Hello Maarten and Bodo, As always, you are very helpful and patient. After rearranging the definition and extern declarations, and intentionally making the mistake, I was able to get this error message: "error 91: extern definition for 'var1' mismatches with declaration." which is exactly what I was hoping to get. I'll put this into practice, and hopefully never get caught with that old problem again. Thank you very much! As far as 'make' goes, I can't say I know anything about how to use it. I've been using Code::Blocks in Windows, and it takes care of the commands needed for compiling and linking. Best regards, Rich.
