Backup Failure with USER ABORT

2001-07-24 Thread ML FB6 - Tivoli Storage Manager

Hello *SMers,

a few days ago our daily incremental backup on one of our NT clients started
to abort. Only 1/5 of the data objects is backed up. The backup process
terminates somewhere in the middle with a user abort. This can only be seen
in the event log of the NT client. The event log entry is 4099
AdsmClientService, ANS1074I *** User Abort ***.
The actlog on the TSM server shows a corresponding ANR2579E schedule failed
with return code 4.

Enironment Info:
TSM Server 4.1.2.1 on NT4, SP5
TSM Client 4.1.2.12 on NT4, SP5

Any ideas ?

With kindest regards

Volker

problems with 3583 ultrium library

2001-07-24 Thread Henrik Ursin

Hi,

I'm having a the following problem with a 3883 library with three lto
drives:

1)A mount takes more then 300 seconds
2) a "q libv" tells me where my tapes are located, but tsm can't get to
four of the tapes. An "audit libr" tells me that
"ANR8358E Audit operation is required for library MAXIM.
07/24/01 11:28:41 ANR8834E Library volume **UNKNOWN** is still present in library
MAXIM drive LTO1
(/dev/rmt7), and must be removed manually."

This UNKNOWN vol is libv 259aan:

MAXIM 258AANPrivate Data4,109

I,m running tsm 4.1.3 on aix 4.3.3.(highest patch level) and my 3583
firmware level is V2_50_25.lif (lib) and 16E0.fmr (tapes)

It seems to me that I have an inconsistency between what tsm thinks is in
the robot and what the smc library thinks is in the robot.

TDP for Exchange v2.2

2001-07-24 Thread Bruce Kamp

Trying to upgrade from v1.1 to 2.2 in an Exchange 5.5 environment. Have a
couple of config questions:
1. In the options file in the include section it asks for SERVER_NAME\A
STORAGE GROUP. Is the SERVER_NAME the physical sever name or TSM node name
(mine happen to be different) & what is A STORAGE GROUP?
2. Two of my Exchange servers will be backup over our WAN. With version
1.1 I am having occasional problems with the back up eating up all my
available bandwidth. Are there any settings other than compression to help
with this problem?

Thanks,

SV: Backup Failure with USER ABORT

2001-07-24 Thread Thomas Anthon Kiel

Hi Volker,

look at this:
* IC29845 Client terminates the backup if it tries to back up a drive it
*
* can not access (such as the Microsoft Exchange Installable
*
* File System).

I found it in the readme1st file of the TSM client version 4.1.2.17. Maybe
this is the error that makes the client to terminate the backup.

Otherwise should the error you described be fixed in version 4.1.2.12 (look
at the IC no. of the readme1st):

* IC29368 ERRONEOUS 'USER ABORT' ANS1074I OR ANS5011I
*
* DURING BACKUP.

I would try to update the TSM client with version 4.1.2.19 or 4.2 (I use
many 4.1.2.19 and a 4.2 on my machine and they are working very well!) and
run the backup again.

Many greetings

Good steps. Support will indicate that you have a "TCP/IP issue" .

To find the issue: run a client ADSM trace, client TCP/IP trace, sniffer
on the client port, sniffer on the server port, server TCP/IP trace, and
server ADSM trace. Run these all of once.

TCP flush is an error sending data to from the client to the server. I
have
seen this problem 9 months ago on NT systems communicating with a UNIX
server. It went away before we could find root cause.

Could be some type of network problem. I would try checking the
following:

1. Update the network card drivers on the client.
2. Check the speed/duplex settings on both the client and switch
port and
ensure they are set to the same. I do not rely on
auto-negotiation.
3. Check the connection for CRC errors, buffer overruns or other
network
problems.

I have seen these errors when adapter teaming has been improperly
configured, specifically using Cisco Etherchannel.

Re: TDP for Exchange v2.2

2001-07-24 Thread Del Hoobler

Bruce,

1. "SERVER_NAME" refers to the physical server name.
In regards to "storage group"...from the README and User's Guide:
"Throughout TDP for Microsoft Exchange Server documentation
and messages, the term "storage group" is used. This is a
common term that means either a storage group on Microsoft
Exchange 2000 Server or the Information Store or Directory
if running with Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5."
So, in your case (Exch. 5.5) it refers to the "Directory"
or the "Information Store". So you could do this:

  INCLUDE "EXCSERVERA\Directory\...\*" CLASS1
  INCLUDE "EXCSERVERA\Information Store\...\*" CLASS3

Look at the User's Guide, (..\doc\tdpexc.chm or
..\doc\Ab5m1mst.pdf), it has 5.5 examples at the bottom of
chapter 2 "Installing and Configuring" under a section called
"TDP for Exchange Version 2 INCLUDE/EXCLUDE Processing."

2. There is nothing specifically within TDP for Exchange
that will allow you to throttle down a backup rate.
You might be able to play some games with some of the
number of buffers, buffer sizes, and some of the
"TCP" settings...but if you gained anything, you
might also see in increase in the CPU utilization.

Thanks,

Because EXCLUDE.FS takes precedence over all other Include/Exclude statements,
regardless of relative positions.
Rather than all those file system Excludes, I should think you'd want an options
file Domain which limits your backups to just the file systems that you do want.
Use Include/Exclude to fine-tune from there.

Well, that's a network administration and technology choice issue.
The ATM networking method provides for usage apportionment, and of
course there is SAN, to keep bulk data transfer off "interactive"
networks. Network utilization is something definitely outside the
bounds of TSM, as is the case with any application: they simply fill
network buffers as the space is made available to them.

Francisco - The GUI issue is one which has plagued customers for some time:
Tivoli desires to simplify on one common technology for the
graphical interface - but in doing so the result has become an unsatisfactory
compromise.

This is definitely one of those issues which customers like you should
add to the Oxford TSM Symposium requirements list. By all means,

What are you trying to restore?
If you use the GUI you should be able to go to File, Logon and put in the
server name of the server you want to restore FROM and it's ID and password,
just like you were logging on to it. When you open up your Restore window
you will see the server you want to restore from at the top. Open the
directory tree and select the files you want and then pick Following
Location for the Restore Destination Window and select where to put them.
Be careful about the choice you make for the restore directory structure.

It can be done from the command line too using the -fromnode option, but I'm
having problems with that myself right now.

Good luck , hope this helped.

For me - most annoying is, that you can't sort the output in the Webbrowser.
Because you can't give an "order by" to the Query Commands.
In the GUI, I was used to sort e.g. the Volume-List by Percent Reclaimable, to
see which Volumes will go through the Reclamation on weekend.
The only solution is, to use SELECT Stmts and use the "order by" Clause. (But
this is a way to go back to the keyboard! I have no problems with that, but is
it the right way ?)

Thema:GUI client for 4.1?

Recently I migrated an ADSM server to TSM 4.1
I can't find the Admin GUI at the tivoli web site or at the CDs
that came with the package (Solaris edition of server).

I find the web GUI to be lacking numerous details which were present on
the client GUI. For instance when viewing storage pools the GUI had some
info about the pools as it listed them. The web GUI I have to go into each
pool to see any info. I end up doing a "q stgpool" to see the info I need.

I have an old GUI client I still use, but I wonder why the GUI client was
eliminated or why the web client offers less info?

I have not upgraded the server beyond 4.1, partly because I don't know how
yet, but do newer versions have any improvements on the web management GUI?

Another example of difference. When listing File spaces the client had
info about utilization, last access, etc.. The Web GUI just lists them and
to see any kind of info one has to either select each file space or
manually do a query.

Any advice on the easiest way to manage the server Other than learning
more commands and doing more work at the command line?

Re: GUI client for 4.1?

2001-07-24 Thread Christo Heuër

Hi Francisco,

You can still use the old ADSM GUI on the newer TSM servers - I've got TSM3.7
and 4.1
servers on which I use the GUI and it still works fine(for how long still I'm
not sure)...
The newer features that are available on the web gui are unfortunately not in
the old
GUI so you have to probably use both. I use the cmd line as well.
I agree with Richard, update the Oxford TSM Symposium requirements list as
mentioned - maybe if we are lucky development might re-look the whole issue of
dropping the GUI.

Re: Licenses and 4.1

2001-07-24 Thread David McClelland

Hi,

TSM Licensing changed from 3.7 to 4.x and clients are now distinguished
into whether they are Managed LAN or Managed SAN clients. In AIX one
installs the tivoli.tsm.licenses filepack - this dumps a whole load of
'.lic' files into the TSM server directory - I prefer to move them myself
in to a 'licenses' subdir. Then a 'register license file=10mgsyslan.lic'
(or file=licenses/10mgsyslan.lic if you moved them into the licenses dir)
should license you for 10 normal LAN clients.

This is how things work for the UNIX server (well, AIX anyhow)...

On TSM 4.1 how do I add licenses for my clients?
I don't have any of the additional services such as HSM.
I purchased licenses for Netware, NT and Unix. How do I register those?
The manual only lists how to register additional services and options, but
nothing on how to register clients.

its not that clear actually as far as excluding individual files. for ex.

do you put

in the AIX 4.3 doc

Remember - you can't checkin a tape as scratch if TSM has records of data
on it. IE, if the volume is in a storage pool, has an database backup on
it, or other situation where TSM knows the tape is in use. You can,
however, check it in a Private, then check it back out and have the library
eject it. This makes sure that TSM knows where the tape is.

With a vault (and an outside company maintaining it, and maybe another
group handling tape management - I/O work, I recomend auditing your vault

Re: restore/retrieve in different server ** HELP **

2001-07-24 Thread Prather, Wanda

The simplest way I know of:

Go to the NT machine you want to restore to.

Start the GUI client with a parm:

dsm -virtualnodename=name-of-machine-restoring-from

You can do this by starting from a DOS window (cd into the baclient
subdirectory first).
Or you can change the Windows properties of the GUI to include the parm.

You will be prompted for the password of the machine you are restoring FROM
Then what you see when the GUI opens is the file tree showing the backups of
the machine you specified as VIRTUALNODENAME.

Because you are restoring to a machine other than the one that was backed
up, I believe you will have to select a DESTINATION for the things you
restore, even if you are just going back to the C: drive. f you just
specify "restore to orginal location", you will get a very obtuse error
message, because the UNC names of the receiving machine don't match the UNC
name of the machine that was backed up.

I can understand why they would want to simplify development and drop the
Admin Gui in favor of a web based solution. What I don't get is why they
dropped so much functionality out. I can't imagine that it would have
added all that much more complexity to include additional fields in the
display (i.e. on the query storage pool).

Been able to manage the server is at the heart of the product so I was
very surprised they would make such decisions as to drop functionality
from the Web admin which was present on the GUI Admin client.

Re: restore/retrieve in different server ** HELP **

2001-07-24 Thread Robin Sharpe

Tony,

There are two ways (that I know of) to restore/retrieve to a different
node. Let's call the node you backed up "SOURCE" and the node you want to
restore onto "TARGET"...

1. On node "TARGET", make a copy (not a shortcut) of the GUI icon. Open
the properties of the copy (right click, click on properties), then click
the "shortcut" tab. In the Target box, add: -node SOURCEat the
end of the line (be sure to leave a space after the closing ". You may
also want to rename the copy icon to something like "TSM SOURCE". When you
open this icon, you should see all of SOURCE's files, and you can
restore/retrieve them. You will have to specify the path to restore to...
if you don't TSM will use the UNC name and could possibly restore to
SOURCE! And, whatever you do, DO NOT DO A BACKUP OR ARCHIVE from this
icon!

2. (Second way) Start a GUI session on SOURCE, and click Utilities, then
User Access List... This is where you specify what other nodes can restore
SOURCE's files. It gets kind of involved, so check out the help and
manuals. You need to add node TARGET and whatever user will do the
restore. You can specify * for all users. Close this GUI, and start a GUI
on TARGET. Click on Utilies, then Access Another User. Here you will
"login" as the user you granted access to. Now you should be able to see
SOURCE's files.

Good Luck!

I read that section on the manual, but it did very little sense then.
It still makes little sense, but at least now I know that was all I

Some of my Win workstations have a couple of hundred files and a
few megabytes in *SM and others have a couple of hundred thousand
and many gigabytes. Further, some of my workstations have nothing
change in a week and others have tens of thousands of files and
gigabytes change in a day.

The good news is that DB size can be estimated, if you can make
good guesses as to what will be backed up and how long everything
must be saved.

I estimate that the DB will require 1 kilobyte per DB entry and that a
DB entry is a backed up (file or subdirectory) object (version). Yes, I
know it really takes less space, but this is an estimate and I want my
estimate to be a bit conservative.

Now, to really restate the obvious: the number of objects on a
workstation is probably not equal to the number of *SM DB objects!

A DB object is something that has been backed up. Forget that the
object contents rattle around the backup server, for this discussion.
It's only important to know that an object has been backed up to the
*SM server.

>From the backup server point of view, the number of objects in the DB
is affected by the various backup policies. Keep up to "n" copies of a
changing file ... then up to "n" DB objects will be required. Most files
will have 1 DB object, but some, such as "Joe's Daily Diary.doc" will
have "n" objects. Keep erased files for "m" days ... then up to "m"
objects may exist in your DB for those daily logs named "11July",
"12July", etc. and erased after a few days. If you are backing up
"cache" files, such as from a web browser, your old cache entries will
be saved for an additional "m" days. If your workstations have lots of
changing subdirectories, then it might be worth noting that
subdirectories are backed up using the longest retention in the policy.
That is, if you have a management class with a 10-year retention, then
all your workstations (with using the same policy) will have directories
retained for 10 years, even if a workstation uses only a management
class with a 30-day retention.

>From the backup client point of view, the number of DB objects will be
affected somewhat by how often backups are run,but mostly by the
file system and file include/exclude criteria. Certainly, a workstation
which has numerous OS and PP installs will use more DB entries than
one that is static.

Finally, if you have a workstation that you believe is typical, back it up
for a while. The number of objects backed up, and therefore DB
space requirement may be viewed with a QUERY OCCUPANCY
command.

Subject: Re: TSM tapes out of Sink with Library manager

Remember - you can't checkin a tape as scratch if TSM has records of data
on it. IE, if the volume is in a storage pool, has an database backup on
it, or other situation where TSM knows the tape is in use. You can,
however, check it in a Private, then check it back out and have the library
eject it. This makes sure that TSM knows where the tape is.

With a vault (and an outside company maintaining it, and maybe another
group handling tape management - I/O work, I recomend auditing your vault
every 2 months, or more frequently, if possible.

Re: Question on TSM 4.1.3.0 for MVS and OS390

2001-07-24 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

We just went to TSM 4.1.3.0 on OS/390 about a month ago.

We have clients ranging from 3.1.8.0 to 4.2.0 on boxes running LINUX,
SOLARIS, NOVELL, NT, 2000, AIX, IRIX, etc.

No issues so far other than one or two clients that were having problems
all along. Updating their clients seemed to fix their problems. Changing
the server did not make a different.

Subject:Question on TSM 4.1.3.0 for MVS and OS390

I currently have TSM 3.7.4.0 for MVS installed on OS390/2.10.
I am backing up several different platforms on the client server, Novell
4.11, Novell 5.10, a couple different Versions of NT, also the following
desktop clients, NT, Windows 95, 98 2000. I have several different
Versions of the ADSM/TSM client code installed on the servers and
workstations.
Does anyone know of any glitches or problems I should be aware of with the
TSM 4.1.3.0 for OS/390 code.

DB272 on linux backups

2001-07-24 Thread Gerald Wichmann

Anyone know if it s possible to do hot backups of DB2 7.2 on redhat 7.1
linux?

Reason I m asking is so far I ve only seen instructions for aix, solaris,
and NT2k (i.e. even the recent backing up db2 using tsm redbook doesn t
mention linux)

DB2 v7.2 Backups on linux

2001-07-24 Thread Gerald Wichmann

I should have added this to my previous question..

If indeed you can backup DB2 hot on the linux platform, how do you compile
the user exit as per the instructions on doing hot backups using TDP? I get
errors as follows:

[root@sfweb1 tivdb2]#
cc I/opt/Tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/sample L/usr/lib o db2uext2 db2uext2.c
db2uext2.c: In function `ArchiveFile :
db2uext2.c:824: `offset_t undeclared (first use in this function)
db2uext2.c:824: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
db2uext2.c:824: for each function It appears in.)
db2uext2.c:824: parse error before `logFileSize
db2uext2.c:953: parse error before `offsetll
db2uext2.c:957: `logFileSize undeclared (first use in this function)
db2uext2.c:985: `offsetll undeclared (first use in this function)
[root@sfweb1 tivdb2]#

I suppose I could try to debug the .c program sigh :-\

Any help/suggestions appreciated

Re: DB2 v7.2 Backups on linux

2001-07-24 Thread Dominique Pasquier

IMHO : there is a " -lApiDS " missing in the command line for cc
so the compiler cannot link to the functions related to the libApiDS.a ...
but I did not check if the error where from functions of this lib...

I did include the -lApiDS for what it's worth, I just forgot to type it down
below in my "output". You get the same error.

List of commands?

2001-07-24 Thread Francisco Reyes

Is there a document/URL with a list of all commands?
Ever time I use the web GUI I enable the command line and do some commands
I am familiar with. I was wondering where I could get a list so I can do
more comnands that way while still been able to use the web GUI for
whichever functions the web gui is better suited.

Re: Question on TSM 4.1.3.0 for MVS and OS390

2001-07-24 Thread Stumpf, Joachim

Hi David,

we have one Test-Server running with 4.1.3.0 on OS/390 2.10 and we have no problems.
I think we will upgrade our other servers soon.

But is it right, that unicode enabled filesystem are not realized in 4.1?
I read something in "TSM for Windows using the backup-archive client Version 4 Release
2"
on page 4 that the server needs to be at 4.2 level.
But the highest OS/390-Server-level is 4.1.3.0?!?!

Does anybody have experience how to store with enabled unicodefiles?

Joachim Stumpf
