Just as an addendum, I note that a feature request for peephole
optimisations for the scenario I have been talking about already exists:
#801 (https://sourceforge.net/p/sdcc/feature-requests/801/).
I see that the submitter also observes that notUsed('a') is "not handled
well at most conditions", which, apart from other issues discussed
within the ticket, hindered the proper application of the submitter's
rules too.
