)

Hello TSM users,

I have some questions about the TSM adaptive subfilebackup, may someone can
help me:

* What will happens when someone delete the tsm_cache folder without
knowing it?
Inside this folder threr are the basefile, the metafile and the
client_cache_dbfile
* Is the option to use the adaptive subfilebackup more burden for The
TSM-Server ?
More datavolumes to work with for the server.
* Is a normaly Fullbackup, manually started the same as the server
does when a new basefile will be created?
Does the creation of a new basefile include the cheking of changed
datas, or does it just overwrite all spaces.
* When I use this kind of backup with more generations, will be placed
for every new generation a new basefile,
or does realy just the adaptives got newer (so I can use more
generations with less datavolumes) and only just onebasefile?

Re: Novell performance issue

2002-02-15 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

The error you are getting is due to a bug in CLIB.NLM. First of all, you
should upgrade your TSM client to at least version 4.2.1.9(if i remember
correctly). We're running at level 4.2.1.23, and it works great.

Second of all, your Novell admins may be hesitant, but there are no other
choice than to upgrade to tsa5up8, as the bug in CLIB.NLM is corrected in
this version.

This errors is logged with Tivoli. Thereof the version 4.2.1.9 client.
However, Tivoli cannot do anything about the bug in CLIB.NLM. There is also
a registred request at Novell support concering this problem.

I'd try getting the Novell admins to upgrade, as this is the only choice.

2002-02-15 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

Perhaps I misunderstood you, but the Qlogic adapters are oem:ed by IBM, so
if you buy a IBM FC adapter, this is normally a Qlogic adapter.

And the FC attached 3584 uses SCSI address translation against WWN. We've
got this running today on AIX, and if you do a lsdev -C|grep rmt, you will
get the scsi addresses for each drive. Same with the library(/dev/smcX).
This should mean that the Qlogic adapter can handle SCSI >> WWN
translation.

2002-02-15 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

No Thomas, the dsmserv restore handles automated libraries, as long as the
devcnfg.out file exists, and that both drives and library are described in
this file.

Kirsten, is it the same machine HW you are trying to restore the database
to? If so, does both the volhist.out and the devcnfg.out exist in the right
directory?

If it is not the same machine, there might be a chance that the ID:s for
the drive/library is not the same as the old hardware. This is worth
checking out.

My best guess is that the devcnfg.out (device configuration) is not the
same as the actual configuration on the machine.

Re: AW: dsmserv restore db problem with 3494 libr

2002-02-15 Thread Ilja G. Coolen

Daniel, Thomas,

This issue was posted here by me in december last year, after experiencing
the problem that the database couldn't be restored using libt=349X.

I was told by the guru's in this list that this was the situation since TSM
3.7, but a APAR was being developed at the moment.
In order to do a database restore with the current releases, you need to
define a manual library.

I found it out the hard way, so i had to reinstall the TSM server code.

Best Regards

2002-02-15 Thread Dirk Billerbeck

Hi Eric,

I just can second this! Just thinking of that kind of restore makes me
shudder! This should be much worse than a restore without collocation and
about the same like a restore with a multiplexed backup. And think about a
parallel restore of two, three or more clients, each competing for the same
file on the same tape but to different times...

This feature is definitely one I don't want to have and I don't need to
have!! Then I'll rather buy some more tapes!

Hi Steve!
Before we used ADSM we used Legent's ESM (now I believe it's called
CA-ESM).
ESM also stored one copy of each identical file. Believe me, you do not
want
that. The first (and thus only) copy of winword.exe is definitively stored
on a different tape than the rest of the clients data. This kind of
duplicate backup data elimination causes the data to be scattered across
numerous tapes. I know this from experience. This is one of the reasons
(the
other reason was that the product was buggy as hell) we migrated from ESM
to
ADSM a few years ago.

Hi

Perhaps I misunderstood you, but the Qlogic adapters are oem:ed by IBM,
so
if you buy a IBM FC adapter, this is normally a Qlogic adapter.

And the FC attached 3584 uses SCSI address translation against WWN.
We've
got this running today on AIX, and if you do a lsdev -C|grep rmt, you
will
get the scsi addresses for each drive. Same with the library(/dev/smcX).
This should mean that the Qlogic adapter can handle SCSI >> WWN
translation.

Hi all!
I believe I heard about an issue with Qlogic adapters and SCSI address
assignments. For Qlogic adapters you cannot define fixed SCSI address
assignment (fixed relation between SCSI LUN's and FC World Wide Name).
So
if
another FC device is added to the host, your SCSI assignments are messed
up.

We use the QLA2200F PCI card without any problems. I cannot imagine why
there would be a problem with this. I believe the same driver is used
for
both. The real issue is SBUS is going to be MUCH slower than the PCI
card
(25mhz vs 66mhz). Yes the IO slot board for PCI is about 10K and you
may
not have room for it, but it is really worth the difference in
performance
when you start running both FC disk and tape.

Re: Sun Solaris and Qlogic QLA2202FS (Sbus) and 3590-EIA

2002-02-15 Thread Dylan Ryback

I don't know how/if this will be an issue for you, but we bought the OEM
version of the Qlogic QLA2202F PCI card for use with an A5000 disk array.
We did this because the Sun-branded version of the card was about 3x as
expensive. We later found out that you can not bind the native Sun Solaris
fibre channel drivers to the card and had to use the ones supplied by
Qlogic. What this meant was that we had to define the SCSI targets in the
sd.conf file in order for the server to see the disks and it saw them as
just that, SCSI devices. The downside was that since we had to use the
Qlogic drivers, the OS would not recognize the array as being a SENA, and
hence none of the tools that one would use to manage the array (e.g.,
luxadm) would work with it. The fcode loaded on the Sun-branded PCI version
of the 2202F is different than the fcode loaded on the OEM versions of the
card, which is why the Sun SUNWqlc drivers wouldn't bind to the OEM version
(at least on Solaris 7).

If this even remotely sounds like it could be an issue, research the card
you are getting very thoroughly (if it's not Sun-branded) and see if there
are any patches/bug fixes on SunSolve.

HTH,
Dylan

2002-02-15 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi all

Using version 4.2.1.9 of TSM for AIX, I last week restored a database
backup both from a 3584 and a 3575-L32. No manual libraries here. Both the
3584 and the 3575 was configured as automated libraries, each with 3 drives
in it. It worked perfect. So, perhaps this is a problem with 3.7, but I
cannot read in the description from Kirsten what level they are running.

If they are running 3.7, perhaps this is the problem. But with version 4.1
and 4.2, there is no need to define a manual library. I have tested this in
real life, and it works.

If it is not the same machine, there might be a chance that the ID:s for
the drive/library is not the same as the old hardware. This is worth

My best guess is that the devcnfg.out (device configuration) is not the
same as the actual configuration on the machine.

I feel quite fortunate,

At our site, which is a pension fund, insurance and morgage supplier, we
only backup servers.
The users are required to store the data they want backupped, on the
fileservers.
We also have an SOE on all the client stations in the company. That would be
about 6000 desktops.
If the desktop is corrupted, the user support guy comes along, puts a flop
in the drive, takes a 30 minute coffeebreak or something, and leaves. The
desktop is as good as new. All the data on it will be lost. Company policy.
I like it that way. I don't have to worry about backing up the desktops. The
servers are tough enough.

Our serverpark consists of 140 NT boxes, 50 Aix and 15 Solaris boxes. About
80 NT boxes are fileservers, some 20 printservers ant the rest are servers
running business applications. Which is not such a good idea, if you ask me.
Some of the apps our company runs, require at least 3 NT boxes to run
properly.
Almost all the NT boxes and all Solaris boxes are backupped daily (inc of
course). On the AIX we have many Oracle instances wich are archived at a
daily basis.

This all results in an 26GB database, holding 30+ milion files. Physical
occupancy is 5.4 TB, according to the occupancy table. This is handled by a
single TSM server running on an IBM H80 (RS/6000) with all its diskpools and
database volumes on a shark (ESS). We have a very high expiration rate,
about 60% of the entire site each day.
So, to go along with Kelly, our data moves around a lot. We reclaim our ass
off sort of speak. Thank God for the 3494 libraries.

Note.
In our country, like Eric van Loon the Netherlands, i have never seen TSM
advertisements or marketing. Not even in the business literature. Veritas
and Commvault with the Galaxy product is gaining market over here.
Tivoli should watch its back. Or it will loose to much market due to lack of
sales marketing.
For what it's worth.

Yeah, the university environment has the "mine" attitude at the desktop
level. That is just a fact of life. We need those people to educate our
future. But, if they would just spend 1 minute of discussion with the
students that corporate discipline and university creativity are separate
and unrelated, they would be 2 years ahead of the game before they send out
their resume. The first thing we look for in selecting candidates is
discipline. We do not need, not invented here types. We need creativity,
discipline, and control. We answer to stockholders and auditors.

If Microsoft and the UNIX software vendors built this discipline into the
design of their products we would not worry about the software being mixed
with the data.

I would bet that your desktop "my image" issue would go away if you could
use a common image on the restore that integrates their data as well as
their preferences so they have no idea a new image was used. If they say
they are installing their own stuff and it does not match then the
technology to prevent duplicate saves is of no use anyway.

I guarantee you if we tell Bill Gates we will buy it if he builds it, he
will build it and sell it to us. Same with the UNIX software vendors.
Might I suggest that a OS design forum for the vendors to discuss how to
take us down that path might be in their best interest just because we will
buy it.

I agree that long term storage is an interesting problem, but I don't
see reclamation (alone) as solving it. It may not be efficient, but it
isn't sufficient! ;-) For example, I believe I put my current drives
into production about 2 years ago. 3% (about 60) of my tapes are
"full" and haven't been mounted since 2000! Reclamation has caused
most data to move, but not all.

If one believes long term storage is important and moving data around
important to achieving success, then reclamation is not sufficient.

*SM doesn't automate mandated movement of data on it's storage, but it
enables it, since it is trivial to write SQL to find "old" tapes (so
one might run MOVE DATA on them). Moving data from "old" tapes allows
one to rebuild from another (hopefully still "good") copy, should a
failure occur.

Hi Kirsten

Have you had a look at your devcnfg file? Because the problem that is
described in your mail looks like it cannot define the 3590 drive. This is
probably because the devices in you machine (rmt0, rmt1 and so on) is not
the same as in the devcnfg file.

Do you have the possibility to send me the devcnfg.out file and volhist

Would be easier to help you if I'm able to see these files.

2002-02-15 Thread Gloeer, Kirsten

Hi Daniel,

the devconfig file is allright. It's possible to restore the
database with libtype=manual. There exists an APAR for this
problem. We'll open a design change request.

Thanks, Kirsten

Hi Kirsten

Have you had a look at your devcnfg file? Because the problem that is
described in your mail looks like it cannot define the 3590 drive. This is
probably because the devices in you machine (rmt0, rmt1 and so on) is not
the same as in the devcnfg file.

Do you have the possibility to send me the devcnfg.out file and volhist
file?

Would be easier to help you if I'm able to see these files.

Best Regads

Hi Daniel,

I restored the database by server-to-server communication.
The volumehistory and devconfig files exist. It is possible
to access the library without any changes with the restored database.

Hi Kirsten,

couldn't find message ANR8476E in the 4.2 Message Manual.
But it might be that RESTORE DB only supports manual libraries
like UNLOADDB?

We are running 4.2.1.9. For 3494 libraries it is
necessary to define a manual library.

2002-02-15 Thread Joe Cascanette

I am using this fibre card for both windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 ADV svr (connected
to a SAN). There are different drivers for Win2000 (but win2000 picks up the LP8000 -
you need to change this - use update driver and tell it to use Windows update). You
also require a different client to backup directly to tape (LAN FREE) (see SAN storage
agent guide), however if this path is not found it will use the LAN path to get to the
diskpools.

Not sure about the RS/6000, but if it is attached to the SAN with your library then
why not?!

Tape Flow Chart Needed

2002-02-15 Thread Mark Bertrand

Hi All,

I am pretty new to TSM administration and I am still confused about finding
out a tape status. We have had some tapes that have caused I/O errors in our
library and tape drives. I know that some of these tapes were checked out
but do not know how to ensure that they don't contain any needed data
without being able to check them in due to I/O errors. I also have others
that are required for a backup of the tapepool to copypool process (see
below), this is my primary concern to get this resolved.
02/14/2002 08:00:08 ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: BACKUP
STGPOOL tapepool copypool
02/14/2002 08:00:08 ANR1229W Volume 387ACRL1 cannot be backed up - volume is
offline or access mode is "unavailable" or "destroyed". 02/14/2002 08:00:08
ANR1229W Volume 418ACRL1 cannot be backed up - volume is offline or access
mode is "unavailable" or "destroyed".
Is there any flow chart or any written process that will take me through
steps for a tape or volume at an unknown state to either destroyed and
replace or reentry if still good but was errored due to a hardware problem,
that includes moving or restoring data that was on that tape. Something
like:

1) q vol 387arcl1 f=d, is tape unavailable or destroyed?, yes goto line 3,
no exit
2) goto exit
3) update volume 387acrl1 access=reado
4) issue command ? ? ?, did system use tape?, yes goto line 2, no it marked
it as unavailable goto line 5
5) do something else
6) do something else
7) checkin libvol lto1 387acrl1, did tape checkin?,yes goto line 8, no
8) move data, did data move? yes goto line 9, no, ???
9) checkin libvol lto1 search=yes status=scratch checkl=barcode, did tape
check in corectly?,yes goto line 2, no failed to read barcode goto line ???,
no failed to checkin for other reason ??? go to line 10.
10) destroy or replace tape

This was purely on example, please don't be too hard on me :) This is one of
the hardest hurdles on trying to get a grasp on TSM, any help would be
greatly appreciated.

I have called Tivoli support and have usually received good help on this,
but the process takes so long and usually something happens in between steps
that takes precedence which takes me from the support call and the process
gets lost then I am at an unknown tape state again.

My server is Win2K TSM V. 4.1.30.

Thanks in advanced,
Mark Bertrand

Re: Backup Sets for Long Term Storage

2002-02-15 Thread Salak Juraj

You are correct.

Another 2 cents:
long-term archive does not only consist of the sole problem to keep the
data safe for a long period of time.
Some other points are often overlooked, here only some of them:

- availabilty of system which the data can be restored on
(if you backed up your unix file 6 year ago with TSM and moved later
to NT,
you will not be able to retrieve your data unless you keep a working
unix machine alive,
even worse if you moved to veritas or Tivoli stopped TSM development
in the meantime..)

- availability of programs which can display / operate on data
or are you able today with the documentation you wrote 10 years ago
with an XY editor?
Evene with text files - moved from ebdic to ascii?
How about databases and so-called databases?

- availability of personal who knows the data and how to use it.
Even if this had been documented - will you find the documentation?

- tracking the archive
Even if you still have the data, would you be able the correct data
to be restored 10 years ago?

- access rights: will you know in ten years who has the acces to the
restore?
If protected by passord - will this be available?

etc. etc.

To summarize:
you have to think not only about archiving the data,
but about archiving of the whole working environment.

ANRD admdbbk.c(4144): Error 272 creating device class 3590CLASS.

The error above indicates that the libtype specified in the

Are you on a private network (ie 10.x.x.x) or on a public network?

If you are on a private network, you are probably going to have to create a
dns (and reverse) entry on your external dns server for this system. This
can be a mail routing sever that excepts mail for any system on the private
network.

If you are on a public network make sure that the dns administrator has the
appropriate reverse entry in the dns server for you server.

Re: Tape Flow Chart Needed

2002-02-15 Thread Ford, Phillip

This is not a flow chart but some things to do.

You can "query cont" to see if the tape has data on it. If it doesn't then
see if it is a DBbackup, look at volhistory.

If it does have data, then where is it? "Query libv libx volume" will show
if it is in a library. If yes, I then update vol xxx acc=reado and then do
a "move data" on it to clean it off. If this works, I decide to keep it or
scrap it. I usually scrap them after three problems.

If it is not in the library check "q drm" or "q volhistory" or "query media"
and try and decide what to do. If you can not find it anywhere and it has
data on it then you need to declare it destroyed and do a restore and hope
that all the copy tapes are good. You can use preview=yes to find which copy
tapes that you will need.

To try and catch this early I have scripts that do things. One reports all
tapes readonly and all tapes unavailable (both in library and out). Once a
week I audit a group of tapes in the library. I do the groups by the last
number in the label. Thus on this Wed I do all that end in 3 and next Wed I
do all that end in 4. In ten weeks I will have audited all my private data
tapes in the libraries and then start over again. These audits find bad
files as well as bad tapes. This way I am proactive and try and find them
before a client finds them during a restore and fails.

Hope this helps (this may not be the best but is how I am doing it),

Subject: Tape Flow Chart Needed

I was wondering if I can upgrade an AIX client that is currently at TSM
4.1.2 directly to 4.2.1.23 by pulling the install images off of one of the
FTP sites OR do I first have to get the CD-ROM that contains the base code

install the patch, 4.2.1.23? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: TSM support of STK library in SAN environment

Greetings,
I have looked through the listserv archives for an answer to this
question, but so far have not found an answer that quite addresses my
question.

I am about to install TSM 4.2.1 on an IBM pSeries box with FC attach
through Brocade switches to FC 9840 tape drives and a STK 9310
Powderhorn library. Soon the customer is going to want to do LAN-free
backups using TSM Managed System for SAN Agent directly across this SAN
to the 9840 tape drives.

My questions:

1) Can TSM talk directly to this STK Library? Do we need ACSLS? I have
used TSM with other STK libraries, and just controlled them directly.
This library will not be attached to any other server besides TSM, so is
ACSLS required? Does it make anything easier?

A: TSM cannot communicated directly to a STK 9310 library. This is because
a 9310 library necessitates an ACSLS control connection.

2) IF I can directly talk to the library, how is this done? TCP/IP,
through the SCSI interface, or what?

The library will communicate to the ACSLS server via a RS-232 or RS-432
serial connection. The TSM server will communicate with ACSLS via TCP/IP.

3) The LAN-free page at the TSM web site hints that to do LAN free
backups to a STK ACSLS library, I would need the EDT software. But is
this necessay IF I can control the STK library directly from TSM without
ACSLS?

This is tricky...according to TSM documentation, LAN-Free can be achieved,
in absence of EDT-DistribuTAPE, when you are using a SCSI attached STK
library. If this is not the case, TSM has you employ the EDT-DistribuTAPE
product to establish connectivity.

Please reply directly, as well as to the list.

Thanks much in advance,

John Schneider

Could you describe your layout abit:

ie:
- TSM Server connected to the SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN
- 3494 library connected directly to the SAN via Fibre (or connected via SCSI to TSM
Server)
- NT4 Server(s) connected to SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN

On the Win4 server can you see the SAN attached drives and access them?
Can the current (LAN path) client access the TSM server (manual backup from desktop)
and can the TSM GUI see all the SAN drives (mappings - should be the same when viewing
mappings through explorer)

I am using this fibre card for both windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 ADV svr
(connected to a SAN). There are different drivers for Win2000 (but win2000
picks up the LP8000 - you need to change this - use update driver and tell
it to use Windows update). You also require a different client to backup
directly to tape (LAN FREE) (see SAN storage agent guide), however if this
path is not found it will use the LAN path to get to the diskpools.

Not sure about the RS/6000, but if it is attached to the SAN with your
library then why not?!

send less data, the client sessions are shorter. Resulting in fewer
concurrent sessions, so server is less busy.

just the part of the file that changed. Version 3 (when the file changes
again) sends just the part of the file that changed. Same logical versions,
less data sent to the server.

Simple example:
Suppose you have a 200 MB file; only 10 MB changes each day.
Without subfile backup: 5 versions take up 1 GB on the server.
With subfile backup: version1 (base file) takes up 200 MB, next 4
incrementals take up 40 MB, total 240 MB on the server.

 Hope that helps!

Neither.
Look at the help for IMPORT NODE.

If the filespaces you are importing have identical names to the ones backed
up on the new server (and they probably will, since the clients haven't
changed), IMPORT will create new filespace names for the imported ones. TSM
will NOT merge filespace data on import.

We had a TSM region setup for testing and we are moving servers from one TSM

So far we've just pointed the servers to the new TSM. We'd like to export

overwrite data in the new environment, or would it simply store it?

Using IBM 3570

2002-02-15 Thread Coats, Jack

Has anyone tried hooking an IBM3570 to an NT box for TSM?

Re: Upgradeing 3494 drives

2002-02-15 Thread Bill Boyer

A suggestion I was given, but TSM support I think, was after changing
ANYTHING on a drive...microcode...upgrades...whatever...always do an UPD
DRIVE command against each one. TSM communicates with the drives and keeps
track of the capabilities reported. All this does is refresh TSM's
information. Now, if you delete the drive and add it back in you're OK.
You can see some of this information with the SHOW LIBRARY command.

We just went through this upgrade with 2 drives this past weekend and all
went pretty well. The only tapes that I had to set to "readonly" were those
in a "filling" status. I have run the library approx 10 hrs/day since then
and have not had any problems reading the old tapes. We have found a
handful of tapes with media related errors that could not be written to
once they had been reclaimed to scratch and we have been removing them from
the library.

We are upgradeing the drives in our 3494 library to:
-double the storage capacity of the J cartridges
-convert from SCSI to fibre

There seems to be a question of if we need to convert just one drive and
move the data to the newly defined lib / drive or can we simply convert
both drives, as long as the drives remain in the same library defined to
TSM.

Has anyone done this? The existing cartridges can be read by the upgraded
drives ( but noit written to ). I guess the question is will TSM use the
newly defined drives when a call for a cartridge with existing data is
made.

TDP Domino

2002-02-15 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

Hello all,
I have some Domino people trying to set up the TDP on their servers so we
can back them up. They seem to be having some trouble getting things to work

Does anyone running this have a "best practices" setup?

Do you have any options files I can take a look at?

They are trying to run things in a command file, do you have any sample
files for each of the types of backups you do? I'd like to compare to what
they put together. It seems to be the only thing they have so far and it
looks like it's only backing up archive logs.

Here is what they have:
set dom_dir="c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\domino"
cd /d %dom_dir%
echo Current date is:>>domarc.log

They are running TDP on Windows 2000. I have an AIX 4.3.3 TSM 4.2.1.8 server

Not SQL, just SQL Queries. It's a much smaller knowledge set. Also, I
agree with the recommendation for learning some kind of scripting language.
Perl, shell script, C. Or VB or Windows Scripting Host.

Hi Garry
CStringArray is a class in MFC (You shlould use ODBC
to connect TSM tables and a Programming language)

If you DO not use C++ or something like it. You have
to use some script editor (PERL...)
I use Norton Dos.
Little example of script.
SETLOCAL
PUSHD "C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM"
Echo>C:\Command.txt select file_name from contents
where volume_name='vol1'
DSMADMC -id=admin -password=admin -noconfirm <
c:\Command.txt > C:\Results.TXT
POPD
ENDLOCAL

This will just generate a file with the file_name
contents of the tape 'vol1'

This is a basis.
I hope you can continue.
Good luck

Michel

How can I implement Backup Sets?

2002-02-15 Thread Wholey, Joseph (TGA\\MLOL)

TSM v413.0 running on os/390
primarily backing up NT4.0 and ADSMv3.1.06

Situation:
We backup branch offices spread thru out the US. Each branch office has a primary
server and an exact duplicate server running the os and the apps (no user data).
Frequently, we will be notified
ahead of time (days) that the primary server needs to be rebuilt. This requires us to
restore the user data upon completion. At times it can be as much as 13G going across
fractional T1 or T3. Due
to the network, this can be a really time consuming restore.

Question:
Is there a way I can utilize the secondary server as a medium to create Backup Sets on?
There are no local devices (zip, jazz etc...) at these branch offices. Couldn't use
anyhow because there is no personnel at these branch offices to physically load the
media. Any suggestions as to
how I can use the secondary server to put backupsets on and greatly reduce my restore
time to the primary server?

Regards, Joe

UDB restore from a backup made on different AIX-client

2002-02-15 Thread Vijay Havaralu

Hello, all. We have a problem in restoring the udb restore to an
aix-tsm-client node.
The backup is previously taken on a different aix-client. Both with the
same version 4.1.2.0
tsm-server version is 4.2.1.9. (for example from aix102 db-backup to
aix401 db-restore).

We tried the options of setting dsm/dsmi dir/config variables, and 'set
access a/b * * *'.
We tried the method of changing adsm-node name (password) on adsm-server
temporarily.
On both the methods, db2adutil list commands, (and nomal client restore
across nodes),
worked fine.

But udb-restores always failed across nodes (but works on the same node).

Some of the db2adutl and restore outputs are as shown below.

I appreciate if any body has a detailed steps or method/s for a successful
restore.

When you define the library to TSM, add a "c" to the devclass
definition, that will enable compression on the tape drive. Run 'help

2002-02-15 Thread Alex Paschal

Um, for tape drives and stuff, I don't think the accounting log will help
much, unless you look at media wait times. What I would do is use the
dsmulog utility to write the dsmserv stdout to files, and implement a
cronned utility that keeps those files. I have my dsmulogs (roughly the
same stuff as the activity log) going back about a year, so trending tape
drive usage gets a lot easier if you write a script to go through and
collate mounts and dismounts. I also have a cronned process that does q pr,
q sess, q mo, and q stg and stores it in a circular alog.

I'd post some of my scripts, but I don't have the time to go through legal's
release process.

Re: How can I implement Backup Sets?

2002-02-15 Thread William F. Colwell

Joe, you can define a deviceclass with type=file, maxcap=512m.
Then you can generate the backupsets to the new deviceclass.
The backupset will be written to a one or more dynamically allocated
files on your sms managed disks. When the backup set is done you can
either FTP the files to the secondary server, our you can FTP them
locally to a machine with a cd burner, burn the cd's and mail them.

Since the restore will be done without accessing the server, the name
created doesn't have to be preserved, so you can rename the
files to bset.f1, bset.f2 etc. to make it easier for the people doing the restore.

Hope this helps,

(From the ADMIN GUIDE)

To help you find what information is available in the database, TSM provides three
system catalog tables:
SYSCAT.TABLES
Contains information about all tables that can be queried with the SELECT
command.
SYSCAT.COLUMNS
Describes the columns in each table.
SYSCAT.ENUMTYPES
Defines the valid values for each enumerated type and the order of the values
for each type.
For example, to get a list of all tables available for querying in the database, enter
the
following command:
select * from syscat.tables

Netware 5.1/ TSM client 4.1 restore problem - disk space

2002-02-15 Thread David Longo

We have TSM server 3.7.4.0 on AIX 4.3.3. Have some Netware clients
on Netware 5.1 SP3 and TSM client 4.1.0.0. Netware VOL1 is NSS volume
and set for Long File Names. Have been running fine for about a year in this
config. Have restored users files many times this last year.

Now have problem trying to do some restores. When tried to restore a users
many files in "...NT 4.0 workstation Profile.../ folders and subdirs, several things
happened. 134 files restored and 500 failed. We tried this sevreal times and
restored to another node to see what happened. You get Tivoli message
ANS 4024E "... write failed.." on certain files. also a TSA message about
can't write to file (didn't get message copied). We found that on the Netware
System Console a message pops up the first time we try on a node.

"Directory quotas enabled on volume "VOL1"."

Our Netware Admin says the only way he knows that can happen is to type
a command on the console to enable it.

We tried restoring to the SYS: volume on 2 nodes and then when we get to
certain files(the ones that failed on VOL1:) it says "Out of disk space..." and
gives you a prompt to Abort/Retry/Skip. However we are not out of disk
space. The files in general that fail are *.lnk, *.bmp and *.ini, but not sure
if that is a pattern or not. It will fail on same file each time.

In case it was some problem with that users files, tried another users
"NT Profile" directories and got similar results.
As I said we have restored many times in last year, but I don';t think
much restore done from "NT profile directory". Have done some
search on Tivoli Web site for this problem and didn't find.

Does anyone have an idea what our problem(s) are?

You are correct about the brand. They are Emulex. I have put the cards in

What is not correct here is the LP8000 is not the 6228. I actually think
that is the 6227. The 6228 has an LC connector on it and is 2Gbit. I think
it is the LP9000. You have to order the 6228 with the jumper to convert to
SC connectors if you need that.

This should mean that the Qlogic adapter can handle SCSI >> WWN translation.

Hi all!
I believe I heard about an issue with Qlogic adapters and SCSI address
assignments. For Qlogic adapters you cannot define fixed SCSI address
assignment (fixed relation between SCSI LUN's and FC World Wide Name). So if
another FC device is added to the host, your SCSI assignments are messed up.

Re: Sun Solaris and Qlogic QLA2202FS (Sbus) and 3590-EIA

2002-02-15 Thread Seay, Paul

I did not completely answer the first question. The dual ported cards do
not perform as well as the single ported cards either. We discussed this
with SUN when we decided to go with the PCI single ported SUN provided
Qlogic cards. Basically, the chip that is on the card can really only
support about 1.5 equivalents of FC throughput. The dual ported cards are
for failover to a different switch and connectivity and when you are short
on slots. In no way should they be considered a replacement for dual access
to a LUN versus two separate cards on different IO boards (in SUN). If the
card fails both paths are gone.

Again, this is a performance issue. Solaris just like other FC attached
machines will scream if you put the PCI stuff in.

What Eric says, depends. Yes, you can not do persistent binding of WWPN/LUN
to a controller/scsi device so that each LUN is presented to the system with
the same SCSI id. A SUN machine walks the bus. So, it really depends on
the device. If each LUN/drive is a different WWPN then you have the
problem. But, if it is like an IBM Shark where each LUN is presented with
the same SCSI id and a consistent WWPN, then you do not have the problem.
As I say, it depends. I only have experience with photons and IBM Shark and
am speaking from that point of view.

All,
Bringing up a Sun Solaris E6000 as a TSM Server and would like to use
Qlogic's QLA2202FS Sbus Fibre Channel cards to connect to 3590-E1A. IBM's
website only mentions support for QLA2200F (PCI). We can get Emulex LP8000S
cards but these are single port whereas the Qlogic cards are available in
dual port configurations. Has anyone out there been down this road?

Re: Backup NT Server via SAN with Emulex LP8000

EMULEX requires specific driver levels on NT, the latest ones. Otherwise,
it will not work.

Could you describe your layout abit:

ie:
- TSM Server connected to the SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN
- 3494 library connected directly to the SAN via Fibre (or connected via
SCSI to TSM Server)
- NT4 Server(s) connected to SAN via Fibre and TCP/IP connection to LAN

On the Win4 server can you see the SAN attached drives and access them? Can
the current (LAN path) client access the TSM server (manual backup from
desktop) and can the TSM GUI see all the SAN drives (mappings - should be
the same when viewing mappings through explorer)

We use this fibre card with WinNT 4 SL6. I tried to use NTutil but without
success. Any hints?

I am using this fibre card for both windows NT 4 and Windows 2000 ADV svr
(connected to a SAN). There are different drivers for Win2000 (but win2000
picks up the LP8000 - you need to change this - use update driver and tell
it to use Windows update). You also require a different client to backup
directly to tape (LAN FREE) (see SAN storage agent guide), however if this
path is not found it will use the LAN path to get to the diskpools.

Not sure about the RS/6000, but if it is attached to the SAN with your
library then why not?!

Hi,

We have problems to backup a NT Server via SAN with an Emulex LP8000
adapter to a 3494 library with 3590E1A tape drives. Has anyone tried
this? It is possible to access disks from the NT server via SAN and it
is possible to access the 3590E1A drives via an RS/6000.

Re: DEVCLASS:FORMAT ? ESTIMATED SIZE ?

2002-02-15 Thread Seay, Paul

The estimate is just that an estimate. What actually happens is it uses
that value to calculate the %full when the tape is in a filling status.
Once one is full, then the number changes to that value.

Hi everybody

TSM 3.7.4 (upgrading soon bA)
DRIVES SONY SDX-xxx
TAPES AIT1 or AIT2

Using DEVCLASS 8MMCLASS1

1) Which parameter do we have to use to make the
COMPRESSION made HARDWARE
2) Which "Format" to use, the default is "DRIVE" ...
BUT I think that it's remains not compressed. What
about AIT, AITC ?

3) Which ESTIMATED SIZE to use ?

Thank you !!

Re: Turning off a 3494 library

2002-02-15 Thread Seay, Paul

There is nothing special that you as a person have to do except make sure
your IBM people do it right.

1) You can open all the doors and just take the tapes out.
2) IBM will power down the library and deinstall/install it. Movers
move it.
3)Once IBM has reinstalled the library and aligned the track you are
set.
4)Open the doors and just put your tapes in them. They do not have to
go back where
 they were.
5)Run an offline inventory (IBM will know how to do this if you do not).
6)You are ready once the inventory completes.
7)Don't forget to connect the server backup to the library (TCP/IP,
RS-232).

Subject: Turning off a 3494 library

Hi TSMers

We are soon to be relocating to new premises and will need to move our 3494
tape library containing two 3590 tape drives. My questions are regarding the
safest way to do this.

Question 1 - What is the best way to remove the tapes for the physical move
of the library. Do they all need to be checked out and checked back in again
at the new site via TSM, or can the library just be paused and the tapes
physically removed and replaced when the library is in position at the new
site. Also, if the tapes can just be physically moved, does it matter in
what order they are put back into the holding racks within the library.

Question 2 - What is the procedure for powering off and on of the library.
Does the lib need to be put into a certain mode before the power is turned
off etc.

Thanks ever so much for any help

All the best

Does anyone have some good bare metal restore instructions for SGI?

Seems like you used to be able to boot off the install cd's and then ftp
over dsmc to recover. BUT now it seems that the dsmc module requires lib's
that aren't on the CD boot

Any ideas?
