Firefox goes the add-on way while Ubuntu goes the built-in way.
Firefox:
- you show Mozilla an add-on
- Mozilla can install it
- users can uninstall it
- if Mozilla decides the add-on is good, the add-ons appears in AMO
Ubuntu:
- you show Canonical a socially-demanding writing of a new feature

Ubuntu supports add-ons and also more options will be implemented in
Precise.
Just currently everybody is waiting for developers who write some
addons. Case Example:
http://www.webupd8.org/2011/11/install-ubuntu-unity-bottom-launcher.html

Unity does not have a sidebar.
I think Joy used the term "sidebar" for the launcher.

Yeah but it was written as an add-on in the first version
No, it was a fork too. The difference is that it was distributed as a
compiled .so file (which replaced the original libunityshell.so).
