No, clean install in a separate directory with ./configure run for the first time and then make. After that I did rerun with different settings just to try what I am/was doing wrong. The 7715 ./configure was run multiple times with different setting before I run make. I just tried again, completely removed the sdcc directory. Unpacked the source tar. Run ./configure and after that make. It ended with the same error.
